All Well and Good The SPJST is a multi-faceted gem. Whether it's selling life insurance or providing charitable assistance, our strength resides in our ability to make good things happen for our members and those we seek to serve. In that regard, supporting physical fitness and wellness programming presents a "win-win" opportunity for the SPJST and its members. Physical fitness and conditioning programs were once commonplace in the SPJST. "Often, early lodge buildings were fitted with gym equipment, observes Supreme Lodge Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. "I know that," he says, "because years ago, I helped lug a lot of that stuff around." "SPJST was a leader in promoting physical fitness, Helping our members stay fit was a very positive thing for the SPJST. It can be that way again," says Kacir. "Staying fit," of course, means different things to different people. To a professional athlete, physical conditioning is the vital link to staying in the game and receiving a paycheck. To most of us, it's more of a matter of being able to meet the demands of everyday life without getting overly tired. "A 30-minute workout makes a body feel good and helps one put things in perspective," says Brother Kacir. That's experience talking. For years — in addition to work-related obligations —Brother Kacir's weekly regimen has included racquetball, swimming and working outdoors on his ranch. Staying fit can be a fun and enjoyable experience. Seldom do we reach a point where it's too late to start getting active. No matter what you've done previously, you can improve your chances of longevity and quality of life by getting into the habit of regular physical activity. Throughout the year — beginning in this week's Vestnik — we'll be presenting information on the benefits of physical fitness and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The monthly Vestnik youth contests will also key on the importance of staying in shape. How you choose to apply this information in your lifestyle — or lodge — is up to you. And if simply feeling great isn't enough, guess what? You can also earn the prestigious Presidential Sports Award for the personal challenge of adopting a physically active lifestyle. Details are outlined the story beginning on page four.

Just Ask The key to the success of SPJST's Mission 2100 membership campaign is getting people involved. That applies as much to our Home Office personnel as it does to our sales representatives, lodge officers and general membership. Last week, Supreme Lodge Vice President recognized Assistant to the Secretary-Treasurer Dorothy Tomasek as the SPJST Home Office "Recruiter of the Month." In January, Sister Tomasek generated 24 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to local lodge sales representatives. For her initiative, Sister Tomasek earned the coveted "Recruiter of the Month" parking space and a $25 dollar gift certificate to the Olive Garden Restaurant. Home Office personnel generated a total of 86 sales leads in January. So, what's Sister Tomasek's secret to generating sales leads? "Just asking," she says, modestly. "In my dayto-day conversations, I talk about the SPJST and what it has to offer. When I'm visiting with someone who I know is a member, I'll remind them that they can purchase additional coverage or inform them about some of our other programs — like the Scholarship Program, youth program, annuities and so on. "A lot of times," she continues, "I'll be on the phone with someone who is a member — but then I'll ask about their children and grandchildren .. . and ask if they would like meirl) rship information. The are a 1(4 of prospects out there. They may read or hear about something that we have to offer — but it takes a personal touch — just asking — to make the connection. That's what I try to do." Dorothy Tomasek And that she does very well. On September 1, ;col, Sister Tomasek will complete her 49th year of service to the SPJST. She signed on with the Society in 1952 in Fayetteville, shortly before Home Office operations moved to Temple. She and her husband, Charlie Lee, have one daughter and three grandchildren. To Sister Tomasek — and indeed all SPJST members who are working to achieve the SPJST's Mission 2100 objectives — keep up the good work! —SPJST-

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 1, Fayetteville support community preservation project The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 met on Thursday, January 25, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at Keiler's Restaurant for their luncheon meeting. President Polansky read correspondence received from the Supreme Lodge which included: Reminder to send in the "Year-End Lodge Fraternal Services Report for 2000" due February 1, 2001 and refunds to Lodges for 2000 from new insurance sales and renewals. He also canvassed members regarding attending the 2000 Lodge Incentive Awards Banquet on February 24, 2001 at Lodge 24 in Cyclone, Texas. No one expressed an interest in attending. 50-Year Pin Presentations The following three SPJST Lodge 1 members will receive recognition of their long-standing membership with the Society by receiving a 50-year pin and are being contacted regarding their preference as to the presentations of the pins, that is, if they want the 50year pins sent directly to them or to the lodge for formal presentation—Anton Lee Chovanec, Ruth L. Froebel and Allen Gene Schubert. Renewal of fire and liability insurance coverage on the SPJST hall was discussed and it was agreed that the cost of the policy will be split by the Lodge and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce as previously agreed. Preservation Project The City of Fayetteville has received $19,000 in funds from the Texas Historical Preservation Funds to renovate the Fayetteville Courthouse and Gazebo to its original state. They received a bid in the amount of $60,000 to cover the cost of materials and labor to repair the building. The City is therefore seeking additional funds from the community to make these much needed repairs to the historic structure because with out the courthouse the town would lose a lot of "historic charm". Members voted to donate $500 to this fund. Question was raised as to whether or not the lodge should have the annual combined picnic with the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society at Polansky's Lake at Rek Hill since attendance has dropped the past couple years. Several thought the weather played an important role because of the heavy rains on that particular day and also that there were so many other events, activities, etc. scheduled on the same date. In checking the events calendar, Sunday June 10, 2001 was selected for the picnic.

Let's hear what your members and lodge are doing to make a positive difference in your community. Send your news and photos to: SPJST Vestnik, P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503 FAX: (254) 774-7447 E-Mail: bvanicek@vvm.com or info@spjst.com Got a question? Call (800) 727-7578

2001: Ifs Time to

Make new friends... Fraternalism and fraternal life insurance are both rooted in the principle that each of us has a responsibility to each other. Going back to the days of the Roman Empire, there were societies organized to unify groups and provide financial aid in time of sickness and death. Even then, there was a keen awareness of the cruelties and hardships that death brings to families. These early societies had another purpose. They recognized the need of human beings for companionship. For that reason, they provided a way for people to meet in friendly gatherings - where selfishness and prejudice were suppressed and the principles of brotherhood were nurtured, thereby establishing a better understanding among the members. You belong, too! Consider attending your next lodge or district meeting - and ask a friend to accompany you! Remember, "The time is right to make new friends." TAE KWON DO 1.
