Fraternalists invited to"Join Hands" and "Make a Difference Time, life and love are precious gifts. Fraternalism is a spiritual bond that borrows from each of these and, in return, yields goodwill and service to others. SPJST are members encouraged to join with their brothers and sisters across the country and participate in one — or both — national days o:' doin g good in the year 2001.

teer day designed to build relationships between youth and adults while they are engaged in neighborhood service. More than 50,000 people representing more than 200 nonprofit groups, community agencies and corporations participated in the first Join Hands Day held on June 17, 2000. "The focus of the day — developing youth and adult partnerships throudi neighborhood volunteering — is very important. When the reports came in, we were pleasantly surprised to see how creative project leaders were in bringing different generations together," said Join Hands Day President John Dutton. Past directors "doing what comes naturally" PART II (Editor's Note: Thanks to Sister Effie Rosene, Chairman and President of the Czech Cultural Center, Houston, who contributed extensively to this article.) Louis Hanus: A Man of Principle "Louis is one of the hardest working and enthusiastic fraternalists I have ever known," says Legal Advisor Sidney Kacir. "His efforts on behalf of the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum will help to ensure that our generation builds a lasting tribute to the pioneer fathers and mothers who are the backbone of the SPJST." Brother Hanus came by his service to others naturally. Leading by example, his parents instilled in him that service to others was an expected thing. Many times Louis's mother would chastise his father for giving his last dollar to someone in need. Perhaps the most defining characteristic passed along to him by his parents was an appreciation for the language, history and traditions of the Czech people. That — and an appreciation for the American ideas and ideals of democracy and freedom. And, that with hard word and dedication, great things were possible. One instrument for accomplishing this was participation in Czech organizations such as the SPJST and Sokol. To say that Louis grew up in the SPJST would be an understatement. He has been a member for 72 years and quite literally grew up in the shadow of Lodge 88, Houston's first home on Robbie Street. In that time, his work in the lodge and the .SPJST has touched many lives and been an inspiration to others. An Inspiring Visit Others, too, have have inspired Brother Hanus, including Dr. Henry R. Maresh — author of "The Czech Pioneers of the Southwest." Dr. Maresh was the attending physician to all the Czech families in Louis's neighborhood. He treated Brother (Continued on page 4.)

Louis Hanus (Continued from page 1.) Hanus for a neural condition that caused three years of paralysis in both aims. During that time Louis could not move his arms and was so impaired that he could not work,. During one of his visits with Dr. Maresh, the doctor started to tell Louis about a recent medical meeting that he had attended. This made Louis impatient. He could not understand why the good doctor wanted to tell him about a meeting that had nothing to do with his paralysis. Finally, Dr. Maresh explained that the meeting had been with the great Helen Keller — who was not only blind, but deaf and mute. Dr. Maresh told Louis that his condition — paled in comparison to that of Ms. Keller. Even so, she was able to overcome her obstacles and achieve great things. This visit inspired Brother Hanus to continue the therapy which would eventually restore life to his arms. At such a point when his condition had bettered that he could raise his arms and move his hand, Dr. Maresh advised Brother Hanus to enlist in the Army. When the army doctors asked the recruits to raise their arms and wiggle their fingers, Louis raised them and just wiggled his whole hands. He was accepted, rose to the rank of master sergeant, was recommended for officer's candidate school and commissioned as a Lieutenant. A second tour was unexpected when in 1953 he was recalled for the Korean War, this time ending his tour as a Captain.

"Louis is a wonderful person — very dedicated and giving. I'm sure that goes back to his parents," she says. "They were very supportive and giving fraternalists." Brother Hanus' father and mother, Alois and Rosa Kuska Hanus from Prague immigrated to Houston in 1908. Their two offspring, Louis and Rosa Lee Hanus Kostom, were both born in Houston. Louis began a career with Schotts Bakery that eventually encompassed some 45 years. He worked virtually every position and retired as Office Manager and Purchasing Agent. Louis' father, Alois, initiated the Sokol movement in Houston in 1926 and served as Lodge 88 president. Louis became active and developed an interest in lodge work from the early age of ten. He was the first son of a lodge president to also become president. Indeed, Brother Hanus served six terms as President of Lodge 88, Houston in 1961, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1975 and 1976. During that time, according to Sister Hegwood, Louis has been a driving force behind many progressive changes for the lodge including Thursday night bingo. In fact, during the first 13 years he did not miss a single Thursday night. He finally missed a nigh in 1979 because of an out of town obligations as SPJST District Five Director.

"Louis is a wonderful person very dedicated and giving. I'm sure that goes back to his parents."

Lifelong Devotion Lodge 88, Houston President Helen Hegwood has known Brother Hanus her whole life. She is quick to acknowledge Brother Hanus and his special devotion to the lodge, its members and the SPJST.

Number One Camper District Five Youth Counselor Marie Stayton echoes these sentiments. "Brother Hanus has been an inspiration to the kids," she says. "For so many years -- during all our District Five camp outings, he has been there . . . We call him our –Number One,' camper!" Hearing that makes Brother Hanus laugh. "Oh the stories I could tell you about what went on at camp!" he says. Then he proceeds to give the details of waking up one morning and slipping on his shoes — only to find (Continued on page 6.)

Our Readers

Reader comments on new SPJST logo Dear Mr. Vanicek, I noticed that the Vestnik has a new masthead figure on the March 7 edition. It replaced the SPJST disk marker which has been with us a long time. Is this to be a permanent change? If so, why? This new emblem, I'll call it a "Co Je Tu," ("What Is It?) has been appearing in the paper lately. What does it mean? What does the star, the bars and the leafy sprig* represent? I like the old emblem better for the masthead. John M. Kosut Treasurer, Men's Club SPJST Lodge 88, Houston * I hope this sprig is a branch from the lipa tree. Editor's Reply: Thank you, Brother Kosut, for your inquiry. Others have raised some of the same questions. I'll do my best to answer them. As you noted, the old logo has with us for a long time. It has remained relatively unchanged since 1933. It was in that year that the two leaf branches were added to either side of the five-pointed star. The branches to the left were meant to depict lillies; the branches to the right were meant to depict an oak leaf branch. Prior to 1933, the five-pointed star was surrounded on the left by a cotton stalk and on the right by a corn stalk — the two principal cash crops grown in Texas at the time. The new logo, which appears on the masthead of the Vestnik, was approved by the SPJST Supreme Lodge in December 2000. This action stems from a vote taken in the January 2000 Supreme Lodge meet-

ing. Generally stated, some Supreme Lodge members expressed concern that the old logo did not make it clear which letter — "S," "P," "J," "S," or "T" — came first. That, and they were looking for a more contemporary look. Their decision to act on the matter was recorded in the minutes of the meeting which appeared in the February 16, 2000 Vestnik: "There was a discussion about updating the logo and several suggestions were presented to the Board. President Leshikar moved, seconded by Director Victorick to have professional help to design a logo with a budget of up to $5,000 . . . Motion passed." The new SPJST logo was developed by a Temple-area design agency and introduced — in color—in the Vestnik on January 10, 2001. With it's debut, the Vestnik reported that pre-existing signage, pins and documentation which display the old logo and reflect the Society's colorful past would continue to identify the SPJST in the communities that it seeks to serve. When the Publication Committee met at the SPJST Home Office on March 3, the new logo was discussed and the decision made to incorporate the image in the masthead of the Vestnik. Recognizing that the old logo remains the key identifying mark of the SPJST in many lodges and communities, it was also decided to include the old logo in the masthead for the foreseeable future. Without question, the old SPJST logo -- like the one which preceded it — remains an endearing symbol of our Society and its service to our faithful members. In time, perhaps, the new logo may too achieve its place in the hearts and minds of SPJST members. —SPJST-

Lodge 88, Houston First Vice President Marie Slayton presents Brother Hanus with a plaque in February, acknowledging his lifelong commitment to the lodge. In March, Brother Hanus was cited at the District Five Spring meeting for his contributions to the district and steadfast support of the youth program.

Louis Hanus (Continued from page 4.)

that while he slept, mischievous campers had filled them with peanut butter." "Oh, that was a mess that was," he says. "But you know, that was all a part of the game. It was all part of the fun." Brother Hanus' dedication to fraternalism through the years has meant that he was always there when the SPJST and the Czech heritage were involved. His activities with other groups include the Rotary Club and he has spent a number of years working with development and funding for the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. Dedication and commitment are his character. His untiring volunteerism is admirable and has been supported throughout by his wife of 46 years, Oleta. Demonstrated Commitment Following the decision by delegates to the Twenty-Eighth SPJST Convention in 2000 to approve the establishment of the non-profit SPJST Library, Archives and Museum, delegates received a surprise announcement from retiring District Five Director Hanus. Brother Hanus presented SPJST LAM President Glenn

Kaminsky with a personal check for $100,000 to apply towards the project. The check was presented in honor of Brother Hanus' mother and father. "Let me thank each of you personally and fraternally," said Brother Hanus in making the presentation. "Your vote has assured me that the history and culture of the Czech people will pass on to future generations . . . I thank God that my wife and I are able to make this contribution." "Mr. Hanus' commitment to the Czech culture has been an inspiration to others," acknowledges Effie Rosene, President and Chairman of the Czech Cultural Center Houston. Brother Hanus serves an Honorary Board Member of the CCCH. "His wise counsel and guidance has always been appreciated and his enthusiasm for his work has been contagious!" It's a Good Feeling Knowing that he has been able to make a positive contribution gives Brother Hanus a good feeling. "Well, it's like this," he says. "God puts us here to help others. And you know, if you've been fortunate, during the course of your life you acquire all of these material possessions — but you know, you can't take them with you. It's a wonderful feeling knowing that you've been able to help someone and make a positive difference." —SPJST-

They especially enjoyed dancing to two popular orchestras: Bobby Lane on Friday night and Manny Green on Saturday and Sunday nights. Both orchestras are favorites at the Chandelier Ballroom. Willie Mae and Hilbert Pechacek enjoyed their first wedding anniversary at Las Vega.s. How nice it is that both are active in our lodge! Ernie Anders had both of his feet operated on and is doing fine, of course, having a wonderful nurse—Margie! It's good news from the Kosuts: Mary is doing fine! Keep that up, Mary; we have missed you. Our efficient Youth Leader Barbara Gonzales announces that the Easter egg hunt and party will be on Saturday, April 7. Plan to bring your children and grandchildren (grown-ups enjoy it, too) for some real fun! Members were sorry to hear that Victor Krutilek died and extend sympathy to his wife of 60 years, Lorraine Krutilek and family and also to Margaret Arnold, wife of 47 years of Robert Arnold who died. Our sympathy also goes to the families of Lillian Palmer, Bobby Jane Hammer and Louise Matela and their families. Another good dance is on March 2/1 Johnny Dyson, Big Band. You all come! Marie Matcek will decide on the students who will receive the scholarships. The students should apply at their high schools. This applies to any high school in Wharton County. A fund raiser project for the scholarships was discussed and will be held in the near future. A discussion was held whether to have a benefit fund raiser for the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in LaGrange, Texas as the Wharton County Chapter held last year. Dan Marek, a board of director of the museum, urged all members to send,a donation and become a member of this $17,000,000 cultural center project. Individual membership is $35 and family membership is $50. Mr. Marek has envelopes, brochures and information. Building has begun on the cultural center. Plans are for a library, archives, exhibit halls, auditorium, gift shop/bookstore, 20th century village, a dance hall, covered outdoor pavilion and many other features. A new book authored by Leo Baca, "Passenger List 9," is now available and for sale. The chapter voted to give the Wharton County Library a copy of the book. It will also be available at the Texas Czech Heritage state meeting Saturday, March 10 in Rosenberg, Texas. Richard Chomout, Program Chairman, presented a very informative program on genealogy and how to preserve your Czech heritage. Each member received an outline and steps on how to begin your research. He urged all members to begin writing information about your own family and, also, to talk to your grandparents and other relatives about their histories. The next Wharton County Czech Heritage Society meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 5. The meeting adjourned and refreshments were served. Ethel Kuzell Meek, Reporter 3508 N.
