Best-selling author to address Recognition and Incentive Banquet Van Crouch, author of the best-selling book, Stay in the Game, will be guest speaker at the SPJST's Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet to be held February 24 at Flag Hall in Cyclone. After ranking as a consistent sales leader with the American Express Company, Crouch went on to receive numerous awards for outstanding performance in the insurance industry. Crouch's experiences in the corporate arena and as a speaker to many of the nation's professional sports teams give him an enthusiasm for life, a spontaneous sense of humor and a genuine interest in people. His corporate clients have included such well known names as Allstate, American Airlines, AT&T, Farm Bureau and Texaco. Here's what Chicago Bear Walter Payton, a veteran of the Superbowl XX championship team had to say, "I

was always thankful that Van Crouch wasn't an NFL linebacker, because he's the hardest-hitting speaker I've ever heard!' But don't take Walter's word for it. See for yourself by making a point to attend this year's workshop and Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet. All lodges are encouraged to be represented. Registration for the afternoon program will start at 12:30 p.m. The workshop begins at 1:15 p.m. and will include a detailed review of the SPJST's Mission 2100 program. Registration materials for the 2001 workshop and banquet have been mailed to local lodges. Extra, Extra... In conjunction with this year's workshop and banquet, there will also be an optional morning session, starting at 11 a.m., which will address a multitude of concerns and questions related to selling and/or serving alcoholic beverages at SPJST-related events. The free short course will be presented by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and will be open to all interested lodge members. —SPJST-

Let Incentives Work for You The Challenge of Leadership The SPJST is a community in itself and unto the world. Our geographic boundaries parallel those of the great state of Texas. On a personal level, the SPJST- through its members touches many parts of the world. And - in a fraternal sense - SPJST shares a common bond with men and women the world over. Just as the defining unit of civilized society is the family, the defining unit of the SPJST is the local lodge. In the SPJST's quest to achieve new heights as a fraternal benefit society, it will first be necessary to achieve new heights in our local lodges. Achieving real and measurable progress is like climbing stairs. It begins by stepping forward; achieving one's balance; gauging the distance ahead and duplicating the process. It sounds so simple; however, therein lies the challenge for leadership - getting everyone to move forward together. With clearly defined goals and objectives, a local lodge can achieve great things. At its best, the lodge can bring people together in the spirit of

humanity and brotherhood. Those aren't just pretty words. They represent a determined choice. And they are the spark that keeps so many men and women active in their lodge. But even a spark needs fuel to burn. And that's where the SPJST's lodge incentive program can help make a difference. If your lodge receives an incentive award this year, please use it like the plants use the rain - to refresh and revitalize your members and to redefine the mission of your lodge. A total of $155,000 in premium refund checks will be mailed to lodges this week. Incentive award checks totaling $42,000 will be presented at the Incentive Banquet on February 24 at Lodge 24, Cyclone. Please think of this as seed money and put it to work for your lodge. "We suggest that lodges take at least some of their incentive award and channel it back to the membership in the form of a social or some other kind of celebration," says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. (Continued on next page.)

Incentives Work (Continued from page 2.) "We realize — of course — that some lodges have buildings to maintain — but they also have people they need to recognize. It's people — a combination of sales reps and active lodge members — that earned the award. We want lodges receiving these incentive awards to do something nice for their dedicated people," says President Leshikar. The Lodge Recognition and Incentive Awards program has been in place since 1993. "It was kind of a `spin-off' from the annual premium refund checks which we started issuing in 1961," explains Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Mikulas. The SPJST's Mission 2100 membership drive makes lodge incentives for 2001 even better. Provided that the SPJST meets the 2,100 application quota and the lodge achieves its individual lodge quota, the lodge will receive one-and-a-half times its lodge incentive award amount. For example, if a lodge has a quota of 25 new members (Gold Award) and meets its quota and the SPJST achieves 2,100 applications, the local lodge will receive $1,000 x 1.5 = $1,500. Details of the Mission 2100 Membership Drive were presented in the January 10 Vestnik and will be covered in detail on February 24 in Cyclone. In the meantime, SPJST officials will be presenting informa100

tion on the new program at various lodge meetings around the state. So, what's the next step for your lodge in achieving new heights in the year 2001? In addition to spreading the good word about SPJST insurance, please — if you havent't already done so — consider establishing an outline for the coming year at your next lodge meeting. Talk about your lodge and it's place in the community. What you can do — independently or working with other groups — to make a positive difference? Please know, too, that if you need help defining and communicating your lodge purpose, the SPJST Home Office is here to help. We're only a phone call away. One Year at a Time Last week I reported in this column that the SPJST Supreme Lodge selected Bob Bayer of Lodge 107, Floresville in District Seven to serve as Supreme Lodge Chairman. I incorrectly stated that this is a fouryear appointment. According to Article 43 (b) of our By-Laws, "A chairman of the Board shall be elected annually from the seven district directors by the Supreme Lodge . . ." Thank you for your attention to this correction. Please note that this annual election process also applies to the position of Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman, currently held by District Four Director Stanley Broz of Lodge 160, San Angelo. —SPJST133 7 Schimcek, Alvin 133 7 Schimcek, Frances 133 7 Schimcek, Raymond 92 3 Shepelwich, JB and Nina 47 2 Shipley, Mary Junek and Ernest Junek 91 5 Sirocka, Richard 88 5 Slanina, George R. 6 3 Soukup, Al 6 3 Soukup, Georgie 6 3 Soukup, Ricky 15 2 SPJST Lodge 15, Euckholts 9 1 SPJST Lodge 9, Snook 101 3 Stevens, Theresa Annie 130 3 Stransky, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry 88 5 Svoboda, Herman 133 7 Valchar, Rudy 133 7 Valenta, George 24 2 Veselka, Freddie, Debbie, and Ashley 32 6 Vyvial, James 63 6 Wendt, Sallie 189 1 Wentrcek, Jamie 189 1 Wentrcek, Larry 180 3 Wheat, Frances and Gene 15 2 Williams, Douglas and Virginia 6 3 Williams, Jake 6 3 Williams, Tye

88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge

I wrote this letter Sunday evening, January 7 and the next day, January 8, my sister, Alice Braikovich, died. I decided to mail it and I'll write more about Alice in my next letter. In my first letter when I wrote "Guess Who This Is?" about Viola Cox, I tried to keep it short and so forgot to mention their children, Bonnie Hill and Don Cox, both high up in the business world, and their grandchildren, Cayla, Cody, Conner and Courtney Cox and Katherine Parrott, who also are doing well in school. I was glad to hear that Leland Hensley who had surgery is doing fine! He and Dorothy were active on the Entertainment Committee for many years. Talk about our young people being active, there are three Pflughaupt boys, Lee, Karl (King) and Paul, sons of Dorothy and Larry Pflughaupt. It seems they have been active for years—always willing to help! Josephine Bun was in the hospital after falling and breaking her hip. I

was glad to hear that she is much better and is recuperating at JoAnn and Fred Buri's home. I had a nice talk with lovely Faye Evetts. I remember how very active Faye and her husband, the late Dean Evetts, were in our lodge for several years. We miss you, Faye, and we also miss your friends, the Ed Zalmaneks, who also were so active in our lodge! Barbara Gonzales just called me and told me that Nat is better. He has been in the hospital since November 17 and may get to come home in a day or two! If any of you members hear of someone being interested in SPJST, please let our sales people know! The SPJST has wonderful insurance and is so great for children who get to participate in camps and Youth Achievement Day's where they can perform and show their accomplishments! From Entertainment Chairman Betty Theiss, I got the list of dances: (Thanks, Betty.) Saturday, February 3 Manny Green, big band; hosts Mary and Victor Stanek Saturday, February 10 Valentine Dance: Jack Melick, big band; hosts Sydney and Georgie Jurchak Sunday, February 11 Anniversary Dance: Sound Connection, polka, variety; Committee Members Saturday, February 17 City Polka Boys; hosts, Harold Waits Tillie Helmcamp Second Vice President --SPJST--

Calcutta was won by Lydia Marsh, Willie Mae Ermis, Margaret Spahr. Hostess for February will be Edna Wehring, Ellen Miculka and Margaret Spahr. Cakes will be baked by Margaret Spahr. Ellen Miculka and Edna Wehring each will bake two cakes. Before I forget, we do want to thank Helen Hegwood for ordering the chicken for the dinner and Calvin Orsak for bringing it to Lodge 88. We had a great meal in Janaury. Guide Helen Hegwood led us in prayer. Flo Orsag and Helen Hegwood make very nice hostesses. Lodge 88 went on a trip to a casino. They played video of the polka bands. It was very nice, Flo and Helen. This was my first trip with them. My grandson, Ronnie Zahn, came in from Germany on December 17. He went back on January 7. Sincere apologies for the lateness of this Lodge 139 report on our Christmas party held on December 6, 2000. After tests, x-rays, etc. I entered the hospital for surgery two weeks before Christmas. There was no correspondence from the Fraternal Activities Coordinator Ann Pustyovsky, but she will have the final report before February 1, 2001 for the Home Office. We voted on the plan to send out postcards to members in the area about upcoming events. Cecil Phillips had the idea from another lodge. This will keep the people who customarily like to attend our lodge up to date on dances, game nights, etc. We have decided to have family night this, month due to a rental scheduled for the same night. We voted on sending $200, on behalf of the lodge, to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive. Thank you, Raymond Mikeska, for that notion. We are working on the water leak, the alarm system, and ww are accepting bids to have the air ducts cleaned. We are excited about the trip to Cyclone next month! Of course, I will be there and will report on all of the activities and will even have some pictures when it's over. Can't wait to see all of our friends from the other lodges and from the Home Office. Until next time, this is Shelby Sill for Lodge 183. —SPJST-

This letter is a reminder that our first meeting of the new year will be on Wednesday, February 7 at 10:30 a.m. Dues will need to be paid so let's help our new Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel by having the correct amount so that she does not have to make change. I hope everyone had a good time in welcoming in New Year. We had snow and ice in Fort Worth so I imagine most of us folks stayed home by the fireside on New Year's Eve. Thanks, Lydia, for a job well done. Our treasurer of 11 years, Lydia Alholm, decided to retire and did not seek re-election. Prior to serving as treasurer for the 11 years, she was the Club's reporter for seven years. Lydia became a dues-paying member in 1972 when she started bringing her mother during the summer months. It wasn't until 1980, after retiring from the Fort Worth Public School System where she taught school for 30 years, that she became a regular attending member. Lydia served three years in the military during World War II in the Waves and it was in Washington, D.C. that she met her husband, Roy, at a polka dance at the Czech Embassy. When anyone asks Roy what a Finnish was doing at a Czech dance, he will only say "just looking". Well, it looks like he found what he wanted! Lydia is not one to just sit on the sidelines as now she has agreed to accept the position of Sunshine Person. Lydia and Roy are members of SPJST Lodge 92 and Sokol in Fort Worth. Tidbits About Our New President, Treasurer Alice Barnes was born in Nacogdoches, Texas and has six grand-

children. Her cooking specialty is chocolate pie; favorite sports event is wrestling; favorite athlete is "The Rock" (I believe he is a wrestler); favorite baseball team is the Texas Rangers (naturally); favorite soap opera is "Days of Our Lives"; and usual method of protecting her hair when she sleeps is wrapping toilet tissue around her head. Alice is a longtime member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and past president of the Altar Society. We wish Alice lots of luck in assuming her new position as president of our club. We know she will do a good job. Our new Treasurer Mary Ann Kozel was born in Garwood, Texas. She and her husband, Joe, have been married 37 years, have four children and four grandchildren with another expected any day. Mary Ann's hobbies are crafts and quilting. She enjoys traveling with her husband and family. Husband, Joe, is an accomplished accordionist and entertains us at our meetings. Mary Ann and Joe are members of SPJST Lodge 92 and Sokol in Fort Worth. News of Members Irene Green fell recently and injured her knee and elbow. We hope you are much improved by now. Georgia Davidson has been in Harris Hospital, but hope you are home now and feeling much better. I'm sure Georgia is getting a lot of attention from her 11 children. Anna Johnson will be attending another wedding soon as her granddaughter, Melissa Johnson, becanie engaged on Thanksgiving. I didn't get the fiancee's name, but hear that he is Czech, comes from between Austin and Houston and is a member of SPJST. Melissa is a member of Lodge 154, Fort Worth. Rosie Steinman's daughter, Donna Rose and her husband, Jerry Parker, have been invited to the Inaugural Ball in Washington, D.C. this week. Donna, we'll want to see pictures and have a story when you get back. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting. Don't forget your dues need to be paid and it will be Little Gift Exchange. A Little Background The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) stands as a memorial to the pioneer forefathers and mothers who settled Texas and organized SPJST. Credit goes to past SPJST Supreme Lodge President Nick A. Morris for his work in starting the LAM in the fall of 1963 and to Otto Hanus for his diligence as the LAM's first curator. The lion's share of thanks for the collection goes to SPJST members and friends of the Society who have donated the thousands of artifacts and volumes on display. The SPJST LAM has been in its present location at the SPJST Home Office since 1971. Curator Dorothy Pechal, assisted by Sandra Dubcak, maintain the various collections.

What's In a Name Note some of the street names— Kostoryz, Brandesky, Mokry, Kosarek, Moravian, Sokol, Sacky and Everhart. Yes, Everhart; named after Park Everhart who was a school trustee of the original Kostoryz School built on the grounds of the present Sokol Hall. The Kostoryz School grew fast, as the Czech settlers had many children. Although several Czech individuals emigrated to Texas before 1850, the first group immigration took place in 1852, urged here by Arnost Bergmann. Bergmann, a native of Zapudov, Bohemia, came to Texas in 1850. He landed in Galveston and became involved in a German community-in Austin County where he taught school, became a pastor of an evangelical church and farmed wheat, rye, corn and cotton to subsidize his income. Enthusiastic about his new country, he wrote to several friends in Moravia and Bohemia and groups of new settlers soon began to arrive. Hard working farmers, they became tenant farmers until they could afford to buy land.

Matamoros, Mexico. Kostoryz divided the land into 80-acre sections and began advertising the Bohemian Colony in Czech newspapers across the country. Soon families arrived in the Bohemian Colony among them those named Kocurek, Polacek, Rossipal, Zezula and Hruska. Following the arrival of Kostoryz in 1905, Jan Brandesky form Bryan, Texas and his brother in-law, Josef Oujezdsky, came to Corpus Christi. The second major Czech land developer, Mr. Longin Folda, invested in Bohemian colony land in 1914 then bought more land from Kostoryz and sold it off in parcels to Czech-Moravian farmers. The Czechs in Corpus Christi followed their religious traditions and formed a Roman Catholic and a United Brethren community. The German Catholics wanted them to build a church with them, but the Czechs refused, preferring their own church. Consequently, the Germans built their own church, St. Boniface, with Father Ferdinand Gaebel as their pastor. Father Gaebel also said mass for the Czechs in a private home. Father Gaebel died in a fire that destroyed the rectory and Father Joseph Klobouk was appointed the pastor of St. Boniface in 1913 and was able to unite the German and Czech community into one parish. Father Klobouk was assigned elsewhere, and the church had no pastor until 1922 and then Father F.E. Walsh became pastor of 35 families. The parish bought statues of Saints Cyril and Methodius and the parish was renamed St. Cyril and Methodius honoring saints who were Greek missionaries who traveled to Moravia in 863 and established Christianity there. In 1913, Reverend Joseph Barton traveled to the Czech settlements in Nueces County and established a Church of the United Brethren. Stanley Kostoryz, in only 15 years, had transformed virgin brush land in South Texas into a growing Czech community. The majority of the Czechs moved to the Bohemian Colony from older Texas set.tlements and a few came from the Midwest. Family farms were established, an educational system formed and two churches were flourishing. The 1920 census of Nueces County noted 360 Czechs, 97 of them foreignborn. Jerry (Jaroslav) Elzner, who contributed much of the information for this article, now estimates the current (Czech-descent) population to be 8,000 to 10,000. —SPJST-

Just look around you and you'll see evidence of the influence that the Czech heritage has had in the building of Corpus Christi.

First in Line Nueces County was the most heavily settled county in south Texas by Czech settlers. Among the first Czechs to settle in Corpus Christi was developer Stanley Kostoryz, previously a school teacher and newspaper publisher in Nebraska. Mr. Kostoryz purchased 7700 acres of land in 1904-05, called the Rabb-Grim Ranch which had been a part of the land grant belonging to Captain Enrique Villarreal of

of SPJST. For more than 100 years, the SPJST has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live, work and play. We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 41111PrvVl11.11111. 11■1111111•1
