Keep Those Cards Coming Let's Make It Bigger and Better Than Ever
Two weeks ago, in the Vestnik, we put out the call to all members who own small or large businesses to send in their business cards - or general business information - and receive a listing in the SPJST's 2001 Member Services Directory. Already, they're starting to come in. The directory, which is published in January, provides free listings to members who are in a position to provide various products and services to other SPJST members. In addition to the free listings, members will have the opportunity to purchase a standard business card size advertisement or "coupon," for $25. Since the first SPJST Member Services Directory was published in 1995, it has grown to include more than 700 business listings, ranging from accountants and auto mechanics to musicians, beauticians and physicians. Seasonal businesses and part-time businesses are all invited to participate in the directory. The directory, which will be published in January, will also include a comprehensive listing of SPJST sales representatives.
Celebrate C3etb Ti9erttage ttober. ftiontb Only those listings which are deemed "questionable" will not be printed in the directory. Please note that if your listing appears in the 2000 SPJST Member Services Directory', you do not need to resubmit your information only changes and/ or corrections. To be listed in the Year 2001 directory, send your business card or basic information, include your name, name and address of business, service or product provided and telephone number, by December 1, to:
"The directory provides free listings to members who can provide products and services to other members."

Music Is In the Air Polka and waltz music is alive and well in Texas. Most any weekend, you can find an SPJST lodge, hall, festival or church picnic where the happy music is being played. And, even when you can't get out to enjoy the music in person, odds are you can tune in your radio - or Internet connection - and listen to your heart's content! On August 27, area polka dee jays were honored during the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church Picnic for their role in helping to preserve and keep alive the area's cultural and musical heritage. Alfred Vrazel, longtime polka music dee jay, co-leader of the Vrazel's Polka Band and a member of SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts, emceed the presentation which was coordinated by fellow dee jay John Galure. Vestnik Editor Brian Vanicek assisted in the presentation. Pictured above, from left, are: John Zavadil (KCTI-1450, Gonzales), Lee Roy Matocha (KMIL - 1330, Cameron), John Galure (KMIL - 1330, Cameron), Michael Craig (KRXT - 98.5, Rockdale), Dennis Svatek (Internet Polka Show: http://www.geocities.com/ czechpolka/home.html), Rochelle Vogelsang (KMIL - 1330,Cameron), Ronnie Horcica (KAGC -1510, Bryan), Angela Entrekin (KMIL - 1330, Cameron), Thomas Durnin (KOOP - 91.7, Austin), Michael Morris (KTEM - 1400, Temple), Porter Young (KMIL - 1330, Cameron) and Alfred Vrazel (KMIL - 1330, Cameron).

LIBRARY ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM
SPJST Library, Archives and Museum posts May activity report The SPJST Museum received the following donation in the month of May: Nine Record Books from SPJST Lodge No. 8, Weimar - A collection of various types of records that were kept for the lodge from the years 1897 to 1978. These books include the secretary's minutes of meetings and the treasurer's records of the income and expenditures of the lodge. In the month of May, 154 visitors toured the museum. This included the Birthday Club Sisters from SPJST Lodge No. 88, Houston, second graders from St. Paul Lutheran School in Taylor, Texas, and fifth graders from Bartlett Elementary School. Also touring were visitors from California, Connecticut, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, and the Czech Republic. A group from the International Familiarization Tour attending the Pow Wow Conference in Dallas, Texas toured the museum as well. This included people from Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, Greenland, Malaysia, Norway, Romania, Slovenia, and Taiwan. I had the privilege of being interviewed by Kendall Klym, a free lance writer interested in covering a story about the American Czech culture for the Austin-American Statesman Newspaper. Also, a reporter and pho-
tographer from KCEN-TV Channel 6, Temple, taped a segment with me promoting the museum as one of the opportunities in this area for the youth to take advantage of this summer. As you can tell from the wide range of visitors we had this particular month, "the museum is certainly getting around!" We were thrilled to have all of these fine groups and individuals — literally from around the world — to tour and visit with us! October is just around the corner, so that means many people will be observing Czech Heritage Month. On July 1, 1999, the Seventy-sixth Legislature in Texas passed a resolution declaring October as Czech Heritage Month. Plan to make it a priority next month to participate or observe in at least one activity that celebrates the Czech culture. Take a walk back in time to experience the richness and uniqueness of the Czech culture right here in Temple at the SPJST Museum. What better way to fully appreciate what Czech heritage is all about than to look back at our ancestors contributions to our lives and society as a whole. We really do have something to celebrate! Universal Life.
Tailored to Your Needs. Universal Life has been called many things: • The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age. Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things -- and more. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You select an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment. Step 2: As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account
Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs. Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.
Coverage is Flexible. You'have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as
the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically. Option B : Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.
For more information on the SPJST Universal Life certificate, please contact your local lodge sales representative.
More than just life insurance
SPJST introduces LifeGuard 10 plan You mean SPJST has an insurance plan that will pay me a death benefit while I'm alive? Yes, they do. In fact, it will pay up to one hundred percent of death benefit to the insured due to loss of limbs such as hands, legs or sight of both eyes. The product just being marketed by SPJST is called LifeGuard 10. LifeGuard 10 is a ten-year term that is renewable and convertible. What makes it special is that it is combined with an accelerated living benefit rider (ALBR), an accidental death rider, and a dismemberment and common carrier rider. The accelerated living benefit rider allows SPJST to pay the insured if he or she develops a "covered" disease such as heart attack, stroke, life threatening cancer etc. For example, say you have a $100,000 LifeGuard 10 certificate and you have a heart attack. The SPJST will pay you $25,000 (25 percent of death benefit) in a lump sum. This money can be used to pay medical expenses, living costs while not working etc. After the $25,000 is paid to you, the death benefit of your certificate will be reduced to $75,000 and your premiums will be readjusted to $75,000 of coverage. Another feature of LifeGuard 10 is the Common Carrier Rider. The SPJST will pay your beneficiary 300 percent of the death benefit if you die while riding as a fare-paying passenger on a common carrier. No need for flight insurance if you have LifeGuard 10. LifeGuard 10 is issued ages 18 to 60 on male/female, smoker/nonsmoker premiums with a minimum
issue amount of $10,000. For example, you're a male, age 35, nonsmoker, and need $50,000 of coverage. The premium including all riders is $31.20 monthly for 10 years and then at age 45, monthly premiums increase to $48.79. For more information on the SPJST LifeGuard 10 product, contact your local lodge sales representative or the SPJST Home Office can you get you in contact with a sales representative in your area. Here's a summary of the features LifeGuard 10 offers:
"The living benefit rider allows SPJST to pay the insured if he or she develops a 'covered' disease."
• 25 percent of death benefit to a living insured in case of one of the following events: heart attack, stroke, life threatening cancer, coronary artery bypass surgery • 50 percent of death benefit to a living insured in case of: Female cancers: breast, ovarian, uterus and cervix Male cancers: prostate and testicular
Dismemberment*: loss of one hand, one foot or the sight of one eye Payment of a dismemberment benefit does not reduce the face amount. 100 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon insured's death or to insured in case of loss of both hands, both feet, sight of both eyes or any combination thereof. 200 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon insured's accidental death. 300 percent of death benefit to designated beneficiary upon the insured's accidental death while riding as a fare paying, passenger on a common carrier.

Lodge 54, West member suggests ways to promote Czech heritage The clock is ticking! It is time to get on the band wagon and start thinking about what can be done to honor the heritage of this state's Czech descendants. During the 74th Legislature Session 1995, House Resolution 83 and Senate Resolution 1023 were passed designating the last full week in October beginning in 1995 as Czech Heritage Week in Texas, signed by Governor George W. Bush. Then, on July 1, 1999, the 76th Legislature of Texas passed a resolution signed by Governor George W. Bush declaring the month of October annually be Czech Heritage Month in Texas commemorating the contributions of Czech culture to the State. The month of October is to be celebrated annually as the "Czech Heritage Month in Texas" giving the Czech Americans an opportunity to remember and to commemorate our rich heritage and reflect how proud we are of our Czech heritage, at the same time paying a special tribute to our ancestors. • Here are some ideas for promoting Czech heritage month in your area: 1. Support Czech music by attending Czech bands playing around the state 2. Support the two Czech newspaper publications in Texas by sending a
gift subscription to relatives and friends in the Czech Republic: Hospodar, P.O.Box 301, West, Texas, 76691 and Nasinec, P.O. Box 636, Granger, Texas 76530. 3. Participate by attending Czech oriented festivals and wearing Czech costumes. 4. Host guests from the Czech Republic 5. Sponsor scholarships 6. Hold egg-painting demonstrations 7. Hold parties with a Czech theme, including Czech singing 8. Secure membership in Czech-oriented organizations. 9. Provide hand-outs with historical data. 10. Presentations of a Czech program nursing homes, hospitals, shopping centers, etc. 11. Present a video or slide presentation 12. Publish a book 13. Run Czech recipes in newspaper 14. Encourage local business stores to advertise special Czech Heritage 'Month sales. 15. Scan the web for information on Czechs and genealogy. Note: Some of these ideas are from the Teachers Curriculum packet complied by Dorothy Bohac, Ph.D. and Janice Swope members of Travis Williamson Chapter C.H.S., Austin, Texas. Dear Members, Our next meeting will be on October 1, starting at 2 p.m. At this meeting, we will decide whether or not we want to tear down the old barbecue pit and build a new building to house a new pit. Woodrow Marek and the planning committee have gone to a lot of work to have plans drawn. The existing building was moved to its present location — maybe 40 years ago — and needs lots of repairs. The plans include a closed in area for barbecuing/etc. and an open pavilion where parties could be held (for rental purposes). It is very important for members to come to this meeting to help us decide on this important issue. This improvement would make Lodge 47 more available for rentals. A covered dish meal will follow the meeting as well as initiation of new members. Fraternally, Adeline Kohutek, Reporter —SPJST-

183, Arlington reports on recent, upcoming events Lodge
Hello, everyone! Sorry I haven't written in a while. I'll briefly update you on the last two meetings we've had, share some pictures and also let you know more about our upcoming dance. I was in Las Vegas during the August meeting which was held at the Golden Corral in Arlington on August 14, 2000. Jerry Kucera spoke to the members briefly about insurance. Then everyone had a nice meal paid for by the lodge. Sorry I missed that one. It was nice of Mr. Kucera to pay us a visit. August Meeting On August 25, 2000, we had our membership drive at the lodge. The meal was outstanding. Thank you, Rudy Rejcek, Tom Soos, Raymond Mikeska and all others who helped put the meal together. We had barbecued brisket marinated in beer—awesome, parsley potatoes, sauerkraut, sausage from West, corn and a large two-flavored decorated cake from the lodge. We had gladiolas and balloon decorations and a patriotic theme. We were visited by Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director and her husband, Gene McBride and his wife, Jerry Kucera and his wife and daughter and District Three Director Johnnie Krizan. They gave an informative slide presentation about the youth and insurance programs. The insurance portion spelled out all of the many plans available. September Meeting Our September meeting took place at the lodge on September 11, 2000. All officers were present. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cecil Phillips. We recognized sick and departed members and friends by a moment of silence. The minutes of the July and August meetings were read by our secretary Daniel Rosnovsky. The bar and kitchen reports were read by Johnny Adamek our president, and Robert Sill passed out the treasurer's and bingo reports and we all went over those. We received some very nice correspondence from the Home Office concerning our membership drive that was held on August 25. A committee was appointed to choose the fraternalist of the year. Shelby Sill, Ann Pustejovksky and Angeline Stiborek will chair that committee. I think we have some people in mind for that honor.

In fact, so good, he had to rush off in the middle of the meeting (probably to sign some more prospective members) and did not know that he was the winner of the door prize! Not much more was discussed and the meeting came to a close. Afterwards, we had a delicious meal of sandwiches, chips, doughnuts and key lime pie. We are fortunate the labor is being donated and with the money in the library fund, plus donations from Lodge 79 and also from the Krouzek for materials, the long-delayed (over 20 years) library will become a reality. A thank you card was received from the Ronald McDonald House for the household goods our members donated. Special thanks to to Kathy Marek for their delivery. Dorothy McCoy announced that eight residents at Sunnybrook Nursing Home were in need of clock radios and it was decided we would purchase them with details to be decided at our next meeting. Once again, we received door prizes from non-members. Father George Harris brought three jars of sauerkraut he put up himself and Judy Majek sent four nice size African violets. Their traditional audience is drawn from the Czech, German and Polish communities that have settled in the state since the last century. With a repertoire largely made up of polkas, waltzes and schottisches, most of the band's songs, with the exception of country and western numbers, are sung in Czech. Included in the $25 admission is authentic "Polka Food"—beer, sausage, German potato salad, fresh sauerkraut, strudel, etc.! District Four, District Seven enjoy cooperative camp
groups and given clues as to where the counselors could be found along with a map of the camp. After a hot and strenuous trek around the camp, one group was able to find all of the counselors. Some of the counselors were well hidden in the dark (in the cinema), in the tee-pees at the Indian campground, in the bushes with something "unusual" crawling on them and even napping in a tree at the challenge course.
Dear Readers, August means it is time to go back to school. For District Four youth, it also meant it was time to head to camp. District Four and District Seven had a fabulous time this year by combining our two groups at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat which is located near Killeen. After a long day at school and drive to camp, the younger campers started with a cool swim in the pool on Friday evening while the older campers played basketball on the lighted court at the retreat. When the younger campers finished swimming, they enjoyed some delicious snacks. The older kids then jumped in the pool for their turn of swimming. Of course, they had to eat too before they headed off to bed quite a bit later in the evening. Rise and Shine! It was rise and shine at 7:15 a.m. Saturday morning. Everyone was anxious to get started on a fun-filled day. Flag raising and a prayer preceded breakfast. Campers were then divided into three groups, all heading in different directions. Each group had a great time on the ropes course, working as a team had to accomplish some challenge. Everyone made a cute doll from a salt shaker that was filled with different colored beans for their craft. The younger children enjoyed their time on the playground facility that resembled a fort while others played basketball, tennis and washer pitching. The teenagers had a fun time decorating the cinema located on the campground for the Saturday night party. Of course, they found time to play the video games in the cinema after they decorated it. Before long, it was time for lunch and getting ready for the SPJST 2000 Olympics. The campers were divided into two groups and named themselves the "Millennium Monsters" and the "Tigers and Jaguars." They challenged each other with contests such as a wheelbarrow race, crawl through the tunnel race and a three-legged sack race. We then had to have a race in the pool to cool things off. The teams competed in a "duck walk" race Each person had to push a stuffed duck across the pool and make quacking sounds as they pushed the duck. It really sounded like a pool full of ducks at times. The "Millennium Monsters" were awarded the championship! After a refreshing snack of ice cream floats, it was time for a scavenger hunt. What better thing to hunt for than a counselor! Ten of the chaperones "hid" around the campgrounds. The campers were divided into several
It's Party Time! It just wouldn't be camp without a Saturday night party, and the year 2000 was no exception. After our evening meal, everyone headed to the cinema dressed in Hawaiian attire for a party. Some of the campers left a pretty good trail with the grass skirts that kept shedding. Campers enjoyed doing the limbo, playing ping-pong, air hockey, computer games and video games. Everyone then got the opportunity to perform on the stage. A form of charades was played with campers acting out various phrases such as "conducting an orchestra," "hammering a nail," and "licking an envelope." The highlight of the evening was a performance by the chaperones and President Leshikar. They sang and pantomimed the song, "The Twelve Days of School for the Children." No one will ever forget Mr. "Don't Wet My Pants" Shorty Williams after this performance! He was hilarious. The campers then headed to the pool for a nighttime swim followed by nachos. Sunday morning saw the campers rising a little slower than they had the day before. But there was still energy left for one more day of camp. Following breakfast, we had a devotional ceremony on the deck that overlooked the camp. It was a beautiful and inspiring experience. Getting all of the campers lined up for a group picture, which can be a challenge, followed this. Then it was time to initiate all of the campers and chaperones attending camp for the first time. Each one was given a "lift up" on the plank blindfolded. Everyone headed back to the dining hall after this for a fun-filled time playing bunco. It didn't take long for everyone to learn how to play this game. Some campers became very intense when they were rolling the dice and were ecstatic when a "6" was rolled. Our last activity at camp was the annual autograph party and farewell ceremony for campers who will not be returning next year because they will be graduating from high school. Cara Jansa and Chase Bubenik were given farewell gifts as a remembrance of all the SPJST camps they have attended. We will miss them next year! I would like to thank everyone who helped transport campers to and from camp. A special thanks to the leaders
Wednesday, September 20, 2000—VESTNIK/11 who assisted me in so many was at camp. Betty Schwartz, Jill Miller, Clay Jansa, Janeece Williams and Donald Williams were all such a tremendous help. I could not ask for a better group! Thanks to Liz Bielefeld and her chaperones from District Seven who were a super group to work with. Everyone was so congenial and I appreciate all of your help in making our combined camp a great success! Thanks, kids, for being such great campers, too. Memories and friendships are made at camp that will stay with you for many years to come. Maybe one day you will even come back to camp as a leader as Clay did! The final thanks go to Melanie, David and Howard for your help at camp and to the SPJST for providing the funds for these children to be able to participate in a camp. This is an experience some children would never have if it were not for the SPJST! Fraternally, Sandra Jansa District Four Youth Counselor (Editor's Note: Watch for related photos in next week's Vestnik.) —SPJST-
