Mother Nature Takes Her Toll Allison's Aftermath Flooding caused by Tropical Storm Allison last week forced at least 35,000 Houston-area households to flee as nearly three feet of rain swamped parts of the city in less than a week. The storm has been blamed for at least 20 deaths in Texas and Louisiana and more than $1 billion in damage. Twenty-eight counties in southeast Texas have been declared disaster areas. In spite of this widespread devarea astation, SPJST lodge buildings weathered the storm quite well according to reports received from lodge officers. On the other hand, they report, many of our members were much less less fortunate. "I have never seen anything so pitiful in my life," states Lodge 88, Houston First Vice President Marie Stayton, who spent the week assisting fellow members in need. "Parts of the city - what were beautiful residential areas - are like a war zone," she says. "It tears you apart, seeing how some of our members have been devastated by this thing." As you can imagine, insurance adjusters from around the country have descended on Houston. According to an Associated Press report, an insurance industry estimate suggested there could be as many as 50,000 claims for property damage not covered by federal flood insur- ance and for losses to cars and trucks. "From our perspective, it's going to be an insurance nightmare," said Jerry Johns, president of Southwestern Insurance Information Service, an industry trade group. "And even if you're insured, it can't replace the lifetime of memories that were lost," says Sister Stayton. District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt, whose home also sustained considerable water damage, agrees. "In checking around, we're' finding that the losses to SPJST member households were far more .severe than first imagined. It's a real mess out there." Various federal and community disaster relief efforts remain underway in Houston says Brother
Pflughaupt. "What we have also been seeing," he observes, "are members helping their brothers and sisters more severely affected by the storm. These efforts are appreciated, very much needed and will continue to be appreciated. "For those most adversely affected, the most immediate need is housing - simply finding a place to stay," he says. "Other than that, people are experiencing a monumental task trying to salvage their properties and possessions. It's going to take time for everything to work its course."
"We have also been seeing members helping their brothers and sisters more severely affected by the storm."

Keep Up the Good Work Remember the May 9 issue when we spotlighted our spring graduates? Well, there are more! Congratulations to the young people profiled on pages five and six of this week's Vestnik. All of these young people have done their parents, grandparents and communities proud. With continued diligence and hard work, I am sure the future holds much success and happiness for these young men and women. Recruiter of the Month Congratulations to Insurance Department Administrative Assistant Doni Powell who was recognized as the SPJST Home Office "Recruiter of the Month" for May. Sister Powell generated 23 sales leads for the Insurance Department to forward to local lodge sales representatives. For Doni Powell her initiative, she receives a half-day of vacation and the "Recruiter of the Month" parking space at the SPJST Home Office. Home Office personnel generated a total of 83 sales leads in May. Doni has worked for the SPJST since September 2000. A member of Lodge 177, Academy, she and her husband, Wayne, have one son, Zacfiary. -SPJST-

88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge
I didn't plan to write this week but decided I wanted to mention District Youth Achievement Day once more. This great day for our fine youth is Sunday, July 1 at Lodge 196, Houston-West, 19810 Huffmeister Road, Cypress, Texas. Our youth, Lodge Youth Leader Barbara. Gonzales and District Youth Counselbr Marie Stayton will appreciate you being there. You will see how much our youth accomplish. Mary Roznovsky really enjoyed the Gorkas reunion at Lodge 81, Needville where they have held the reunion for 30 years on the first Sunday in June. They had a delicious catered dinner and many baked goods. They played games and best of all was seeing relatives! Since I have short items of interest, I'll use my numbers method: 1.) Louise Jacob is a great fratemalist the way she tries to cheer up someone ill with her visits. She misses her husband, the very likeable Kervin (Jake) Jacob, and we all miss him, too. 2.) It was good news to hear that our District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt is doing a great job—as we expected! 3.) When I wrote about my grandson, Brooks Krejci Eubank, graduating from Yale, I didn't know he was graduating "Magna Cum Laude" and received life membership in Phi Beta Kappa. 4.) Ann Urbanovsky is recuperating at home, and we all hope she is getting better every day.

8NESTNIK—Wednesday, June 20, 2001 5.) It was so good to see Betty and Gene Dobesh. They used to be active in our youth club when I was leader and so was Bobby Dobesh. 6.) Our Lodge Choral Club with Eugene Barcak as president, Helen Hegwood as director and Fred Buri as assistant director, and our Czech Concert Orchestra led by President Jim Rohde add much to our lodge. 7.) Marceil Malak is an efficient chairlady of our Audit Committee. 8.) Betty Theiss works hard as our Entertainment Chairlady. 9.) Our past president, Clara Broz, stays involved and is always smiling. Johnny Broz is a faithful worker — always busy! Their son, John Broz, is on the Board of Trustees.

If anyone is ever in Austin, be sure to visit the new Bob Bullock's Museum on Texas history. Rosie Steinman is in the video on Fort Worth history which is on the third floor. I recently had a very special weekend. On Saturday, I was confirmation sponsor to great nephew, Ben Kosarek, in Waco and on Sunday, I was sponsor to great niece, Jessica Kosarek in Arlington. Both of these young adults are very special to me. Following the meeting, Sister Patricia led us in saying grace and we all enjoyed a wonderful lunch. Following, games were played. Remember, the next meeting on the second Wednesday, July 11 at Ryans Steak House on Cherry Lane—no covered dish to bring, no little gift. Just come and enjoy fellowship and lunch. See you at Ryans. SPJST Flag Day (Continued from page I.)
Ages 6 to 8 Kenzie Angeley of Lodge 215, South Plains Ages 9 to 11 Victoria Henderson of Lodge 39, Bryan Ages 12 to 14 Kevin Galler of Lodge 66, Waco Ages 15 to High School Senior Amber May of Lodge 92, Fort Worth Eight-year-old Kenzie received a $150 in U.S. Savings Bond for her grand prize-winning efforts. All age category winners each received $50 in U.S. Savings Bonds. Kenzie's essay follows: Flag Day is the holiday celebrated for the adoption of the official United States flag. The flag has seven red stripes and six white stripes. It has on the left corner a blue background with 50 :starsrepresenting each state; the 13 stripes represent the colonies. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. Flags are flown at numerous sights, some being the school, courthouse, the President's house, and fire stations. The American flag is made of fabric. It is very important to take special care of and respect the flag. During bad weather, the flag should be taken down and folded. The flag also is folded in a special way. The flag should never touch the ground, and it should never be burned. We pledge to our flag for our independence. When someone is tragically killed in our military, we fly the flags at half-staff to show our respect for their courage. I think when you are born in the United States, you not only should receive a birth certificate but an American flag to own, so you will always know and be proud of your nation.
Other Flag Day highlights included patriotic singing and a reception in the SPJST Home Office. The Society expresses its appreciation to everyone who joined in this year's event. Essay Contest Entrants
