PART I (Editor's Note: In their January meeting, Supreme Lodge members paid tribute to retiring Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Six Director Matt Vanek and District Five Director Louis Hanus for their dedicated ser vice to the SPJST. In his years with SPJST, Brother Vanek has earned the reputation as a goal-oriented leader. As Supreme Lodge Chairman, he emphasized the necessity of reactivating SPJST's dormant lodges. Matt Vanek Most recently, in 2000, he helped spearhead the formation of the SPJST's Mission 2100 membership drive. During his years on the Supreme Lodge, Brother Hanus always sought to ensure that the SPJST's core values remain intact. To him, our Society's watchwords — Benevolence, Humanity and BrotherLouis Hanus hood — were principles that he lived by every day. Together, in 2000, Brother Vanek and Brother Hanus were two of the driving forces behind the incorporation of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. This week and next week in the Vestnik, we take a closer look at these two gentlemen and their service to the SPJST.) Matt Vanek: A Man of Persistence "Matt was a great help to District Six and to the SPJST," said Supreme Lodge Vice President and past State Field Manager Gene McBride, referencing Brother Vanek's easy-going style and skill at writing new members into the SPJST. "He made me look good," says Brother McBride. Matt smiles when he hears that. "You make yourself look good when you take care of business," he says. "It doesn't matter if you're selling trucks or insurance. You've got to set goals and then work to achieve them. Brother Vanek joined the SPJST in 1962 as a member of Lodge 39, Bryan; however, it wasn't until 1970, (Continued on page 4.)

Publication Committee Meets The Publication Committee met at the Home Office on Saturday, March 3, to review communication operations and to make recommendations for the coming year. Following this visit, I am happy to report that the Vestnik, Internet web site and related communication efforts of this office all received passing marks. Even so, there remains tremendous room for improvement. The following recommendations were made by the Publication Committee:
ty and optimism they bring to their annual meeting and for their capacity to provide direction in unchartered areas. Finally, thanks, to Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and Communications Assistant Katherine Smith who attended the Publication Committee's morning session and offered their input. Their presence, thoughtful commentary and good humor were most appreciated.
"Thanks to the Publication Committee for the vitality and optimism they bring to their annual meeting.
1. To provide continued support - both in-house and through the Vestnik - in promoting the goals and objectives of the SPJST's Mission 2100 Membership Campaign; 2. To incorporate the new SPJST logo on the cover of the Vestnik; 3. To promote, refine and update the SPJST's Internet web site; 4. To update the Czech lesson section of the Vestnik with new lesson plans, supplemented by audio tapes. 5. To feature, on a regular basis, in the Vestnik, articles and information which underscore the importance of good nutrition and exercise to a healthy lifestyle. 6. To continue working closely with the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board and assist them in achieving their communication and organizational objectives; 7. To work to bring new life and vitality to the Vestnik by including humorous and conversational items, under the "Insights and Outsights" banner in the Vestnik. I will do my best in the coming weeks and months to carry out these recommendations. In some cases, work has already commenced on these initiatives. Thanks to the Publication Committee for the vitali-
Who's Who . . In my haste to get last week's Vestnik on the presses, I ran an incomplete identification block with the cover photo. While Sister Gussie Spacek of Lodge k2, Jourdanton was correctly identified as SPJST Fraternalist of the Year for 2000, I am sorry to report that I did not name her two wellknown presenters. They are, of course, Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer, lets, and Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar. Thank you for your kind attention to this addendum.
Setting An Example
The key to the success of SPJST's Mission 2100 membership campaign is getting people involved in the new member recruiting process. Last week, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride recognized Secretary to the SecretaryTreasurer Trish Mathis as the SPJST Home Trish Mathis Office "Recruiter of the Month." In February, Sister Mathis generated 40 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to local lodge sales representatives. For her initiative, Sister Mathis gains access to the "Recruiter of the Month" parking space and a $25 dollar gift certificate to the Olive Garden Restaurant. Home Office personnel generated a total of 133 sales leads in February. Thanks to all members who have been contributing leads and for the positive example you are setting! Trish has worked for the SPJST since 1998. She and her husband, Ronnie, have two daughters, Erin and Kristen. In addition to her work with the SPJST Home Office, Trish serves as Youth Leader for SPJST Lodge 200, Bruceville-Eddy. -SPJST-

SPJST issues 139 new certificates through second month of Mission 2100 program In February, the SPJST issued a total of 62 new insurance certificates. Through February 28, 2001, the SPJST had issued a total of 139 new insurance certificates. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to generate at least 2,100 new member certificates in 2001. In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges have been assigned production quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.
The fourth column,"Youth Club Quota," applies only to those lodges with active youth clubs and will reflect the number of members signed between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be included in the lodge's overall production tally and apply towards incentive awards. An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The fifth column "Attained Members" reflects the number of new certificates written as of February 28, 2001. SPJST-

Matt Vanek (Continued from page 1 when he was attending the Farmers Mutual Protective Association (RVOS) Convention, that he "really got involved." "The convention was in Temple," Brother Vanek recalls. "Supreme Lodge President Nick Morris and Vice President Joe B. Hejny approached me. We got to talking and before you know it, they wanted me to sign on as a sales representative for Lodge 32, Victoria. "I was flattered . . . I also told them that I didn't know anything about life insurance," Brother Vanek admits. "Don't worry," Brother Hejny said, "I'll train you." "The training — that was the easy part," recalls Matt, who, shortly thereafter, was elected President of Lodge 32, "The Victoria. challenge was finding the time. I was working as a salesman for International Harvester during the day and trying to raise a family." At the time, Brother Matt and his wife Henrietta, had five young sons — James, Matthew, Dennis, Kenneth and Thomas. As the records show, Brother Vanek found the time and, in short order, began producing positive results at Lodge 32, Victoria. "We got a good fraternal program going, too," he says, "with annual Czech fests, a youth club and even plans for a lodge hall." The steady increase in membership and activity of Lodge 32, Victoria caught the eye of the Supreme Lodge members and in April 1971, Brother Vanek was appointed District Six organizer — a position comparable to today's state field representative position. "It was strictly commission and a goal-oriented arrangement," says Brother Vanek. On April 1, Brother Hejny issued a quota for District Six to sell $1 million in insurance in 1971. "No way — that was my first reac-
tion," says Brother Vanek. Previously, the district had never produced more than $250,000 insurance in one year. "Well, I started working with the lodges and getting a few new sales people on board. And did you know, we ended the year with $975,000 in new insurance written! A person can do amazing things when he puts his mind to it." Representing his lodge at the 1972 SPJST Convention in Houston, Brother Vanek was elected by the District Six caucus to serve as alternate director. At that same convention, Brother Paul Sablatura of what was then Lodge 40, Hillje, was elected director. When Brother Sablatura's wife took ill in 1973, he resigned to give her his constant attention. And that quickly, Brother Vanek became director of SPJST District Six. SPJST Supreme Lodge Jerry Mikulas attests to Brother Vanek's recruiting ability and leadership. In 1973, the SPJST posted total yearend assets of $20 million compared to 2000 year-end assets of $132 million. Over the same period, life insurance in force increased from $84 million in 1973 to $319 million at year-end 2000. "Matt deserves a lot of the credit for those steady increases. He had a big hand — especially in District Six — in getting those numbers up," says Brother Mikulas. "He was also one of the first to raise concerns about the dormant or inactive lodges." For 12 years, Brother Vanek served as Supreme Lodge Nice Chairman. Supreme Lodge members elected him to the Chairman's seat following the retirement of Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Three Director Sid Pokladnik at the January 1973 Supreme Lodge meeting. As Supreme Lodge Chairman, one of Brother Vanek's first public presentations was the SPJST's 1997 Lodge Officers Workshop held at Lodge 24, Cyclone. It was then that Brother Vanek outlined (Continued on page 5.)

From Our Readers Reader expresses appreciation for news, assistance
IT TAKES TEAMWORK: Supreme Lodge Financial Secretary Jerry Mikulas and Vice President Gene McBride share friendly conversation with Brother Vanek prior to the start of the October 25, 2000 Supreme Lodge meeting. During his tenure as District Six Director and later as Supreme Lodge Chairman, SPJST assets increased from $20 million in 1973 to more than $132 million at yearend 2000. Life insurance in force also increased four-fold over the period.
Just a note to thank you for publishing the notice that Austin's PBS television station, KLRU, was going to show "The Painted Churches of Texas: Echoes of the Homeland." We were able to watch this program in Georgetown and it was very enjoyable. Several months ago our neighborhood had a bus tour to this area and we went inside three of the churches, the first shown in the program. I hope that if and when it is broadcast nationally, more people can see it. Also, I want to thank Dorothy Pechal for sending me several articles
about customs and festivals in the Czech Republic. These were sent to my granddaughter in Missouri who was writing an article about Czech customs and festivals. Thank you very much. Frances Sparks 124 Trail Rider Way Georgetown, Texas 78628 (Editor's Note: Please note that the one-hour PBS documentary, entitled, "The Painted Churches of Texas: Echoes of the Homeland" will air again Sunday, March 18 at 7 p.m. and on Monday, March 19 at 1 a.m. on KLRU-9 in Austin. Watch your local listings for broadcasts in your area. Thanks for your attention.) —SPJST-

Around the Districts District Two Spring Meeting Sunday at Lodge 18, Elgin Special Notice to All District Two Members: This year's District Two Spring Meeting location has been changed to Lodge 18, Elgin on Sunday, March 18. Registration will start at 12 noon and the meeting will start at 1 p.m. instead of 2 p.m. All members who register by 1 p.m. will receive a ticket for a $75 cash prize drawing. We will have snacks available for those who arrive between 12 noon and 1 p.m. We want all members to be on time for this very important meeting. Not only will we conduct our normal business meeting consisting of reports, 50 and 75 year members, and Fraternalists of the Year nominees, we will also have a progr conducted by Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride on the Mission 2100 program. As most of you know, the Mission 2100 program is a membership campaign for 2001 in which all members are asked to recruit new members. SPJST needs 2100 new members in 2001, and there's some really great incentives for getting those people to join the SPJST! In addition to the Mission 2100 program, Gene will also conduct an officer training seminar.
This seminar will cover all officer duties of SPJST lodge officers, and will include a question and answer session. It's important that all lodge officers attend this district meeting. Our evening meal will be a delicious dinner prepared by Lodge 18, Elgin. The cost is $2 each and will include meat, vegetable, dessert, and drink. As those of you know who have attended meetings hosted by this lodge, they do a fantastic job of getting the food for us and having the lodge set up "just right" for all the things we do during the spring meeting. Again, be at the meeting no later than 1 p.m. to be eligible to win the $75 door prize. In closing, I strongly urge all members of District Two to attend and especially those of you that are lodge officers. We need everyone's help to make 2001 and the Mission 2100 program a success! If you have questions, please call me at (800) 727-7578. Fraternally, Kathy Fritz District Two President —SPJST-

MAKING PLANS: In addition to his SPJST involvement, Brother Vanek has served as the Farmers Mutual Protective Association (RVOS) District Four Director since 1984. Pictured above, Brother Vanek, far right, joins RVOS officers in reviewing plans for the RVOS Centennial Celebration in May. Pictured, from left, are: Second Vice President Mike McMahan, President James May, Secretary Denise Murray and First Vice President Richard Hykel. plans to reactivate at least two dormant lodges within each district during the SPJST's Centennial Year. It was an ambitious goal met with varying degrees of success; however, it demonstrated Brother Vanek's nuts and bolts philosophy when it came to doing business — that it is necessary to make specific goals, make them public and then work to achieve them. To date, inactive or dormant lodges reactivated in District Six under Brother Vanek's watch include Lodge 8, Weimar, Lodge 41, Port Lavaca, Lodge 97, Placedo and Lodge 151, Wharton. Brother Charles Garrett, a perennial SPJST Top Producer since he signed on as a sales representative in 1993, is past president of Lodge 97, Placedo. "I knew Matt from his days of selling trucks for International Harvester," Brother Garrett recalls. "I did a little farming and had always enjoyed dealing with him. "I was an SPJST member from way back, but had never even considered selling life insurance. Matt, on the other hand, was bound and determined to see me be a sales rep." The moment of truth came, according to Brother Vanek, during a 50-year pin presentation at Lodge 97, Placedo, when he explained just how easy it was to become a sales representative. Shortly thereafter, Charles was on board. "It's been great," he says.
Still Very Much Involved
A man of persistence, Matt Vanek remains enthusiastic about the future of the SPJST. He's also practical when he says, "We've got a good product — the insurance and the fraternalism — but it can't sell itself. It takes work." Work, these days, for Brother Vanek includes raising cattle at his ranch north of Victoria and serving as District Four Director for the Farmers Mutual Protective Association (RVOS). A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Brother Vanek served nine months in Shanghai, China, Hawaii and the South Pacific. He remains an active member of VFW Post No. 4146 in Victoria, American Legion Post 166 and is involved numerous other organizations including the Knights of Columbus Council 1329, Sons of Hermann DaCosta Lodge and KIT Lodge No. 115. A loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather, Brother Vanek also "enjoys spending a little more time with the family these days." These special people include his wife of 45 years, Henrietta; five sons; three daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. NEXT WEEK Louis Hanus: A Man of Principle —SPJST-

Family Protection for Less than S2 Per Day? Here's How. If it's been a while since you bought life insurance, you may be in for a pleasant surprise! The cost per thousand dollars worth of coverage has decreased considerably from where it was just a few years ago. In evaluating your family's needs, SPJST's Modterm Program may be what you're looking for. Both 10-year and 20-year plans can be purchased in varying amounts to fit your special needs. Since it was introduced in 1994, SPJST's Modterm — short for "Modified Term" insurance has been one of our most popular insurance programs. And for good reason, the 10-year Modterm certificate carries with it an "age enhancement option" that allows the certificate holder to double coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date at the original premium rate. To find out more about the 10- or 20-year Modterm certificates and how they may fit in with your needs, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

Lodge 84, Dallas
to meet March 14 to vote on naming lodge hall Dear Members, Due a conflict on March 7, the Special Committee meeting was moved to Wednesday, March 14 at the same time of 7:30 p.m. The Special Committee will meet to vote on the name that members wish to give our building to distinguish it from buildings surrounding our lodge—"Dallas" and "Czech" are important in the name. "Dallas Czech Lodge," "Czech Entertainment Center of Dallas" are two title names that members have suggested. Our lodge is in the culture center among other ethnic and historical societies. The lodge was built to house activities for Czechs and Czech descendants enjoy, but folks visiting this territory do not realize this fact. The new name will not take the place of the entry SPJST sign. It will be an added fact. So please take a moment to think of and suggest a name that the next generation will recognize as a place they came come and continue to enjoy. A note: If you are unable to attend, mail your suggestion to SPJST Lodge 84, 2625 Floyd Street, Dallas, Texas, 75204 by March 14. Reports of Committees

Health and Fitness (Continued from page 8.) progression of arthritis in already damaged joints, however. Unfortunately, because of the confusion that has surrounded the arthritisexercise issue, many people with arthritis have avoided all but the very mildest forms of exercise. Many people with less severe arthritis have unnecessarily restricted aerobic activity for fear it would worsen the disease. But a lack of physical activity actually accelerates joint degeneration and worsens arthritis symptoms. A sedentary life-style leads to loss of muscle strength and low fitness levels, which make movement even more painful and difficult, leading to further restrictions in activity, and an even greater decline in fitness. When muscles and joints atrophy, the resulting weakness makes joints even more unstable. Recent studies have demonstrated that aerobic activities, especially those that support body weight such as cycling and swimming, can be appropriate for people 'with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis who have fairly good joint mobility; can increase aerobic capacity, muscle strength and functional status; and can improve pain tolerance, mood and quality of life. Moderation is the Key Arthritis self-care means learning to balance exercise and rest. Too much exercise can lead to pain and inflammation, while too much rest can cause joint stiffness. Exercise must often be done in very small amounts several times during the day if arthritis is severe. If pain persists for an hour or more after exercise, the patient has overdone it and must reduce activity to a lower level. —SPJST-

Senior Life: When You Need More How much is your life worth? And how much did you insure it for? Two tough questions. Questions that get even tougher as you get older. Now, thanks to SPJST's two Senior Life insurance plans, there may be some answers for you. The SPJST Senior Life Plan is for people in good health who can correctly answer "no" to the general health questions on the application. The SPJST Senior Life Graded Benefit Plan is for people with some health problems but are still found to be eligible. This plan has some limitations on coverage. The Senior Life Graded Benefit provides an accidental death benefit for the full amount of the certificate immediately for the first three years. The death benefit from other causes is the refund of premiums, plus 20 percent. After three years, both Senior Life plans provide exactly the same benefit.
No Doctor's Exam Needed
No doctor's examination is necessary and the coverage cannot be canceled, so long as premiums are paid. Moreover, the Senior Life plan has a guaranteed cash value and a certificate loan benefit. Under the terms of the Senior Life Plan, the smallest amount of insurance that you can purchase is $2,000. Just as an example, the cost for $2,000 coverage for a 63-year old male would be $14.46 monthly and $162.42 annually. For $5,000 insurance, that would amount to a monthly premium of $31.15 and an annual premium of $346.05. For more information on the SPJST Senior Life certificate or an application form, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

"Fraternalism has survived because it is good and it deserves to live," according to the authors of The Fraternal Sales Training Program. "Its leaders had a keen realization of the world's need for Fraternalism and the power to see into the future. The lives of these leaders are a challenge to fraternalists today . . . A glorious future looms ahead for the fraternal system with even greater opportunities for serving people, if we accept the challenge and live up to our opportunities."

172, Pasadena reports on February meeting Lodge
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by President Robert Mayfield. The Pledge of Allegiance Was led by First Vice President/ Fraternal Activities Coordinator Weldon Wilkerson after which a moment of silence was observed in rememberance of our sick and departed members. Secretary Jo Mayfield called the roll. All officers were present. Lillia Mae Peter, Historian, was absent. Trustees absent were Clay Stokley and Norman Tofte. President Mayfield welcomed everyone present and recognized visitors District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and wife, Dorothy. President Mayfield asked if everyone had read the printed minutes of both the regular meeting (January 24) and the Executive Meeting (February 14) and asked for corrections. There being none, both sets of minutes were approved as printed. Secretary Jo Mayfield had no correspondence.
Correspondence President Mayfield had a couple of letters requesting our participation; however, the dates for replies were past. One request was from South Houston High School asking that we participate by way of a donation to their SHHS Project Graduation. This is an all-night party following graduation, hosted by parents, and designed to provide graduating seniors with a safe environment that is alcohol and drug free. After discussion, motion was made, seconded and carried that Lodge 172 donate two cash door prizes of $10 each. Motion carried. President Mayfield reported that our dance hall permit had been received. Vice President/FAC Weldon Wilkerson informed the group that the speaker for our March meeting will be Stephanie Orozco of the Red Cross. Financial Secretary Henrietta Krenek reported that we have one new member, Mark Allen Rozell. Motion to accept Mark was made, seconded and carried. She also reported that we had one death claim, Augustina Koudelka. Treasurer Tennie Walla had no report other than the printed financial statement for January.
Chairmen's Reports Vicki Dressler gave her bar, kitchen, rental reports and listed the names of those to whom she had sent get well or thinking-of-you cards to Bobbie Johnson, George Shotwell, Evelyn Selcik, Irving Theiss and Charles
Duvall. It was reported that Charles got burned while working on the motor of his mobile home. Jo Mayfield, Entertainment Chairperson, reported on their visit to Lodge 196 on January 27 for the purpose of hearing that band. They were not pleased with the performance. She reported that instead of giving free tickets to our dances as we've done in the past, she is soliciting free food tickets from some local establishments to give as door prizes at our dances. She has already collected some and will hopefully get more. Mike Johnson and Art Wiederhold, Co-chairmen of Board of Trustees, reported that the work day of February 5 was very productive. Next work day will be March 5. They invited all who will to come. President Mayfield wished happy birthday to Charles Duvall, Rebecca Clark, Jerry Dressler, Jr., Alvin Sefcik, Sheri Wiggins and Leona Zella (Leona being the only one present). President Mayfield also reported that we had moved our last CD to a money market account and left it at Washington Mutual, which is scheduled for merger with Bank United in March. President Mayfield and wife, Jo went down to LaMarque and put a "For Sale"' sign on our five acres. They have had a number of calls, but none of real interest—mostly speculators.
Mission 2100 Briefing Director Larry Pflughaupt was given the floor to show the slides regarding Mission 2100. Those who attended the SPJST Workshop in Cyclone on February 24 saw the presentation, but he did a great job explaining it to the members. It is being explained in the Vestnik for the benefit of all others. President Mayfield presented the Gold Award plaque received by Lodge 172 at the workshop along with our check of $1,175. He also showed the new SPJST logo which will soon be appearing on all items. President Mayfield invited Dorothy Pflughaupt to speak. She is a member of SPJST By-Laws Committee, so she invited everyone who had any input in that area to contact her. She suggested that we be thinking about it for presentation at the next Convention. It's early, but the committee can begin to give it consideration.
April 22 Social Discussed President Mayfield then opened the floor for discussion of our social to be held April 22—activities and menu. The dance will be polka/waltz music. Jo Mayfield was instructed to call two caterers (Mikeska and Kreska) to find out the cost per plate of roast beef, sausage, green beans and German potatoes. She will report to the Executive Committee on March 14. The lodge will furnish coffee, tea and desserts. One piece of dessert will be served with the meal. Other pieces, if wanted, will be sold. There was discussion of District Five Spring Meeting on March 4. Motion was made, seconded and carried that Lodge 172 donate ten, $5 bills for door prizes. Also, President Mayfield said he would like to offer to have the District Five Fall Meeting at Lodge 172 on September 16, 2001. There was no objection.
There had been some prior discussion at the Executive Meeting to make our hall totally non-smoking. After further discussion, motion was made, seconded and carried that the Lodge 172 hall be totally smoke free. Vicki Dressler, Rental Chairperson, discussed some requests for rental of Lodge 172 hall. After quite a discussion, she was instructed to rent to Richey Street Baptist Church and to South Houston Police Department for their ball, both at our charity rate plus clean-up. President Mayfield informed the group that the copy machine was not working. The warranty had expired and it is very expensive to have it repaired. After quite a discussion, it was agreed that the machine will not be repaired. It is far less expensive to have our copies made elsewhere. The cost of operating our machine far outweighs the convenience. He also spoke about the workshop speaker and reminded all who didn't go just what they missed. Meeting adjourned and door prizes were given. Robert thanked Director Pflughaupt and Dorothy for the prizes they donated. Art Wiederhold was the recipient of the $10 prize. Cakes for refreshments were furnished by Jo Mayfield and Tennie Walla. Be reminded that our next regular meeting date is March 28 and is covered dish. Submitted by, Tennie Walla, Reporter —SPJST--

204, Stephenville reports on February meeting Lodge
The regular meeting of Lodge 204 was held at the Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico of Tuesday, February 27. We had to drive through a heavy rain and thunderstorm to get there, but everything turned out very good after we got there. We all enjoyed a good meal and socialized before the regular meeting. Norman and Gracie Kneschk about the awards banquet at Cyclone SPJST hall and that lodge 204 won an award and $620 which was given to the treasurer to be deposited in the bank. Wednesday, March 14, 2001—VESTNIK/13 department for starters then budget some for our next Christmas party this year. We can think of more as the year goes along Quotas for next year were discussed and if everyone works together, we can do it.
In History ... How many can remember 1951 in history when the U.N. forces halted Red Drive in Korea; the XXII Amendment to the Constitution approved limiting United States Presidents to two terms in office; the hydrogen bomb was tested; Hearst, the flamboyant news tycoon, died at the age of 88; also at age 77, Winston Churchill returned to power in Great Britain; Academy award winners— best pictures, "An American in Paris," "A Streetcar Named Desire," and "The African Queen;" best actress was Vivian Leigh and best actor was Humphrey Bogart. Let's talk a little bit about prices: postage stamps—three cents; one pound loaf of bread-16 cents; quart of milk 25 cents; gallon of gas-27 cents; you could buy a new car for $2,330; minimum wage was 75 cents per hour; and the average income was $3,709. My, how things have changed! But do you think those were the good old days as you hear some of the old timers talk about or would you just want to live in the present conditions of life as they are today? All things in life are meant for something, but sometimes we cannot understand why they happen. To keep this world turning and keep our lives going, we have to keep doing the things today that need to be done because we cannot undo the past and the future is not guaranteed. So we need to do the best we can every day and hope it is enough. What we do today will be remembered in the future.
Meeting Reminder Lodge meetings are the third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Koffee Kup Restaurant in Hico, Texas. Members are urged to attend and anyone belonging to other lodges in driving distance are welcome. Bring a guest and maybe we can make a member out of them. See you in the funny paper. Norman M. Christi Circle of Women reports on March meeting Corpus
The meeting of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women was called to order by Vice President Helen Kasparek Thursday, March 1. In attendance were 25 regular members, two honorary members and three guests. Joe Nemecek, Myles Marek and Clara Valla. Clara is visiting her sister, Donna Havranak, having moved back to Nebraska a little over a year ago. We were happy to see her again. We were also glad to have Frances McDonald present. A member for several years, Frances was unable to
attend our meetings because of her career. She was finally able to take full retirement and we look forward to seeing her every month. After the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of "My Country 'tis of Thee", a moment of silence was observed in memory of Mary Ann Rozypal Elzner. It is hard to believe Mary is no longer with us, although she will always be in our hearts and thoughts. She was one of our most active regular members and such a pleasure to be around. Mary passed away February 23, 2001 in a Corpus Christi Hospital after a short illness. More than 15 Krouzek members attended the funeral mass at Holy Family Church in Taft the Monday before our meeting. Mary was a parishioner and Eucharist Minister of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Taft. She was also a member of the Altar Society, Sokol Corpus Christ, KJZT and Cotton Wives Club. Mary is survived by one sister, our Krouzek member, Marcellina Mokry; two sons, Robert and John Elzner; and two daughters, Elizabeth Bush and Eileen Douglass; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mary must have told her daughter, Eileen, how much she enjoyed our monthly meetings because Eileen sent us a donation in memory of her mother. We also received donations in Mary's memory from Agnes Elzner Burge, Diane McRae, Larry Elzner, Jerry Elzner, Marsha Elzner McDougal, Becky Elzner Jackson, Dorothy McCoy, Norma Baker, Lil Hruska, Donna Havranek, Dolores Pollock, Margaret Kolodziej, Marion Peterek, Ella Simcik, Helen Sacky, Anna Marie Moss, Helen and Clem Kasparek and Myles and Clarice Marek A special donation was received from Peggy Elzner Janota in memory of her beloved aunts, deceased members, Mary Ann Rozypal Elzner, Lottie Elzner Ramey and Annie Elzner Spencer in honor of her aunts, present members, Della Simcik Elzner, Agnes Elzner Burge and Milly Florek Elzner.
Expression of Thanks I know I am not alone in my gratitude for having our Circle of Women; to Sokol for allowing us to meet monthly for the past nine and one half years; to SPJST Vestnik for printing our monthly reports for our relatives and friends all over Texas and beyond to read. We have had the opportunity to meet and know so many fine ladies who would have been mere acquaintances otherwise and Mary was one of the finest. For the opportunity to get to know her well, I am truly grateful. Jerry Elzner announced that he, Milly and Della Elzner will be leaving for the Czech Republic towards the end of March. They will be gone on April 5, the day of our next meeting, but promises to call us at 11 a.m. with greetings from the Czech Republic. I am sure we will all be receiving post cards. Plans were discussed for our April meeting and since Easter is on its way, each member is asked to bring six large decorated and filled plastic eggs to be distributed at Sunnybrook Nursing Home. We will need at least 150. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Helen Kasparek and Marion Peterek and best wishes are sent to Patsy Dziadek and Velma Malchar.
Once again Judy Majek sent us six African violets for door prizes. The plants were large, three of them blue ribbon winners. One had red blooms, something I had never seen before. The lucky winners received some beautiful plants. Helen Pavelka brought two nice sized bags of fresh picked beets, ready for pickling. All winners went home happy. Thanks to Fr. George Harris no one had to leave empty-handed. He sent 26 pints of homemade sauerkraut for anyone wanting a jar. There were no leftovers. Thank you, Judy and Fr. George for your continued support.

We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of L , reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the So ciety together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal.
