Friepds From Way Back About a week ago, I was visiting with our friends at RVOS headquarters in Temple and received a kind invitation to extend to SPJST members through the Vestnik. We're all invited to a party! RVOS - the Farmers Mutual Protective Association of Texas --observes its 100th anniversary with a grand celebration on May 4 and 5 at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton, Texas. Founded in 1901 as Rolnicky Vzajemne Ochranny Spolek, RVOS was
Here's what they've got planned. On May 4, a golf tournament will be held at Mill Creek Golf Club in Salado. On May 5, at the Expo Center, a barbecue cookoff, car show, domino tournament, horseshoe tournament, tarok tournament, member craft and business show and karaoke contest will be held. Entertainment will be provide by the Dallas Czech Singers, Vrazels Polka Band, Jerry Burkhart (country), Rockin' Rick and the Corvettes ('50s and '60s Rock and Roll), and country music headliner Dan Seals. While there are entry fees for some of the tournaments, most of the entertainment is free. Canned food donations will be accepted and donated to an area food bank. For more information on activities and entertainment, including times, please contact the RVOS Home Office in Temple at (800) 792-3084.

organized near the community of Ocker in east Bell County on the basis of providing property insurance for its members. Over the years, many SPJST and RVOS members have shared close cultural ties and personal relationships. Indeed, many SPJST sales representatives also sell for RVOS. Too, it's not unusual to find RVOS lodges meeting at SPJST halls or even co-hosting various seasonal activities.

SPJST records 371 applications through March in Mission 2100 program Through the end of March 2001, the SPJST had received applications for 371 insurance certificates. Over the same period, a total of 291 insurance certificates were issued. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2001. In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.
The fourth column,"Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota. An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through March 31, 2001. —SPJST--

Czech Easter traditions and customs remembered Hello again from the SPJST Museum. One of the best things I like about my job is to sit down for a while to chat with the members through these letters. It is always a pleasure to report to you on at least a few of the things that are happening here in your museum. We appreciate all of you through your visits, calls and donations to the museum and our wish is to serve you in the best way we can. I would like to acknowledge the donations that we received in October from Mr. Louis Lanus of Houston: 35 Czech books, 317 Czech play books, and 34 English language play books. (My apologies for not reporting this in the last report.) Also, in January, Mr. Hanus donated, along with Lodge 88, Houston, 10 Czech books, one English language book, 293 Czech play books, and 134 English language play books. In addition, Mr. Hanus donated a display of newspaper articles from The Houston Press of June 1953 about the "High Noon Bandit." Thanks to each and everyone of you for remembering the SPJST Museum through your donations. In the months of November, December, and January, 571 visitors toured the museum. This included a group of third graders from Zion Lutheran School of Walburg, second graders from Willow Springs Elementary School and Trimmier Elementary School in Killeen, and first and second graders from Marlboro Elementary School in Killeen. This total also includes the many visitors who toured during our Christmas Open House Night. Also touring were visitors from Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Wisconsin, Columbia, the Czech Republic, Germany, and Scandinavia. The Traveling Mini-Museum took a trip to Joe Pirtle Elementary School in Belton and Hector Garcia Elementary School in Temple where I also had the privilege of talking to some of the students for two days.
Easter Traditions and Customs
Since we are very close to Easter, I thought it would be interesting to find some information about Easter traditions and customs associated with the Czech people now and in the past. Many traditions are still observed and practiced in the Czech Republic, and different regions may have their own traditions and customs. The next section describes some Easter customs from the region of Northern Moravia: Before Easter Sunday, children finish school on

Ugly Wednesday, which is a good idea because they need to spend some serious time on making Easter what it should be. In the evening of
Green Thursday,
all the boys from the village equip themselves with a wooden rattle or rehtacka. They form a group and walk through the village, rattling their rattles vigorously so the noise can be heard from afar. The meaning of the rattling may be to chase away Judas. The same procedure repeats on Good Friday. The last rattling day is White Saturday, when the boys not only walk through the village, but stop at every house in the morning and rattle until they are given money which they then split between themselves.
The Symbol of New Life
The symbol of Easter is the egg, as it is a symbol of spring and new life, along with other Easter mascots like baby hare, lamb, or chicken. It is a tradition to bake a lamb at Easter, which is *a rather cruel custom. Real lamb is often replaced by baked gingerbread lamb. Easter Sunday is a day of preparations for Easter Monday. Girls paint, color, and decorate eggs, if they have not done so before, and boys prepare their Easter whips. The whip or pomlazka is used by boys who go caroling on Easter Monday and whip girls on the legs. This may sound scary, but it is fun. Do not imagine a whip that is used on horses. The Easter whip is made from (Continued on page 12.)

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on Easter meeting and party Hi! Did you folks miss my reports? After illness and hospital stays, let's see if I can still master this. It was nice to be able and get out for a change and enjoy going to our Easter meeting and party. Brother Johnnie Krizan, President, called the meeting to order at 3 p.m. Whitney Dobecka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, with Tracie Dobecka reciting our motto. A moment of silence was had for all departed members, especially Jessica Cleghorn. Our condolences to her family. Our Flag Bearer, Sister Georgia Soukup, was called upon for report on attendance for our meeting. It was reported that we had 48 members and one guest present, Kim Seith. In noticing our attendance growing, I later looked and there were 58 people signed in counting another guest, Elenora Muehlstein. I do believe our attendance kept growing for our Easter party and meal, which we had a very good crowd. Thanks to all of you who came out to enjoy an Easter egg hunt and fried chicken meal. She also reported that the youth would present a small Easter program after our meeting, and that the youth were selling chances today as one of their fund raisers, with drawing today after our meal. Sister Peggy also reported that the youth club members would do the Memorial Service at the District Three Meeting held at our lodge on Sunday, April 22, and that election of youth officers would be held. Financial Secretary, Brother George Straten, had no report as he had not received anything from Home Office as yet. He did give calendar report, with our socials being on April 6 and April 20. Brother George went on to give the Trustee's Report from our Trustee's meeting on March 16 with 19 trustee's present. It was reported that books were in process of being audited and there were some completed with everything being in order. Brother George also reported new prices on several items in connection with our hall and lodge, which all were approved. Brother Straten also reported that our will be the host for the District Three Spring Meeting on Sunday, April 22, and that lots of volunteers would be needed to gets things set up as well as working in the kitchen with preparation of the meal. The meal will be fried chicken/sausage, potatoes, corn, green beans, and all the other trimmings. He ask that the ladies of the lodge please furnish desserts. It was reported that registration would be at 10 am. with meeting starting at 11 a.m. Brother George also thanked Lodge No. 6, Inc. for the keg and soda for today. He reported that the next trustee's meeting would be held on Friday, June 1 at 7:30 p.m. Our Sunshine Committee, Sister Hattie Kaska, reported sending get well cards to Sister Irene Schiemenz and Lindsey Neckar. We all hope they are feeling much better. Contribution Committee Meets Usually — around Easter time — the Contributions Committee meets and decides on the budget for the year. Brother Bobby Dobecka, being the head of this committee, gave a report. He mentioned the idea of doing a bit different this year in relation to a request by letter from the West Boys Scouts. They are in bad need of some camp and cooking equipment and a small cargo trailer. In keeping this idea, perhaps it might be feasible to consider a one-time donated amount towards this worthy cause. Usually we ask for the same funds from Lodge 6, as well as Lodge No. 6, Inc., which Brother Dobecka presented for 2001 not to exceed $1100. This amount of $1100 was seconded and approved by all members for SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood. Those in attendance today with April birthdays were Sisters Jerelene Lenart, Kristy Lenart, Marie Horak, Irene Peterson and Brother Bobby Dobecka. "Happy Birthday" to these folks and to all with a birthday this month. Winners and More Winners! After everyone enjoyed an Easter egg hunt, including the adults, we enjoyed a fried chicken/sausage meal with all the trimmings. Lots of good fellowship was had for the afternoon and evening. 142, Houston barbecue cookoff building momentum Lodge
SPJST Lodge 142 members and friends gathered for an exceptionally good time March 16 and 17. It was time for the Annual SPJST 142 Barbecue Cookoff! As the afternoon sun shone brightly through the sky on Friday, March 16, the teams arrived and set up for battle! There were 11 teams in all this year, which is an increase from last year. As the sun set on the evening, the Texas Drifters, hosted a party for the SPJST 142 family and friends. Music, cheers and laughter could be heard well into the night. Ruth Kieschnick and volunteer members kept the cold drinks flowing as the band kept getting hotter. The teams used this time to relax in preparation of the battle they would face for bragging rights the next day.

—SPJSTIn the early morning sun of Saturday, March 17, the teams hurriedly prepared for the first event—potato salad! All 11 teams entered the event, but they knew only one would take home the prize. At 11 a.m., the judges gathered around the table to lend their taste buds to the event. For the-Cookers, the wait had now begun. However, there wasn't much time to be wasted because pinto beans were the next in line and those points counted toward the overall Master Cook trophy.
Fun for All Joe Gamble, 87, and Mattie Perio, 1, share time together at Lodge 142, Houston's barbecue cook-off. High noon in the parking lot and a call rang out, "Turn in pinto beans!" Pinto beans! Pinto beans!" Teams scrambled to their entries to turn into the judges. Barbecue chicken was on the hot pit next. The stakes were higher with every event. Slowly, the minutes ran by. Then as fast as it arrived, the chicken was gone._ The judges called loud and clear for the teams' entries. For the cookers, this meant three down and two left to go. If you are a pork rib lover, your event was next and 2 p.m. was your time. Then at 3 p.m. the grand daddy of them all—brisket. All 11 teams put hours into this one piece of meat. When it all came down to it, 10 judges would decide on who had the best smoke ring, taste, texture and overall appearance. Hearts beat fast when that final call comes out! There is nothing more that can be done. For two hours, cookers speculated on how their entries stacked up against the competition. However, you would have never known bragging rights were on the line. Everyone involved was laughing and having a good time, including Brian Vanicek from the Home Office in Temple.

Easter Traditions (Continued from page 5.) osier twigs which are braided together. (Osier is any of the various willows whose pliable twigs are used for furniture and basketry.) The more twigs, the more difficult it is to braid a whip. Boys used to make their own whips in the past, but this tradition and skill is long gone and Easter whips can be bought in stores and on the streets. Some men do not even bother and use a single twig or even a kitchen spatula! Easter eggs or kraslice are painted by girls and women. There are many techniques to decorate Easter eggs and they usually require a certain level of skill. You can use bees wax, straw, watercolors, and picture stickers. A nationwide Easter egg contest is even held in Prague around Easter time. Easter Monday is a day off. Everybody gets up early, boys and men to set out on their whipping trip through the village; girls and women

to prepare, hide, or run away. Boys stop at people's homes and whip the legs of every girl and woman who lives in the house. They sometimes catch the girl still in bed. Little boys say an Easter carol while whipping, usually asking for an egg or two. A popular custom is to grab the girl and throw her in cold water or 'splash water on her. The whipping and splashing is supposed to chase away bad spirits and illness, so they are actually good for the girl! Anyway, all this is done for the fun of it. After all the whipping and splashing is done, the girl, strangely enough, rewards the boy by giving him one of her painted eggs (plus candies to small boys) and tying a ribbon around pomlazka. As the boys progress through the village, their bags fill up with eggs and the whips become nicer and nicer with the colorful ribbons fastened around them. (Source: http.//www.locallingo. com/countries/ czech_republic/culture/easter.html) There is also a most interesting story that was told to little Czech children at Easter. On Good Friday in
Czechoslovakia, the bells of every church were silent in honor of Christ's suffering on the cross. Since church bells were an important part of any town 's atmosphere, the children would naturally ask about their silence, their "absence.' They were told that on that day, Good Friday, an the bells had flown to Rome to be rejuvenated; they then flew back on Holy Saturday, ready to ring out noisily in honor of the Resurrection on Sunday morning This simple story was (and is) apparently as commonplace in Czechoslovakia as the complicated Santa Claus story is here in America (Source: http://www.panhitz.com/ Freuds XtnUnconJ074.html) Have a Happy Easter! In closing, I would like to wish everyone a Vesele a Pozehnany Velikonoce as you enjoy your own special way of observing this holiday. Fraternally, Dorothy Pechal, Museum Curator —SPJST-
