Charitable Bingo remains popular pastime, fund raiser _-....exas bingo players won $431.8 million in 1998, according to the Charitable Bingo Operations Division of the Texas Lottery Commission which regulates the popular game. Over the same period of time, Charitable Bingo contributed $42.8 million to Texas charities. Charitable Bingo is a popular pastime and an important fund raising activity for groups of all kinds. As that relates to the SPJST, seven lodges play Charitable Bingo on a regular basis. In turn, these lodges contribute thousands of dollars annually to building better communities through donations to many community service and charitable projects. "It's a fun game and a good chance for people to get together," says A.J. Stayton, bingo operator at Lodge 88, Houston. "Everybody here volunteers their time to the effort. It's been that way for a lot of years and it's allowed us to give a lot of financial support to a lot of worthy organizations." A partial listing of groups that benefitted from SPJST Charitable Bingo in 1999 appears on page three. Winn Bradshaw, bingo operator at Lodge 74, Lovelady echoes Brother Stayton's words. "It's allowed us to make a positive difference in the community," he says. "At one time, our country-western dances were the big thing." After a while, the people kind of lost interest," he observes. (Continued on page 3.)
Lodge 177, Academy Vice President Otis Beck is one of the regular callers at the lodge's Tuesday and Friday night games. On those nights he isn't calling, Otis and his wife, Jackie, can often be found playing the popular game down the road at the Holland SPJST lodge hall.

Breaking New Ground
Last Saturday morning, an enthusiastic crowd of more than 200 turned out for the groundbreaking ceremony for the amphitheater at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange. Among the organizers, dignitaries and well-wishers represented were members of the Lodge 30, Taiton Youth Club, who performed traditional Czech dances for attendees. Nestled in a cove on a high hill overlooking the Colorado River, the amphitheater will be the first outdoor performance facility on the Lower Colorado River. It really is a nice location. It will be available for concerts, plays and other productions by community groups, touring shows or foreign exchange performances.

Genealogy Conference On a related note, I was happy to hear from Patrick Janis this past week. Patrick, as many of our readers know, has done a lot of work over the last few years tracing the roots of many Texas Czech families. Patrick, who is President of the Brazos Valley Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, called to inform us of the Fourth Annual Czech Genealogy Conference scheduled to take place July 27 - 29, 2000 at Brazos Center in College Station. Already, 26 presenters have been lined up for the conference entitled "150 Years of Czechs in Texas, 18502000." Registration for the three-days is $60 and reservations can be made by contacting Patrick at (979) 779-0317 or by visiting the related Internet web site: Czech@genealogy.org . Bingo. (Continued from page 1.)
"Since we made the decision to close the bar and get the bingo started, the crowds are back. It's been great." It's a similar story at Lodge 80, Holland. "It was matter of economics," says Glen Latham, who has been bingo operator since the lodge started playing 15 years ago. "The Saturday night dances got to be an expensive proposition. We just weren't making ends meet with them. "On the other hand, bingo has been a real money maker for the lodge and has enabled us to contribute back to the community." "We just had a four-month audit of our operation by the Texas Lottery Commission," says Brother Latham. "I'm happy to report that we came through with flying colors. "The Texas Lottery Commission has been our regulator for the last two years. They do a good job of updating us on compliance regulations and we do follow them to the letter." This past March, the Texas Lottery Commission initiated its Charitable Bingo Training Program. An active member of the organization responsible for the conduct of bingo games is required to attend. Others are also invited to attend the free workshops to the extent that space is available. According to the Texas Bingo Commission, one of the most frequently asked questions regarding the game is "How old do you have to be to play bingo?" That varies. While the Bingo Enabling Act states that an individual younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, the individual license holder has the

How It All Started Bingo's roots run deep. An early version of the game originated in the year 1530 in Italy and is still played there today. Unlike today's game cards, which use numbers from 1 to 75, the Italian cards run from 1 to 90 and the five letters used vary from card to card, with the names of fiveletter Italian cities being used. By the late 1700s, a variation of the game called "Le Lotto" was being played in France in a style similar to the bingo we know today. In Germany, they were also playing a somewhat more sophisticated form of the game used to teach children multiplication, spelling and history. By the early 1900s, a game called "Beano" had evolved stateside and was being played at country fairs across North America. A caller would pull numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans, yelling "Beano!" if they won. It was New York toy salesman, Edwin S. Lowe who coined the word "Bingo." While visiting a country fair, he latched on to the word when a tongue-tied woman tried to yell "Beano!" and instead called out what sounded like "Bingo!" Inspired, Lowe developed and marketed his new game as "Bingo." Working with a Columbia University math professor named Carl Leffler, the team took on the chore of generating number combinations for Bingo cards. By 1930, they had come up with 6,000 different combinations. It wasn't long after the came hit the

market that a Catholic priest from Pennsylvania approached Lowe with the idea to use "Bingo" as a way to raise money for the church. From a marketing perspective, it was a perfect fit. Introducing the game in parish halls greatly helped to popularize he game. Something else that is helping to popularize the game — at least at Lodge 183, Arlington — are the door prize drawings that the lodge holds on an at least monthly basis, says operator Johnny Adamek. "It's just a little thing we do to help promote the game and show our appreciation to the folks who come out to play," he says. "For instance, on April 30, the door prize will be a 19-inch color television. Everybody who comes and purchases a set of cards has a chance to win."
The Arlington lodge, as with every other SPJST lodge that plays bingo, also makes their facilities available for a range of community service programming and private rentals. "The game's been very good for our lodge," acknowledges Lodge 186, Caldwell operator and Lodge President Clint Luksa. "Besides giving to the community, it's allowed us to keep our hall in tip-top shape for the community." Kimball, McDaniel team of Lodge 35, Elk wins 2000 State Straight tourney The 2000 State Straight Domino Tournament was held on March 4 at SPJST Lodge 35, Elk. The young leadership of Elk with the strong support of seasoned volunteers conducted a fine tournament for the players involved. At the departure of the players, I heard many compliments on Elk's hospitality and fine cooking. Many thanks to the ladies of the kitchen who were very organized. These ladies provided a feast for us. The barbecue brisket was some of the best I've ever had. Compliment the cooker for me, will you, ladies? And the cakes, cupcakes and pies, oh my, home cooking is a treat for me!
father-daughter team of Jerry Turek and Kristy Self of Lodge 48, Beyersville, finished with the SefcikPaul team winning the third place award. And then . . . and then . . . special honors to the "good sports" team. These ladies received the "At Least I Was There" sew-on patches for their efforts. Although several teams admittedly were battling for the patches, ultimately, Sister Doris and Sister Frances did the best job of coming in last. Doris and Frances, wear those patches in honor. You earned them! Congratulations are in order for the SPJST 2000 State Straight Tournament winners:

Straight Dominoes (Continued from page 5.)
Three King; I thought that was pretty neat. I met Pat Kimball's mother who is encouraging Pat to get involved in the lodge—and he is. Pat's wife, Cynthia, made a cake that looked like a domino. I thought that was pretty creative. Who knows? Maybe it was Pat's good luck charm for the day. We made Pat take a picture with the cake; he got a little teasing out of that one. As usual, the tournament started out quietly, then blossomed into the full fledged roar of laughter and fun. I liked seeing men and women from different lodges introducing themselves, shaking hands and sitting down to enjoy a good game of competitive dominos. Thanks to the leaders, volunteers and members of Elk, Lodge 35. We wish them good luck with their year 2000 endeavors. Thanks to all who came out to play dominos and support your sister Lodge 35, Elk. We appreciate your continued support of the state tournaments. Lodge FACs: Remember that your lodge receives credit in the Lodge Incentive Program for sending teams to state tournaments. (Number 9, page 2 in the Good Values Never Change, 2000 SPJST Lodge Incentive Program Booklet.) The SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Temple Lions Park in
Temple, Texas. (No, we did not use invisible ink for the map on the back of the flyer. Directions will be posted in April in the Vestnik.) Husband, wives, dads and daughters, sons and fathers, sibling rivalry, kissin' cousins, generations, neighbors, longlost friends, big and little, short and tall, fluffy or svelte, handsome, pretty, swift and not-so-swift, blue eyes, brown eyes, any size—if you are a member over the age of 18, you are invited to participate in the state horseshoe tournament. It is fun and there is a nice playground for the kids. So come out and enjoy. If you are a member who has family or friends who would like to play in the tournament, but they are not members of the SPJST, then consider this a good incentive for you to bug them to join us. We have family fun and good times. SPJST is a great place to develop longlasting friendships, a great place to reinforce values like family .togetherness and civic responsibility as well as brushing up on you communication and social skills. Congratulations again to the 2000 Straight Domino teams of Pat Kimball and Raydell McDaniel, Louise Beran and Bennie Beran, Kenneth Paul and Clarence Sefcik and Sharon Clark and Johnnie Svoboda. The winners were awarded cash prizes and trophies. See you in May. Fraternally, Barbara Rosenkranz State Fraternal Activities Coordinator —SPJST-

Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Dear Members and Friends, We had our monthly meeting on Monday, April 10. We had 97 members in attendance. Our youth -went to Galveston and Moody Gardens this past weekend. They had a wonderful time. Marie Stayton, E.J. Bender, Johnny Broz and Marion Zalesky went along as chaperones. The Youth Club will also be having a dinner in Hempstead on September 9 for parents of the youth. We are having about 12 trees planted in our back yard at the lodge. Johnny Broz is heading up this committee and the trees will be a wonderful asset. The Mens' Club has two new members. They are Florian Demny and Nat Gonzales. Welcome aboard guys. The birthday sisters date to the lodge museum in Temple has been changed from May 3 to May 1. We will be eating at the Golden Corral. If some of you men want to go along, just let Ellen Miculka know. This should be a fine trip. Jim Rohde announced that the orchestra played at Houston's International Festival last weekend and will be playing in Frydek on April 29 and also at Rosenberg on May 7. Come on out and hear them. Jake Jacob is doing well - just can't get his strength back. Hilbert Pehacek, Benny Kocich and John Kosut are doing well after their eye surgeries and Royal Warnasch just can't seem to get over his eye surgery. Let's remember all these people in our prayers. It was decided that instead of having a dance for our awards party, we would have a games party and casino night. Bring your games or play the tables - it should really be fun with a chicken fried steak dinner with all the trimmings. For our Spring Fest on June 4, we will be having our spin wheel, which Helen Hegwood will see to; over and under; and other games on this day. This will be a free dinner for members, with cards showing paid dues. Also, pastries by our Birthday Club will be available. 88, Houston birthday sisters report on April meeting Lodge
Our meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. We had 24 members present. Secretary Ellen Miculka read the minutes of the March meeting. They were approved as read. Treasurer Mary Quider gave her report. Since Mary Kosut was not at the meeting because of her husband having more eye surgery, there was no Sunshine Chairman's report. Ellen Miculka gave a report on getting the bus to take the birthday club to Temple to visit the Czech museum We are planning to go on Monday, May 1. You may take your spouse or a friend along if there is room. They must be 55 years or older unless chaperoning a disabled person. Lunch will be furnished to birthday club members only. The bus will leave the lodge at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 6 p.m. We hope all of you ladies will attend. The Birthday Club received an invitation to attend the Circle of Czech Women of Dallas on April 9, but since we didn't receive the invitation until after the fact, no one from Houston was in attendance. The meeting in June will be held on the first Wednesday instead of the second since some of the ladies will be attending the convention in Temple. There will be an Easter egg hunt for adults, as well as children, on Saturday,
April 15, from 2 - 4 p.m. The hunt will be by age groups. Last year's party was so much fun, so try to be there. Remember, June 4 is Homecoming. They live in Austin, Texas. Congratulations to you and your family, Edna. The Lodge Awards Party will be held sometime in July—more about that later. We will have chicken fried steak with the trimmings. Try to come out and play your favorite games— poker, canasta, dominoes or whatever you like or play the casino tables. This sounds like great fun. • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of. SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of pre-
mium you want to pay and make the initial payment.
Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.
Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a
charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.
Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.
Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as
the cash value approache:, the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically. Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

-SPJSTA person's love for spouse and children and concern over their welfare are good reasons to keep one's life insurance contract in good standing. But sometimes, even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated. For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area.
