THE EDITOR'S DESK
Check and See . When was the last time you took a look at your SPJST insurance certificate? Even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated. For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. There are essentially two things that can cause an individual or a family to outgrow their coverage: (1.) A change in family status due to a marriage, birth or death; and (2.) Inflation. Sometimes, a marriage, death, birth or divorce may affect the original beneficiary and settlement arrange ments as outlined by the certificate. It makes sense to check and see if arrangements you made when the certificate was purchased are still okay, or will the insurance proceeds be going to the wrong people—or be paid out in a way that makes little sense. Historically, the SPJST has main-
tamed a close and personal relationship with its members. For more information on SPJST life insurance and annuities, please contact your local lodge sales representative or contact the Home Office at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they will put you in touch with someone in your area. What's Up? In that 2000 is a convention year, the Vestnik will once again be presenting a special issue in June dedicated in part to chronicling the history of our local lodges — especially as that relates to happenings since the last convention. Please submit your historical articles and photos to the Vestnik no later than May 24 to ensure that they get included in this update issue. If you have any questions, please call the Editor's office at the SPJST Home Office, toll free, at 1 (800) 727-7578, or call locally at 773-1575. Thank you for your attention.

Some old-time gospel favorites included in this hymnbook are Sladka Hodina Modlitebni—Sweet Hour of Prayer, Dobre Je S Dusi Mou—It Is Well With My Soul, and one that is still sung in Czech today, Pojd k Spasiteli!—Come to the Saviour! This hymnbook belonged to Evelyn Martinec, later belonging to her sister, Juanita Wychopen; Czech Bible—this Bible belonged to Anna W. Martinec and her daughter, Juanita Martinec (Wychopen), who studied this Bible while she was in the confirmation class at the Ocker Czech-Moravian rethren Church at Zabcikville, Texas; Doll from Czechoslovakia—this doll is dressed in traditional clothing called "kroj" which is a Czech costume; Klobouk—tan street hat worn in Czechoslovakia; Valasske Klobouk—a man's black hat from the region of Valasske in the Czech Republic, worn with black costumes at dances; Stastny novy rok (Happy New Year)—a greeting card from North Jicin Czechoslovakia; Wooden Yarn Holder—a gift given to Juanita Wychopen that came from Czechoslovakia; Pisnicky Z Krabicky—a Czech album of waltzes and polkas from different bands;

Karel Gott '79—another Czech album of a popular Czech musician of the 1970s. All of the above items were donated by Juanita Wychopen of Temple, Texas. In addition to these items, the following was donated to the LAM: Seltzer Bottle or "Spritzer"—this bottle came from Czechoslovakia. It was used instead of club soda to produce a "fizz" for cocktails. This item was given as a gift to Patrick H. Lee, Sr. in 1936 and later owned by his son, Patrick H. Lee, Jr. and was donated by Alice Lee, the wife of Patrick H. Lee, Jr. of Temple, Texas. In the month of February, 71 visitors toured the museum. This included a group of third g raders from Zion Lutheran School of Walburg, Texas. Also touring were visitors from Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma and the Czech Republic. Once again, I want to take this opportunity to invite all of our readers to come to Temple to tour the museum which, by the way, has often been referred to as "the jewel of Temple." And if you have already been here, come again and bring a friend or neighbor who may not even be familiar with the SPJST to give them a positive introduction to our society. At the same time, you will renew your own sense of appreciation for the contributions that a past and present generation have provided to serve the needs of others within the SPJST as well as our Society at large. Universal Life. Tailored to Meet Your Needs. Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer•ge Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step. 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.
Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.
Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate Therefore, as
the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically, Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

Charles has been a member of SPJST for 61 years having joined Lodge 47 in Seaton. He has been a member of Lodge 92 since the early 50s. Thank you for letting us know of your anniversary date. Expression of Sympathy Mike and Joe Paprskar passed away within a few days of each other. They are the sons of one of the founding families of Lodge 92. Both had been very active in Lodge 92. Mike was on the Building Committee when the present facility was built back in 1938. He also was on the committee that was in charge of the restoration of the hall following fire damage in the late 70s. He also served as trustee for a number of years. Joe was recently honored for 75 years of membership in the SPJST. He was named Fraternalist of the Year in 1998 and was a former president of Lodge 92. In regards to the Easter in the park of Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy and Falls County, Lodge 182 on April 16, we are sorry our youth leader and other officers were not able to be there from Lodge 182 due to the death of Rema Jameson, the grandmother of lodge officer Dee Ann Beckendorf. She is survived by husband, William; her granddaughters; Mr. and Mrs. Donald Beckendorf and four great-grandchildren, Jason, Dana, Jeanie and Daniel. Her only daughter, Avis, preceded her in death. Lydia is celebrating one of those birthdays which ends with a zero and first number is an eight, so hope you have a good one on April 30. Special thanks went out to Alice Barnes who is always helping in the kitchen and who does such a great job for the Food Bank. She thanked all the members for bringing 184 items this month for St. Thomas' Food Pantry plus $55 in donations. Alice reported that eight skylights were broken in the Parish Hall during the recent storm. While the Fort Worth downtown area suffered great loss during the tornado, none of the members suffered any loss which we were all so glad to hear. Annie Whitsell, Historian, was showing the latest photo album of the Club's activities. Everyone enjoyed all the picture. Georgia Davidson brought her book on Texas Veterans of Czech Ancestry which included a photo of Lydia as she was in the Navy during World War II. Everyone enjoyed the pictures and write-up of family members in the book. Door prizes were brought by Ima Lou LaPlant who brought two, Nettie
Naugle and Georgia Davidson with lucky winners being Louise Oujesky, Lillian Smith, Pauline Cox and Josephine Prochaska. Lydia and Linda Lewis brought Easter gifts which were given as special prizes during the games. News of Members Bessie Brezina is a great-grandmother again. Baby Lisa was born to Dean and Suzanne Stuart in Watauga, Texas, weighing nine pounds. Congratulations, Bessie. I believe she takes the prize on having the most great-grandchildren. Prayers go out to Lena Norman who had surgery recently at Baylor in Dallas. Our sincere wishes for a speedy recovery. It was also learned this week that Lucille Kret had surgery. Our prayers and thoughts go out to you and wishes for a complete recovery. Alice Barnes was seen on television recently. She was interviewed by Channel 11 on Election Day. Rosie Steinman was busy showing off a newspaper article from the Race Section of daughter, Donna Rose Parker and her condo at the Texas Motor Speedway. It was a nice article. Also Donna Rose's daughter, Jill is running in the Marathon in Prague. Donna Rose and Rosie's other daughter, Lori, will accompany Jill to Prague. Hopefully, they will get in some of the sights and visit with their Aunt Frances. Frank Prochaska was late getting to the meeting. Anna is most proud of Linda. Sympathy goes out to Rosemary Gribble on the loss of her nephew, Joe Lavender who died recently. Joe's father, age 97, is still living. Jeanie Mason, Rosie Steinman, Anna Johnson, Katherine Garrison, Mary Renfro, Frances Matthews, Lydia and Roy Alholm and I had the pleasure of attending the 65th anniversary celebration in Dallas of the Circle of Czech Women. It was a most delightful afternoon and the program was enjoyable. We enjoyed visiting with old friends and the food was wonderful, especially the open-face sandwiches. (I am still trying to learn how to say them in Czech.) It was nice to see Libbie Smith from Austin. She and I reminisced over being roommates at a hotel in Los Angeles while attending a Sokol Slet many years ago. I still recall Libbie waking me in the middle of the night to tell me there was no screen on the windows. Now, we were on the eleventh floor and I remember telling her not to fall out, close the window and go back to bed. It was also nice to see Evelyn Trojacek. Evelyn and I went to grade school together in Bardwell, but back then she was known as Evelyn Vitovsky. Upon leaving the party, Lydia, Roy, Frances and I stopped at the nursing home to visit my cousin, Arnold Vrla. We had such a nice visit and Arnold sends his regards to all his friends. He is doing fine, the food is good and they are taking good care of him. Of course, he and Roy had to exchange a few World War II stories. While there, Lydia and Roy also enjoyed seeing Justine Valek, a resident. Lydia 'and Roy
recalled the cruise they took with Justine and George some many years ago. April hostesses were Harold Balvin, Irene Green, Pat McWilliams and Annie Whitsell. Yes, Harold had everything organized and they did a beautiful job. Following grace, lunch was served and then we all enjoyed the little gift exchange followed by games. Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Children. Lone
For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. It is all appreciated and keeps us solvent. We are very fortunate to have such generous members. April 13 was my lucky day. I not only enjoyed the meeting and seeing many of my friends, but got to enjoy delicious food including a piece of strudl, won two games and left with a lovely hanging gasket of lacey fern. Thanks for the door prize, Lillie Hayek.

"Happy Birthday" was sung to Georgia Ann Kubala, our only April birthday member. Congratulations to the Dallas Circle of Czech Women on their 65th anniversary. Sorry I couldn't attend. So much volunteer work was done in addition to their cooking, baking and cleaning for Sokol, not to mention their families. This is quite a heritage to live up to. Correction (Editor's Note: Please note the following correction to the Czech lesson which appeared on page 13 of the April 5 issue. In the second column of Mr. Holub's lesson, the word "prat" with a hacek on the "r" is defined as 'fight." The "r" in this case is not supposed to have a hacek. That makes the word "to wish," instead of "to fight." For "to fight," the "r" must not have a hacek. Thanks to Brother Henry Peck for calling this item to my attention.) —SPJST-
