)ciety embodies 'kit of fraternalism non-members — the SPJST a concept that is sometimes easily misunderstood. To some, "it's strictly an insurance company; to others, it's a social club; and, finally, to others, its a cultural preservation society. So who's right? At its best, the SPJST embodies the characteristics of all these definitions, demonstrating that its strength lies in its diversity. Ti-:e SPJST is a society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a "package deal" built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the society together. What's most important to the member depends on his or her station in life. What a seven-year-old wants from his membership is a lot different than what an 80-year-old would like 1 In June, delegates to the Twenty-Eighth SPJST Convention voted to amend the by bylaws by broadening the definition of "social membership" in the SPJST. The new by-law which goes into effect on January 1, 2001, will enable lodges to enroll insurable social members without first requiring them to purchase an SPJST insurance certficate or annuity. Previously, the category of "social membership" had been reserved for individuals "who could not be insured." ARTICLE 1, Section J. Several questions relating to "social memberships" need to be resolved by the Supreme Lodge when they meet later this month, including what costs and/or limiting factors — if any will be placed on social membership in a local lodge. Also, questions remain as to how the by-law change will relate to young people who are enrolled as social members and their eligibility to participate in the youth program.

As such, the Society offers a wide range of insurance programs, annuity plans and mortgage options designed to meet the varying needs of its members. Aembers of Lodge 13, Dime Box, in a group from around turn of the century. The fraternal component of the SPJST further enhances membership by emphasizing Czech heritage and the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. There are few limiting factors placed on local lodges and how they choose to meet their fraternal obligations. Really, what it comes down to is initiative and imagination. The guidelines which describe how the business of the SPJST is to be conducted is found in the SPJST Bylaws. SPJST members have regular lodge meetings and conventions every four years to address the big issues. Reform and innovation are healthy processes and they are what keep the SPJST growing. Reform and innovafion, in fact, provided the basis for the founding of the SPJST.

Planning Offers Peace of Mind News You Can Use

Regardless of your status in life, it's a good idea to analyze your current financial picture and take the necessary steps to secure your financial future. Last Monday, I had the opportunity to sit in the regular monthly meeting of Lodge 8, Weimar which focused on "estate conservation." Attendees, representing five area lodges and District Six Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Matt Vanek, participated in the short course. SPJST State Field Representative Jim Wiest, delivered an hour-and-a-half presentation which touched on several topics, including how to estimate and reduce estate taxes, wills, trust strategies, tax free gifts and charitable giving. In delivering his message, Brother Wiest advised attendees to visit with an attorney or other qualified professional to do the actual work of crafting a personal estate plan. Whatever your needs — whether it's deciding to buy a new home, planning for retirement or your children's education, or simply getting your finances and estate in order, working with a trained professional can be a helpful step in securing your financial future.

The Weimar meeting was significant in that it marked the first-time an estate planning seminar has been held under the auspices of SPJST in District Six. Informational meetings like this perform a valuable member benefit as Gracie Taylor of La Grange, who was in attendance, attests, "I enjoyed the meeting," she says. "I already have a will; still it made me realize that there's a lot more to estate planning than just having a will. Knowing what to do, you can plan ahead so your estate doesn't get eaten up in taxes when you're gone." In spite of the obvious benefits of estate conservation and financial planning, many people never take the time to learn about life planning and the peace of mind it brings. If you are willing and able, please consider the benefits of putting together a plan that includes conserving your estate, setting up guardians for yourself and your children and making plans for your own health care in case of an emergency. Like the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." —SPJST-

Financial

Planners Aren't All the Same

The term "financial planner" is used by many financial professionals. Ask the planner what qualifies him to offer financial planning advice and whether he holds a financial planning designation such as the Certified Financial Planner mark. Look for a planner who has proven experience in financial planning topics such as insurance, tax planning, investments, estate planning or retirement planning. Determine what steps the planner takes to stay current with changes and developments in the financial planning field. If the planner holds a financial planning designation, check on his background with the CFP Board or other relevant professional organizations. Some business relationships or partnerships that a planner has could affect his professional judgment while working with you, inhibiting

the planner from acting in your best interest. Ask the planner to provide you with a description of his conflicts of interest in writing. For example, financial planners who sell insurance policies, securities or mutual funds or have a business relationship with the companies that provide these financial products. The planner may also have relationships or partnerships that should be disclosed to you, such as business he receives for referring you to an insurance agent, accountant or attorney for implementation of planning suggestions. — Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards A nonprofit, professional regulatory organization, the CFP Board exists to benefit and protect consumers by setting ethical and competency standards for financial planning professionals.

United States. etween 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated from their native lands to America. A good many of 'those ended up in Texas. Much of the historical information which follows, comes from A History of the SPJST . A Texas Chronicle 1897 - 19802, compiled by Nick A. Morris, past Vestnik Editor and President of the SPJST. Generally stated, the Czech immigrants and their families stuck together. In the 1880s, Czech pioneers in Texas joined other people of Czech descent in the United States in a fraternal benefit union called the C.S.P.S.

the Cesko-Slovanska Podporujici Spolecnost — now known as the Czechoslovak Society of America (CSA). At the time, the C.S.P.S. was the largest organization of the Czech immigration community is the United States. The C.S.P.S. was formed in St. Louis, Missouri on March 4, 1854 and was the first fraternal benefit society of its kind in the nation. One of the main purposes of the C.S.P.S. was .. to foster and preserve the Czech language in this new nation and (to preserve) the general moral, spiritual, d economic well-being of our countrymen. The first Texas C.S.P.S. lodge was organized April 13, 1894. By 1897, there were 27 C.S.P.S. Lodges in Texas. In. spite of this rapid growth, there was considerable discontent among members from Texas and the Midwest that the C.S.P.S. insurance premium guidelines were overwhelmingly skewed in favor of eastern industrial workers. From Texas, leading the efforts to reform the C.S.P.S. pricing concerns were I.J. Gallia and J. R. Kubena. The leader of the reformists (Continued on page 4.) —

Senior Lire: When You Need More How much is your life worth? And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older. Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you. The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible. This plan has some limitations on coverage. The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full, amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent. After

three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit. _ No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid. Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit. Under the terms of the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $5,000. Just as an example, the cost per $1,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $6.23 monthly and $69.21 annually. For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $55.85 and an annual premium of $620.35. For more information on the SPJST Senior Life certificate or an application form, please contact your local lodge sales representative. —SPJST-

Around the Districts District Two Invites Young and Young at Heart to Six Flags Over Texas

Bicentennial Summer Campers To build character among the young and to pursue educational, patriotic, social and athletic recreation. These are the goals of the SPJST's statewide youth program. One of the most popular and ongoing youth programs is SPJST summer camp. In this scene from 1976, campers and counselors from District Two gather for a Camp Val Verde group shot. Pictured in the front, kneeling, is former District Two Youth Counselor and current District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky.

SPJST at 103 (Continued from page 3.) in the Midwest was Jan Rosicky of Omaha, Nebraska. Rosicky had made previous attempts at reform as early as the C.S.P.S. Convention in New York in 1886, where he spearheaded an effort to set mortuary premiums for the Western states according to the mortality in the western states. Multiple requests for reform were largely unheeded and shortly after the 1896 convention, Texas delegates decided to secede from the C.S.P.S. In December of that same year, Texas delegates gathered in La Grange and set about the task of forming a new society. They directed their members to provide a Texas constitution: Augustin Haidusek, Frank Cihal and Jan R. Kubena. And in March of 1897, the constitution was submitted to the Texas C.S.P.S. lodges for consideration. Seven of the 25 Texas lodges approved the constitution and withdrew from the older society. These seven lodges represented the vanguard of the fledgling SPJST orga-

nization. Official records of the society indicate that SPJST started operations on July 1, 1897, with 782 members and 25 lodges. The SPJST received its state charter on August 12, 1897. Kubena, widely regarded as the "Daddy of the SPJST" became its secretary — a position which he held until 1938 when he was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident in Galveston. Interesting to Note: Jan Rosicky of Omaha, previously identified for his reform efforts, was in the forefront of a group of Mid-Western states that also broke away from the C.S.P.S. to form the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association (ZCBJ) — which later became Western Fraternal Life Association (WFLA). Setting Up Shop The SPJST's first base of operations was located in Fayetteville, Texas. The reason being that the central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena, had his personal business operations located in that city. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of the SPJST out of a single room in his general merchandise store. SPJST at 103 (Continued from page 4. It wasn't until the early 1930s that the other officers were made full time and additional office space was needed. In 1932, SPJST Supreme Lodge officers rented the building which had previously housed the Fayetteville State Bank for a rental fee of $30 per month. That building served two, then three, Supreme Lodge officers until the early 1940s when the records and offices were moved to a larger building on the square in Fayetteville. Society with a Purpose From the outset, SPJST lodge meetings and social activities made members feel at home and provided them with the economic security of fraternal life insurance. But, there was much more to the SPJST than that .. . Through participation in lodge meetings and SPJST conventions, members learned and applied the democratic processes of their newly adopted homeland. They . grew to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. Moreover, they learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted these American values, SPJST members became better citizens.

The SPJST served its purpose well. During the SPJST's first fifty years of existence, American society and lifestyles changed dramatically. Our state and our nation was becoming progressively more industrialized. At the same time, the country was becoming more urban and less rural. Many people — including the sons and daughters of the early members — moved away from the farms and into the towns and cities. In many cases, they took the SPJST with them. Thus, it was during this time that many of our urban lodges were established. It was also during this time, following the 1952 Convention in Houston, that the SPJST moved its state headquarters to Temple.

"There is great

hope for the future of fraternalism and the SPJST. Simply stated, the SPJST is an idea that is still in the making."

The Move to Temple The move from Fayetteville to Temple was made during the months of August and September of 1953. A decision had previously been reached to completely renovate and remodel the third floor of the Professional Building at Second and Central to house the officers of the Supreme Lodge.

As the years passed, it became increasingly evident that adequate and suitable quarters would have to be sought elsewhere, and the solution seemed to lie in the construction of a new building. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on October 25, 1969 with formal dedication ceremonies which took place on Sunday, January 31, 1971. Again, operating in this new environment, the SPJST had an important mission to fulfill — to provide its members with identity and support at a time when life in was America becoming increasingly impersonal and unstable. Again, the Society served its purpose well. The legacy of these days — the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, youth program and cultural enrichment programs — including the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum — remain with us today.

learned to adjust, the SPJST must respond to meet the financial and fraternal needs of its members in these changing times. One of the most significant fraternal developments in the SPJST over the past decade has been the increase in volunteerism and human services projects. In lodges all over the state, members are committing their time and energy to the support of worthwhile causes, helping people in need by working in hospitals, old age homes and raising money for many causes, including scholarships, food banks, volunteer fire departments, drug abuse programs and various charities. They have taken the best that the SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families — and have extended it to their communities. There is great hope for the future of fraternalism and the SPJST. With a renewed commitment to its members and the communities that the SPJST serves, the best is yet to come. Simply stated, the SPJST is an idea that is still in the making. (Editor's Note: It's a daunting task condensing the SPJST's 103 years to one short article in the Vestnik. Lone Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Children. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST, However, did you know That a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up tc age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. Dry Your Own Spices Herbs such as parsley, sage, basil can be dried in the microwave. Wash and pat dry desired quantity of fresh parsley. Remove leaves from stems and measure leaves in cup to determine timing. Cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside of oven or use a paper board tray. Cover with 2 layers of paper toweling. Spread leaves evenly over toweling. A Czech Folk Tale October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. Here's an old C7eck folk tale for you to enjoy. One day - a gypsy vvorkg oy a priest's house saw a rabbet running across the yard. He caught the rabbit and started away with it when the priest called him back and demanded the rabbit "It's mine," the priest said "because you caught it in my yard!" "It's mine," said the gypsy, "because I was the one who caught it. If it weren't for me, there wouldn't even be a rabbit to discuss!" And so an argument began. The priest suggested that they have a contest, with the winner, earning the rabbit. He recommended that they let the matter drop for the next three days, and at the end of that time the one who had had the best dream would win the rabbit.

Three days passed and the gypsy returned to the priest's house. The priest told the gypsy to recount his best dream first, but the gypsy answered, "You are sucn an educated and respected man that a gypsy sholid not sneak before you do. You shoud tell yours first." The priest, flattered, told his dream. "I dreamed I died," he said. "Four angels came down from heaven and laid me on a white sheet. Each angel, then, took hold of a corner and lifted me right straight up to heaven." The g.,- ,psy looked very surprised and said, "Father! I dreamed that very same dream, and since you were dead, I ate the rabbit!"
