Tschoerner takes top honors at Lodge 29, Taylor tarock tourney . Allen

Tour de Tarocky The SPJST Tarock Tour stopped in Taylor, at Lodge 29, Nov. 18, for its next to the final tournament stop for the year 2000. I'm happy to report that 40, gracious people including a couple of whiners showed up for an enjoyable day of tarocks. Players came from all over the state, Fort Worth, Houston, Rowena, many places in between and even Midland! Yes, Steve Havlak lives in Midland. Now, for the competition: Henry Taisler, a not too often seen participant from Bartlett, had a lock on first place through the first four rounds, aided by a first round score of 251, which was high for the day. The luck of the draw was not with Henry over the next two rounds as several challengers were in position to rise to the top. Allen Tschoerner of Schwertner scored a 192 in the final round giving him a total of 766 for the day, enough to secure first place, his tag on the traveling trophy, the blue plaque and some loose change. Taking second place, the red plaque, was Jimmy Coufal of Seaton, with a 760; third place, the white plaque, was Sonny Klepac of Weir, with a 751 and George Fucik of Schulenburg, the green plaque, with a 751. A Tight Race The tournament scores were unusually close as a mere 44 points separated the top eight players. Sonny drew the high card against George to break the third and fourth place tie. There were no recounts. Overall scores were modest for the tournament. Allen Bartosh had a round of 192, V.J. Hadja of Granger, a 175, Joe Vyvjala of Schulenburg, a 194, Mike Zrubek of Weir, a 214 and amazingly, Walter Muehr won the fifth round with a 149. Earning the no-socoveted last place plaque was Edith Kurtin, Granger with a nice 373 for the day. Thanks to all the players and workers that made this tournament possible. Thanks to the local lodge staff, Edmond and Loretta Tate, John and Lillie Valis, Lillian Och, Edith and Herbert Kaiser, Lucille Tricka, Mark Basile and Tommy Shiller. Also thanks to District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky for some super nice prizes. Fraternally submitted, Franklin Schlesinger —SPJST-

84, Dallas invites members to get involved Lodge

Dear Members: Alert! Important things are happening at Lodge 84, Dallas! You're not just an insurance member, you never were! By purchasing SPJST insurance, you became a fraternal member of a society over 100 years old. One of the prices featured in your insurance package is your obligation to the fraternal side of your membership. This is the aspect that helps us to retain a fraternal nonprofit standard. You are the payee of premiums, and the recipient of benefits before your death. That's the deal. The deal you and your insurance representative made. We at Lodge 84, Dallas don't want you to collect at the time of your death, that would not be fair to either of us. We need you now. y? You became a part of a family of people who share the same concerns and wishes you do. Outside of church and school, there is no better place to raise your family and if you have not yet started a family, then there's no better place to meet people with your same interest. What we need to know is how we can help. For families, all we ask is to look into the moral and fun institution of fraternalism. Youth programs, pot luck suppers, game nights and the once-amonth meetings—that's all—once a month. All held at the same time. "But I have no time," you say, well neither do we. We make time. Time. The biggest word of this century. Time, for our elders was coming in from the fields, leaving their offices, declining dinner parties and still shuffling kids to sports, scouts, dance, choir and other outside activities, once a month to include the lodge. On January 21 in the year 2001, we expect the members of Lodge 84, Dallas, to attend one of the most important meetings in the life of this lodge as well as yours. We will have a free meal, babysitting and entertainment by the teen youth for your children, and an open forum with microphones so all can be heard as to what your needs are. We recognize that the needs of youth, middle age and seniors can be very different and we intend to address these issues. Don't cop out on this very important meeting. We have a great building to hold all sorts of activities. We have officers who care about you, and most of all, we are a fraternal family who holds your welfare and comments in deep respect. You are members of an aging lodge in many ways, but even our recent history is incredible. At Youth Achievement Day in Temple, the awards for outstanding performance were once again unmatched. At the State Fair of Texas, our members performed on several days culminating with our traditional Czech Heritage Day on October on October 8 with 32 adult and teen Beseda dancers and 16 little dancers from age two to eight years old. These were the only dancers or singers to perform from any single organization in Dallas, the SPJST Lodge 84. What a tribute.

For any of you who are skeptical of the January meeting, be assured your voice will not only be heard, but listened to and you will have a chance to vote on what you want from your local lodge. Don't disappoint yourself or your lodge. Be there, be heard, be a participant and most of all, be a fraternalist! Thank you fraternally, Justine Yeager, President —SPJST-

88, Houston hosts successful Czech Day Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 88, Houston had a great Czech Day. The hard work of officers, committee members and membership under the direction of our lovely President Clara Broz made this day something special for all who attended. We had one sad note, though. Our esteemed District Five Director Louis Hanus was not there. This is the first Czech Day he has missed since I have been a member for thirty some odd years. He was greatly missed by all. He has done so much and I was saddened to learn he had taken ill, but he is doing well now. Thank you, Louis, for being a shining star for us. Margie and Ernest Anders were chosen to be the new Lodge 88 Czech King and Queen for the year 2000 and 2001. They are both hardworking and have done many things at the lodge. Thanks to Betty Theiss for getting a great band for Czech Day. The youth were working so hard doing their half-and-half prize drawing and making their famous ice cream; they really know how to make ice cream! Thanks also to the Birthday Club Sisters who always do a great job of selling the pastry and all the goodies they come up with. The Kitchen Committee headed by Johnny Broz did a great job as always. The serving members were always there with a bright smile and cheery greeting to everyone. The Harbor Lights Choir were just fantastic. Our very own Lodge 88 Choral Group, under the direction of Helen Hegwood, also gave an outstanding performance. Thanks to the bar people and the ticket sellers Lowrina Linderman, Josephine Pflughaupt and all others just too numerous to mention. Carol Liebscher did a great job on the kolache contest and Pat Bruce handled the Blue Room Booth and with her helpers. Roberta Johnson was such a bright light; she was everywhere. Thank you, Roberta. Dorothy Pflughaupt did such a great job of putting the silent auction together and it really did go over very well. Dorothy is a very hard worker at the lodge. Our newly elected District Five Director Larry Pflaughupt was there lending his talents to make this event such a success. Johnny Broz gathered so many things for the public auction you would have thought you were at K-Mart. It was a very, very nice day and a joy to remember.

Wednesday, November 29, 2000—VESTNIK/9 The District Five Royalty were there and lead the parade of costumes grand march. They did an outstanding job of representing District Five. Thank you, Nicholas Godwin, for standing for our District Five Duke Matthew Boyce, who had previous commitment. Nicholas did a great job. If I have left anyone out (I'm sure I have), please just forgive me. It takes a team effort to bring about such an event and make a success of it. We have quite a team at Lodge 88 when we pull together. If everyone would just come together like members did this day, there is no stopping SPJST—I love it. 1 believe in it so let's a take pride in being a member of SPJST wherever you may be. Fraternally, in love and peace, Marie Stayton First Vice President —SPJST-

Lodge 92, Fort Worth youth members decorate cards for nursing home residents

Lodge 107, Floresville gets ready for peanut festival

We, Lodge 92, recently had our meeting for November. We decorated Christmas cards for our local nursing home. The night before, we decorated a tree showing Czech heritage at North Hills Mall in North Richland Hills, a sub-area of Fort Worth. It was plenty fun discussing old and new business. Amber May 11/29/00 —SPJSTPlease see page two for scholarship application guidelines.

Linda Homer, reported sending a sympathy card to Rosemary Cribble on the death of her sister in-law. A get well card was sent to Lucille Kret on her recent surgery. A telephone message to Anna Johnson from Rosemary was read in which Rosemary sent greetings to all, said she hurt her foot, and that she had a new great-grand son born last night. Lucille Kret thanked everyone for the cards she received during her surgery and said she was feeling great. Linda Horner also thanked everyone for the get well cards she received during her illness. Happy Birthday" was sung to November celebrants Elma Anderson, Merel Kovar and Lena Norman. May you all have many more. Door prizes were brought by Anna Johnson, Nettie Naugle and Annie Whitsell with lucky winners being Nettie Naugle, Rose Nieswiadomy and Libbie Vrla. Linda Lewis also brought two turkey wall pieces which she made with lucky winners being Camille Bolcer and Cathy Ormsbee. Linda is so talented in making things and the turkeys were so clever and pretty. I failed to mention that Linda also made the Halloween table decorations for the October meeting. Thanks, Linda! Alice Barnes thanked everyone for all the food items brought for the St. Thomas Food Bank. The count will be given at the next meeting. Cash donations were also received from Anna Johnson, Nettie Naugle and Billy Starr. All were thanked. Officer Election Results

On October 7-8 our SPJST hall was busy making peanut brittle. An annual event to get ready for the Floresville Peanut festival. The process is very time consuming but well worth it. This year the youth club also made peanut butter cookies to sell in the booth along with the other products. At our meeting we discussed having a float in the parade and how we were going to decorate it. All youth members helped make decoration to put on the float. Thank you everyone for your effort this year. Sincerely, Kara Morrisey Vice President —SPJSTPresident Alice Barnes Vice President Rosie Steinman Secretary Linda Lewis Treasurer May Ann Kozel The newly elected president will make committee appointments at the December meeting. Christmas Plans The Christmas luncheon was discussed. It was decided to have ham which the club will purchase and thanks to Linda Lewis as she volunteered to be our master chef. All other members were asked to bring the same dish as for our Thanksgiving Luncheon. The Mr. Wright game will be played for the exchange of gifts with value of no less than $5. Be sure to wrap and put your name on your gift. The little gift exchange was a lot of fun. I got a lovely Christmas door wreath which will come in handy for the holidays. Rosie reminded Elma Anderson, Ima Lou LaPlant, Kathy Ormsbee and Billye Starr that they are scheduled to be the December hostesses. News of Members

Pat McWilliams and husband, Bob, traveled to San Francisco with another couple on October 7. They had a wonderful time visiting the many irteresting attractions. They watched a Chinese parade which included a dragon, rode the trolley, visited Alcatraz "the Rock", but Pat said that the greatest highlight of the trip was the round trip walk across the Golden Gate Bridge. Elsie Anders and her friend, Betty Landsfeld, traveled to the KC Hall in Ennis to see and listen to the Melodion Band of the Czech Republic. Elsie said that not only did she enjoy the good music, but she especially enjoyed seeing and visiting with old friends, some of whom she didn't even recognize. Rosie Steinman's granddaughter, Jill Parker, ran in the New York City Marathon again this month finishing in her best time ever. Jill ran the second half in less time than the first half. Now, can you imagine running faster n the second 13.1 miles than in the first 13.1 miles. Congratulations, Jill. Be sure to give us an update when you run the Beijing, China marathon next year. Congratulations go out to Rose Nieswiadomy as on October 18. She had another new great-grandson to be born. Special thanks go out to Mary Ann Kozel and Linda Lewis for being our master chefs in baking the turkeys for our Thanksgiving luncheon. Tbey were wonderful! Also thanks go out to Alice Barnes and Linda Lewis for the table decorations. Our November hostesses were Lena Nonnan, Agnes Reznicek, Ann Sustala and Earline Wilson. Actually, it was Anna Marie Moncrief's turn, to be hostess, but since she was out of town, her friend Earline came to take her place. That was so nice! Thanks go out to both Earline and Anna Marie. Following the meeting, grace was said and everyone enjoyed a truly wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon with turkey, dressng, gravy and all the other side dishes and desserts. Following, games were played. The next meeting will be December 6 at 10:30 a.m. Don't forget your assigned dish and gift to exchange, and, Linda, don't forget the ham. See you then.
