Slow and Steady Wins the Race
Patience Is a Virtue I'll admit it. When I turn on the television and I see Regis about to make someone's monetary dreams come true on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire," I'll watch. It's fun to play along and imagine what you would do with the money if you won. Buy a new car, maybe? Something for the church? A nice donation to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum or a pledge to the SPJST Education and Nature Center? Or, how about an endowed scholarship? Once the show is over, reality sets in: And I don't mean that in a bad way. It's here - in the real world - that we have the best odds to make good things happen for our families and the communities in which we work, live and play. You've heard the old saying "Slow and steady wins the race?" That's so true. Just ask any couple celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary what it took to get there. "Patience," you're likely to hear. Words like "commitment" and "acceptance" will probably come up, too. Put them all together and they spell "love." When you love the one you're with - or what you're doing - time seems to pass very quickly. A lot of you, I know, feel that way about your association with SPJST. I do, too. Of course, there are things I would change in a minute if I could; but, as in any long-term relationship, patience is a virtue. When I was elected Editor in '92, a gentleman at the Victoria convention asked me if I thought SPJST would still be around when I was his age. Good question! And one which I had not anticipated. "I hope so." That's all I could say ... Ask me that question today and I'll say, "Of course! There will always be an SPJST!" SPJST will continue to exist as long as benevolence, humanity
and brotherhood remain our watchwords and our guide. SPJST members can look to the future with confidence and optimism. The only real barriers we have are those we build ourselves - and they are easy enough to identify. In spite of these obstacles and since its inception, the SPJST has delivered millions of dollars in fraternal and death benefits to its members. At the same time, the Society has survived financial panics and business depressions that threatened and destroyed thousands of businesses. Finally, the Society continued to grow in the face of war and epidemics which increased mortality losses beyond expectation. This record reflects the inherent strength of the SPJST. It remains a glowing testament to the wisdom of its founders, the soundness of its principles and the love of its members.
"When you love the one you're with or what you're doing, time seems to pass very quickly."

State Youth Director extends holiday greetings Dear Members and Friends, Season's Greetings! May your holidays be filled with beautiful moments and cherished memories. I wish you all the joys of this happy season and the best of everything in 2001. Christmas Is ... Christmas is a time of love, A time ofjoy and cheer. Christmas is a peaceful time, That wondrous time of year. A time offaith, a time of hope, Offriendships much more true; Christmas is a joyous time When love shall come to you.
Christmas is a little child. It's tinsel shining bright, Frosted windows, snowy lanes, Candles in the night. It's Santa Claus and dreams come true, So much that gladness sees; It's holly wreaths and silver bells And star-tipped Christmas trees. Christmas is a place called home . A door thrown open wide; A crackling fire all aglow And loving hearts inside. It's happy faces, shining eyes, Soft music in the air; It's tissue, ribbon, cards to write And secrets everywhere. Christmas is a lighted church . . . The very nicest part, Believing in a special way A prayer that fills your heart. It's friendliness so much more real, A blessing from above; Christmas is the special time We greet the folks we love. — Author Unknown Fraternally, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director —SPJST-

SPJST Museum comes to life as Home Office lings in ho!idays The SPJST Museum quite came to life on Monday evening, December 4, when the SPJST Home Office hosted its annual Holiday Open House. More than 500 men, women and children turned out for the celebration. Homemade cookies, baked by SPJST Home Office staff, kolaches, apple cider and hot chocolate were served. Santa, Mrs. Claus, and their elves listened to Christmas wishes and gave goody bags to the youngsters — and young at heart! Harpist Joanna Elliott, Flutist Sheryl Goodnight and Keyboardist Pam Bland entertained with holiday music. Officer Neal Myers and his staff from the D.A.R.E. unit of the Temple Police Department fingerprinted approximately 200 young people for the Ident-A-Child program. Barbara Wilson of Wilson School of Art provided face painting for the youngsters. SPJST State King Jarod Olds, State Queen Megan Mar-caurele, State Duke Dakota Yates, and State Duchess Danielle Zalman were also on hand to greet visitors following their appearance in the. Temple Christmas Parade.
Carriage Rides led the rides around the block for a cheery view of the Christmas lights on the Home Office building. A reindeer basket door prize was won by Evelyn Younts of Temple. Bringing Traditions to Life In the Museum, several areas featured men and women who shared their life experiences with visitors. Blacksmith Wallace Biskup, Dr. Charles Cox, Musician Ralph Milek, Ed Mokry in the Pioneer Room and farming area, World War II Veteran Al Purifoy, Joyce Skrabanek in the sewing area and Willie Mae Vanicek in the kitchen visited with guests throughout the evening. Also on display in the kitchen was a traditional Czech dinner with carp, lentils, peas, sauerkraut, potatoes, barley and mushroom soup, strudel, and vanocka, Czech Christmas bread. The kitchen also featured several customs popular in early Czech households like money under the dinner plates, an, even number of place settings and a chain laid around the table. The Pioneer Room of the museum featured a traditional Czech Christmas tree which was decorated with items like popcorn, gingerbread, walnuts, and ribbon candy. The event was our gift to the community. Thanks to everyone who attended the Holiday Open House or helped to make it a success. Special thanks to Michael Morris and Melanie Reagan for the special arrangements they made in order to get Santa and Mrs. Claus to appear that evening. Likewise, thanks to the elves, Erin and Chance, for their participation! Fraternally, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director —SPJST-

Member expresses thanks for kind pstures, support We want to express our sincere thanks to the wonderful members of the SPJST for your continued sympathy and memorials regarding the death of our beloved Bernard (B.J.) Hlavaty, Sr. who passed away on April 23, 2000. B.J. was an active member and sales representative of SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood and a former charter member, past president and sales representative of SPJST Lodge 183, Arlington. We want to extend a special thanks to those who visited B.J. (he was in a coma) and us at the hospital. Thank you all for your kind words expressed (especially by Johnnie Krizan and Shelby Sill in the Vestnik), attendance at his rosary and funeral services, prayers, support, phone calls, cards, memorials, masses, flowers and food. We also appreciated the kind words and assistance from the SPJST Home Office Staff. We are having a difficult time dealing with the loss of this wonderful and special person. At least we are able to find comfort in knowing that he is now our special angel in Heaven and is watching over us. We are very thankful to have been blessed with the years we got to love him and the many happy memories we are left with. Thank you all for caring about him and being his good friends. Dad loved SPJST and the friendships he made by being an active member and sales representative. May God bless you and your families with good health and lots of happiness during the holiday season and always.

Czech, Slovak radio stations galore on Internet New internet technologies have created new opportunities for Czech American genealogists. Leading the away, various Czech American genealogical societies have established web sites that serve as portals to a vast array of resources that are available on the Internet. Concurrent with these developments, the availability of streaming technologies on the internet has led to the situation where local broadcasters can in fact be heard around the world. For Czech American genealogists and researchers, these new technologies have created the opportunity to hear Czech and Slovak radio stations on their computers through the internet! Here's How to Do It
To make all this happen, you need a computer with speakers or headphones, an internet connection, and a plug-in (additional software for a web browser) such as Real Player which is available from http://www.real.com or Windows Media Player which is available from http://www.microsoft . com/windows/mediaplayer. Both are available for free. At a modem speed of 28.8 kbs, the download time is approximately twenty minutes. Once you've downloaded your plugin, you (Continued on page 10.) The lion's share of thanks for the collection goes to SPJST members and friends of the Society who have donated the thousands of artifacts and volumes on display. The SPJST LAM has been in its present location at the SPJST Home Office since 1971. Curator Dorothy Pechal, assisted by Sandra Dubcak, maintain the various collections. See What It's All About!
The museum is open each weekday from 8 a.m. until noon and from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and on weekends by special arrangement. The LAM also maintains an impressive library and genealogical research section. Dear Members and Friends. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Officers, Trustees and members from Lodge 47, Star Hall. We wish everyone a healthy, prosperous New Year. Lodge 47 has had a very good year. We have accomplished quite a lot. Our misfortune was when the hail storm passed through the area and did a lot of damage to our hall (which has been repaired), but a lot of our beautiful trees were heavily damaged. It will be years before they will furnish enough shade again. Our new barbecue building has been started on and will probably be delayed because of the weather — but we are not complaining! After the droughts and lack of cold weather, the rains and the cold are once again welcomed. Our December 3 meeting was well attended with 50 members and two visitors, Anne Elsik and Albert Matus. Please come again. Flag bearers were Calvin Skrabanek and Woodrow Marek. The youth club were having their meeting and Christmas party at Pam Capps home. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Helen Hejl and John Frank Mucha. May they rest in eternal peace. Reported on the sick list were E. J. Pechal (he was able to attend the meeting), Helen Janacek, Donnie Pechal, Ann Hejl and Bob Sodek. We wish everyone a speedy recovery. Correspondence consisted of a Christmas card from Frank and Irma Klinkovsky; reminder for the fraternalist of the year from Supreme Lodge; and a thank you card from Jane Fuller for the memorial for James Fuller. Gladys Marek gave the treasurer's report. E. J. Pechal read the board minutes in the absence of Edwin Vasicek. President Dolores Skrabanek reminded members of thefund raiser set for March 3 and about our annual picnic for the year 2001. This will be the first Sunday in June which is June 3. She also thanked everyone whohelped her this year as president. The first year is always the hardest and she did a good job as there were a lot of decisions to make. Thank you, Dolores, for a good year and keeping everyone in line. We will welcome E. J. Pechal as president after his year of "rest." Dorothy Pechal, FAC, reminded members about the Hundred Pennies drive. She awarded Hero Pins for 1999. There were 39 recipients. Congratulations to all.

CEFT advances appreciation of Czech lan g uage, and culture PART III - CONCLUSION
(Continued from Last Week) The Ca' I was soon to embark on another major project in the spirit of its founders, and in the fall of 1999, a CEFT Czech Fellowship was formally established at Texas A&M University, based on an endowment of over $250,000. Once again, many generous individuals and organizations had contributed to the fund-raising effort, capped by a $100,000 donation from the heirs of William J. Hlavinka. Like the Texas Chair in Czech Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, the CEFT William J. Hlavinka Fellowship at Texas A&M is unique. It is designed to bring advanced graduate students from two Moravian universities to Texas A&M, establish Czech language classes in the BryanCollege Station area for members of the general public, provide Czech-toEnglish translation services for the Texas Czech community, provide assistance to Czech-American historical and cultural groups in Texas, and encourage cultural and educational ties between the State of Texas and the Czech Republic. The beginning of the new program was celebrated in coordination with a concert of Czech classical music by pianist Richard Urbis at the Presidential Conference Center at Texas A&M University on October 28, 1999. Among the distinguished guests in attendance was Antonin Hradilek, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Washington, DC. The first recipient of the Fellowship was Daniela Kukrechtova, who holds a degree in American Studies from Masaryk University in Brno. The second recipient, expected to enter the graduate program in English at Texas A&M in the fall of 2001, will be chosen by officials at Palacky University in Olomouc.

In 2000, individuals from Uruguay, Denmark, Russia, Chile, Sweden, Switzerland, Great Britain, France and the United States received the award, but the CEFT was one of only three organizations to be so honored (the others were from Australia and the Czech Republic). Current officers of the CEFT include Clinton Machann, Chairman of the Board of Directors; Marvin Marek, President; Woody Smith, ViceChairman of the Board; Grace Skrivanek, VicePresident; Paul T. Hlavinka, Secretary; Ben Trca-lek, Treasurer; Jan Vaculik, Czech Publicity Officer; David Chroust, English Publicity Officer; and Sidney Kacir, Legal Advisor.
