The Journey's About to Begin Consider the Source In just a few short years, the Internet has evolved to become a vast storehouse for information and ideas. Hardly a day goes by when I don't use it in my work or at home. There's so much that is available on-line that isn't readily available from print sources. That isn't to say, of course, that everything you find on the Internet is good or even true. A common complaint among newcomers to the World Wide Web is the mass of junk that exists out there. Well, that's true. Practically anybody can publish on the Internet. For that reason, the information one finds on the web needs to be evaluated carefully. Typically, before I present information gleaned online, I like to make sure sure that it's coming from a reputable source. In the course of my work, I've visited many Internet web sites that deal with the sale and/or purchase of life insurance. Many of them — like our own website — spjst.com — convey good and useful information. One of the best insurance information web sites that I've found belongs to The Texas Department of Insurance (http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/) It's an impressive site with information of interest to the insurance sales representative as well as insurance consumer. For example, one of the subjects that the site addresses is that of "Senior Issues." Here, you can read all about topics ranging from Medicare Supplement Insurance Rates, Annuities and Long-Term Care Insurance to Information to Consider When Buying Insurance. It's like having a "friend on the inside." Here's a brief excerpt from the section dealing with Insurance Fraud:

Someone calls or comes to your home and claims to be from Medicare or the Social Security Administration. These federal programs do not call or send representatives unless asked. Someone insists that you need a certain insurance policy because you do not want to burden your family. Buy only what you need and can afford.

"Web sites such as that provided by the TDI can be a tremendous resource when you're looking for information."

Unfortunately, some people try to take advantage of senior citizens when selling insurance. Always be careful when buying insurance. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Use caution if: • You are asked to surrender certificates of deposit (CDs) and promised higher interest on an annuity. Ask about the guaranteed interest rate and review the contract for early withdrawal penalties (called surrender charges) and other charges. • You receive mail that offers information on "new federal rules that allow you to avoid taxes." Returning the card included in the mailing could bring an insurance agent to your door

• The agent asks you to make the check out in his or her name. Make checks out to the company only, and never pay in cash.

Like I was saying, that's just a sample. The Internet and web sites such as that provided by the Texas Department of Insurance can be a tremendous resource when you're looking for information. If you aren't presently hooked up to the Internet, you might want to consider taking the plunge in the not to distant future. A lot of you, I know, are already plugged into the World Wide Web. To those who are — and those who aren't — please note that if all goes according to schedule, within the next couple of months, the SPJST will hold the distinction of being the first fraternal benefit society in the nation — and that's according to the National Fraternal Congress of America — to have the capability to conduct informational meetings online. At that point, it will be possible for you — relaxing in the comfort of your home — to meet online simultaneously with members from around the state — and the world — on any number of topics . . . So, where will all of this get us? That's largely up to us and what we want to make of it. It's an exciting prospect and the journey is about to begin! Want to learn more about the Internet and how it could benefit you? Give the Editor's Office a call at 1 (800) 727 - 7578. If there's enough interest, an introductory Internet workshop will be organized to address your questions and concerns. Note of Sympathy We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of District Seven Director Bob Bayer and his family on the death of Bob's father, Adolph Bayer, who died November 2 at the age of 82. Funeral services for Mr. Bayer, a career military veteran, were held Monday, November 6 in Castroville, Texas. —SPJST-

their ornaments. Congratulations girls! We also want to congratulate all the other winners and thanks to all of you who participated. You know I am proud of my grandchildren, too! I just have to say "Congratulations" to them also. They are from Lodge 92, Fort Worth, Texas. Mackenzie Turner won first place in her age group, as well as Wesley Pere, who won second place in his age group. Bryson Turner may have won in his group, but I am not sure. Thanks for his participation. Travis Perez isn't quite old enough yet, but he is growing up fast. You know, I just have to tell this, because it was so hilarious at the time. Friday, before we all had to go to Lodge 84, Dallas, we had a Halloween Party at Lodge 6, Cottonwood. As my husband, Eagle-Eye Ray, and myself were going to the hall, he noticed "Christmas Ornaments" on the road. I could not believe it, but Sister Lydia had set them on top of her vehicle perhaps and forgotten as the couple prepared to head for the hall. We stopped a few times along the way picking up those Christmas Ornaments that the children of the Youth Club were to enter in the contest on Saturday. We got to the hall with them and Sister Lydia could not believe it, as she thought they had been put inside the car. They were lucky that they had not been run over. They were all in good shape and some of them ended up being winners in the contest! Again, congratulations to all the winners throughout different categories of the fun day event, such as in the cake walk, country store, bingo, cards, dominoes and even a bean bag pumpkin toss. A little girl was in attendance at this fun day entering in the ornament contest, yet so excited about what she was about to do. Little Miss Bracie Craig was going to board a plane in Dallas the next morning with her family for a trip to Disneyworld, a trip she had won for her family through the "Make A Wish Foundation." She was recognized at the District Three Meeting for this venture. Her sister, Brooke, was also looking forward to this trip for her birthday. Hope your trip was fun and exciting. It appeared everyone was having a fun time in the afternoon. Thanks to Lodge 84 in Dallas for hosting this meeting and for serving up such a delicious meal with dessert. The Texas Knights will be performing from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Sister Carla West opened the option to the members of purchasing

an ad for the Dime Box School annual this year. There was not a decision made on this matter since there is enough time to wait until next meeting and discuss again. Brother Floyd Kostelka suggested that for community use of the hall, they be offered a discount price instead of free because by not charging any rent, the lodge is losing money. We did not make a definite decision about this and was left open for next meeting. Brother Floyd Kostelka also requested when the hall is rented for weddings, family reunions, etc., that an itemized list be made as to how much money is owed for each service to resolve confusion when they come to pay. There was not any other business that needed discussing so Brother Floyd Kostelka mad a motion to adjourn the meeting and Sister Carla West seconded the motion; the meeting was adjourned by Sister Dorothy Rackel. Trustees' Report The trustees met and discussed purchasing new tables and repairs to the roof. They also voted unanimously to terminate the lodge scholarship and transfer the funds to the Supreme Lodge Scholarship Fund for distribution. The main reason for the termination was the difficulty in choosing a recipient each year. Trustees felt that this procedure, although meant to help our young members, was causing grief among members and parents of recipients. J. C. Johnson voted to terminate the scholarship fund and transfer the remaining $500 to the Supreme Lodge. Seconded by Louis Driska. Motion carried. Time Change for Winter Meetings

Under new business, we voted to change the lodge meeting time from 7:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the winter months only. But the local blacksmith had two anvils and some black powder. They turned one upside down and filled the hole in the bottom with black powder and set the other one on top and then heated a long steel rod with a wooden handle red hot and touched it to the powder and fired the anvils with a loud bang to wake all the people in Hamilton to let them lnow that the war was over. That has been done every year since then and is one of the biggest events that the American Legion Post 222 has each year. Please arrive at American Legion Post 222 post about 4:30 a.m. because the first shot will be fired at 5 a.m. The reason it is at 5 a.m. in the morning is because 5 a.m. Central Time is the same as 11 a.m. in Europe. The peace treaty was signed on the eleventh month of the eleventh day and the elventh hour in France. After the anvil shoot, we will serve a breakfast of sausage, biscuits and gravy and socialize and those who have to go to work, can be on their way. Hope to see you there. Keep smiling! a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities Take

The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of money that has either been paid in a lump sum (single pay annuities) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). in planning for retirement, a person may want to "send money ahead" by making- regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income -- Introduction to Lite Underwriting, Dearborn • R&R Newkirk, Death= Financial Publishing, Inc Current Rates Posted on Page Three

Senior Life: When You Need More

How

much is your life worth? And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older. Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you. The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible. This plan has some limitations on coverage. The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent. After three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit. No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid. Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit. Under the terms of -the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $5,000. Just as an example, the cost per $1,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $6.23 monthly and $69.21 annually. For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $55.85 and an annual premium of $620.35. For more information on the SPJST Senior Life certificate or an application form, please contact your local lodge sales representative. —SPJST-
