Looking to Make a Difference? In last week's Vestnik, we presented profiles of two "national days of doing good" — Join Hands Day on June 17 and Make a Difference Day on October 27. If your lodge and/or youth club is interested in getting involved in one — or both -of these projects and are looking for a worthy group to partner with, please consider the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum. The SPJST LAM achieved status last year as a non-profit organization and is thereby able to accept your taxdeductible gifts. And, in the case of Make a Difference Day projects, if you want to be considered for one of the Wal-Mart cash grants, it will be necessary for you to channel your efforts in support of a non-profit organization. The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum has tremendous potential for growth and development. To find out
more about the LAM and how you or your lodge can get involved in supporting the project, please contact LAM President Glenn Kaminsky at (409) 335-4461. Just a Reminder Communication works best when it's a two-way street. Take advantage of the Vestnik and use it as a tool to communicate news and events taking place at your local lodge. Please note that the deadline for lodge reports and timely news items is one week prior to the publication date of the issue. We also accept feature items — especially member-related items — and publish them as space permits. If you ever have a question, please give us a call at 1 (800) 727-7578 or via Email at bvanicek@vvm.com . Thank you.

Fraternal coalition seeking legislative relief from property taxes for lodges Deal Members: In regards to our property tax relief for lodges we want to bring you up to date on what has occurred. Representative Warren Chisum from Pampa has taken the initiative in the Texas House on promoting this bill, HB 1689. Also a Fraternal Coalition has been formed in the state, which includes the following: SPJST, KJT, Texas Elks State Association, Knights of Columbus, Sons of Hermann, Prince Hall Grand Lodge, Texas Moose Association, Masonic Grand Lodge and Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The Coalition has met a number of times to coordinate the different events. Also, we have visited a large number of our State Representatives to let them know that we are seeking their support. On March 21, a hearing was held on HB 1689 and three members of the Coalition, including myself, testified in favor. The House Ways and Means Committee in their customary procedure postponed the vote on the bill for one week. However, the Chairman, Representative Rene' Oliveira, stated that he is in favor of the bill and will promote the bill in the House. This makes it very favorable for us in the House Chamber. Our next challenge will be in the Texas Senate. As we proceed, we will keep you updated on the events. Listed below are the members on the House Ways and Means Committee and their phone numbers. If any of the Representatives are in your District

LIBRARY, ARCHIVES AND MUSEUM
SPJST Library, Archives and Museum presents footnotes in Czech history Vitame Vas! Greetings from the SPJST Museum! It is good to be able to sit down and relax for a while and say hello to each of you — members and friends — through this report. It is hard to believe that we are almost one-fourth of the way through the new year. It seems just like yesterday I was wishing each of you a Stastny Novy Rok! Time has a way of getting away from you when you are busy, and of course, having fun in the process! When I wrote in December, I shared some interesting facts that were found on the Internet about American Czechs. As I said then, I would like to share some more of those items of interest with you now: 1857 - A Czech cultural organization called Slovanska lipa (Slavic Linden) was founded in Detroit. It was modeled on a patriotic association of the same name that had been established in Prague in the revolutionary year 1848. Cleveland was followed by other cities. Soon every larger Czech settlement had its own Slovanska lipa, a cultural center which also performed important social functions.
posouzeni udalosti a pokroku XIX. stoleti (The Truth, or An Open Discussion of Events and Progress in the Nineteenth Century), written by Karel Prochazka.
1859 - Anthony Dignowity published Bohemia under Austrian Despotism, the first English-language work about the situation of the Czechs in Austria, written and published in America.
In the future, I will be sharing some more facts about the early Czechs in America. I hope you are enjoying reading these "tidbits" of information as well learning a little more about the history of the Czech people in our country. In the months of August, September, and October, a total of 299 visitors toured the museum. This included a group of third graders from St. Mary's Catholic School of Temple, first and second graders from Clear Creek Elementary of Fort Hood, third, fourth, and fifth graders from Nolanville Elementary School, and a group from the Temple Meridian Retirement Community. Many thanks to all of you who came; we hope to see you again in the future! The Mini-Museum traveled to the Kolache Festival in Caldwell in September; and to Cyclone, Lodge 24, and Seaton, Lodge 47 for Czech Heritage Day in October. It is always a pleasure to represent your museum at all of these fine places; thank you for the invitation! And now, I would like to invite each and every one of you to come by the Home Office and enjoy a tour downstairs in the museum. We are here to serve you. We appreciate your visits and look forward to assisting you and yours! Fraternally, Dorothy Pechal, Museum Curator
1860 - The first Czech newspaper, Slowan Amerikansky, published by Frantisek Korizek, appeared in Racine, Wisconsin. It was a semi-monthly, then a weekly, with 450 subscribers. In the same year, another Czech weekly, Narodni noviny, was launched by the Czech immigrants in St. Louis. 1862 - The Czechs of Chicago established their first Czech school; they also had the first Czech lawyer, K. Kolacnik. 1863 - Charles Jonas (Karel Jonas) was a 23-year old political émigré when he arrived in Racine, Wisconsin to take over the editorship of Slavie. He began publishing dictionaries, handbooks, and guides for the Czech immigrants. During the Franco-Prussian war, 18701871, he was an American war correspondent in Germany and France. In 1885 he was appointed the U.S. consul in Prague. In 1890 he was elected the lieutenant-governor of Wisconsin. He became the U.S. consul in St. Petersburg and in Crefeld, Germany, 1894. For his important role in the Czech community and in American public life, he was sometimes referred to as 'the first Czech in America'. 1865 - The first Czech book on record in America was published in Racine, Wisconsin: Pravda cili volne
1866 - The first Czech workmen's club was founded in Chicago. Similar clubs followed in Cleveland (1869) and New York (1870).

1868 - Czech women in Chicago founded the first organization of their own, called Libuse. 1868 - 1870 - Josef V. Sladek, one of the major Czech poets of the 19th century, visited the United States. He wrote for Czech-American newspapers and developed a strong interest in American and English literature. Among other authors, he translated Shakespeare, Longfellow, Byron, Burns, and Coleridge into Czech.

Brother Bob Bayer gave an interesting presentation on the Mission 2100 how the lodges, officers and members can profit by participating for awards by bringing in new members to achieve the goods. Members, you can help. We have campaign cards—just ask any officer or sales reps for the cards. Sister Karen Kaspar said that Brother Bayer had covered a lot of what she was going to say. She encouraged the sales reps to write new members and read a list of names of sales reps, Jerry Sijansky, Helen Pavelka and Jerry Elzner. We do need more sales reps. There was one new application for March, another policy for Kyle R. Sijansky who is a member. The March $50 donation was approved to be given to the "No Bake—Bake Sale" fund raiser and that the proceeds will be divided by four organizations. While Vice President Anna M. Moss took over the presiding chair, Brother Jerry Sijansky talked about the lodge paying for work on the vent hood on the stove in the kitchen and that it needs to be brought up to code. This includes putting in a light which is needed. The estimated cost of all the work is about $1,700 to $1,800. The last letter I wrote was the day after the District Five Spring Meeting and after I talked with our District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and mailed it the same day (on March 5), but it didn't get there in time. So that is why the letter had about our St. Patrick's dance a week after the dance! I surely enjoyed reading the article about past District Six Director Matt Vanek. To me, it proved how much a member can accomplish for our SPJST! I congratulate Brother Vanek and also Editor Brian Vanicek who wrote it up so beautifully! Since I am in a congratulatory mood, I want to congratulate my home — Weimar Lodge 8 -- on the way they activated their lodge and especially JoAnn Jares who won the prize for the earned premium in her district. At our very nice Workers' Party, it was especially nice to see Josephine Buri, Bessie Dewer and Lillie Spies who had been on our "Get Well" list. We want to extend special wishes to Ed Zientek, who had a four-way by-pass and to Gladys Haveman, Adella Kite, Leland Hensley and Nat Gonzales. We missed you at the party. Thanks to Laura Warnasch for having the air-conditioning adjusted at the party. Laura and Royal Warnasch have been active members of our lodge for years. they have had some times when they couldn't be at the lodge, and we were happy to see them at the party. Another couple we were so happy to see was Estelle and Steve Kelly who also have been active so many years! I was so happy to see our District Five Queen Natalie Zalesky, daughter of Miriam and Gary Zalesky — all very active in our lodge for years. Her grandparents, Elsie and the late, A.J. Zalesky, were so very active for many years. Some good dances in April for you to enjoy:

"Little Mary" When Little Mary went to heaven, God said, "Give me all your sins." She said, "Now wait just a minute, Maybe I put them with my pins."
Wednesday, March 28, 2001--VESTNIK/9
The angels searched her sewing basket, But they couldn't find them there. She said, "Let me think a minute, Maybe I left them in my chair" So they looked beneath the cushion, But they only found it bare. And they looked beneath the rollers, But they still found nothing there. God looked a little puzzled, "Give the sins up! Give them all!" And Little Mary answered, "Maybe I left them at the hall." The angels searched the Sokol, Checking every pot and pan. When their search proved unproductive, "Take some notes to give the Man!" "We have looked the whole place over, And her mission here is done. We report on Little Mary, About her sins, we can find none!" God turned to Little Mary, Well, the search, it turned out flat!" And Little Mary, grinned at Him, "I could have told you that!" God said, "Since thou has been so good, I grant thee wishes three. So take a moment of thy time. What will thy wishes be?" "The first thing that I wish for Is for Bill to be with me. And with his help we'll gather up, Our precious family." Together we shall build a hall, "Up here in heaven's blue. To teach the Sokol Spirit, To the angels and to You!" "Daddy will play the tuba, With the trumpets for the band. To teach the angels prostna, With every woman and every man." "With mother sitting by my side, The grandest slet they've seen. Angels in gymnastics? Think about them on the rings! " "My second wish is for the ones, I left behind to stay. To carry on the burning Spirit, Of our Sokol way!" "I pass my torch to thee, my kin, To carry on for me. A torch I carried to the end, When my legs would not carry me." "I beseech thee from my heart, my soul, Do not let the Spirit die! Rekindle your dedication, And let the Spirit rise!" "My third wish is to place my star Half way for all to see. Between my house and Sokol Hall, And present, I shall be." "So when things are not going well, And life gets a little scarry, Look up and find my special star, And talk to "Little Mary"! "There is something I must tell You," Little Mary said to Him. "I guess that going to heaven, Is almost as good as going to the gym." "But I have a little secret, She told him with a grin. I was a little worried, When I arrived upon the wind." "As I quickly looked around me, For the game I love so well. With no 42 dominoes rattling, I was afraid I'd gone to hell!"
God let out a great big laugh, And gave her one more wish. He told an angel to go get his dominoes, From His golden dish. Then God sat down with Little Mary, And Donnie and Joe make four ' She said, "It's my turn God! And I'm bidding 84!" By the way, God, do you have any insurance? I just happen to be a sales representative for SPJST, Lodge 154. And Jerry Milan added, "What Sharron forgot to tell you is that God raised her three marks!" However I am sure Little Mary still tried to figure out how to set Him! Nazdar! Nazdar! Nazdar! Little Mary! We will miss you. Sharron Connelly —SPJST-

The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to March celebrants of Harold Balvin, Carrie Milan and Anna Marie Moncrief. May you all have many more. Annie Whitsell reminded everyone that the April meeting has been designated the month for our bake sale. Ladies, start planning your specialty. I am hoping to buy a poppy seed cake. Reckon someone will take my hint. Annie further stated April is the scheduled month to bring food items for St. Thomas Food Bank and also is the month for our Little Gift Exchange — lots to remember for April! President Alice distributed copies of the updated Guidelines for the Club. She also reminded Irene Green, Pat McWilliams and Pauline Walker that they are scheduled to be hostesses in April. Lydia and Roy Alholm are real proud of their grandson, Daniel Alholm, who made the Dean's List during his first semester at the John Marshall Law School in Chicago. To qualify for the fall list, a student's semester GPA must be ranked in the upper 25 percent of his class. Congratulations, Daniel! Rose Romeo is equally proud of her grandson as he as a 3.8 GPA at the University of Texas. Rose also invited everyone to the Saginaw Quilt Show at the Saginaw Senior Citizens. Prizes will be given to the best quilts. I failed to ask Rose if she was entering a quilt. Rose also reported on visiting Lena Norma who is still in the hospital. Lena asked for our prayers. Louise Oujesky fell recently, but apparently was feeling much better as she made a trip to Marksville to do a little gambling. I hear that she won $80 on the nickel slot machine. Good for you! Tommie Dillard had cataract surgery. We missed you at the meeting and hope to see you in April. Pauline Cox is also having some problems so hope you are much improved by now. Nettie Naugle is looking forward to becoming a great-grandmother for the first time. Nettie, if you need any advice on being a great-grandmother, just ask Bessie Brezina as she is most experienced! Carrie Milan was surprised with a dinner celebration at the Spaghetti Warehouse at the Stockyards in honor of her 80th birthday. About 75 family members and friends joined in on the party and a good time was had by all. Roy Alholm celebrated his birthday with a Sunday luncheon outing compliments of his son, R.L. Of course, Lydia was included, but Frances Matthews and I were also lucky to have been invited. We ate at Ryan's Steak House and did we ever eat. Our tummies were happy when we left. Anna Johnson has not been feeling well and has some problems in walking, but bless her heart, she just keeps right on going, pain or no pain. Get well soon, Anna. Our March hostesses were Harold Balvin, Bessie Brezina and Annie Whitsell. They did a great job. Too bad, Harold had to work on his birthday month, but being the good sport he is, it

12/VESTNHC—Wednesday, March 28, 2001 Seaton, Academy and Bruceville-Eddy. Door prizes were awarded and everyone walked out a winner. I'm very sad that my camera went on the blink and I have no pictures for our February activities. If you have pictures, please send them in. Our lock-in which was scheduled for last November and was postponed due to the weather, was held on February 24 at Lodge 47, Seaton. We thank the officers and members of Lodge 47 for the use of Star Hall. Once again, we had good participation. Thank you to all the youth who attended and also to those of you who brought friends. I do know we have at least one guest who is in the process of becoming an SPJST member. We had a great time . . . movies, relays, games, a scavenger hunt, basketball, cookie decorating contest, door prizes, food and, of course, lack of sleep. Thank you to our chaperones who stayed awake all night—Ruby Bowen (Elgin), Patsy Baker (Cyclone), Carol Tallas (Taylor), Heidi Bartek, David Nicholson (Seaton), Janet Lyon (Academy), and Trish Mathis (Bruceville). A special thanks to Seaton Youth Leader Heidi Bartek for all the help and preparation. A special thanks to Willie and Adeline Kohutek for the basketball goal. The weather was nice enough to be outside for a while and it was really enjoyed. We enjoyed having David from camp

Congratulations to Jessica Lyon (Academy) whose tee-shirt drawing entry won overall. We'll look forward to wearing Jessica's talent on our teeshirts this summer. Congratulations to all of you who entered. Youth leaders will meet on April 21, 2001 for our district training. Please give your suggestions and ideas and concerns to your youth leader so they can be discussed. Let's make 2001 and Mission 2100 the best ever! See ya soon!
