Two Big Projects Wow! Based on the initiatives passed by delegates to the TwentyEighth SPJST Convention, we've got a lot to look forward to. Two very big and visionary 501 (c) (3) (non-profit) projects are now in the works: The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) and the SPJST Education and Nature Center (ENC). With regard to the LAM, that topic had been covered at length in the Vestnik in the weeks leading up to the convention. On the other hand, the ENC recommendation received very little fanfare prior to the convention. The initiative was brought to the convention floor for discussion by John Engelke of Lodge 66, Waco. The idea parallels requests for a statewide family encampment raised at no fewer than eight previous SPJST conventions. The fact that delegates swiftly endorsed the two new projects, I believe, reflects the the faith and confidence our members have in the future of the SPJST and the rallying power of a worthwhile cause. It's exciting. In fact, I believe we'll be seeing even more member- and community-oriented initiatives like these in the months and years ahead. That's sure to help us when it comes to defining the "value-added" difference of SPJST to prospective new members.

Watch for details on these and other convention-related actions in the coming weeks here in the Vestnik - and very soon on our Internet web site spjst.com . And while we're on that subject, delegates to the Twenty-Eighth convention amended the duties of this office to include the management of the SPJST web site. Within the coming month, we will have the capacity - inhouse - to update our web site on a regular basis . . . In so many ways, the whole area of electronic communication and marketing is still in its infancy. If you have any ideas for developing the SPJST web site, let's hear from you. Watch for web site innovations and updates in the coming weeks. Playing Catch-Up ... If you're a regular reader of the Vestnik, you'll know that over the last few weeks, considerable print space has been allotted to matters relating to the Twenty-Eighth Convention. As a result, several lodge- and memberrelated features and photos were put on hold. We'll be getting to these items, along with your timely updates, in the coming weeks. Thanks for your attention and your continued input. Best regards, Brian Vanicek, FIC

Monday Fish Fry, Tuesday Banquet and Youth Spectacular Participating in an SPJST Convention is serious business; however, that doesn't mean you can't have any fun. Tuesday evening's banquet provided another opportunity for delegates to relax and enjoy themselves. Featured events included a presentation by Texas State Comptroller Carole Keeton Rylander and the Youth Spectacular. On hand to emcee the youth performance were 1996-2000 Mr. SPJST Jason Hermis of Lodge 142, Houston; 1996-2000 Miss SPJST Meribeth Novak of Lodge 84, Dallas; and the 1999-2000 SPJST Royalty Court: King Paxton Davies of Lodge 92, Fort Worth; Queen Colette Kenney of Lodge 84, Dallas; Duke William Fuller of Lodge 92, Fort Worth; and Duchess Kayla Kenney of Lodge 84, Dallas. 6MESTNIK—Wednesday, June 28, 2000 Straten, was called upon for his report. He did not have much to report, other than eight new adult members and one additional insurance certificate sold. Welcome to all! Sister Hattie Kaska, Sunshine Committee, gave her report for May of get-well cards sent to Carla Payne, Cyrill Svrcek and Kathy L. Kucera. No sympathy cards went out. About this time, Vice President, Brother George Sulak, asked that everyone please stand and have a moment of reverence towards Brother Al Soukup, Sister Georgie Soukup, Sister Hattie Kaska and Sister Mary Neckar upon the loss of their family member, Johnnie Soukup. Quilting Project Update Our Fraternal Activities Coordinator, Sister Irene Schiemenz, thanked everyone that had sent or given quilt squares to her for the making of quilts that will be auctioned and raffled off at our upcoming picnic on July 16. She mentioned that there would probably be enough squares for three quilts and she was proud of everyone's response to this fundraising project for our lodge. Sister Irene had also mentioned that she had sympathy cards to Brother Al and Sister Georgie Soukup and to Sisters Hattie Kaska and Mary Neckar. She also reminded everyone that kitchen workers for the picnic be at the Hall by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 16, and it was mentioned that our picnic would be "festive" this year with red-checkered tablecloths put on tables on the Saturday before the picnic. Sister Irene also mentioned that socials coming up were July 7 and 21. Also there is a social for June 16, which letters for the picnic will be worked on at this social for mailing. Our President, Brother Al Soukup, mentioned that a 55-cup coffee pot had been donated to Lodge 6, Cottonwood, by an anonymous donor. Thanks a bunch! He also mentioned that bingo prizes were needed for the Youth Club for their picnic benefit. Show and Tell Now, I want to tell you about a "Show and Tell" that Brother Al Soukup was going to "tell." Well, he said that he would let "IT" tell. And guess what? IT did! You are not going to believe this story, but it is true. His "show and tell" was a bass. Yes, a bass, mounted on a plaque and when you walked by it, it would "sing" to you. Yep, that thing threw its head towards you, flipping its tail, flopping its mouth open, and singing "Take Me to the River" and "Don't Worry-Be Happy!" Thanks for sharing, Al. Birthdays for the month were Brother George Sulak and Sister Georgie Skerik were drawn with Sister Georgie Skerik winning the $5 door prize. Progressive door prizes were drawn with Marie Jo Margulciux and Lillian Jo Perez not present. Various other door prizes were exchanged. It was also mentioned that we should go back to our old ways of getting "generic gifts" because it is too hard for keeping it all straightened out if a lady buys for a lady and a man buys for a man.

There were two "special gifts" for Dads at this meeting, with Brother Ray Perez winning one donated by Sister Irene Schiemenz and Brother Al Soukup winning one donated by the Perez's. Our meeting was then adjourned to enjoy a great meal prepared by George and Lucille Sulak and Joe and Dorothy Dvorsky. Thanks! Our next meal in July will be prepared by Georgie and Al Soukup and Mary Neckar and Hattie Kaska. You do not want to miss this meal, so come to our next meeting, Sunday, July 2, 2 p.m. Respectfully, Stella Perez, Reporter —SPJST-

49, Rowena hosts "Dust Bowl" Tarok Tournament

51, Ellinger reports on special June meeting

In a small village, far, far away where moisture is that which pops out on your forehead, green is that which you must have to play, dust is where fields of milo and cotton once grew, 85 degrees is cool, bare feet are in and Tarok rules are made up as you go (just joking), 18 players showed up; nine from the Rowena area, three from Taylor, one from Schwertner, two from Fort Worth, two from Schulenburg and one from Seaton. The odd number of players was solved by having five players at two tables with one player sitting out shuffling and dealing the cards for the next hand. Ruth Wuensche was the first high round winner with 153. Dwayne Schaefer was the second round winner with a 157. Frank Schlesinger was the third round winner with a 156. Lunch was served after the third round. Brisket — the best I've had in a long time, 'taters, green beans, salad and trimmings were plentiful. Preparing the food and assisting in the kitchen were Nancy Schwertner, Sylvia Rollwitz, Elizabeth Walther, Eddie Mae Huebner and Laura Pospichal. Joe Havlak the patriarch of the Havlak family would rather play the accordion than eat and that is exactly what he did. Joe entertained us with selections from the new compact disk released by the Batla/Havlak musical group. The Joe Havlak brewery provided some fine custom brews. Taroks and pivo — hey, what more you want? After lunch, Gregg Havlak took the fourth round with a whopping 246. Ruth Wuensche came back again in the fifth round with a 144. Dwayne Schaefer took the final round with a 198 which earned him first place for the tournament. Dwayne's total score for the tournament was 831. Second place went to Frank Schlesinger with 789. Third place went to Gregg Havlak with a 752 and fourth place went to Joe Vyvjala with a 734. Thanks to Joe Halvak for organizing the tournament and to District Four Director Stanley Broz and Velma Giles for tabulating the player's scores. Our departure was hastened by a storm that exhibited the promise of much needed rain. The wind, lightening and raindrops were kicking up a lot of dust and blowing dirt. Yes, it was time to "get out of Dodge (Rowena)." We put the box of chips, cards and other papers in the back of the truck bed. The rain caught us near the town of Olfin. I ran around the truck to rescue the cards. The raindrops felt like bullets. It was after I had gathered all the cards that I noticed that it was hailing! That storm followed us all the way home. We would out run it only to get caught when we stopped. We spent an hour eating in a German restaurant in Kempner after which the storm enveloped us all the way to Schwertner. Fraternally submitted, Franklin Schlesinger

87, Temple members enjoy Mother's Day feast Lodge

SPJST Lodge 87, Temple, met on May 9, 2000. After a big thank you to the men of the lodge for their Mother's Day feast, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence for our departed members, especially Julia Chlapek who passed on after a long illness during her 75th year of SPJST membership. The minutes and financial reports were read and approved. We recognized our visitor, Frank Klinkovsky, the Director of District Two. Treasurer Daryl Entrop then read the list of all new members and' terminations since November of 1999. There were 12 new members and 10 terminations. Six new members have joined since January 1 and will be counted toward our incentive award. Director Provides Update

Director Frank Klinkovsky then spoke to us about the proposals to be discussed at the Convention. He suggested that our delegates review our by-laws and prepare comments. He particularly mentioned the new rules about annuities discussed at the last Supreme Lodge Meeting. He also expressed some concern at the slow decrease in number of new insureds. Finally, he mentioned his own candidacy for District Two Director. Fraternal Activities Coordinator Thelma Groppell announced the birthdays of Bertha Capps and her granddaughter Sabrina Capps Stiles. Dear members and friends, Our dances for July are as follows: Saturday, July 1 Bobby Jones Polka and Variety Music $6 each Hostess - Era Richards Saturday, July 8 Manny Green Big Band Music - Dress Code $11 each Hosts - Shirley O,Brien and Harold Waits Saturday, July 15 Central Texas Sounds Polka and Variety Music $6 each Hosts - Anna Bell and Charlie Viet Saturday, July 22 Otis Claxton Big Band Music - Dress Code $11 each Hostess - Joline Cook Saturday, July 29 No Dance We went to the SPJST Convention in Temple this month. It was an "eye opener" for me and seemed to be enjoyed by all who attended. The officers remained the same except for the Vice President, which Gene McBride won by acclamation, following Leonard Mikeska's retirement. On Monday night, there was a fish fry and dance. We didn't go but heard it was great. We had a banquet on Tuesday night with entertainment provided by the SPJST youth. There was representation by each of the seven districts. They were all very good performers. King Hegwood gave us quite a scare. He was taken to the Scott & White emergency room by his son, Vincent, and it was determined that he has gall stones and kidney stones. He will go to his doctor here in Houston tomorrow. We also understand that one of the convention delegates fell and had to have brain surgery the next day. These things happen; still, we pray that these members will both be okay. Josephine Koeppen has had surgery and is still in the hospital. Delores Krampota has been in the hospital, has had a stent put in one of her heart arteries, but is doing fine. Let's remember them in our prayers.

Who Is It? She was born on April 7, 1905 in Fayetteville, Texas. She went to school in Fayetteville, Texas and attended St. John Catholic Church, Fayetteville, Texas. She attends All Saints Catholic Church in Houston. She was married on April 14, 1924 at St. John's and has two daughters. This lady has been at the lodge about 50 years. She is an honorary member of the Birthday Club. I'm sure that she has baked many cakes and pies for the lodge. She and her husband worked in the kitchen for many years. Their lives were centered around their children. They travelled a lot and had happy lives together. She is now 95 years old and doing fine. Who Is It? She is Clara Jecmenek. Her children are Kathleen Durtscki and Evelyn Walker. If you are headed in the wrong direction, God allows u-turns. Fraternally, Flo Orsag, Vice President —SPJST-

183, Arlington reports on recent lodge activities Lodge

Hello, everyone! I am so sorry I haven't written in so long, but I will try to make up for it in this letter. First, I must point out that our new insurance sales person, Tom Taylor is dong an outstanding job. He is selling insurance and getting us new members like crazy. We are so pleased with his performance! You will be hearing a great deal about Tom Taylor. Last I heard, he was third in sales in the state of Texas. We are so proud of you, Tom. A couple of things to note in the May meeting held on May 8, 2000 follow: I would like to note the passing of B.J. Hlavaty. He was a past president of Lodge 183 and in fact was the man who wrote my policy. He was kind man who worked hard for our lodge. Although belated, our sympathies go out to his family. He was buried in West and his funeral was attended by several of our members. We have not purchased a copy machine yet, but we are looking at new chairs and tables for our lodge. Family night was the 26th of May and I understand that the fajitas served were better that a restaurant. As a matter of fact I had one a couple of days later and it was terrific! Thank you, Arthur, for your work in the kitchen. You are welcome to cook for our lodge any time you wish! After our meetings, we have

been having great snacks, cold cuts, ice cream, etc. and on May 8, I, Shelby Sill actually won the door prize. So it does pay to come to the meetings! Another one of our past presidents, Inez Elenora Wasek Greenlees was married on May 6 to Louis Henry Grochoske. The wedding was small, but was a beautiful and grand event. It was held at the home of a former co worker in Grand Prairie. Inez wore a stunning cream full length peau de soire gown with matching jacket and elbow length gloves and shoes to match. Louis wore a dark suit with accessories to match his bride' s ensem ble. The food was delicious and abun dant as well. There were sandwiches, fruit, homemade cookies and wonder ful bride and groom's cakes prepared for the wedding by relatives from out of town. The wedding will be remem bered by wonderful photographs taken by a professional photographer and by close friends and family. Congratulations to the happy couple! I am sad to report that one of our dearest friends, Helen Sulak is ill. Helen is a wonderful and warm indi vidual. Our prayers are with Helen, Wesley and their family during this dif ficult time. Helen is the fast food cook for our game nights. She has worked two nights a week for about five years. She's a great person and great cook. We are thinking about her a great deal. Several of our members will be attending the convention this week. We want a full report of all the fun when they return!

June Meeting Report The meeting for June was held a week early due to the convention. It was held on June 5, 2000. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and a moment of silence was observed for our sick and ailing members and friends, notably, Helen Sulak and another friend of our lodge, Horace Ward. Horace is in the hospital in Fort Worth and our prayers are with him and his wife, Sylvíne. Roll call of officers was taken. Everyone was present. We discussed many things, one of which is the Fourth of July festivities. We will be having watermelon at the hall in the afternoon if you wish to attend. We are looking at tables and chairs to buy. We will be informed by our trustees about that matter during the next meeting. The kitchen and bar reports were read, but we did not have a treasurer's report because we had not yet received the bank statements. We will have two treasurer's reports next month. Cecil Phillips, one of our· trustees, looked into the cost of some land behind the lodge, but that was tabled until further notice. But thank you, Cecil, for checking. Daniel Roznovsky, our only dele gate, filled us in on some of the discus sions that were brought up at the dele gate' s meetings. Last I heard, we had five people attending the convention our president and second vice presi dent, Johnny Adamek, Dorothy Adamek and Daniel Rosnovsky and his wife, Mary Ann and our Sales Representative Tom Taylor. To all of the members that have been working so hard on game nights and rentals and helping out around the lodge and cooking on family nights,

thank you for your labor and time. Because· of you, we are really a suc cess. And again, thank you, Tom Taylor, for your hard work. Hope to see everyone at the dance in November which I will be reporting on in the future. · Finally, we are short on game night help. If you would like to work, please call our President Johnny Adamek at the lodge at (817) 465-8538. Until next time ... Shelby K. Sill -SPJST-

Wednesday, June 28, 2000---VESTNIK/11 on his hand. Hope all is better and not interfering with your play time. Lt. Mark Nieswiadomy spent three and one half weeks with grandmother, Rose Nieswiadomy recently. She certainly enjoyed the visit. Mark is in the naval marines and will be stationed in Corpus Christi. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Nieswiadomy. After 18 years as secretary-treasurer of the Pleasant Run Ex-Students and Teachers Association, Colleyville, Texas, Lydia Alholm declined the office at the 25th reunion on Saturday, June 10, 2000. In 1997, she was given a plaque in recognition for her dedication to the association. Frank and Merel Kovar were missed this month; hope you are just vacationing out of town and not ill. Also, anna Sustala's jokes were missed and we missed you, too, Anna. Rosie Steinman, Sharron Connelly and I participated in the Sokol District Slet in Dallas on June 4. We especially enjoyed seeing old friends from Corpus Christi, Houston, Ennis, West, Dallas and Yukon, Oklahoma. Yukon had a great group of girls singing and dancing Czech songs and dances. My thanks go out to Agnes Reznicek for the dumplings and jar of blackberry jelly. Down on the farm in Bardwell, my parents always had a row of blackberries in the field. It wasn't much fun picking the blackberries because of all the thorns, but we sure did enjoy the blackberry pies and jelly mother used to make. Our June hostesses were Janie Cepica, Martha Clifton, Gertrude Dawson and Tommy Dillard. As usual, they did a great job and we had such a wonderful lunch with lots of fried chicken and two very tasty chicken casseroles. Everything as good. Wednesday, June 28, 2000—VESTNIK/13 She was true to her Czech heritage and loved talking to her friends in her native language. If you walked into her pantry, you would find very few things bought. She made everything she could even her ketchup was homemade — not to mention that she loved to put up canned goods out of her one acre garden. The only assistance she wanted was for the boys to plow up her garden so she could plant and care for it. Grandma lived a hard, but happy life after their first year of farming in Snook they had earned enough money to purchase a phonograph which by the way still plays today. You never entered her home to find her in a bad mood; she always had a smile for everyone. Her grandchildren learned to appreciate hard work on the Vajdak farm. Grandma made sure you had a hand in everything even if it was as simple as milking her cow. You see, she had a milk cow up until the time she went into the hospital. She shared with those who were interested in learning the art of making good kolaches and how to crochet; she was crocheting at the age of 16 with any string she could find. Grandma loved to go the Snook Bakery on Saturday mornings to help make fresh kolaches and visit with her friends where you would only hear words of the Czech language spoken. Grandma will always be in our hearts for everyone who came in contact with her was blessed. She is preceded in death by her par-

The Third Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague has openings in its English language Master's Program in Medicine. The medical curriculum in English which is parallel to the curriculum in Czech, will admit approximately 50 applicants for the academic year 2000/2001. The six-year program admits students with a secondary education, as well as those with one or more years of university education. A one-year preparatory course is also offered. Since the 1996/97 academic year, the curriculum has undergone major reform, drawing on comparable experience from a number of West European countries and North America and implementing a curriculum based on the principles of integrated and problem-oriented instruction and early contact with patients. Students in the curriculum in English are expected to master the Czech language to such an extent that they are able to communicate with patients and hospital staff by the third year of full time study. The Czech language course is organized by the Faculty of Medicine. For more information about application and entrance examinations, contact one of the following: Assoc. Prof. RNDr. Eva Samcova, Ph.D. Phone: 420-2-67102407 e-mail: eva.samcova@lf3.cuni.cz and three adults present. The youth were reminded about Youth Achievement Day on June 25 at Taylor. Resources features photography exhibition

August 6 Countywide Fund Raiser sponsored by the Wharton County Chapter of the Czech Heritage Society—at the KC Hall. An all-day affair which will include a meal, plates to-go, performances, auction, a raffle and a dance.

Texas Folklife Resources (TFR) invites the public to see "The Welcoming Table," an exhibition of photographs by Ella Gant documenting food traditions in four Texas ethnic communities—Czech, Konkani, Mexican-American and Swedish. The exhibition will be on view June 1 through September 15, 2000 in the TFR gallery located at 1317 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas. There will be an opening reception June 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. Every day, in every corner of the state, ethnic communities in Texas are maintaining their identity through the simple act of eating. Often, when other expressions of culture have faded, a community's food practices may continue to encode and communicate traditions based in the history, values and beliefs of that same community. This exhibition documents the way four families in different ethnic communities sustain the soul's need for identity, community and homeland through the body's need for sustenance. Featured in the exhibition is the family reunion of the Czech-Texan Kallus family. At the entrance to the October reunion of the Texas-Czech Kallus fam ily is a table laden with ancestors photographs. Members have been gathering in the community of Weid(in Lavaca County) for this event for over 75 years. Individual families bring prepared foods for a lunch that sometimes includes as many as 20 meat dishes and 50 salads, vegetables and pickles. Czech favorites such as sausage, pork roast an sauerkraut are squeezed next to familiar Texas dishes like barbecued brisket and pinto beans. The four, table-long feast often ends with coffee and kolaches or studel. Just as food is the hub around which all activities happen during the day, the reunion is the hub around which an ever-growing four generations stay connected. And the day's activities are indicative of the values passed down to the family from their Czech ancestors—working together, praying together, eating, playing and visiting together.

A person's love for spouse and children and concern over their welfare are good reasons to keep one's life insurance contract in good standing. It's a good idea to

occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your changing needs. That's where an SPJST sales representative can help. When you're ready to review your present coverage, give your local lodge sales representative a call. If you're not sure about who to talk to, please contact the SPJST Insurance Department at 1 (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area.

independence Day

As we salute our flag

gleaming red, white and blue, we stop to think of its history and the ones who fought so true. As isre sing the Star-Spangled Banner

Why I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag As an American, I love and respect our flag for what it represents. The words, one nation under god should be understood by all Americans that we have asked to be under the protection and care of God. We all have individual ideas as to haw we should serve Him. Our country has been blessed with many good things such as medical advances, electronics and much more. The word liberty, to me means economic opportunity and security. The privilege to choose my own way of life. OUstice for all should always be interpreted, that no matter who you are or what you do. We, as Americans, are all equal and should be treated as such.

As a member of various organizations, the meetings always begin with the membership reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The American flag is always posted. It is a beautiful way to begin any meeting. As a survivor of the Normandy landings in France on

June 6, 1944 and also the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium and having been wounded twice in a critical way, the Pledge of Allegiance has a special meaning to me. Whenever I see the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, my thoughts are immediately directed to many of young men of Co. L, 23rd Infantry who gave their supreme sacrifice. Moments such as that always brings tears to my eyes. I will always be dedicated to the American flag and to the meaning that the Pledge of Allegiance represents, never forgetting that many lives have been sacrificed for our wonderful country.

whose writer was Francis Scott Key, do we know it was written about the Defense of Fort McHenry? Or the report in 1776 when Betsy Ross made it known, that she sewed the first American Flag with 13 stars and stripes shown. What about Captain Stephen Driver with his strong devotion said, he hid the famous "Old Glory" flag in the seams of the quilt on his bed. we state the famous pledge, do we even know who wrote this statement of independence it was Bellamy in 1892. We will never forget the day our flag first flew back in late 1775 our precious red, white and blues Crystal Bartek Lodge 47, Seaton

I have traveled in many other countries and I still find that our beautiful America is still the best in the world. I will never forget my buddies that sacrificed their lives so that you and 1 have a better place to live: Let us never forget to respect our flag. Dominic F. Netek Lodge 133, San Antonio
