SPJST celebrates 104th anniversary Texans have long been familiar with the initials SPJST. It's a package deal built upon th idea of addressing human needs -financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the society together. It's a formula that works. This month the Society marks the completion of 104 years of fraternal service to its members and the communities that it seeks to serve. From "Day One," the sale and purchase of life insurance has been a cornerstone of membership in the SPJST. As such, the Society offers a wide range of insurance programs, annuity plans and mortgage options designed to meet the varying needs of its members. The fraternal component of the SPJST further enhances membership by emphasizing the social and civic responsibilities that members share with each other and the communities in which they live. There are few limiting factors placed on SPJST lodges and how they choose to meet their fraternal obligations. Really, what it comes down to is initiative and imagination. The guidelines which describe how the business of the SPJST is to be con-

ducted is found in the SPJST Bylaws. The services that members expect to receive from their Society are also set out in general terms in the bylaws. And, thanks to the democratic process, SPJST members have regular lodge meetings and conventions every four years to address the big issues. Reform and innovation are healthy processes and they are what keep the SPJST growing Supreme Lodge Charts Course While members own and control the SPJST, responsibility for managing the Society is delegated to a body of twelve individuals, democratically elected every four years at the convention. This group is collectively referred to as the SPJST Supreme Lodge. The Supreme Lodge consists of five officers who are elected statewide: President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Legal Advisor and seven district directors. SPJST members elect directors on the basis of geographic regions called districts. Selecting directors by district helps to ensure that regional interests are represented in meetings of the Supreme Lodge. (Continued on page 10.)

Enriching Lives

Fish fry to benefit Houston flood victims Dear SPJST Lodges and Members: A true act of fraternalism begins in the heart and community to help those in need. For this reason, we lend our support to the Houston flood victims. To assist our neighbors in need, SPJST is sponsoring a Fish Fry on Tuesday, July t 10, starting at 11 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall, located at 2218 West Avenue D in Temple. All of the proceeds will go to the Houston flood victims. We will be serving southern fried catfish filets, beans, coleslaw, bread and a dessert for $5 per plate. Our goal is 1,500 plates. (Continued on page 4.)

High ideals, innovation fuel SPJST's growth In telling the history of the SPJST — even a brief summary such as this — one must contend with the question of just where to start! A logical place to begin, perhaps, would be with the immigration of Czechs to the United States. Between 1834 and 1900, approximately 200,000 people of Czech descent immigrated from their native lands to America. Many of them ended . up in Texas. They brought with them the spirit of liberty and took great pride in this country which gave them the privilege to determine their own destiny and to bind together to achieve even greater things. Strength in Numbers In the 1880s, Czech pioneers in Texas elected to join other people of Czech descent in a fraternal benefit union called the CSPS, later known as the Czechoslovak Society of America (and now CSA Fraternal Life.). At the time, the CSPS, which was founded in 1854, was the largest organization of the Czech immigration community is the United States. The first Texas CSPS lodge was organized April 13, 1894. The idea caught on. By 1897, there were 27 CSPS lodges in Texas. In spite of this rapid growth, considerable discontent was expressed by members from Texas and the Midwest that the organization's insurance premium guidelines were overwhelmingly skewed in favor of eastern industrial workers. Texans leading the efforts to reform pricing concerns were I.J. Gallia and J. R. Kubena. The leader of the reformists in the Midwest was Jan Rosicky of Omaha, Nebraska. (Continued on page 3.)

Governor Signs. Tax Relief Bill Now That's Good News!

On June 15, 2001, Texas Governor Rick Perry signed House Bill 1689 into law. The bill amends Chapter 11 of the Tax Code to allow a property tax exemption for real and personal property of organizations engaged primarily in performing, charitable functions, if approved by a local taxing unit. The tax code amendments become effective September 1 and could result in property tax exemptions for some of our lodges as early as next tax season. According to fiscal notes issued by the Legislative Budget Board, to qualify for the exemption, the group seeking an exemption will first have to obtain a determination letter from the State Comptroller, stating that the lodge is "engaged primarily in charitable, functions." In turn, your county's chief tax appraiser will have to accept the letter as conclusive evidence of eligibility for the exemption. A new determination letter will be required every fifth year after the exemption was granted. According to the text outlined in the new law, certain real properties consisting of land and incomplete improvements could not be exempted for more than three years. "In short order, we'll be contacting our local lodges and informing them of what steps they need to take in order to apply for the exemption" says Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar, who offered testimony in support of the legislation in March. "Legislation doesn't just happen on its own," says President Leshikar, observing that between the time House Bill 1689 was introduced and signed by the Governor, it went through a series

of 54 committee and legislative procedures." House Bill 1689 was sponsored in the House by Representative Warren Chisum of Pampa. In the Senate, a companion bill was sponsored by Senator Gonzalo Barrientos of Austin, who represents Senatorial District 14. As You May Recall ... One of the events predating the introduction of House Bill 1689 was the narrow passage of House Joint Resolution (H.J.R.) 4 on November 2, 1999. This was one of the legislative items that many Texas fraternalists rallied to support. In passing H.J.R. 4, wording that an organization would have to engage in purely charitable functions was deleted from the Texas Constitution. Moreover, it stated that a qualifying organization need not engage exclusively in charitable functions as long as its other functions are "related to" its charitable activities. The resolution was sponsored by State Representative Edmund Kuempel of Seguin and Senator Jeff Wentworth of San Antonio. Passage of H.J.R. 4 by Texas voters in 1999 was the light at the end of the tunnel. And now, thanks to the recently passed "enabling legislation," community service organizations and fraternal groups will be able to request ad valorem exemptions under Section 11.18 of the Property Tax Code.

"The ame ndments become effective September 1 and could result in property tax exemptions for some lodges."

Additional details on the ad valorem exemption and how it could positively effect your lodge will be presented as they become available. -SPJST--

SPJST History (Continued from page 1.

The SPJST is Organized Certain financial demands were not met by the CSPS and the western and Texas delegates grew disenchanted with the practices of the society. Giving up their efforts at fiscal reform, Texas Czechs, shortly after 1896, decided to secede from the CSPS. In December of that same year, Texas delegates gathered in La Grange and set about the task of forming a new society. They directed two of their members to provide a Texas constitution: Augustin Haidusek, Frank Cihal and Jan R. Kubena. In March of 1897, the constitution was submitted to the Texas C.S.P.S. lodges for their consideration. Seven of the 25 Texas lodges approved the constitution and withdrew from the older society. These seven lodges represented the forefront of the fledgling SPJST organization. Official records of the society indicate that the SPJST started operations on July 1, 1897 as the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas), with 782 members and 25 lodges. The SPJST received its state charter on August 12, 1897. Kubena, widely regarded as the "Daddy of the SPJST" became its secretary — a position which he held until 1938 when he was killed in an auto-pedestrian accident in Galveston. Interesting to note — Jan Rosicky of Omaha, recognized for his reform efforts, was in the forefront of a group of Mid-Western states tlrat broke away from the C.S.P.S. to form the Western Bohemian Fraternal Association (ZCBJ) — which later became Western Fraternal Life Association (WFLA).

were made full time and additional office space was needed. In 1932, SPJST Supreme Lodge officers rented the building which had previously housed'the Fayetteville State Bank for a rental fee of $30 per month. That building served two, then three, Supreme Lodge officers until the early 1940s when the records and offices were moved to a larger building on the square in Fayetteville. Society with a Purpose From the outset, SPJST lodge meetings and social activities made members feel at home and provided them with the economic security of fraternal life insurance. But, there was much more to the SPJST than that . . . Through participation in lodge meetings and SPJST conventions, members learned and applied the democratic processes of their newly-adopted homeland. They grew to appreciate the value of free speech and to express their opinions. Moreover, they learned how to conduct meetings and the importance of voting. Having learned and adopted these American values, SPJST members became better citizens. The SPJST served its purpose well. During the SPJST's first 50 years of existence, American society and lifestyles changed dramatically. Our state and our nation was becoming progressively more industrialized. At the same time, the country was becoming more urban and less rural. Many people - including the sons and daughters of the early members — moved away from the farms and into the towns and cities. In many cases, they took the SPJST with them. Thus, it was during Phis time that many of our urban lodges were established. It was also during this time, following the 1952 Convention in Houston, that the SPJST moved its state headquarters to Temple.

"Kubena administered the affairs of the SPJST out of a single room in his general store."

Setting Up Shop The SPJST's first base of operations was located in Fayetteville, Texas. The reason being that the central figure in administering the affairs of the Society, Secretary J.R. Kubena, had his personal business operations located in that city. Until his death in 1938, Kubena administered the affairs of the SPJST out of a single room in his general store. It wasn't until the early 1930s that the other officers

The Move to Temple The move from Fayetteville to Temple was made during the months of August and September of 1953. District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Sunday, June 24, at Linden Hall, Elm Mott, Texas. It is just amazing what talents these young people have. There was a good attendance and I believe it was reported that there were more than 200 entries. Crafts, talent and royalty were all handled on the same day. This was the first time I had attended YAD with everything in one day and I, myself, thought it was a bit much for one day. The talent judges were a bit lengthy in their judging, which made things linger a bit. After the royalty, there was a cake auction on the children's cake entries. Then, later on in the presentations, there was a bit of a delay due to a called "staff meeting" on a controversy. Finally, it all ended around 6:45 p.m., at which time the doors were opened to the crafts room, but everyone was in a hurry to leave for home, so we did not get to view the children's crafts as we have been able to do in the past. I sure wanted to see what all was on display, but you could not view the entries as everyone was grabbing their stuff and leaving, which I understood under the circumstances. So, by going to this YAD event for the youth, we only got to see their individual and group talents, the royalty part of this event and the presentation of their awards, but we were unable to view what crafts received the awards. I even had grandchildren entering things in the crafts and receiving awards for the same, but I never got to view them and others as we should have been able to do before people started picking up their entries. Congratulations to all these fine youth of District Three for coming out and entering their wares and participating in the activities. All these children are great. Hopefully, we will get to view their entries at State YAD and at next year's YAD. Keep up the good work, kids. Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter — SPJST-

Lodge 92, Fort Worth reports on lodge, member activities 35th Anniversary Celebration Saturday, June 16 was the 35th wedding anniversary celebration for Kenneth and Mary Ann Tesar Krivanek. The matchmakers for this happy union of 35 years were Lavon Rosenauer and the late Ladik Maly. This celebration was coupled with the Tesar-Novak Reunion earlier in the day, which made for a large and happy crowd. Kenneth's relatives from Oklahoma as well as Mary Ann's relatives of Shiner and vicinity were here to help celebrate. The food and music by the Mikula's was great. May you have many more anniversaries. Their daughter, Mary Cecilia, did a great job of chronicling their courtship and their life through current times. In addition, it is important to note that Kenneth and Mary Ann are tireless volunteer workers in their church, at Lodge 92, and in other endeavors in the Fort Worth area. In Memoriam Condolences go to the family of Chris Oujesky. Chris is the son of Helen Matusevich Oujesky and the late Frank Oujesky. Chris is remembered as a former member of the Lodge 92 Youth Club. Christopher passed away on June 19, 2001 in San Antonio. Funeral services were held from St. Thomas Catholic Church in Fort Worth. He is mourned by his many family members of Lodge 92. Dr. Wells Stephens passed away on June 14, 2001. Although Dr. Stephens was not a member of SPJST, he was an ardent supporter of our Czech Heritage Day celebration and our polka dances as long as he was able. In the period 1939 to 1941, he was the researcher working in Hereford, Texas who documented the benefits of fluorine in the water of Deaf Smith County. To this day, fluoride is used as a preventative for tooth decay. Sympathy goes to his family. We will miss his friendly disposition.

Finally, the lodge approved a $25 prize drawing gift to the District Six Cookoff in September. Thank you Diana Johnson, FIC Secretary/Reporter/Sales Rep. —SPJST-

Lodge 148, El Maton honors 50-year members in June The June dinner went very well. There were over 80 members and guests present. We had several guests from Lodge 40, Mike Ahlstrom and Karen Kaspar. Fifty-year pins were handed out and a short meeting was held while everyone ate. Several things were decided at the meeting. The lodge will be going to monthly meetings and the meetings will be the last Sunday of each month at 2 p.m. at the Blessing Volunteer Fire Department. These will start in July. It was also approved to set up a youth club. The lodge also will be donating the old financial book to the Library, Archives and Museum at the Home Office. We feel that this book would be a valuable asset to the museum because the first few years of record keeping are done in Czech.

Lodge 154 salutes the late and beloved Joseph E. Milan in honor of Memorial Day. Joe valiantly served in the 815th Aviation Battalion of Army Engineers in both the European and the Pacific wars of World War II and won eight Medals of Honor. His assignment was to build new airfields and to rebuild damaged airfields for the immediate landing of American Joe Milan war planes. The first two years of the war, Joe Milan spent in North Africa, Italy, Corsica and Sicily. After a brief interlude, he was assigned to the Pacific where he served at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. At that time, Iwo Jima was heavily fortified and by 1944, it was supposedly impregnable to attack because the Japanese were dug in to the volcanic cavities of the island. After prolonged sea and air bombardment, three divisions of Marines landed on February 19, 1945 and to take control of the island after bitter and costly fighting. After the volcanic island of Okinawa was captured on April I, 1945, Joe and his battalion were sent in to build airfields. As soon as Joe arrived, he immediately dug himself a fox hole as he had been trained. Some younger draftees laughed at him, but Joe kept on digging! Soon mortar shells went off and Joe dove into his foxhole! However, he found that it was already full of the young guys! At a later time while Joe was walking on the beach with two of his buddies, both of them were shot and killed, but Joe escaped harm. While working on the nearby Okinawan Island of le, Joe was privileged to meet the great American news correspondent, Ernie Pyle who was personally endeared to the fighting men. Pyle had previously won a Pulitzer Prize for journalism in 1943 for two war compilations, "Here's Your War," and "Brave Men," which he had reported from the front lines in North Africa, Italy and Normandy. Ernie Pyle had written a book "G.I. Joe," which was the story of his life which was eventually made into a movie. There, on the Island of le, while observing the U.S. landing on the nearby main island of Okinawa, on April 18, 1945, Ernie Pyle was shot and killed some 20 feet from Joe Milan. Joe and some of his buddies buried Ernie and Joe photographed his grave. After the war, Joe attended

He eventually donated the photograph he took of Ernie Pyle's grave to a National World War II Museum. Having survived the horrors of the war, Joe professed that only his deep faith in God sustained him. We would like to also honor Joe's brother, Frankie Milan who bravely served our country under General Patton in North Africa, England and Italy; and Joe's brother-in-laws, Wilbur Mason, Donnie Steinman and Bill Renfro, who served in the U.S. Army, the Army Air Corps and the Navy C. B's respectively; and, my own daddy, Charlie Smith, who served in the Army Air Corps in North Africa and France as a heavy truck and airplane mechanic. So, nazdar, to our beloved, Joe Milan, our "G. I. Joe," and to all to the brave men who served with the same spirit as our fraternal organization. What greater sacrifice can a man make than to lay his life on the line to ensure that our country will be safe. God bless you all and may you have a great summer! And yeah! I am retired from teaching school after 32 years! Sincerely, Sharron Connelly —SPJST-

177, Academy reports on June meeting Lodge

Our meeting was called to order on Wednesday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Golden Corral in Temple. This was our second social for the year and we really had an exceptional turnout! During our brief business meeting prior to the social, we learned that Edgar Childers was still ill and Libbie Bartek, our Sunshine Committee Chairperson, had sent him a get well card. She also mailed a card to Irene

Johnson. Irene is recuperating from surgery after she had a pacemaker implanted. Irene, if you're reading this letter, we sure missed you at the social. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we hope to see you soon. We sure were happy to see Martha Garcia back at the meeting. Martha has some new knees and is ready (well almost ready) to go dancing! Glad to see you back! Lodge Extends Assistance President Bill Hutka presented to members recommendations for donations. The recommendations are: $500—Alma Leal (car burned); $500—LULAC, Temple-Belton Council; $500 Santa Sharing Group, Little River, Texas; $300 Gatesville Senior Citizens Center; $300—Soup Kitchen, Gatesville; $600—Little River Fire Department. After Bill presented these recommendations, members voted to make these donations as recommended. As you can see, we voted to donate a total of $2,700 to several worthwhile organizations. In addition to these, we also donated $100 to the Ebony Cultural Society and $250 to the Little River Girls Basketball team. That makes a total of $3,050 donated just in the last three months. We're very proud of the fact that our lodge supports organizations in the local community. After all, isn't that what fraternalism all about? Helping others to help themselves and better the community along the way . . . Sincerely, Kathy Fritz Secretary/Reporter —SPJST-

180, Burleson reports on June meeting Lodge

Our regular meeting was held on June 6, 2001. All minutes and reports were given. Benefit Dance August 19 We will be having a benefit dance on Sunday, August 19, 2001 for the community Hospice House at Hughly Hospital. The bands have been lined up. More details of the benefit dance will be forthcoming. This benefit dance is most definitely for a worthy cause, so please, everyone come on out and show your support. We had a guest speaker, Lanita Anglin, from the Supreme Lodge in Temple. Mrs. Anglin explained to us that we may see some tax relief for fraternal organizations such as SPJST. Legislation has passed the House of Representatives and the Senate and is now waiting for the signature of our Governor Rick Perry. Hopefully, this will help our lodge as well as others which are being hit with high property taxes. Mrs. Anglin also explained the Mission 2100 program in more detail and ways to reach our goal of 10 new members. Thank you, Mrs. Anglin, for coming to our meeting. We enjoyed having you with us. Rhonda Hurtik, on behalf of the lodge, gave each member present a beautiful flowering plant or a jar of preserves in honor of Mother's Day in May and for Father's Day in June. Thank you very much for the thoughtful gesture. We extend our get well wishes to Carol Hilcher. She is recuperating and doing better. We miss you, Carol, and hope that you feel better soon. Joe Hurtik, Jr. and Joe Babina put up our new banner on front of the building. Hopefully, this will bring in more hall rentals and possibly prospective new members. Thank you, both, for taking care of this for us. Our next dance will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2001. The doors open at 7:45 p.m. The dance will be from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. The band, Just Us, will play your favorite toe-tapping tunes. It is BYOB. The kitchen and soda bar will be open for your eating pleasure. So come on out, get some relief from a hot summer night and enjoy some country and western entertainment. There will be no meeting in July due to the Fourth of July holiday. Our next meeting will be held on August 1, 2001 at 6:30 p.m. The door prizes were won by Ann Sammet, Joey Sammet, John Hitcher, Ernest Deuser, Joe Hurtik, Jr. and our guest, Lanita Anglin. Lodge Letters (Continued from page 9.) Jerry Zmolek, husband of sister Ella Mae Zmolek, wrote an interesting write-up in the May 30, 2001 Vestnik, SPJST Herald. Now, I know who can take my notes when I cannot be at the meeting. Our next meeting will be July 19, 2001. Alice Roberts Reporter SPJST

Dallas Circle o Czech Women reports on June meeting Our meeting was called to order by President Bertha Podhrasky. Evelyn Trojacek led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Jerry Jennings, nephew of Martha Franka, Annie Petr and Helen Pokladnik. We had some visitors from Zmojno, Czech Republic—Josef and Marie Trochtov; relatives of Bertha and Julius Podhrasky; Janice and Kendal Carse, visitors of Florence Peressenyi; and Catherine Vanek, visitor of Eileen Jakubowski. Florence Peressenyi had a surprise for us. She brought Kendal Carse who is eight years old whom she has been sitting for since birth. Florence taught her the Czech song, "Cervena Sukinka"—The Red Skirt Waltz in Czech and she sang it for us. We really did enjoy the surprise. Sorry to hear of Faye Wright's injury. She fell and dislocated her right shoulder and she was unable to attend the meeting so we did not have any minutes to read. We wish her a quick recovery. Evelyn Trojacek read the correspondence including a note from Lydia Alholm and she said she missed seeing everyone, but the traffic is so bad she does not like to drive in it. Evelyn read a letter from Frank Mikula of the Dallas-Brno Sister City inviting everyone to go on the Czech Republic Adventure in January. Esther Cunningham will give a report of the trip later. Esther Cunningham gave Evelyn and all of us a copy of "Do Something Nice for Someone Else and Don't Tell Anyone." We also were glad to see Dorothy Sherrell is feeling good enough to come to the meetings. She also wanted to thank everyone for the cards and phone calls while she was recuperating. We hope she continues to feel good enough to attend the meetings. Georgia Brozek sent thinking of you cards to Anne Zvolanek, Mary Sebestik, Dorothy Sherrell, Lydia Kartous, Annie Staglik, Mary Sykora, Lydia Tyrock, Lydia Alholm; and sent a get well card to Carlyn Ondrusek and a sympathy card to Annie Petr and Martha Franka. We signed thinking of you cards for Lydia Tyrock, Faye Wright and Theresa Carper. I talked

to Helen Parma and she said she has not been feeling good. She said she is improving and we hope to see her soon at the meeting soon. Bertha read the birthdays in June and July and Kendal led us in singing, "Happy Birthday" to the celebrants. Announcements Esther Cunningham gave the report of the culture society. She said they are working on the program and book for the Ethnic Day at the State Fair on October 14, 2001 at the African American Museum at Fair Park. She said they are busy selling ads for the book. All the ads they sell will go to the culture society. The next meeting is June 25 at Czech club. Bertha said everyone is invited to come and help them make the decisions. Esther gave a report of the Sister city Dallas-Brno meeting. She handed out the itinerary of the Dallas-Brno Sister City Czech Republic Adventure to depart January 8, 2002 and return Saturday, January 20, 2002. Everyone is welcome to join them in the adventure. Fraternal Council meeting is June 11 with a picnic at SPJST Lodge 84, Dallas at 7 p.m. The ethnic international day in the Centennial building at Fair Park is Saturday, June 16 and Sunday, June 17. Bertha said that there would be over 200 ethnic groups represented. She hopes someone will wear his or her Kroj. There will be tables set up to show products from the Czech Republic. There will also be flyers from the different culture organizations. She hopes everyone will come. Under new business, we voted to buy Faye a recorder and tapes so she can record the meetings. In Memoriam in Memory of Jerry Zavodny The members of Lodge 24, Cyclone extend their heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of our deceased brother, JERRY J. ZAVODNY, who died on June 6, 2001 at his home in the Red Ranger community. Jerry, 87 years old, was born on November 18, 1913 in the Meeks community. He was the first son born to Josef and Lydia Bartos Zavodny. Jerry was a member of the SPJST Lodge 24, Flag Hall (Cesky Prapor) in Cyclone. He served as the local lodge's treasurer for 24 years. He was also an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cyclone; the

American Legion Post 9 in Cameron; worked several years as a delivery/salesman for Farmer's Butane company; worked his farm in Leedale and co-owned and co-worked, with his second wife, Louse, The Red Ranger Store. Jerry married, his first wife, Mollie Porubsky, in September 1939 and were married for 33 years. Jerry served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War 11, 1942 – 1946, as a sergeant stationed in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a pre-flight crew chief and mechanic for the B-24 Liberator Air Crafts. Jerry was proud to be an American and Texas and to be able to serve his country in its darkest hour. And in his darkest hour, Jerry continued to reminisce with friends and visitors of his duties with the operations

of the B-24s. Preceding him in death were his wife, Mollie Zavodny; two brothers, Alfred Zavodny and August Joe Lee Zavodny who was killed in action during the D-Day campaign in 1944. Jerry married Louise Mae (Marek, Psencik) in September 1972. During this time, Jerry continued his farming activities, working with the SPJST local lodge and surrounding communities and his work within the Red Ranger Store. Jerry was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed music—whether listening, singing or playing his accordion—mostly Czech and country-western songs. Jerry is survived by his wife, Louise; and two step-sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Ruth Psencik and Wayne and Regina Psencik; and four grandchildren, Tim Psencik, Justin Psencik, Emily Psencik and Rachael Psencik. He is also survived by two sisters, Henrietta Slavik of Cameron and Lillian Mikulec of the

13, Dime Box members prepare for YAD contests Lodge

Our June meeting was held on the 11th. We were told that Youth

Achievement Day (YAD) cards need to be turned in by June 18. We discussed the group talent. The next meeting will be July 21 at 4 p.m. We will also have our dress rehearsal and social and decorate the hall for YAD which will be the next day. Finally, we discussed and voted upon a new rule. It states that every member needs to donate $2 when we have a public meal or social instead of brining an item. This way, we know all the food will be there instead of someone missing because a person forgot to bring it. Last, I would like to congratulate Erin Jatzlau. She has made all the 2000-2001 meetings and was given a prize. This is the second year in a row that she has made all the meetings. Until next time— Emily Jatzlau, Reporter 7/4/01 —SPJST-

SPJST History (Continued from page 3. suitable quarters would have to be sought elsewhere, and the solution seemed to lie in the construction of a new building. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held on October 25, 1969 with formal dedication ceremonies which took place on Sunday, January 31, 1971. Again, operating in this new environment, the SPJST had an important mission to fulfill — to provide its members with identity and support at a time when life in America was becoming increasingly impersonal and unstable. Again, SPJST members rose to meet the challenge. The legacy of those days -- the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Homes, youth program and cultural enrichment programs — including the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum — remain with us today. Looking Forward to the Future Achieving success in the future will be a challenge; however, it too will be possible. Just as the SPJST's forefathers learned to adjust, the SPJST must respond to meet the financial and fraternal needs of its members in these changing times. One of the most significant fraternal developments in the SPJST over the past decade has been the increase in volunteerism and human services projects. In lodges all over the state, members are committing their time and energy to the support of worthwhile causes, helping people in need by working in hospitals, old age homes and raising money for many causes, including scholarships, food banks, volunteer fire departments, drug abuse programs and various charities. They have taken the best that the SPJST has to offer — a tradition of helping people to care for their families — and have extended it to their communities. Indeed, there is great hope for the future of fraternalism and the SPJST. With a renewed commitment to its members and the communities that the SPJST serves, the best is yet to come! Simply stated, the SPJST is an idea that is still in the making. —SPJSTThe SP1ST Makes
