Lodge 88, Houston fraternalist launches Salvation Army shelter and family learning center

Lodge 66 Waco teams win three of four top slots in SPJST state horseshoe tourney

Thanks to the generosity and compassion of SPJST member Paul Beck of Lodge 88, Houston, the Salvation Army recently dedicated the expansion of one facility and broke ground for another. Dedication of the $1.6 million, two-story Paul Beck Wing o the Harbor Light Center, located at 2407 North Main Street in Houston, and groundbreaking for the $1.3 million, three-story Marie Barbara Beck Family t:Zt Learning Center both took place April 30. Family Residence offers shelter and a compassionate environment to homeless single women and families, while Harbor Light provides comprehensive services for homeless and addicted men. Financing for both additions came mainly from Brother Beck, a US. Merchant Marine retiree who has called Houston home for more than 50 years. He contributed all of the $1.3 million for the Family Residence addition and $1.3 million of the funding for the Harbor Light wing. "I have never had the occasion to ask for help, and I hope it won't be necessary in the future," Beck says. "However, I always admired the work of the Salvation Army all over the world and

On Saturday, May 13, 2000, SPJST members gathered at Temple Lions Park in Temple, Texas for the annual SPJST State Horseshoe Tournament. The tournament began shortly after 9 a.m. Ten teams vied for first through fourth places and two teams did their best to win the "At Least I Was There" sew-on patch. The sew-on patch is the good sports award for the team that does its best to be last. Congrats to LeRoy and Wayne Hanusch (Lodge 47). We're proud you were there and so is Ruth! We certainly missed George Pauling's (Lodge 66) sidekick, Gladys Yates (Lodge 66) who was inhibited by a cast on her leg. She sent her son Jamie (Lodge 66) in her place and a fine fine job he did, too, Gladys! Jamie and George took fourth place. Another regular who we missed this year was Michael Galler (Lodge 66) who was out of town on business. He was replaced by brother, Thomas Galler (Lodge 66). Thomas and his dad, Weldon (Lodge 66) won First Place. The Galler team continues to be the challenge for all the other teams. Albert Kubala (Lodge 92) brought his friend, Vern Borde (Lodge 92) who is new to the State Horseshoe Tournament. We were glad to have him and his longtime friend and dancing partner, Jean Sparkman (Lodge 92) at the tournament. Albert and Vern took third place awards. Dana McAdams (Lodge 66) and Brandy Johnson (Lodge 66) buzzed up to the tournament just under the wire. Without a practice game to warm up, they "got whupped" their first game, but came back quick to conquer with a second place win. Brady Pasemann (Lodge 181) and Jerry Tallas (Lodge 29) played Praha Brothers music for our enjoyment on_ Jerry's CD player. Thanks, Jerry—and what a great CD! Joe Morris and E.J. Pechal (Lodge 47), Seaton, teamed up to play. I believe Joe, who just got off work, was functioning on very little sleep, or maybe it was E.J. who was functioning on very little sleep. Anyway, Joe managed to entertain Helen Kubala, (Lodge 92) and friend Jean Sparkman (Lodge 92) while keeping one eye open and the other on the horseshoe pits. Ronnie and Kristy Self (Lodge 48)

dar, the book tells the story of the immigrants as they arrived in c:ZECH VOICES the mid-nineteenth century and provide a picture of the culture that goes beyond the kolache pastries and polka dancing popularly associated with Czech Americans. Among the writers are important leaders, adventurers, journalists and typical farmers. Their impressions of the immigrants' hard daily lives, religious conflicts, the American Civil War, and their own identity bring to life an era that other sources rarely reveal. Journeys Into Czech-Moravian Texas (148 pages) was written and photographed by Sean Gallup. Sean came to Texas in the early 1990s to do graduate work at the University of Texas. For six months prior to his arrival in Texas, he had been teaching English in Czechoslovakia. Within days of his arrival in Texas, he was fascinated to discover the tremendous of number Czech communities and surnames. He was even more intrigued as he discovered that there were many native Texans who spoke Czech fluently. For two years, Gallup criss-crossed the state, exploring Texas-Czech communities, during which he spent six months in the Fayetteville area, the "cradle of Czech settlement in Texas" immersing himself in local culture and everyday life. There he documented language, religion, music, folk traditions and other aspects of the culture that have evolved from Czech-Moravian roots to become uniquely Texas Czech. With well-written, detailed text based on research and personal interviews combined with his sensitive, comprehensive photography, Gallup provides a fine portrait of today's Texans descended from Czech immigrants. Those of Czech ancestry as well as others interested in America's ethnic patchwork will find Gallup's journeys illuminating to their understanding of what is America. (Continued on page 3.)

"All three books make good reading and would be a welcome addition to your collection."

About the Books

We're Czechs (256 pages) was written by Robert Skrabanek, emeritus professor of sociology at Texas A&M University. Born into the Czech community of Snook in the early twentieth century, Brother Skrabanek describes with warmth and familiarity how the immigrants and their families made their heritage a part of their daily lives. In these pages, readers can sense the community spirit that came from attending worship services held in the Czech language, choosing friends and spouses from the Czech community, setting up cooperatives and fraternal organizations, working the land in traditional ways, baking kolaches and the dancing polka. Czech Voices: Stories from Texas in the Amerikan Narodni Kalendar (184 pages) was translated and edited by Clinton Machann and James W. Mendl. The ten narratives included in this volume recount a history of Texas as seen by early Czech Texans. Originally printed in the midwestern Czech-language journal Amerikan narodni kalen-

Horseshoe Tourney (Continued from page 1.) played opposite each other with team mates Jerry and Jimmy Turek (Lodge 48). Ronnie was wondering how he'd get around winning a game against his wife and father in-law just in case that happened. Jimmy, I found out is a state health official. Thank goodness I brought handi-wipes and instructed everyone to wipe their little pattycakes before eating lunch. And those two chatty guys, David Nauert (Lodge 24) and David Rosenkranz (Lodge 177) were beat out of last place despite their best efforts. These two men, who are supposed to be the strong silent types, sure kept their lips moving, at least they were moving every time I looked their way. Guess they have a lot in common - they don't talk much. Ha! I was gratified to have the help of District Two FAC Ruth Hanusch and District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky. They both are good folks. District Three Director Johnnie Krizan stopped by for a visit as he usually does. His district was well represented. The day was warm, the park was beautiful. We ate a good barbecue lunch and enjoyed each other's company. This is a really fun outside tournament. It is great to be in the fresh air and everyone just has a blast. We missed several regular teams this year. The Hubik-Wasco team from Lodge 87, Temple, the George and Renee Tomastik team from Lodge 177 Academy, Jerry Cabla and Johnnie Svoboda of Lodge 24, Cyclone, as well as John and Diane Engelke of Lodge 66, Waco. I understand John and Diane had lodge commitments to take care of. Weil, lodge business does come before tournament play. We sure did miss you all, even though it was great to see new and returning players. Here are the winning teams for the 2000 State Horseshoe Tournament: First Place

Weldon Galler and Thomas Galler, Lodge 66, Waco Second Place

Dana McAdams and Brandy Johnson, Lodge 66, Waco Third Place

Albert Kubala and Vern Borde, Lodge 92, Fort Worth Fourth Place

George Pauling and Jamie Yates, Lodge 66, Waco

The members who didn't come to the Mother's Day dinner in May and also the Father's Day dinner in June missed a good meal and social with members. The men did the preparing and serving of the dinner and it was great! Thanks for a good job! It was nice to see someone do the clean-up part. For Father's Day, the ladies who worked in the kitchen did a good job, too. The attendance in May was fairly good and for Father's Day in June, the attendance was small. We were disappointed more didn't come. The usual order in May and June was followed with the minutes, financial report, etc. In the May meeting, a moment of silence was observed in memory of Roman J. (Jake) Snapka. In the June meeting, there were reports from the convention by some of the delegates. Also in the June meeting, two new members were accepted: Mary Kathryn Snapka, Charles and Hunter P. Morgan. Welcome! Dear Members and Friends, Hope you had a wonderful and safe Fourth of July weekend. We didn't do anything special but we hope you did! Have you seen the exhibit "Kremlin Gold: 1000 Years of Russian Gems and Jewels?" My husband and I went on Monday. It is worth a trip to the museum to see it. Lillie Spies went to Coushatta with her daughter and son-in-law, Aggie and Joe Foster last week. They had a wonderful time and Lillie even won some money. The Fosters are going to Jamaica for a week. Sounds like fun to me. Lodge Hosts YAD We attended the District Five Youth Achievement Day competition which Lodge 88, Houston hosted on Sunday, June 25. We enjoyed a delicious lunch of hamburgers, chips and iced tea. The program consisted of talent from Lodge 88 and Lodge 196. Our guest, State Field Representative Jim Wiest and Lodge 88 Fraternal Activities Coordinator Larry Pflughaupt gave awards to each of the District Five winners for the most points received. There were so many winners of trophies for different categories, it's difficult to mention each one here, but we congratulate each and every one of you. The Youth Achievement awards went to Valerie Mattiza, who was last year's queen, Kristen Bender and Amanda Godwin. This year's King and Queen of District Five are King Daryl Havemann and Queen Natalie Zalesky. Duke is Matthew Boyce and Duchess is Miranda Hale. Good luck. in the state competition. Appreciation plaques were presented to Johnny Broz and Willie Wehring. Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales and her assistants, Miriam Zalesky and Shari Boyce, worked very hard to put all this together, as well as Marie Stayton, District Youth Counselor. We went to Coushatta to gamble — again! We had a great time — some won but some didn't. Dona Clooney furnished the doughnuts at the lodge before we got on the bus. Our sandwiches were furnished by Elsie Roznovsky and Mary Roznovsky. Our soft drinks were furnished by Esther Heinsohn and Dell Carlson. Homemade cookies were furnished by Georgia Lincke. Take a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of money that has either been paid in a r' lump sum (single pay annuities) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). In planning for retirement, a person may want to "send money ahead" by making regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income . — Introduction to Life Underwriting, Dearborn • R&R Newkirk, Dearborn Financial Publishing, Inc. Wednesday, July 12, 2000--VESTNIK/9

I have just been reading a book about the early days of Comanche County in 1856 and the taxes that the people had to pay on their property. One person had 500 hundred acres of land valued at $500. He paid no poll tax. His taxes were 75 cents. A second man rendered five negro slaves

valued at $1,500; seven horses valued at $525; and other property, valued at $100 with a total valuation of $2,125. His taxes were $3.69, including a 50 cent poll tax. A third man rendered one negro servant, valued at $800; eight horses, valued at $625; and other property valued at $140. The total valuation was $1,615. Total taxes were $2.93, including a 50 cent poll tax. Another man rendered one horse valued at $20; other property valued at $50, making a total of $70. His taxes were 60 cents including 50 cents poll tax. Maybe this is what the old timers talk about as the good old days. But it is sad to think that the worth of man's life was comparable to that of eight horses. The nearest railroad was Fort Worth and Waco. There were no highways— not even a graded or gravel road in the county. Horseback was the fastest way to travel. Women always rode sidesaddle. The farms were fenced with split rails or rocks piled up in a row. Farmers had what was called a bull tongue plow. It was five or six inches wide and six or seven inches long and bolted to a homemade wooden stick. They hitched one horse to it. One man would lay off a row at a time while

Coordinator was present with some good advice for helping to get things rolling. The first order of business was that the members donated a U.S. Flag to the Hico Center Association. The members are interested in helping other organizations in the area and being a good neighbor. We would like to all help them if they will help us get started in the neighborhood. The next meeting will be in July on the third Monday, which will be the 17th at 7 p.m-. at the Hico Senior Citizens Center 411 Mesquite. All SPJST members and guests are welcome to attend our meetings. We would like to invite all SPJST members that are members of other lodges that live in driving range of Hico to come to our meetings and see what a new lodge has to offer in a new neighborhood. another boy or man would drop corn or cotton into the furrow. A third man would follow with another bull tongue plow and cover the seed. A plow like this would only cover one side so he had to go twice to cover one row. Can you imagine how long it would take to plant five acres of corn or cotton? By the late 1870s, there were some improvements in farm equipment. Some of the more prosperous farmers managed to buy gooseneck hoes, and some plows that had two foot pieces on them; they were called double shovels. Wages on the farm were not very high in the "double shovel" days. They were generally $13.50 to $15.50 per month with board and washing included. The workday depended on how long the sun shone in a day. All farm hands were supposed to get up when they heard the coffee grinder in the morning. The coffee grinding usually was around 5 a.m. The schools were built of logs which were stood on end. The building has a dirt floor and a fireplace in the north end of the school. Logs of all sizes were burned. If the log was too long to go crossways, they would stick one end into the fire. When the end burned off, they would shove it further into the fire. School seats were made of split logs which were ten or twelve inches in diameter and twelve or fourteen feet in long. Two stout legs were fastened to each end; these would make comfortable seats for ten or twelve children. Can you even think about children going to school for six hours a day with no air conditioning? Keep smiling, for a smile makes you feel good and helps everyone else to feel good. It is also said that a smile puts wrinkles in your face. Fraternally yours, Nowian M. Kneschk, Reporter —SPJST-

Plates to go will be available. An auction begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds go towards the installation of a new water system and the maintenance of Shillerville Cemetery. Auction items are needed. Call Mary Raska (361) 578-2088 or Marjorie Matula (361) 575-0820. The Shillerville Cemetery began in 1897 and is located in southeastern Victoria County near Wood-Hi. Cash donations will also be greatly accepted. Thanks. Submitted by, Marjorie Matula (361) 575-0820 —SPJST-

Corrections noted Dear Readers, Please note the following corrections to two recent District Four letters in the Vestnik. In the letter which appeared in the June 28 Vestnik, the words "extend an invitation to" were not included in the first line of the letter. The line should have read: "I would like to extend an invitation to our District Four YAD, which will be held on Sunday, July 9 at the St. Ambrose Parish Hall in Wall." Also, please note that in the July 5 Vestnik, the word "and" was not included in the first line of the third paragraph. The line should have read: "The various youth clubs forms and rule book were explained by District Youth Counselor Sandra Jansa." Finally, please note that the photos and cutlines from the District One Spring meeting which appeared in in the July 5 Vestnik, were incorrectly identified as District Six and Secretary Carol Petty was misidentified as Betty Seuhs. I apologize for these errors and appreciate the opportunity to correct them. Fraternally, Brian Vanicek, Editor —SPJST-
