Farming and ranching remains a way of life to many SPJST members. The Bacak brothers — James, Frank and Allen — members of Lodge 40, El Campo Hillje, are no exception. In addition to maintaining their own farms, the brothers and two nephews, Alan and Douglas Trochta, manage the Bartosh family homestead south of LaGrange near Ammansville in Fayette County. As a crow flies, the SPJST started out just about eight miles from here at the Fayette County Courthouse in LaGrange." It was on December 28, 1896 that 25 Texas Czechs met in LaGrange for the purpose of organizing a new fraternal benefit society in Texas. Once organized, the state headquarters for the fledgling fraternal was set up just down the road in Fayetteville. every dollar spent on agricultural commodities, more than three dollars are pumped into other sectors of the economy — creating a $45 billion a year industry. One in five Texans works in some phase of agriculture. It's a way of life and helps to define the state's character. Even though farming and ranching are not referenced in the SPJST By-laws or mission statement, agriculture comprises an important part of the Society's heritage. In the early years, the SPJST logo reflected this close relationship to the land. The logo, which is pictured above, consisted of a cotton and corn stalk almost completely surrounding the star with the letters "SPJST" arranged between them. Most likely, cotton and corn were selected as they represented the two principal money crops in Texas at the turn of the last century. AROUND THE STATE
Way Back When Pictured above are members of the Ludwig and Mary Bartosh family in this photo, taken sometime before 1910 in front of the "old house" which was built in 1873. Pictured, from left, front, are: Ludwig, Christin (Miller), Maria, Mary (Balcar), Bessie (Bacak) and Emil.
Love of the Land (Continued from page 1.) ents Ludwig and Maria Kaluza Bartosh. Ludwig, who immigrated to Texas from Moravia, managed a saloon in LaGrange and was also an elementary school teacher. For years, the Bartosh family cultivated cotton, corn, and ran a pecan orchard and a few cattle, making a. nice living for their family on the 100-acre spread. Nowadays, James's cattle pretty much have the run of the rolling pasture and wooded property. The old Bartosh home, built by Ludwig in 1910, still stands and is being refurbished by James. The house has been unoccupied since 1955 when Mary Bartosh died. In spite of the elements, ravages of time and hay bales, the three-bedroom house remains structurally sound. The most noticeable and recent improvement has been the new tin roof James put on in February. "A little at a time," says James, "and we'll have real nice place for the family to enjoy again." "I remember as boy coming up from El Campo with the family to see grandma and grandpa. We would drive up in a '34 Chevrolet. It always seemed to be raining and we'd have to put on tire chains just to get here," recalls James. "Once we got here, it was great.
Grandma always had kolaches and fresh baked bread for us ... and somewhere during the visit she'd take each of us aside and give each of us kids fifty cents and tell us not to tell grandpa. And you know what? Grandpa would do the same thing!" Behind the house stands the old smokehouse. "That brings back some delicious memories, too — smoked sausage and bacon . . . ," he says.Frank Bacak, who is retired from the Coca-Cola Company, shares his brother's love of the land and the old family homestead. "It brings back a lot of good memories," he says. "That — and it's nice to have a place where I can get away," he says, smiling. "In my case, I've got three kids, three ex-wives, three girlfriends, three notes to the bank and I'm moving three times faster than I ever did. I love the peace and quiet!" It's the People
Whether viewed as a primary occupation or as an endearing memory, many SPJST members can relate to the joys and discomforts of agricultural life. Even those who are years removed from the land retain the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment that comes from having lived and worked on a farm or ranch. As author Darrell Sifford observes in his book, A Love of the Land, "Out in the country, selfmeasurement seems involved less with what a person does and how well he

It's that spirit that makes rural Texas — and the SPJST — what it is. It's not just the crops; it's not just the cattle; and it's not just the insurance — which are all wonderful, but it's the people who are more wonderful. In farming and ranching — as in a strong lodge — families and communities bound together not merely by necessity but by love and common goals. And there is perspective. Momentary setbacks are viewed as just that — momentary setbacks — and not crushing defeats. Despite the problems and challenges, there is always the hope that tomorrow will be better

Young members pursue missionary work, seek support
Lodge members lose home, lifetime possessions in fire
Greetings. This is reigning State Queen, Colette Kenney and former State Duke, Michael Kenney from SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas in District Three. God has pressed upon our hearts to go on a mission trip to Portugal with In Motion Ministries. This organization has been ministering around the world in 23 different countries for 17 years. They train and disciple people for ministry to send teams to foreign countries and across the United States. The Bible commands us to "Publish His glorious deeds among the nations, and tell everyone about the amazing things He does." (Psalms 96:3) We would like you to be a part of this life-changing experience as our lives and the lives of others are touched. To do this, we need your prayer and financial support. We have to raise $4,580 and we know that God will supply our needs with your help. Remember, your gift is tax deductible. We depart for Portugal on July 2. Donations will be accepted through June 1. Please make your checks payable to Potter's Wheel Ministries and mail to:
Dear Brothers and Sisters, I just received word that one of our District Five families, Wilbert and Claudia Janecek (141) and their two children Mark (196) and Regina, (196) experienced a great loss last week. Their home located in Sealy burned. As a result, the possessions of a lifetime were lost. Even though the family had fire insurance on their home, it will not be enough to secure a new residence and furnishings. The family could use financial help. Any assistance would be most appreciated. If you or your lodge would like to extend some support, please contact the family directly at P.O. Box 495, Sealy, Texas 77474 or call (409) 885-2890. Thank you for your attention and response. Fraternally submitted, Evelyn Mikeska —SPJST-

Unless you deal with life insurance regulady, it can sometimes be a difficult subject to discuss. It is for that reason that we need to routinely discuss and explain the many practical benefits of the life insurance products offered by the SPJST. If you haven't purchased insurance in a while, you may be surprised at the many affordable life insurance options available through your local lodge sales representative. For more information on SPJST life insurance, call your local lodge sales representative.

Music, good food,
dancing highlight yearly SPJST gala (Editor's Note: The following story by Carolan Whishall of the Temple Daily Telegram is reprinted with permission.) Flag Hall in the Cyclone community—already having seen countless family reunions, weddings and community dances—found another reason to welcome its community in shared friendship and common experiences. On Saturday, April 1 about 450 people gathered for the Texas Spring Gala, an event sponsored by SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone: The event featured a barbecue dinner catered by Cyclone Corral, music and dancing by Vrazels Polka Band, and door prizes and a silent auction. It's an event that celebrates Czech heritage, common among the rural residents of Cyclone, many of whom have ancestors from the former Czechoslovakia. Many of the atten-
dees, however, came from surrounding cities and even from as far away as Dallas and Houston. "The people are looking for a good time in between winter and summer," said Brian Vanicek, treasurer of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone and editor of SPJST's weekly newspaper. "We work hard, and we play hard." Guests of the event strolled around the hall, greeting friends, bidding on the silent auction items and sniffing the sweet and spicy smells of barbecue. Silent auction items reflected the homage paid to Czech heritage. Kolaches; rosettes, delicate, lacy cookies decorated with small icing flowers; pies; a Czech cookbook; a poppy seed roll; Cyclone Polka Pivo, "home brewed (it claimed) and spirited ale"; a CD of piano music from Prague; and even a leather SPJST-branded fly swatter were displayed to receive the bid of the person who wanted the item the most. The money raised from the silent auction, the door prizes and the entrance fee go towards the upkeep of the hall, Vanicek said. But the fund raising is an excuse for friends and family to come together for a good time—good food, good music and good friendship. Doris Milian, 73, sat at a table with her son, Darrell Milian, daughter inlaw, Sherry Milian and daughter, Melanie. Mrs. Milian represents the families whose fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers came to Central Texas from Czechoslovakia in the late 1800s. She has been coming to community events "all my life," she said. "I always went to dances out here," Mrs. Milian said. Though her parents were born in the United States, her grandparents both came from Czechoslovakia. "We just lived in a neighborhood of all Czechs," she said to explain the Czech culture's longevity and durability even when subjected to new and different cultures. "I didn't speak English until I started school in Oscar," she said. Though Czechoslovakian was spoken in her home as a child, her parents knew both Czechoslovakian and English. Mrs. Milian's father was born and lived on the land that his father, Tom Elles, settled. She, too, was born and raised on that land. "Czech families were everywhere; it was natural to speak Czechoslovakian," she noted.

While the idea was to show everyone a "winning time," some folks walked away with more than just a smile. Vallie Zavodny and her husband, Leon, of Lodge 47, Seaton, won the $1,000 CD door prize. Wednesday, May 3, 2000—VESTNIK/7 She married Edwin Milian, whose parents immigrated from Czechoslovakia. Married 51 years, Mrs. Milian is now a widow. "We had long, happy lives," she said. Vrazels Polka Band wasted little time after the meal to rev up the crowd to a rousing polka. Singing "Let's have a party tonight," the accordion, the sax, the guitars and the drums coaxed dancers onto the floor. The band promised "We'll play the music for your delight," and the crowd responded. One lone couple had the floor to themselves for the first dance, but whatever was keeping reluctant dancers off the floor had been overcome by the second number. By then the floor was almost crowded with couples stepping to the lively tunes of polka. "I've been dancing since I was five," Mrs. Milian said. "We had picnics, dances and food, always food," she said of community events /hat drew its friends and families together. "When we first began to date, we came to these dances," said daughter inlaw Sherry. She and Mrs. Milian's son, Darrell, live in Burleson but still attend community dances in the Cyclone community., "We never missed any dances," Mrs. Milian commented. "We learned the steps as children. In those days, everybody danced." The event raised money for the upkeep of Flag Hall. According to Vanicek, the hall was recently painted and several air conditioning units were replaced, all from funds raised at various SPJST events. The building serves as a community gathering place and is used all year round, Vanicek said. It's used for wedding receptions, family reunions, dances and community events. As the band struck up a spirited polka, Mrs. Milian's daughter asked her mother to take a turn around the dance floor. However, Mrs. Milian first made a promise not to engage in fancy turns. Taking to the floor, mother and daughter easily stepped to the polka tune. Mrs. Milian's years of dancing—since the age of 5—paid off. She may be 73, but her feet were as swift and sure as if she were five again. —SPJST-

Each one mentioned a new baby born to their Youth Leader Sandra Slovak. I don't know you, Sandra, but your youth members must care for you, big time. The pride they expressed through the few sentences each wrote, must have made all the efforts you make to be a good leader worth the while. We at Lodge 84 know that is true because we have a youth leader who is loved by so many past and present club members, that they refer to her as Mama Bessie! Fraternally, Rose Scott —SPJST--

10NESTNIK—Wednesday, May 3, 2000 Frank Klinkovsky and Otis Beck suggested that we review some of the items that were discussed at the District Two delegates meeting held recently at the SPJST Home Office. We discussed the name change, the proposed museum arrangement, and the recommendation of term limits on SPJST directors. We also ask members for their input of which we did receive several good comments on these recommendations. Thanks to Linda Johnson, Sales Representative, for reminding everyone that we need to try for the Gold Award this year in the Lodge Incentive Program. She talked briefly about the new Term 4Life product currently being marketed by SPJST and how competitive it is on rates. She said that we all need to help and we can by giving referrals for new insurance to our lodge sales representatives. Shirley McCrea told everyone how exciting it is to see the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum moving in a new direction. She said the formation of a 501(c)(3) arrangement for the museum could really assist the museum in obtaining grants and funds. Shirley also told us that she has been corresponding with a lady in the Czech Republic concerning the SPJST and our museum. She said we should be very proud to have it as a source for Czech heritage. Shirley is hoping that her friend may be able to come to the United States and visit. How exciting! Learn Czech With Us 13th lesson. Perspective and Imperative Verbs. According to the character of verbal action there exist two types of verbs in Czech, perfective and imperfective. They occur in pairs. 1) The imperfective verb emphasizes the course of the action (Something is going on.), or its repetition (Something happens often, more than once.). The verbs given so far in this course were all imperfective. 2) The perfective -verb presents verbal action as perfected, completed, emphasizing the outcome, consequence or product of the action. We look at the action quickly, as if summarizing it up. The imperfective verbs may be roughly compared with the English simple (I write) or continuous tense (I am writing), the perfective verb with the English perfect tense (I have done). The perfective and imperfective members of each verbal pair are formally differentiated. a) The perfective member of the pair is formed from the imperfective one by adding a prefix: uefm se:, Ue se!, Naue se!, pfgu:, Pi g !, Napig! ptam se:, Ptej se!, Zeptej se!, vaffm:, Vaf!, Uvaf! opakuju:, Opakuj!, Zopakuj!, piju:, Pij!, Vypij! zvonfm:, Zvoiri!, Zazvon!, Delej!, Udelej! b) The perfective member has a different stem: kupuju:, Kupuj!, Kup!, pomaham:, Pomahej!, Pomoz! davarn:, Davej!, Dej!, prodavam:, Prodavej!, Prodej! itekni!, ffkam:, hazim:, Flazej!Hod! c) In few cases the perfective and imperfective members are completely different verbs: beru: —Vezmi! Ber! Note: In the positive imperative we can use both the perfective and imperfective verbs while in the negative im-

Velehrad School marker pays tribute to former students, teachers, trustees and parents. Douglas Kubicek, Lavaca County Historical Commission chairman, devoted his time, doing the hours of necessary research to make the marker a reality. A tribute goes posthumously to Lillie (Kahanek) Kristinik for organizing the early school reunions that made a tremendous contribution. In addition, many people donated toward the marker in memory of loved ones. Recognition goes to the Lavaca County Historical Commission for its donation and Lavaca County Precinct Two Commissioner Edwin Gaertner and employees for erecting the marker. Initiating the project and following it through to completion was committee Chairman Alvin Jurena. The marker is a tribute dedicated to all the former students, teachers, trustees and parents who were associated with the school. "It marks the past for future generations, lest they not forget," according to the committee. The historical research committee included Jurena, Eugene Krupala and Albert Olsovsky. —SPJST-

person's love for spouse and children and concern over their welfare are good reasons to keep one's life insurance contract in good standing. It's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at I (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area.
