Linking the Past With the Future Thanks for Giving Grandparents and grandchildren, Together they create a chain of love Linking the past with the future. The chain may lengthen, but will never part. -Author Unknown Thanksgiving. What better time to remember some of very special people in our lives Grandma and Grandpa. It really doesn't matter how old you are, somewhere down the line, a grandma and grandpa preceded you and - if you were lucky became a memorable part of your life. So many of my own memories of growing up on the farm include warm recollections of the grandmother who lived with us. When I was born in 1960, my 'Aternal grandmother was already in her seventies. That probably explains at least to me - why she never seemed to age. A woman of great faith and good humor, Grandma died in 1987 at the age of 100. Years later, she remains an inspiration. Widowed at 41, Grandma raised five children, managed the family farm and ingrained in us kids the traditions and folklore of her Czech forefathers. So many little things I picked up from her: Like staying away from the stock pond after dusk, fearing that the Hastrman, or sea monster, would drown me; and, during Christmas dinner, finding coins that had been placed under our plates for good luck in the New Year. And, you've heard that phrase "leading by example?" She was very good at that. For as long as she was able - well into her early nineties - she continued to garden, quilt, sew, cook and do whatever else she could do to help those near and dear to her. Family was important to Grandma. And Grandma was important to us. An endearing relationship that spans the generations is truly a blessing. Such relationships help to define
the idea of family as a never ending "chain of love" - that exists in the past, the present and - with the birth of a baby - into the future. We can apply that same idea to the genealogy of our fraternal lodge systern. By virtue of our membership in the SPJST, each of us represents a link to the past and to the future of our local lodges. And, just as loving families foster constructive relationships between the generations, so do good lodges. The older members recognize that the younger members are their hope for the future. As such, the older members encourage the younger members to express themselves, to make a few mistakes, to learn and to grow. Likewise, the younger members recognize that older members have years of wisdom and experience on their side and are ready to listen when their elders offer suggestions. As a fraternal benefit society, one of the SPJST's greatest strengths is its capacity to bring families and friends together. In essence, it is service to each other and to our communities that validates our very existence as a fraternal benefit society. As we enter into this Holiday Season, may we be ever mindful that we are all members of the same family - the Family of Man.
"just as loving families foster constructive relationshi s between t e generations, so do good lodges."

Senior Life: When You Need More How much is your life worth? And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older. Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you. The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible. This plan has some limitations on coverage. The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent.
After three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit. No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid. Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit. Under the terms of the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $5,000. Just as an example, the cost per $1,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $6.23 monthly and $69.21 annually. For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $55.85 and an annual premium of $620.35. For more information on the SPJST Senior Life certificate or an application form, please contact your local lodge sales representative. —SPJST-
also signed for Bill Marek, husband of Kathy Marek. Carrie Veselka had foot surgery but still managed to bake a cake and bring a covered dish since she was one of our hostesses. You can't keep an old Sokol down. We missed Lil Hruska who was still settling into her new apartment having moved from her home of many years. A big house and yard gets to be a burden for all of us. Annie Regmund has also moved into an apartment. Dorothy McCoy brought one of the clock radios she purchased for residents at Sunnybrook Nursing Home for us to see. Several ladies volunteered to go with her to present them. We received a thank you card from Edna Voldan and also a letter from Jerry Sijanksy thanking us for the donation to the Sokol Library. He also gave me 20 copies of the group picture taken at our October meeting. Members present purchased these for 50 cents each. I saw the large picture he will frame for the library and it really turned out good. We should have it by our next meeting. Jerry Elzner gave us several pictures he took at our last meeting. included also were two pictures of the Czech farmhouse being restored at LaGrange and two pictures of the group baking kolaches at Sokol for the October fund raiser. I brought the picture of Helen Pavelka which appeared in the October 14 Vestnik receiving her Kentucky Colonel award from Jerry Elzner for promoting Czech culture as a disc jockey. It will take its place in our scrapbook and eventually in the Sokol Library. In my October report, I forgot to mention that Norma Baker gave each of us a colorful ballpoint pen advertising Sokol Corpus Christi. Thanks, Norma. Becky Elzner handed out new address and telephone listings of current members with a copy of our revised by-laws. She did a great job and we thank you, Becky. After discussing various suggestions for our December meeting, it was decided each member would bring household items to be taken to the Ronald McDonald House. As for our luncheon, Jerry Elzner announced that his twin, Agnes Burge of Kerrville, told him she would like to pay for the turkey served after our December meeting. Dorothy McCoy volunteered to bake it and also make dressing and gravy. Others volunteered to bring the rest of the food so the matter was settled. We will have a turkey dinner on Thursday, December 7 after our regular meeting, thanks to Agnes and Dorothy. Please call Dorothy at 855-2769 if your are bringing a guest. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Becky Elzner and Lillie Hayek and is sent to Evelyn Lovelace, Jennifer Yandell and Frances McDonald. Eight door prizes were handed out after the meeting adjourned and bingo was enjoyed after our luncheon. Season's Greetings! Vlasta Jurcik read a poem "Friends are Like Angels." Sometimes we forget who we are and we need to think more of our friends and help look after them. It gave us something to think about. Correspondence read by Evelyn Trojacek included a thank you from the Sister City Brno thanking us for our donation; and a letter from Eileen Jakubowski offering her resignation as vice president. News of Members Alice Roberts wanted to say hello to everyone. She was unable to attend. Ella Mae Provazek said to tell everyone hello. Also everyone is expected to help clean up
10/VkSTNIK—Wednesday, November 22, 2000 after the party. We voted to table the discussion of the new by-laws at the next meeting. The floor was open for a replacement for our vice president. There were a few nominations from the floor, but no one would accept. We voted to table this until our next meeting. Donations
We voted to give a donation to the Veterans Hospital gift shop in memory of Marie Tobrney. Instead of a gift, everyone is to bring a donation in an envelope to be given to a Czech organization. A memorial donation was given by Theresa Carper for Sharon Myer Bonkowski. Faye Wright read the birthdays in November and we sang, "Happy Birthday" to the celebrants. A motion was made to adjourn and we adjourned to our quotation, "Me to se Vzdycky radi"—Always love another. The "do vyhry" gifts were drawn and passed out. We also had a door prize brought by Esther Cunningham. It was a beautiful handmade poinsettia made with beads. I am sorry I do not know who won it.
