Go for the Gold "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." The Golden Rule: It's one of the most positive and constructive principles in the world. And there it sits --- just waiting for us to embrace it and put it to work. The time that we spend developing our love for humanity can be invaluable to the growth of the SPJST . . . Recall the life of Albert Schweitzer: In 1906, Schweitzer, a promising young medical student, decided to follow his conscience and devote his profession to serving the people of Africa. To put it bluntly, most of his friends and instructors thought he was crazy ... The rest is history . . . In addition to his humanitarian work in the jungles of Africa, Schweitzer is remembered as an insightful author in philosophy, ethics, music and theology. In 1953, at the age of 78, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Here's what Schweitzer had to say about life. "You must give some time to your fellow men. Even if it's a little thing, do something for others something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it." That sounds a lot like fraternalism, doesn't it? Albert Einstein, who was a close friend of Schweitzer, echoed these sentiments when he said, "The high destiny of the individual is to serve rather than to rule, or to impose himself in any other way." Great minds think alike! About the time Schweitzer was receiving his Nobel Prize, one of SPJST's own had this to say about our Society's mission in the world: "We should strive to serve our Brothers and Sisters, our Country and the World that shall live after we have passed away. Remember, the good we do for others and the world, remains and is immortal. We should make fraternalism a living force in our lives for brotherly love, a thing so devoutly desired by all free men, who believe in freedOm of thought and religion and the right of each individual. Let us become earnest co-workers in our Society in the service and for the cause of Benevolence, Humanity, and Brotherhood, and let our pride in America and the American way of life be great." These are the hopes and dreams of past Supreme Lodge President Edward L. Marek as they were recorded nearly fifty years ago in the Vestnik. It's been 23 years since Brother Marek died; however, the ideas he communicated live on and continue to inspire us.
The fraternal ideals inspired by and conveyed in the Golden Rule remain, a timeless truth. By making a determined effort to ingrain it as a part of our business, the SPJST and its members can't help but experience a renewed sense of meaning and optimism in all that we do. Life Insurance .
.. and More! Shakespeare wrote his plays and Mozart his symphonies to earn money to feed their families, but they also did it to be creative, to make use of their talents to leave something of themselves behind when their lives ended. Perhaps because they knew they would one day die, they were driven to leave something of themselves behind.
"The time that we spend developing our love for humanity can be invaluable to the growth of the SPJST."

SPJST Sponsors Barbecue Lunch for Peaceable Kingdom Thursday, May 18 at Home Office The SPJST Home Office, located at 520 North Main in Temple, will sponsor a Texas Barbecue Lunch benefiting Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children on Thursday, May 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lunch will feature barbecue brisket, beans, new potatoes, coleslaw, pickles and onions, homemade bread, bottled water and dessert. Plates will be available for take-out for $5 each. To guaranty your order, please phone (7731575) or fax (774-7447) the number of plates to reserve by 10 a.m. May 18. The mission of Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children, located in Youngsport between Salado and Killeen, is to furnish a place for chronically ill children to enjoy country living and the beauties of nature, free of charge and without regard to race, religion or ability to
pay. Activities at Peaceable Kingdom include fishing, river-rafting, swimming, horseback riding, hiking, play on a rope challenge course, a sport court and playground, a theatre, and learning about nature and how our ancestors lived. The target population consists of the chronically ill children in the area who would benefit most from time spent at the retreat—children who have seen too much of hospitals, too little of beauty, and who can't rough it. To serve them, the retreat is designed not to be like either a hospital or a camp, but rather like home for a big family living in the woods. The retreat is supported entirely by donation. It receives no government funds and depends entirely on such donations for its operating budget and for capital improvements. All proceeds from the barbecue lunch will go to Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children. —SPJST-

Lodge 24, Cyclone father-son duo team-up for state "42" domino win The 2000 SPJST State Domino Tournament was just a little bit unusual. The first state domino tournament of the 21st century was also the first state 42 tournament to be held outside of Central Texas in a little-big town called Ennis. SPJST Lodge 25, Ennis hosted the tournament on Saturday, March 18. Lodge President Linda Trojacek and a small team of lodge volunteers saw to the needs of the "42" players and prepared a very nice luncheon for us. Many thanks to these volunteers of SPJST Lodge 25 for spending their Saturday keeping us happy. Three teams consisting of Keith and Kenneth Andel of SPJST Lodge 24, Cyclone; Raymond Jurica, Sr. and Milton Martinek of Lodge 25, Ennis; and Kenneth Paul and Clarence Sefcik of Lodge 17, New Tabor won six games and lost two. The Andels' losses occurred in game one and then again game seven. The Jurica, Sr. and Martinek team losses in games five and eight and the Paul-Sefcik team losses in games four and six. The three top teams entered play-off games with awards in the following places:
First Place
Kenneth Andel and Keith Andel, Lodge 24, Cyclone Second Place Raymond Jurica, Sr. and Milton Martinek Lodge 25, Ennis Third Place Kenneth Paul and Clarence Sefcik, Lodge 17, New Tabor There were also two teams which vied for fourth place awards. These teams were Fourth Place (Tie) Billy Smetanka and Johnnie Chervenka Lodge 24, Cyclone Fourth Place (Tie) Raymond Jurica, Jr. and Raymond Matous Lodge 25, Ennis The first through fourth place teams were awarded cash and trophies. Congratulations to the winning teams and their lodges. Ah, yes, lest I forget. The happiest team to lose at the tournament. These go-getters, these can-doers, the optimistic obliterators who deny acquiescence to pessimistic nay-sayers who say, "we can never win no matter what." These folks subscribe to, "It's not if you win or lose, it's how you play the game." I don't think I've ever seen a team so happy about being at the

Lodge 6, Cottonwood members attend District Three meeting Hi! There were 20 people from Lodge No. 6, Cottonwood, that attended the District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 30, 2000. It was an enjoyable day at Lodge 66 in Elm Mott, Texas. They did a superb job. The fried chicken luncheon was all very delicious. The meeting was running a bit late, so my son's family and I did not get to stay for the horseshoe pitching and children's washer pitching. Wow, I want to congratulate my son, Damon Perez, from Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas, for becoming the First Vice President of District Three for the coming year. Actually, congratulations to all the officers of District Three for the coming year, some remaining in office and others new to the roster. makes building improvements Remodeling of Lone Star Hall is progressing nicely, thanks to Brother and Sister Ray and Lill Matus. I think everyone will be pleasantly surprised to see all of the new improvements. Thanks to all the members of Lodge 54 and Sokol West, this was accomplished through several fried chicken dinner fund raisers in the past and the many donations that were given. I encourage everyone to attend a function at the hall and check this out. Another very successful fund raiser was held in March for the family of Alfred Niemeyer. This was to help defray the medical costs and living expense as Alfred is going through some very serious illness and treatment. We wish to thank all the members of the West Brethren Church who planned and carried this out as well as members of Lodge 54. It is so gratifying to be able to work together with so many people and see the good results. Many thanks to all the businesses that donated items for the raffle and auction. With the merger of Lodge 36 and Lodge Lodge 54, we were entitled to another delegate to the upcoming convention. Ray Holasek was elected and Al Marchak was elected alternate.e The delegates representing Lodge 54 will be Maxine Sefcik, Terry Sefcik, Anne Emery, Ray Holasek and Al Marchak, alternate.

Larry Pflughaupt announced that there will be art classes in May and the next art classes are in July. Cost for these classes is $10. He also invited more people to come out to play tarok on Mondays, except on meeting nights, from 7 until 9 p.m. They would like to find a competition in which the tarok class can compete. Because of the convention conflict, the lodge meeting will be the first Monday in June instead of the second. There will be a delegates meeting on May 16. All delegates and alternates are urged to attend. To Coushatta again! We had a great time and I heard of several who won money. I'll not tell — maybe they will tell you. Our refreshments were furnished by Press Clooney, who brought doughnuts to enjoy before we left. Soft drinks were furnished by Mary and Hermann Doege. Sandwiches were furnished by Georgia and Gene Barcak with chips furnished by their daughter, Shirley Shoem. We played trivia and I guess I'm going to have to make the questions harder. They're too smart for me. We had a wonderful time, however. Many thanks to those who furnished refreshments. They were greatly appreciated. On a related note, Agnes and Ed Gerlich spent several days in Las Vegas last week. This was a gift from their daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Max O,Cannas, for their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They had an enjoyable time. Edna and Willie Wehring are the proud grandparents of twins! They were born to their daughter and her husband, Debbie and Stan Horton, on May 2. They named them Jason Stanley, who weighed in at five pounds, five ounces and Jessica Anne, who weighed in at four pounds, 12 ounces. They live in Spring, Texas and are at home now and doing great. Congratulations, Edna and Willie. Choral Group and Orchestra Perform On Sunday, May 7 — my birthday — my husband, Calvin, and I went to the Czech Fest in Rosenberg with Helen Hegwood. The food was great and the entertainment was better. The Lodge 88 Orchestra played and the Lodge 88 Choral Group sang. There were crafts of all kinds. The crowd wasn't as good as it could have been, but it was a great day. Crystal Holder, a Lodge 88 member and grandaughter of Mary Krippner, will be married to Aaron Webber of Alabama, on May 20, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Aaron has a degree from Auburn University in Industrial Design and Crystal attends Athens University in Alabama. Parents of the groom are Margaret and Joseph Webber of Hartselle, Alabama. Mrs. Heidi Holder is mother of the bride. Her brother, Shawn, will also attend, as well as Mary Krippner of Houston. God bless this young couple.
Our secretary, Ellen Miculka read the minutes of the April meeting. They were approved as read. She read thank you cards from Doris Knapick, thanking the birthday club for cards and phone calls; a note from Frances Dvorak and Inez Jeanes family for the contribution to the Scholarship Fund in their memory. We also received a program book from the Circle of Czech Women's 65th Anniversary in Dallas. Treasurer Mary Quider gave her report. One of the hostesses for April, Era Richards, donated the food and she and Josephine Buri and Mary Krippner donated their time in the kitchen. Many thanks to you ladies. Mary Kosut, Sunshine Chairman, was not present in today's meeting since her husband, John is still recuperating from eye surgery. SPJST Museum Tour The Birthday Club visited the Home Office in Temple to go through the museum. They had a wonderful time, with lunch at the Golden Corral. They had several men along on this trip and it was great. I didn,t get to go since I was ill. A motion was made and carried that the birthday club buy the meat for the next three months and the birthday sisters are to bring a covered dish to go along with the meat. Remember, the meeting in June will be on the first Wednesday instead of the second since some of the ladies will be attending the convention in Temple on the second Wednesday. Some of our ladies attended the Easter egg hunt held by the youth. The lodge was decorated with pastel colored balloons. We had a lunch of hot dogs, vegetables with dips and chips, cookies, cake and punch. It really was a lovely hunt — even the older ones looked for eggs. Yours truly found nine eggs and everyone got a prize. Don't forget, June 4 is Homecoming. Please bring your pastries to the lodge for this. Helen Hegwood asks that you bring your donations for the spin wheel to the lodge any time before June 4. The dinner will be free to all members holding a valid membership card. It will be barbecue with all the trimmings. The cost for dinner for non-members is $5 each (which isn't bad.)
The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Trefell. We had 29

They each baked two cakes. In June, July and August we will not have hostesses who will cook, but hostesses who will serve coffee, tea and cake. We will be bringing covered dishes these 3 months since the weather will probably be hot. The hostesses for June will be Margaret Spahr and Georgia Buchanan. Julia Kinnoman and Ellen Miculka will also bake cakes in June. A motion was made that we go to Galveston to the IMAX and have lunch. We were asked to think about this and it will be brought up at our

Beseda dancers perform in Garland Dear Members and Friends, Our members enjoyed a dinner out provided by the lodge at Ole Whiskers Catfish Buffet in Irving and was enjoyed by all. Rose Ann Parma filled us in on her extended trip to the Czech Republic and sounded like she had a great time with many interesting stories. Look forward to seeing the many pictures that were taken. Third Monday Meetings We extend an invitation to all our members to attend our meetings on
the third monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at our sister lodge — Lodge 84 — on Floyd Street in Dallas which is gracious in offering us a meeting place. We need more active participation in the lodge and have activities planned for all to enjoy such as dinners. Beseda dance rehersals, annual campouts, and even more. All we need is your participation, ideas, and fraternalism! I know we have the members out there. many with kids and grandkids and we need you all. I have seen our lodge go way down in active members, but we do have many. mar.' members out there. The lodge is you and without yo the lodge will be no more. That would be very sad. as our founders worked very hard to make the SPJST and our lodge what it is today. What better place to bring your families! Yes, times have changed — as they always have — and there is much more demand for our time. This is a good opportunity to spend more time together as a family unit. Enough said, now on with the fun stuff. Recent Performance Our Beseda dancers performed at Saint Michael's Catholic Church in Garland, Texas on May 6 for a volunteer and staff appreciation dinner.

Lodge Establishes Website The lodge has its own website and email address now. The website is www.geocities.com/lodge130 and email is lodge130@yahoo.com . We plan on taking the lodge to the future and preserve our rich Czech heritage and the SPJST. All we need is you. Fraternally, John Vrla Vice President —SPJST-

Take a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities Many people buy homes even though they have no intention of ever living in them. Instead, they lease the property and collect rent at regular intervals. They have made an investment of capital for the sole p urpose of producing a reaular income. were taken care of. Good Luck, Brandi The lodge is pleased to announce that we will be sponsoring a young member of ours, 11 year-old Brandi Holder, in the Miss Junior America contest to be held in August of this year. The lodge will take out a quarterpage ad that will be placed in the contest programs which will be handed out at the time of the contest. On behalf of LOdge 180, we wish Brandi good luck in the contest. In addition to sponsoring Brandi, the lodge will also donate $100 to Peaceable Kingdom for chronically ill children which is located at Lampasas River in Central Texas. We hope this donation will help a child have an enjoyable time at the camp. We would also like to say a small prayer for Mrs, Cobb. Mrs. Cobb is the mother of our treasurer, Carmon Babina. She will be under going open heart surgery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carmon and her mother, Mrs. Cobb. Soccer Team On a Roll On a lighter note, the Maypearl INXS soccer team had done it again and again! They are most definitely on a roll. They won their game on April 29 by a score of three to one and tied the game on May 6, one to one. Maypearl INXS, you have outdone yourselves. We at Lodge 180 are extremely proud of your and your coaches. The team is on their way to the tournament which will be held on May 13 in Waxahachie, Texas. Go, INXS!
We are now holding our breaths for the Maypearl Diamond Back baseball team. They will start their season May 6. Go, Diamond Backs! We know you can do it. What a lovely day to celebrate Mother's Day. Each of the ladies at the meeting were given a potted lantana. Each lantana sported different colors of red, yellow and orange. Thank you, Lodge 180, or remembering their special day. The door prizes were won by Carmon Babina, Ernest Deuser and Julia Deuser. Some people have all the luck. After the meeting, we had a
pot luck dinner. Hall Rentals

The following is a listing of those delegates who have been reported to the Home Office. The biggest majority of our lodges have completed their election of delegates and have submitted the necessary forms. There are, however, some lodges that have not submitted the paperwork needed to have their delegates seated at the Convention. The listing groups the delegates first by District then by lodge number. If a lodge has two or more delegates, their names are listed by our computer in alphabetical order and not necessarily in the order of their election. The mailing address listed is the address we have on file for them at the Home Office. If there is an error, please let us know. We are providing this list of delegates for the information of our general membership. The delegates you have elected at your local lodge will be your representative at the convention. SPJST Youth Program-Youth Achievement Day
A Mystery. Picture Riddle
(Fourth in a Series of Four) The SPJST offers its young people a program which encourages participation in various individual and group contests. Active youth club members who attend a majority of youth club meetings and participate in club activities throughout the year are eligible to participate in Youth Achievement Day (YAD). District YADs are held in the seven SPJST districts across the state. Participants compete in craft, talent, and royalty contests. First place winners in all contests advance to state competition which is set for August 5 and 6. Craft and individual talent participants compete in four age categories: ages 6 to 8; ages 9 to 11; ages 12 to 14; and ages 15 to high school senior. The participant's age is based on his/her age on June 1 prior to YAD. Participants may enter any four of eight craft categories: constructed items, foods, handicraft, hobby kits, needlework, pictorial arts, science/education, and sewing. Group talent participants compete in two age categories: junior group (ages 6 to 12) and teen group (ages 13 to high school
senior). Youth club members may also participate in beseda dance exhibition in junior and teen age groups. High school-aged youth club members compete for the titles of SPJST State King and State Queen. Contestants present a three-minute speech and they are judged on stage presence, speech content and speech delivery. Dukes and duchesses accompany the kings and queens. Duke and duchess ages are six to 10 years. YAD participants must pre-register by completing a separate entry card for each contest to be entered. These cards must be turned in to the district youth counselor (DYC) no later than 20 days before district YAD. Talent participants must also provide cassette tapes that contain only the song to be used for their competitions. Royalty participants must provide a copy of their speeches and an autobiographical form. Entry cards and autobiographical forms are available from the SPJST Youth Department. Youth clubs also compete in scrapbook and poster contests. -SPJST-
