On the Eve of a New Year On the way home last night, I stopped at a convenience store for gas. And who should I run into but Heidi Bartek, youth leader for Lodge 47, Seaton. We chatted for a while and exchanged holiday greetings. On the way home, I had a thought, "That was nice . . . If it wasn't for the SPJST, our paths would have crossed with little or no fanfare . . ." Next morning when I got to work, I checked my Email - to and behold -- there was a follow-up message from Heidi. It made me think. I want to share it with you:
onment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation - you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If your parents are still alive and still married you are very rare, even in the United States. If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.
OINISPIT NSOM
"If you can hold
Thoughts to Ponder If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep you are richer than 75 percent of this world.
someone's hand, hug them or touch them . . you are blessed because you can offer healing touch."
If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or eventouch them on the shoulder - you are blessed because you can offer healing touch.
If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world who cannot read at all.
If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace - you are among the top eight percent of the world's wealthy.
Have a good day, count your blessings, and pass this along to remind everyone else how blessed we all are.
If you woke up this morning with more health than illness - you are more blessed than the million who will not survive this week.
Remember, the SPJST Member Services Directory will be coming out next week in lieu of your standard Vestnik. Best wishes for a safe and happy new year!

Museum curator shares items of interest off the Internet I hope that this letter finds you healthy and not too stressed out as we rapidly approach the new year. The last time I wrote we were right in the "heart of October" and emphasizing Czech Heritage Month in Texas. I hope that you were able to find the time to participate in some activity that helped you to appreciate the Czech heritage and culture even more. And just because we are "over that" for another year, perhaps after all the business of the last few months comes to an end, it might be easier for you to "engage in something Czech" after all the holidays. I know we emphasize the early Czechs that came to Texas, but I would like to share some information with you that was found on the Internet in regard to Czechs in America: 1647 - Frederick Philipse, Protestant exile from Bohemia, arrived in New Amsterdam Chroniclers refer to him as 'Bohemian merchant prince.' He was one of the wealthiest men of his time in
the American colonies. 1660 - Augustine Herrman moved from New York to Maryland. He obtained a 20,000 acre land grant in Cecil and Newcastle counties and built Bohemia Manor. 1776 - William Paca, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence for Maryland, was of Czech extraction. 1836 - Frantisek Vlasak, a successful merchant, settled in New York. He started as a furrier, probably in cooperation with John Jacob Astor, acquired considerable wealth and became one of the few Czech millionaires in America. 1836 - Jan Nepomuk Neumann, born 1811, arrived in New York from the southern Bohemia town of Prachatice. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in the old St. Patrick Cathedral. In 1852, he became the fourth bishop of Philadelphia. He was canonized in 1977. (Continued on next page.)
"I hope that this letter finds you healthy and not too stressed out aswe rapidly approach the New Year."

LAM Report (Continued from page 3.) 1840 - A Czech Jew, Simon Polak from Domazlice, a doctor of medicine, came to St. Louis where he founded an eye and ear clinic and an institution for the blind, which was one of the best in the State of Missouri. 1848 - The first important Czech settlements in the United States were in Wisconsin. A. Kroupa, a political refugee, , was the first Czech who had reached Racine. The City of Racine soon became the first American city with a considerable number of Czech settlers. Caledonia near Racine was the first Czech agricultural settlement. 1848-1857 - Votech Naprstek, considered to be the spiritual father of Czech journalism in America, lived for about a decade in the United States. He published the freethinking Milwaukee-FlugBlatter, the first periodical publication of a Czech in America; although a German-language paper, the FlugBlatter was read largely by the Czechs. Naprstek encouraged the CzechAmericans to organize and publish their own Czech newspaper. 1849 - Francis Adolph Valenta, a Moravian doctor of medicine, left for America. He was probably the first Czech immigrant to settle in Chicago, where he practiced medicine and owned a pharmacy. 1856 - The first school teaching the Czech language and history was opened in New York. Perhaps you already knew some of these facts about American Czechs. I must admit, I did not! There are more
that I would like to write about later. It's really hard to believe that we are at the end of the year — again! And if you have not been by the SPJST Museum this year, you still have a few days left to come enjoy a tour as well as enjoy the sights of Christmas here at the Home Office. (We'll have all the decorations and displays up through the end of the year.) Speaking of sights, the SPJST Home Office held a Holiday Open House for the public and I must say that it was one of the best! Melanie Zavodny, State Youth Director, who coordinated the event had a fantastic idea this year to bring the museum to "life." And did it ever! The doctor's office, blacksmith shop, pioneer room, military, kitchen, music, and sewing areas all came to life with people who have had a lot of experience in their respective areas. The fine people who gave of their time and expertise to share their talents and experiences with others was an added feature this year that just seemed to emphasize even more what the museum is all about. It was nice to be able to talk, for example, to the retired physician that night and ask him questions about anything medical in the office. I must say that for me, it was quite a learning experience as well as a pleasure. I have a hunch that we will see some of these same people next year at Open House. If you did not get to make it this year, here is an early invitation to come next December. You'll be glad you did as I certainly was! But don't wait until next Christmas to come; we still hope to see many of you soon! Stastny Novy Rok from Dorothy Pechal Museum Curator —SPJST-

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood invites members, friends to join in New Year's Eve festivities
The evening got underway with the Temple Christmas Parade. Pictured above, members of the 2000 - 2001 SPJST Royalty Court participate in the procession. They are, from left: Queen Megan Marcaurele of Lodge 30, Talton; King Jarod Olds of Lodge 84, Dallas; Duke Dakota Yates of Lodge 66, Waco and Duchess Danielle Zalman of Lodge 30, Taiton. We had our election of officers at our meeting on December 17. The following officers were elected: President Jerry Sijansky Vice President Anna Marie Moss Secretary Helen Pavelka Financial Secretary Milly Elzner Fraternal Activities Coordinator Jerry Elzner We reviewed our activities for the past 12 months. Everything looked good except a glaring shortage of new members. Brother Sijansky gave us a big pep talk with all the good things that will be happening in SPJST in 2001. We also discussed having two fund raisers for various worthy organizations. We will also be volunteering in a number of community events during the year. I am on a campaign to get our members to write their autobiographies. These autobiographies do not have to be fancy, but should contain essential information that can be beneficial for future generations. Do it now while we still have some of our elders around who can answer some of our questions. So let's all start on this very important project. I do not want you to tell me that you're thinking about it. The above really applies to me also!

88, Houston reports on Eecember meeting, members Lodge
We had a nice annual meeting and I hope the new year will be a good one for our SPJST! We have lost in recent months two hard workers who spent much time at
10/VESTNIK—Wednesday, December 27, 2000 the lodge. Harley Cox was Entertainment Chairman for 25 years and did much to bring up our dances and introduced us to nationally famous orchestras. Jerome (Jerry) Ermis was lodge treasurer for 24 years and lodge president for 14 years; that is a record that can't be equaled easily! He did so much more than being an officers. I am not going to write "guess who this is" except this one time I will because she deserves it. This member graduated valedictorian from high school and took a thorough and complete business course. She got a position from high school and took a thorough and complete business course. She got a position with a large company. It was war time and the office manager was drafted; no one was more surprised than this member to hear that she was to be office manager! She decided to go to night school and as a result, completed two years of college. As a loyal SPJST member, she held several offices and including the board! I am sure you have guessed right—my
sister, Viola Cox. What she and daughter, Jeannette Eubank did for me during my bad months is beyond words! The sales people had a nice seminar at Lodge 88 with capable Vice President Gene McBride. That was just another thing I had to miss! I am sure they all learned a great deal. The Birthday Club had a wonderful dinner with very good attendance. The food (turkey, dressing and ham) was great and that was another thing I had to miss! I am not giving up and plan to come their second Wednesday meeting when they will serve covered dishes and fried chicken. (Thanks, Edna Wehring, for the information.) Goodfellows Charity Dance Sunday, November 26 was the day of our special charity dance to raise funds for the Fort Worth Star Telegram Goodfellows Christmas Fund. Free will donations amounted to almost $2,000. In addition, Lodge 92 donated the cost of the band and the Lodge facilities. Special thanks goes to all who attended and donated to the fund. The dance with the Y2K Country Western Band was very well attended, and yes, there is a fiddle in the band. They have a great danceable beat! The dance committee had a lot of door prizes to give away. In addition, free snacks were served all afternoon. Tentative plans are in the works to hold this charity ball again in the Year 2001. The dance committee was assisted by the following: Martha Durham, Alice and Janie Prochaska, Kenneth Krivanek, Bill Adami, Stacie Hubenak and Roy Rawlings. Who are the Goodfellows? The Goodfellow Fund was begun in 1912 when people brought their contributions to the Star Telegram's main office. Donations totaled $1,242 in 1912. Needy families got a load of coal or firewood and a basket of food and toys delivered on Christmas Eve in horse-drawn wagons. In recent years, the fund gives vouchers to needy schoolchildren in kindergarten through eighth grade. The vouchers are redeemed for clothing and shoes at Penney's and Payless Shoesource. The families must request and state their case to receive the assistance. Christmas Dance Harry Czarnek and the Texas Dutchmen of Houston entertained us on Sunday, December 3. The dance committee had free snacks, and for the non-members who paid admission there were a lot of nice door prizes awarded. Assisting the dance committee were Pam Durham, Janie Prochaska,Cheryl Hubenak, Martha Durham and Debbie Harrison. Congratulations to Leroy and Lois Bates who celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary at this dance. Prior to the dance our District Three Director Johnnie Krizan and State Youth Leader Melanie Zavodny installed the officers and committee members for the year 2001. We were also happy to have David Nauert attend. Johnnie, David and Melanie, we thank you very much for sharing part of your busy day with us. Johnnie, we also thank you for the goodies you brotight from the Home Office. Our family Christmas party was held on Sunday December 10 with a good representation in attendance. Rosemary Gribble and Anna Johnson. A thank you note was read from the Prochaska family. Linda also thanked Agnes Reznicek and Anna Marie Moncrief for the nice thank you notes for her services as Sunshine person. Rosie read and presented beautiful cards to Lydia Alholm and Linda Horner as a thank you as they are not accepting the positions of treasurer and sunshine person for the new year. Door prizes were brought by Alice Barnes, Linda Horner (three), Nettie Naugle and Libbie Vrla with lucky winners being Lydia Alholm, Tommie Dillard, Lucille Kret, Anna Marie Moncrief, Ann Sustala and Annie Whitsell. Rosie thanked Agnes Reznicek and Anna Marie Moncrief for bringing the coffee, sugar and cream and Anna Johnson for bringing the cups. President-elect Alice Barnes announced her committee appointments as follows: Sunshine Person— Lydia Alholm; Bingo—Rosie Steinman; Historian—Annie Whitsell; Reporter—Libbie Vrla. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Leonor Aguilar, Camille Bolcer, Joe Kozel, Lucille Kret, Anna Lesikar, Frances Matthews, Agnes Reznicek, Rose Romeo, Lillian Smith and Ann Sustala. May all of you have many more. Alice Barnes reported 165 items were brought last month for St. Thomas Food Pantry and with the $37 donations, she purchased peanut butter. Master Chef Linda Lewis prepared the wonderful ham we had for lunch and stated that she did not want to be reimbursed for the purchase, but requested that a donation for this amount be made to the Cancer Society. Many thanks to you, Linda, for such a beautiful gesture. We had a very delicious lunch with just about every side dish you can think of. We do have some great cooks in our group. Our December hostesses were Ima Lou LaPlant, Kathy Ormsbee and Billye Starr. It was party time and everyone enjoyed singing Christmas carols. We had a lot of fun on our gift exchange. We played the Right/Left Family game and sure enough no one ended up with his own gift. Sometimes, we had to stop and think which was right or left, but it all worked out in the end. Following this, other games were played. Member News On the day of our party, Anna Lesikar was celebrating her 90th birthday. Her family gave her a big party/dance at Lodge 92 last Saturday night. I didn't go, but I hear that it was lovely party and everyone talked about how beautiful you looked, Anna. I understand that it was a party within a party, as on Saturday was Agnes Reznicek's 87th birthday and her family surprised her with flowers and had a little party in her honor. Congratulations to both Anna and Agnes and I certainly hope I have all the energy they have at their ages when I'm 87 or 90. Bessie Brezina became the greatgrandmother of triplets—two girls and one boy—named Madison, Sydney and Jarred who were born on December 5. The proud parents are Michael and Tracie Rathsell here in
Fort Worth. Bessie still gives her age as 39 and when asked how many grandchildren she has, she just said something over 30 as I've lost count. Nettie Naugle's grandson, David Konen, graduated from Law School at Texas Wesleyan University on December 15—congratulations. Anna Johnson reported on call from Rosemary Gribble who sends her love and Christmas greetings to all. Joe Kozel and his accordion were missed as he and Mary Ann were off enjoying the show at Branson, Missouri. We'll want a full report next time. Christmas will have come and gone when this letter appears in the Vestnik, but I hope everyone had a wonderful time. As usual, I'll have two Christmas days, one in Ennis with sister, Georgie Morales and her family, and one in Arlington with sister, Lil Kosarek and family. It is always fun being around all the nephews and their families. My very best wishes to all for a happy, healthy and prosperous new year. Greeting to cousins, Millie in Illinois and Melton and Jeannie in Odessa. Don't forget: no meeting in January. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-
Our members brought many items for the Ronald McDonald House which Kathy Marek will deliver. They also brought warm clothing and blankets. Jerry Elzner delivered to Metro Ministries. Thirteen door prizes were brought for our drawing. They included fresh picked grapefruit, handmade Christmas decorations, candies, cookies, etc. One door prize was brought by guest, Jo Gilbert and two door prizes were sent by Doris Fariss, daughter of Lil Hruska. I never cease to be amazed by the thoughtfulness and generosity of our members and friends. After singing, "Happy Birthday" to Milly Elzner and Carrie Veselka and remembering Lillian Covill and Diane McRae who were absent, we adjourned to a fabulous turkey dinner. Dorothy McCoy prepared the turkey, gravy and dressing and Agnes Burge paid for the turkey. I'm just sorry Agnes was unable to join us since our meeting date was changed and her vacation time off could not be changed. We had been looking forward to seeing her. We received a thank you letter from the Caller Times for our donation to the Christmas Appeal and also a thank you card from Sunnybrook Nursing Home for the radios which Dorothy McCoy delivered with her granddaughter, Donika. No Christmas cards were brought to our meeting for signatures this year, but Kathy Marek volunteered to send cards from all of us to out-of-town members and shut-ins.

Residents of S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1, Taylor residents put on the ritz for holidays 'Tis the season for glitz and glamour for the upcoming holidays here at the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home Number One in Taylor. Twice a year, the men and women residents are photographed in sequins, furs, gloves and diamonds and make-up for their glamour shots for Christmas. The next photo session Will be for Easter 2001. This activity is creative, fun and a memory of the Year 2000. No matter what their ages are, whether 48 or 102 years old, they find that they can still be and look beautiful. They were pampered with luxuries of the beauty that they bestow. The glitz and the glamour of all the jewelry, make-up, sequins, furs, hats, scarves and reveal the feeling that they can and are beautiful. They are proud to show their pictures. The residents enjoyed the fun themselves. What was most enjoyable was watching each other during the photo sessions. When they would see themselves in the minor prior to their photo session, some would touch their faces, while others would stick out their tongues or just give a big smile. This
activity has become a big success through the hard dedicated work from our volunteers. We were so fortunate to have the volunteer ladies helping throughout the photo session: Leona Stalmach, M ann Stauffer, Anita Seidenberger, M Ann Zimmerhanzel, Bertha Sefcik as well as Assistant Activity Director Pauline Kovar, Activity Director Ima Jean Weise and staff. The administrator is Woody Richards and the Assistant Administrator is Diane Volek. If you come to visit any residents at our fine nursing home, please ask to see their pictures. The photographs are usually at the nursing station if Pauline or Ima Jean are unavailable. Our residents have the outlook: You are never to old for the glitz and the glamour to be beautiful. Sincerely, Ima Jean Weise —SPJST
Ted and Nel Marek of San Marcos, members of SPJST Lodge 155, Austin, originally of Caldwell, recently gave an all expenses paid 21-day trip to Europe as a Christmas present to their family. The trip was primarily planned to visit the family's homeland in the Czech Republic. Although Ted and Nel had visited the Czech Republic twice before, they were especially looking forward to sharing such an experience with their family, and were very saddened that they, could not make the trip due to illness. The children and Grandchildren were still able to make the trip. The family is related to the Mareks, Holubeces, Hejls, Dlabajs, Skrivaneks, and Supaks, all of who emigrated to Texas from the Czech Republic during the mid to late 1800s. Ted is the son of Frank and Rosie Skrivanek Marek and Nel is the daughter of John and Fannie Dlabaj Holubec, all originally of Caldwell, now deceased. The main reason of the trip was to experience the family's Czech heritage. On the course of the trip, the family also visited Berlin, Germany, Prague, Czech Republic, Salzburg, Switzerland, St. Moritz, Switzerland and Venice and Rome, Italy. The family agreed overwhelmingly, though, that the Czech Republic was definitely the highlight of the trip. The following excerpts come from the daily journal kept by granddaughter, Jennifer Hall, of their visit to the Czech Republic.
there were unbelievably nice. They ran out to greet us with umbrellas and offered us complimentary refreshments. We briefly visited Horni Cermne. We were all amazed at how beautiful it was. We went up to the top of a hill that overlooked the city. It had just rained and fog was rolling over hills. It was a beautiful sight. We were back to the pension and had dinner with the Hejl family, who are cousins of ours. They were very nice people, but they did not speak English, so we had a hard time communicating. The next morning, we visited the village of Horni Cermne. Our first stop was the site of the Marek home. Only a little rock wall was left from the original home, but it was interesting to see exactly where they lived. Next, we visited the Brethren Church where the Mareks worshiped. We received a warm welcome there from the townspeople and our third cousin, Miroslav Hejl. He is related to Gordon Hejl. He had pictures with him and Mark Labaj. At the church, 85-year-old Mr. Silarova told the history of the church. He told when the Germans came and how they stole one bell and left the other. Mr. Silarova was very sweet. He had dressed all up in a suit and tie to Greet us. When he wanted to tell us the history, it was very touching how out of respect, all the younger people sat down to listen to him speak. Our hosts then led us to the parsonage where they had prepared many, many delicious pastries and kolaches. They also had coffee and hot tea. Here, we had a chance to visit with the townspeople for a couple of hours. The adults talked about visits to America and Miroslav Hejl showed us his family tree that we were on.
"It is a really difficult language to learn. All I know how to say is 'dobret poopeck`good bellybutton."
July 5, 2000 Yesterday, we arrived in Lundstrom, which is only five miles from Horni Cermne. We spent the night in a little "pension." It was very old looking, and our room, did not have a toilet in it. It was a far cry from the Marriot, but all part of the experience. The people

The time is right to make new friends • • • Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are both rooted in the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other. Going back to the days of the Roman Empire, there were societies organized to unify groups and provide financial aid in time of sickness and death. Even then, there was a keen awareness of the cruelties and hardships that death brings to families. These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. For,that reason, they provided a way for people to meet in friendly gatherings — where selfishness and prejudice were suppressed and the principles of brotherhood were nurtured, thereby establishing a better understanding among the members. You belong, too! Consider attending your next lodge or district meeting — and ask a friend to accompany you! Remember, "The time is right to make new friends."
Highlight of the Trip The Horni Cermne countryside provides a picturesque backdrop for Texans touring the Czech Republic. Pictured, from left, are: Mae Kainer, John Hall, Jennifer Hall, Larry Mare, Becky Marek, Jannette Hall and Johnny Hall.

European Vacation (Continued from page 13.) I talked with Hana Silarova for a very long time. She is one year older than me and goes to college in Prague. It was so interesting to talk to her about the Czech Republic and America. She has visited the U.S. once before, and is leaving again to visit at the end of the week. She spoke very good English and she was a lot of fun to talk with. After awhile, we left the parsonage and visited the home of Joseph Leshenger, the first person from Horni Cermne to go to Texas. A plaque was placed on his home to commemorate him. Before leaving, Miroslav (Hana's dad) invited us to their home. He is a farmer with 36 heads of cattle and about 140 pigs. They had a really neat house, with many fruit trees. He picked delicious cherries for us and made us try his homemade wine. We had a wonderful visit to Horni Cermne and we all want to come back again. In three years, there will be big reunion there. We should all go, too. We then left Horni Chermna for Brno. July 7, 2000 Tdday, we visited Zelechlovice, where the Skrivaneks are from. Although we visited the site of their house, none of it was left standing. The people who live there now, the Malineks, were very hospitable and happy to see us. The older mother said she remembered people coming five years earlier asking about the Skrivaneks. This was

grandma and grandpa. They also talked with her son, Rudolph. Both were incredibly hospitable and he wanted us to take a swig of slivovice, a liquor (plum brandy). It is 50 percent alcohol, and very popular with Czechs. It is horribly bitter liquor and one little swig makes your throat burn for hours. Uncle Tony had to take a shot of it with Rudolph. Both the people at the pension and Mr. Silarova served it to us. It looked like Rudolph had already had a few himself. It was before noon ... July 8, 2000 Yesterday, we left Brno for Austria. We stopped to eat at this place called, "Saloon." It had a Texas motif and it was so funny because they were playing popular country music "This Land is Your Land" and "Out in the West Texas Town of El Paso," but all the words were in Czech ... . . .We were all sad to leave the Czech Republic. Although we had tried hard to learn Czech. It is a really difficult language to learn. All I know how to say is "dobra poopeck"—good bellybutton. Johnny came the closest to learning Czech. He said that he thinks he's beginning to think in Czech, because he doesn't understand what he's thinking. (Thank you Brother Ted Marek for sharing the preceding story with us. Everyone who visits the Czech Republic these days seems to return with glowing reviews — and certainly, this was no exception. Perhaps — one day — we, too, will experience the warmth and hospitality firsthand .. . Oh, wouldn't that be nice!)
