What'll You Have? Coal or Candy? The coming Christmas season will pass swiftly into history, leaving footprints for future generations to see and read about, just as now, we remember some of the ways the Czechs and Slovaks celebrated Christmas long ago .. The Christmas season "officially" begins with Saint Nicholas Day on December 6 and ends with "Tri Kralu" (Three Kings) on January 6. The legend of St Nicholas dates back to the Third Century. On December 6, Saint Nicholas, wearing a bishop's robe and traditional miter on his head, visits all homes that have children. Known as the patron saint of children, he descends from heaven on a golden cord with a report on all of the children's behavior. Saint Nicholas is typically accompanied by an angel in white. In the meantime, waiting on earth is a black devil (cert) with horns, holding a whip and rattling a chain. Saint Nicholas reads the names of the good children and the bad children. The angel gives the good children fruit and candy and the devil reaches in his burlap bag and gives the bad children coal and potatoes. As the story goes, the bad children ask for forgiveness and Saint Nicholas, responds, asking the angel to give these children fruit and candy. - Willa Mae Cervenka, Lodge 54, West
CEFT advances appreciation of Czech language, and culture When the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas received its state charter as a non-profit organization on October 19, 1954, it was composed of three men who together served as its first board of directors: Henry R. Maresh,M.D., of Houston; Dr. John M. Skrivanek of College Station; and August Kacir of Temple. As stated in the charter, the purpose was to promote the Czech language and culture in Texas by supporting any educational undertaking by providing for or making contributions as gifts or donations in cash or property to persons or institutions engaged in the promotion of learning and understanding of the Czech language and culture, the study of the
origin, structure and modification of the Czech language and its grammatical relationships as given and preserved in literary embodiments, [and] the dissemination of information to the public concerning the importance of a knowledge of Czech and other Slavonic languages in our citizenry to the effective leadership of the United States of America in international affairs.
"As stated in the charter, the purpose was to promote the Czech language and culture in Texas."
CEFT's Founders The CEFT carried on the tradition of strong support for Czech language and culture in the State that had led to the establishment of the Department of Slavonic (later, Slavic) Languages at the (Continued on page 4)

(Editor's Note: Since CEFT was founded in 1954, many SPJST members have been instrumental in its growth. Indeed, past SPJST Supreme Lodge Chairman Sid Pokladnik served as CEFT's President for many years. A history of CEFT, its mission and those working to make it reality commences in this week's Vestnik. Thanks to current CEFT Chairman and Texas A&M University English Professor Clinton Machann for sharing CEFT's story with us.)

And the Winner Is ... Election results continue to pour in from all over the state! Congratulations to all of our newly elected lodge officers and trustees! Your initiative and creativity will define the character of your lodge and the SPJST in the weeks and months to come. For the SPJST to achieve new heights, it will take the combined efforts and talents of all our members - and especially those who have been elected to accept positions of leadership. Once again, a tip of the hat to all of our newly elected lodge officers - and indeed, to all of our dedicated fraternalists - good luck in the new year! Let us know how we can help . -SPJST-

The Starfish Thrower I ran across a neat story this past week. About how the little things we do for others really does make a positive difference. It was about a small boy who was walking along a beach and picking up starfish that had washed ashore and tossing them back into the water. He was doing this because he knew that once the intense sun cameup, the starfish wouldn't have a chance of surviving. A man who had been evaluating the boy's actions, walks up to the boy and says, "You know, there are so many, you can't possibly save them all. What you're doing really isn't making a difference." The boy picked up a starfish, tossed it into the water and looked at the man and said, "Well, it sure made a difference to that one ... " Isn't that the truth! Don't think - not for a minute that your random acts of kindness don't make a difference. They do. At home, at work and in the lodge. With

University of Texas, and many of the Texas Czechs who became active in the CEFT had been members of Cechie, the Czech Club at the University of Texas at Austin. Among this group was Dr. John M. Skrivanek, who wrote a Master's thesis at UT entitled "The Education of the Czechs n Texas" in 1946 before going on to study at Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia. One of the founders of the CEFT, Dr. Skrivanek was a professor of Slavic languages who developed a Czech language program at Texas A&M University. Skrivanek long served as Secretary-Treasurer of the CEFT, along with J. M. Skrabanek as President and the Rev. Joseph A. Barton as VicePresident. CzechAmericans from across the State served on the Board of Directors during the early years. In addition to the founders and the officers mentioned above, he list includes R. J. Bartosh of Taylor, F. K. Bucek of Hallettsville, Charles Holasek of Corpus Christi, Joseph F. Holasek of West, Jaroslav Kleprlik of San Antonio, Tim Kostom of Houston, Vladimir Malec of Hallettsville, Edward L. Marek of Temple, Mrs. Henry R. Maresh of Houston, Joseph V. Maresh of Granger, Rev. A. W. Nesvadba of Wallis, I. C. Parma of Granger, Mrs. Benita Pavlu of Granger, E. W. Plasek of West, Cyril Pokladnik of Dallas, Ben Prevratil of Dallas, E. W. Schovajsa of Temple, Dr. John J. Shiller of Rowena, Joseph J. Skrivanek of Caldwell, Rudy Sefcik of West, Senator L. J. Sulak of La Grange, and Stephen Valcik of Houston.
Czech programs in Texas educational institutions increased, Dr. Skrivanek led the instructors in affiliating with the Houston Area Teachers of Foreign Languages, which organized a Slavic Languages Section. Dr. Skrivanek also helped to establish cultural ties between the Czechs in Texas and Czechoslovak institutions which survive to the present day. After spending a year's leave at Charles University in Prague, Czechoslovakia,Dr. Skrivanek was instrumental in arranging a year-long visit to Texas by the Czech scholar Vaclav Hunacek of Charles University as a guest of the Texas Educational Agency. He also laid the groundwork for a summer study program designed for Czech instructors and other interested parties from the State of Texas at Charles University in Prague. Although Dr._Skrivanek died before his plans could be realized, his brother Joseph J. Skrivanek later served as the first director of such a program, in cooperation with the Czechoslovak Institute of Foreign Affairs, and this program, in a reorganized form, is still in existence.
'In the m d 1980s, the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas emerged as a re-energized organization."
Early Activity The CEFT strongly influenced the teaching of Czech in Texas high schools, colleges, and universities during the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. Scholarships were awarded to students of the language, and several of these students went on to obtain advanced degrees in Slavic languages while others accepted civilian or military linguistic positions with the United States government. Dr. Skrivanek himself built up the Czech program at Texas A&M University, and the development of the Czech language program stimulated the growth of a Russian language program there as well. At Texas A&M Dr. Skrivanek developed a textbook and audio-tape program entitled Conversational Czech, which was adopted by language programs in other institutions. He also assisted J. L. Chervenka, Sr. in establishing a Czech language program at Rogers High School, at that time the only program of its kind in the United States. As the number of
A Period of Transition Like other ethnic groups in Texas and across the nation, the Texas Czechs began to increase their activities in the late 1960s and a general growth in ethnic awareness continued into the 1970s. Czech-American celebrations such as Westfest and the Ennis Polka Festival became ever more popular, and new events were added in communities across the State, as fraternal organizations became more active in promoting Czech language and culture in State schools, and other support groups, such as CESAT, were revived. However, the CEFT itself entered into a stage of relative inactivity after the death, on December 27, 1972, of Dr. Skrivanek, its guiding light. Cofounder Henry R. Maresh had died in 1957, and August Kacir died in 1973. Secretary, Sidney Kacir as Legal Advisor, Rudy Sefcik as EnglishLanguage Publicity Director, and Jan Vaculik as Czech-Language Publicity Director. Meeting in early 1985, the CEFT officers and directors decided to organize a drive to establish a Czech Chair at either the University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University. An endowed chair of Czech Language and Literature or of Czech Studies had long been a dream among Texas Czech leaders. Although the Czech language had been taught at the University of Texas at Austin continuously since 1926, even that program seemed to have an uncertain future in the eighties, and Czech programs at other universities -- like that at Texas A&M--had been discontinued. The goal of the CEFT was to establish a strong institutional base with independent funding to insure, first, that basic Czech language courses would be offered from semester to semester on a regular basis, and, second, that resources would be available to build a total academic program, both on the undergraduate and the graduate levels--that would be competitive with major Slavic language programs throughout the United States. Initial contacts with officials from the University of Texas and Texas A&M University led to expressions of interest from both institutions.

Having several animals, keeping him was not an option. He will be cremated and buried in my garden. His last memories were of caring, love and gentleness. That, at least, I could give him. I don't know who you are who would allow an animal to live in this condition, but there are no words to describe my anger and disgust. Alice Roberts Reporter —SPJST-
