Take a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of money that has either been paid in a lump sum (single pay annuities) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). In planning for retirement, a person may want to "send money ahead" by making regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income -- introduction to Life Underwriting, Dearborn R&R Newkirk, Dearborn Financial Publishing, Inc Current Rates Posted on Page One.

READERS WRITE

Reader recalls life and dedication of Calvin Chervenka

Students Association of Texas (CESAT) and the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas (CEFT) that worked to establish Czech chairs at both the University of Texas and Texas A&M University. Calvin has also performed as master of ceremonies at many Czech Festivals throughout the state as well as at the Czech Day at the State Fair for several years. His complete enjoyment in Czech culture was heightened when he met his wife, Mildred, while dancing a Paul Jones at the Ennis Polka Festival in May, 1970. They were married on August 16, 1970. In 1973, Calvin was a member of the first Czech class from Texas A&M to study in the Czech Republic. Promoting the Texas Czech Heritage, he organized and led a group that performed at the Detva Festival, in Slovakia in 1977. He helped to organize the Dallas Czech Club Choir which still performs at various occasions throughout the state. Calvin was instrumental in the choir's songbook publication. Members of the choir paid their tributes to Calvin through song at the viewing service in Dallas on Monday, May 22. Calvin is survived by his wife Mildred of Dallas; a stepson and wife, Leonard and Susan Gallia of Las Vegas, Nevada and Springdale, Utah; a stepdaughter and husband, Diane and Edward Oates, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a step granddaughter, Danica Oates, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; and a brother, John, of Rogers, Texas.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood Lodge Karel Jonas, No. 28, East members enjoy Bernard posts Friday night social meeting notice Hi! We had a social Friday, June 2, and there were 18 people present. Those of you that missed it sure missed a great meal that our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Irene Schiemenz, prepared. There was baked chicken, rice, gravy, corn and lots of garden extras. And there were all these delicious desserts that various ladies made and brought. Sure seemed like everyone had a great time, with teams of domino playing, TV watching, and a beautiful finished quilt top for the quilt in our upcoming picnic auction was on display. Thanks to Sister Irene Schiemenz for this display. There were even some ladies playing around in the kitchen. I noticed Sister Hattie Kaska sitting on the floor playing with containers from the cabinets. I think the other ladies were standing on their feet when I noticed Sister Georgie Soukup with a drying towel in her hand. Everyone seemed to be enjoying each others company with Sister Irene and Sister Barbara Hykel were involved also. Thanks a bunch, ladies! Next Social June 16 Our next social will be June 16 at 6:30 p.m Looking forward to seeing lots of you come out and join us. We are all like "one big family" getting together for a bit of fraternalism. Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter

from the Rowena area, three from Taylor, one from Schwertner, two from Fort Worth, two from Schulenburg and one from Seaton. The odd number of players was solved by having five players at two tables with one player sitting out shuffling and dealing the cards for the next hand. Ruth Wuensche was the first high round winner with 153. Dwayne Schaefer was the second round winner with a 157. Frank Schlesinger was the third round winner with a 156. Lunch was served after the third round. Brisket — the best I've had in a long time, 'taters, green beans, salad and trimmings were plentiful. Preparing the food and assisting in the kitchen were Nancy Schwertner, Sylvia Rollwitz, Elizabeth Walther, Eddie Mae Huebner and Laura Pospichal. Joe Havlak the patriarch of the Haviak family would rather play the accordion than eat and that is exactly what he did. Joe entertained us with selections from the new compact disk released by the Batla/Havlak musical group. The Joe Haviak brewery provided some fine custom brews. Taroks and pivo — hey, what more you want? After lunch, Gregg Havlak took the fourth round with a whopping 246. Ruth Wuensche came back again in the fifth round with a 144. Dwayne Schaefer took the final round with a 198 which earned him first place for the tournament. Dwayne's total score for the tournament was 831. Second place went to Frank Schlesinger with 789. Third place went to Gregg Haviak with a 752 and fourth place went to Joe Vyvjala with a 734. Thanks to Joe Halvak for organizing the tournament and to District Four Director Stanley Broz and Velma Giles for tabulating the player's scores. Our departure was hastened by a storm that exhibited the promise of much needed rain. The wind, lightening and raindrops were kicking up a lot of dust and blowing dirt. Yes, it was time to "get out of Dodge (Rowena)." We put the box of chips, cards and other papers in the back of the truck bed. The rain caught us near the town of Olfin. I ran around the truck to rescue the cards. The raindrops felt like bullets. It was after I had gathered all the cards that I noticed that it was hailing! That storm followed us all the way home. We would out run it only to get caught when we stopped. We spent an hour eating in a German restaurant in Kempner after which the storm enveloped us all the way to Schwertner. 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge

Dear Members and Friends, We went to Coushatta again. As always, we had a great time but I didn't win any money. Looks like I would learn, doesn't it? I still had fun. Our refreshments were furnished by Press Clooney who brought donuts for us to have before we left. Clara and Johnny Broz furnished the drinks and the sandwiches were furnished by Agnes and Tom Haney. Cookies were furnished by Dell Carlson and Esther Heinsohn. Everything was great. Many thanks to all of you. Evelyn Antrich had a wonderful Mother's Day. Her four daughters, Judy Phelps of Torrance, California; Genevieve Yokem of Spring, Texas; Vicky Gray of Azle, Texas and Carolyn Morse of Austin, Texas visited her for four days. Also her granddaughter, Lesley Vlietstrs of Pismo Beach, California and her great-granddaughter, baby Megan Vlietstrs of Pismo Beach, California were there. They had a great time, cooking, eating, playing Mexican train dominoes, taking pictures and visiting. They left their husbands at home so they really had a nice time. We had a great turnout for our Homecoming at the lodge on Sunday, June 3. The orchestra played and the choral group sang. There was a lot of barbecue with all the trimmings, cake, coffee or tea. Helen Hegwood had the spin wheel again this year. There was a dance afterwards with the Music Masters providing the music and it was enjoyed by all who attended. We had our monthly meeting on Monday, June 4, instead of June 11, since so many of us would be at the convention in Temple. We had 106 present. Our guests this evening were PJST Vice President Leonard Mikeska and his wife, Dorothy, State Field Representative Jim Wiest and District Five President Evelyn Mikeska.

Service Awards Mr. Mikeska presented FIC Quality Service Awards to Evelyn Mikeska, Edna Wehring and Helen Hegwood. This was the twelfth year Evelyn has received this award, the second for Edna and the first for Helen. These

were national awards and are something to be proud of. Susan Kelly Broz, daughter-in-law of Clara and Johnny Broz, was voted in as a new insurance representative for the lodge. We wish you the best, Susan. This was National Hug Week, therefore Marie Stayton, First Vice President, suggested that everyone turn around and hug their neighbor. That was really a nice gesture, Marie. She also read a poem "Simplicities of Life" which was good. On July 13 and 14, we will have the AARP defensive driving course again, as was stated by Larry Pflughaupt. The charge for this course is $10 each. Barbara Gonzales reported that the youth really did well yesterday at our Homecoming by selling homemade ice cream. I was sb busy I didn't get any but I heard that it was delicious. She also reported that the, youth will have 45 entries in the craft area for YAD this year; two group talent entries; eight individual talent entries and three royalty entries. Sounds like they have really been busy preparing for this day. Lodge 88 will host the June 25th meeting. Please try to come out and enjoy this. Marie Stayton reported that District Five Youth will be going to Corpus Christi, Texas on July 14th to visit the USS Lexington, will stay on the Lexington two nights and eat in the galley. They will bunk in the crews quarters and follow Navy discipline. They will also visit the Texas State Aquarium, go to Padre Island and have a scavenger hunt. Thanks to Jeanette Bender for her help in putting all this together. It sounds like lots of fun.

Lodge Donations The bingo committee donated $1,000 to the Paul Beck wing of the Salvation Army, $1,000 to the SPJST Lodge 88 Scholarship Fund, $500 to the Good Samaritans and $500 to the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Needville. Paul made a stupendous contribution earlier to the Salvation Army, with which they built the entire wing. One of our scholarship winners couldn,t make it to our meeting last month, but was at this meeting. She is Sara Dunlavy, granddaughter of Rudy and Celestine Darilek. Congratulations, Sara. District Five Director Louis Hanus presented the lodge with a collage which he made entitled "A Salute to Lodge 88 Presidents." This was done on Czech Day, 1976. The presidents were Tim Kostom, Ernest Hanka, Alfred Hilsher, Louis Hanus, Rudy Sefcik, Ed Kadlecek and Tillie Helmcamp. This was nice, Louis. Guest Evelyn Mikeska, president of Lodge 196, Cypress, Texas, announced that their lodge will be hosting the District Five Fall Meeting on September 17th. Please bring a covered dish and join them in this meeting. State Field Representative Jim Wiest complimented the winners of the National Service Awards. He said our lodge was doing well in selling insurance. Birthdays were celebrated by Susan Kelly Broz, Marjorie Nowak, Barbara Stevenson, Matthew Nowak, Mike Trefell, Marian Urbanovsky, Evelyn Zajicek, Krystle Bender, Vincent Hegwood, Emily Hegwood, Mary Fisher, Delany Fisher, Catherine

Bailey, Ray Krampota, Cody Cox, Georgia Lincke, Dorothy Pflughaupt, Lori Pflughaupt, Betty Theiss and Willie Mae Pehacek. Anniversaries were celebrated by Helen and King Hegwood, Kim and Vincent Hegwood, Agnes and Tom Haney, Edna and Willie Wehring, Carol and Donnie Havemann, Rosalie and Leo Lobpries and Dorothy and Henry Novak. The $5 door prizes were won by Gladys Havemann, Joline Cook, Georgia Lincke, Barbara Gonzales and Marciel Malik. We had 20 other prizes donated by SPJST Vice President Leonard Mikeska and donations from the spin wheel. On the sick list are John Kosut, who has been having eye problems, Jake Jacob, who is "hanging in there," Doris Knapik, Tillie Helmcamp, Kathy Trefell, Laura Bell Warnasch, who is at home after surgery and doing fine, but is going to start chemotherapy next week. Please remember all these sick ones in your prayers. After the meeting, we enjoyed a late snack (really it was a complete dinner) of barbecue, potato salad, beans and slaw. Our beverages were furnished by the anniversary celebrants. Never marry a person who is clever at fixing things. You'll never get anything new Fraternally, Flo Orsag; Second Vice President —SPJST-

Corpus Christi Circle of Women report on June meeting There were 29 members and eight guests at the Corpus Christi Circle of Women meeting Thursday, June 1, 2000. Guests included Dorothy Kline, Cassie McDonald, Fr. George Harris, Clement Kasparek, Dorothy Bernal, Savannah White, Alysha Arredondo and Teran Dziadek. Teran is the grandson of Pat Dziadek, one of our new members. Dorothy Kline, of Clevelend, Ohio was spending a week with her mother, Betty Jurica and Cassie McDonald from Houston was visiting her grandmother, Frances McDonald and great-grandmother, Betty Jurica. Fr. George, son of Helen Sacky, was spending his two weeks vacation helping out during her recuperation. We were glad to see them at our meeting. Noticeably absent were Milly and Jerry Elzner who were on a trip to visit relatives in Cleveland with grandson, Jerry in tow. Jerry called at noon to let us know we were in their thoughts as they were in ours and to send greetings. Marcellina Mokry planned to attend, but awoke with a bad back. She called to let us know this as did Frances Kosarek who had surgery and was recuperating. After our meeting, I called Lillian Covill and discovered she had fallen and injured, her leg and was unable to get around. Norma Baker had also fallen earlier in the week and severely injured her arm. It was still swollen, but she was able to attend the meeting. Enough already! No more falls or surgeries, ladies! That is now way to start the new millennium.

Thank you cards were received from the Dallas Circle of Women and also from Father George Harris and the Sacky family. Thinking of you cards were signed for Anita Regmund and Velma Malchar. Recommended changes to our bylaws made by committee members Kathy Marek, Becky Elzner and Anna Marie Moss were approved. In view of all the help Clement Kasparek has contributed to our group, it was only fitting that we voted him as honorary member. Congratulations, Clem; this is something that is not done lightly. We had a speaker from Hospice Care who spoke of the work they do and the need for volunteers and donations. She handed out registration forms to interested members. It is certainly a worthy cause and we will consider contributions. "Happy Birthday" was sung to twins Ella Simcik and Della Elzner and also Clement Kasparek. Thanks to Helen Pavelka for photographing the three birthday members. Although unable to attend, Evelyn Lovelace gave her mother, Lil Hruska, a large box of chocolates to bring for a door prize. Helen Sacky was the lucky winner. There were also some beautiful homegrown tomatoes that made my mouth water and many other prizes. Be they large or small, it's always fun to win a door prize. As usual, the food was delicious. We are lucky to have so may good cooks. And the fellowship and good will were uplifting as always. No wonder our members hate to miss a meeting. I always leave looking forward to next time. Fraternally, Anna Marie Moss

Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Kid Lone

As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid-up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. For more information on the SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate or other financial products, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

Lodge 92 Youth Club members attend LIT Camp Paxton Davies and Dustin Harrison of Lodge 92, Fort Worth attended Leaders-in-Training Camp in Salado, Texas along with 80 other campers from around the state this past weekend. The camp was beautifully nestled in the Texas Hill country surrounded with Cedar trees. It even had its own personal movie theater! The workshop was very informant and we learned a lot of things to make our district camps more successful. We did a lot of swimming and had a lot of training classes. Howard Leshikar gave us an etiquette class on how to greet people and shake hands. We learned how to do some fun dances to share with younger ones at our district camps. Hats off to all the DYCs and Melanie Zavodny for setting this exciting weekend up for us. We all had a great time!! Also don't forget about District Three YAD on June 25 at Lodge 92, Fort Worth and District Three summer camp at Val Verde July 7-10. Dustin Harrison —SPJST--

Lodge 107, Floresville Youth Club member attends LIT workshop Dear Readers, On June 2-4, I attended LIT (Leader In Training) Camp at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat for Children. The weekend gave me better understanding to my knowledge of being an LIT. The chaperones and our groups demonstrated how to handle situations at camp when we are in charge of the younger youth. Many speakers from the area visited our camp to teach us skills such as sign language, character building and painting. SPJST President Howard Leshiker spoke to the group on proper greetings. Other activities that were planed were swimming, basketball, air hockey, fishing, a luau and dancing. The best part of the weekend — even though all three days it rained — was meeting other teens from around the state. Being my last year to attend LIT camp I would like to thank everyone who helped plan this event. This is a great opportunity that can be used not only in SPJST but in everyday life. LIT Camp gave me a chance to show who I really am, without having to worry about what other think. This year was the most memorable out of the four years I have

attended because it was the year I allowed me to full open up and show the true me, plus meet many more people from around the state. Again I would like to thank all who helped make the weekend trip possible. I hope to see all my new friends at the upcoming Convention in Temple. Sincerely, Kara Morrisey —S MST—

The Flag and Flag Etiquette

Camp Time!

(First in a Series of Three Flag colors and designs hold special meaning Our Flag, "Old Glory," as it is often referred to and which parallels the origin of our country, stands for hard work and sacrifice of millions of Americans. Its seven red and six white stripes represent the 13 original colonies. Its white stars on the blue field represent the union of the states. The flag makers left no records to tell us why they chose red, white and blue for the colors of the Flag. In 1782, the colors of the Fla g were made part of the newly designed Great Seal of the United States, and the Department of State said the colors have these meanings: RED—hardiness and courage WHITE—the symbol of purity and innocence BLUE—vigilance, perseverance and justice

There is a legend that George Washington said:

The girls are on their way to Camp Tall Pine and the boys to Camp Long View, but the new drivers don't know the roads. Can you help them find their routes? (Hint: The routes overlap.)

"We take the stars and blue union from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing we have separated from her; and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty" Although Francis Hopkins claimed credit for designing our Flag, no one really knows who suggested the design. Betsy Ross of Philadelphia is reputed to have made the first Flag and suggested the fivepoint stars. Owning and displaying our Flag correctly at the right times are marks of patriotism and respect. —SPJST-

Last Man on the Moon Captain Cernan of Czech/Slovak heritage graciously accepted the invitation to appear in conjunction with the Ambassador's visit since he was unable to attend the 1999 Gala at the Warwick. His recently published book, "The Last Man on the Moon" has proven to be a great hit which he autographed until the last autograph seeker in the seemingly endless line. The evening began with welcoming remarks by Czech Cultural Center Houston Chairman Effie M. Rosene. She introduced Mr. Al Haines, Chief Administrative Officer for the City of Houston. In absence of Mayor Lee P. Brown, he presented a Proclamation from the City of Houston to His Excellency Ambassador Vondra.
