Heritage, faith come together at Czech Heritage Day observance By Carolan Wishall

ulture

and faith came C together on October 28 in melodious notes and sacred worship when a Polka Mass was celebrated at Czech Heritage Day held at SPJST Lodge 24 in Cyclone. About 1,000 people gathered in the hall to celebrate their common culture, worship in collective faith and remember that God had been good to them in their new land. The faithful stood to honor God and His love for man and sang the words to a song backed by the strains of polka (Editor's Note: This article originally appeared in the Sunday, October 29 issue of the Temple Daily Telegram and is reprinted with permission.)

music. Vrazels' Polka Band provided the music for the Mass and led the audience in the worship songs. "God is one, Three in One, Rich, compassionate . . . God is love, Endless love, Unconditional and true . .." sang the faithful. The Reverend Louis Pavlicek of St. Luke's Catholic Church in Temple was the celebrant for the Mass. Special guest was the Reverend Pavel Smyd of the Czech Republic who is visiting St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple until December. Co-celebrants were the Reverend Walter-Matus and the Reverend Sylvester Fuchs. "I asked Father Walter how much of the Mass was going to be in Czech," Pavlicek said to those gathered in the hall. "He said, 'It all depends on who comes.' (Continued on page 6.)

Czech Heritage Day celebrants settle in for an evening that included a polka mass, sausage dinner, music by the Vrazels' Polka Band and fireworks display. Held in conjunction with national "Make a Difference Day," Lodge 24, Cyclone organizers received a $1,000 check from Wal-Mart

which they donated to the SF.JST Library, Archives and Museum.

Be Our Guest!

Come one, come all to the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House on Monday, December 4, following the Temple Christmas Parade. Admission is free. The Christmas Parade begins at 6:30 p.m. SPJST State King Jarod Olds, State Queen Megan Marcaurele, State Duke Dakota Yates, and State Duchess Danielle Zalman be representing the SPJST in the parade. "The open house will feature live holiday music, Christmas caroling, Santa and Mrs. Claus, face painting, horsedrawn carriage rides, homemade cookies and kolaches, hot chocolate and apple cider, and DARE's Ident-a-Child program," says State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny, who is coordinating the event. According to Sister Zavodny, the SPJST Museum will "come to life" the night of the open house. "A doctor, a farmer, a World War II veteran, a blacksmith, a musician and a seamstress will be on hand to share their life's experiences with visitors touring the museum that night," Melanie says, adding that a traditional Czech Christmas dinner and Christmas tree will also be on display. The SPJST Youth Christmas tree will also be trimmed with this year's winning ornaments and remain up for viewing throughout the Holiday Season. The evening of December 4 promises to be a fun and learning experience for members and friends of all ages. Hope to see you there!

Coordinator. The envelope contained copies of 18 proclamations from cities and counties all up and down the Texas Gulf Coast, declaring October as Czech heritage Month in Texas. I wish I could say that we worked on this public relations bonanza together - but that just wouldn't be true. Brother Elzner did it on his own through personal visits and correspondence - contacting public officials and requesting their support in promoting Czech Heritage Day. His actions provide a shining example of what a creatively alive person can do when he decides to take action. People like Brother Elzner, who choose to be be active with their local lodge or to promote the SPJST and its cultural heritage, know that there is always something that they can do to improve communications and get things done. If you are a naysayer and are saying to yourself, "That kind of thing might work for Jerry Elzner, but it could never work for me," please think again! Wherever you find yourself in life, you can make the situation a learning and fulfilling experience. It largely depends on the attitude that you choose for yourself. To Brother Elzner - and indeed, to everyone who is working to bring new life to our lodges and to the SPJST thank you! Keep up the good work!

"The evening of December 4 promises to be a fun and learning expereince for members and friends of all ages."

The Power of One

Action leads to success. It's a surefire way to make good things happen in your lodge and community. Want a real life example? How about Jerry Elzner of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi? Just last week, I received a package in the mail from Brother Elzner, who is his lodge's Fraternal Activities

The Choice Is Yours

People who choose to be active are very seldom victimized. The actionoriented person will ultimately get injustices rectified, while the inactive person, or the passive observer, will find himself victimized a lot, complain to everyone, and scratch his head in dismay . . . Even when you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." -Dr. Wayne Dyer

SPJST Unlye gal Life, T ored to Mee!, Your Needs.

Presents Scenes from Secw ndAnnual Bar ecue Cookoff

Universal Life has been called many things:

October 13-14, 2000 Victoria, Texas

• The Plan of the Future • A Computer-Age Plan • A New Concept in Life Insurance • A Plan Custom-Designed for Each Insured It's all of these things. Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2: As each premium is received by

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Elizabeth Vahalik of Lodge 4, Hallettsville is ready for business. District Six Youth Clubs set up game and vendor booths in conjunction with the cook-off.

Step 4: Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits, Option A or Option B: Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death

benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as

the cash value approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically.

Option

B : Increasing Death Benefit. The

death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

For more information on SPJST Universal Life Coverage, please contact your local lodge sales representative or the Home Office at 1 (800) 727-7578.

Czech Heritage Day (Continued from page 1.)

SPJST Museum Assistant Sandra Dubcak, left, and Curator Dorothy Pechal display artifacts at Lodge 24, Cyclone Czech Heritage Day. Pavlicek asked for a show of hands in the audience of those who could speak or understand Czech. More than a third of the audience raised their hands. Smyd spoke a few words to the audience, but because his command of the English language was limited, he spoke entirely in Czech. The Scripture reading from the Gospel of Mark also was read entirely in Czech. "It is wonderful to celebrate faith culture," and said. Pavlicek "Our beautiful customs have evolved and have enhanced the worship. "Let us renew our commitment to continue to promote our culture and religious traditions and our faith," he said The offertory was taken to "At This Sacrifice," whose words remind that God is good and life is sweet. "God is love, and God is mighty. God is ever merciful . . . Life is like a dying ember, Only moments to remain. Increase our feeble faith, 0 Jesus shed thy healing light on us." Throughout, the strains of polka music filled the hall. The music has a soft beat that begs for response. The notes create an uplifting message to the words that might not be possible if they were not polka.

"Krasna Amerika, w as sung entirely Czech and then again in English. "Krasna, To je krasna, to je krasna Amerika" translated into the sweet words "Beautiful, yes, it's beautiful. It's our beautiful America." "This is a mixing of the sacred with the secular," Pavlicek said. "Immigrants brought their music and culture with them, and it's a desire to hold onto it and pass it onto the youth." Polka Mass, however, is only about 20 years old, Pavlicek said, with its roots in Minnesota. "It is common in the upper Midwest, but has spread throughout the country." Pavlicek gave special credit to Vrazels' Polka Band noting that "If you're going to have a Polka Mass, you have to have them there." The band began in 1953, and two original members, Alfred Vrazel and Anton Vrazel, are still with the band that plays almost every weekend of the year and performs two or three Polka Masses a year. Other members are Thomas Strmiska, Albert Heselmeyer, David Trojacek and Cindy Strmiska. All of the band members speak Czech, and many of the songs are sung in their native language. "I didn't know English when I went to school," said Alfred Vrazel. "My mother and father spoke Czech." Czech Heritage Day also featured a public dance, silent auction, a bake sale with freshly made kolaches and other sweets, a sausage dinner and a display of several historical items from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. On display were several farm implements from the turn of the century, a music box dating from the early 1850s, a coffee percolator from 1914, a salad bowl from1905 and a picture of the Ocker Church Convention attendees from July 5 - 6, 1916. A half-hour fireworks display presented by the Texas Pyrotechnics Association capped the evening.

"Immigrants brought their music and culture with them, and it's a desire to hold onto it and pass it onto the youth."

We can be proud of their morals and standards becasue of what we teach our children through being involved with our youth clubs. It is our job to help them out and encourage them to be as active as they can. I challenge you to get your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews involved in a Youth Club today. I know we can make a difference! Heidi Bartek Youth Club Leader —SPJST-

I truly believe that our children are this country's future! We need to be proud of our youth and support them in every way we can. I can personally say that I am very proud of each and every member of Lodge 47's youth club — those active and those who
