SPJST LAM purchases historic Temple building Meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple last week, SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) directors voted to purchase of the historic 6,900 square-foot Northside Community Center located at the intersection of West French and North Third Streets in Temple. Plans are to develop the building and site — which is adjacent to the SPJST Home Office — as a hub of operations for the SPJST LAM. The decision to proceed with the purchase was made possible — in large part — to a check for $135,000 presented to LAM Directors during the meeting by Honorary District Five Director Louis Hanus. This is the second significant gift made by Brother Hanus to the LAM. Minutes after delegates to the SPJST's 2000

Numerous items were addressed by LAM directors at their first annual meeting, including operating standards and procedures, marketing and promotional considerations. In other LAM board activity, the appointment of Leonard Mikeska to fill the unexpired term of District Two LAM Director Risa Pajestka was ratified. The appointment runs through 2002. Making Things Happen Last week's decision by the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum Board of Directors to purchase the historic Northside Community Center in Temple, signals a refreshing new era of development for the LAM. The decision to branch out is both progressive and practical. Progressive in that it reflects the LAM's independence and readiness to explore its potential as a museum and genealogical research center. Practical in the purchase price of $135,000 didn't bust the LAM's fledgling budget. Even better — the property, which adjoins a lot belonging to the SPJST, offers significant development potential. Will everyone agree with the decision to buy the new property? "Probably not," says LAM President Kaminsky, who heads the volunteer board. "But that's life. Change is constant. The decision to purchase the building was made with the best interests of the SPJST LAM at heart. "We're getting ready for what will be an exciting time of growth and development for the LAM." A defining characeristic of the LAM Board of Directors is the pace and vigor with which they address the items on their agenda. This was evident at their meeting in Temple on July 18. They have a lot of ideas; moreover, they are ready and willing to consider the ideas of others. "We appreciate the input that we have received from our members — and non-members of the SPJST," says Brother Kaminsky. "Anyone — groups or individuals — who would like to get involved with the LAM are encouraged to contact their LAM director." LAM directors and their phone numbers are listed on page three of this week's Vestnik. The LAM's desire to involve people of all ages dovetails with the SPJST's purpose, as defined in our By-Laws, "to promote our common bond by keeping alive and encouraging the cherished traditions of the Czech history, culture, heritage and family." If you read this week's cover story, you'll know that the SPJST LAM will be making a big push during the month of October to rally SPJST lodges and youth clubs. It's a great idea! Not only is that Czech Heritage Month, as LAM. Treasurer Margaret Haisler pointed out, it's also the month that lodges and youth clubs can get active in Make a Difference Day. This year, that falls on Saturday, October 27.
What's Make a Difference Day? Make a Difference Day is widely regarded as the nation's biggest national day of helping others — a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. And your lodge — youth and adult — can participate. It isn't hard to do. Established by USA WEEKEND
magazine, millions have participated since the day was first organized. Your project can be as large or as small as you wish. Just look around your community and see what needs to be done. Or, as LAM Treasurer Margaret Haisler suggests, rally your troops to promote and support the SPJST LAM. Anyone -- young, old, individuals and groups — anyone who can carry out a volunteer project that helps others can take part in Make a Difference Day. If your lodge is already involved in community service projects, that's great! If not, consider the merits of devoting your effort to a project that will help the SPJST LAM. Complete details on how to get your group involved in Make a Difference Day are available from the Make a Difference Day website (www.usaweekend. com/diffday/index.html) . Also, in August, lodges and youth clubs will be receiving additional information on how to participate in Make a Difference Day from LAM President Kaminsky. V Check Out These Added Incentives Starting in September, managers of Wal-Mart's more than 2,300 stores will each have $1,000 in grants to help you fund local Make a Difference Day projects. But that's not all Wal-Mart will also be donating $2,000 to 104 select projects — two from every state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Finally, Paul Newman, who donates all aftertax profits from sales of Newman's Own products to educational and charitable purposes, continues his support of Make A Difference Day. Mr. Newman will donate $10,000 each to 10 selected projects. If your lodge or youth club wants to participate this year, the main thing to remember is to gear your event to take place on Saturday, October 27, 2001. If you need more than one day for the project, that's fine. Just plan to do a good part of your volunteering on Make a Difference Day.
"The property, which adjoins a lot belonging to the SPJST, offers significant development potential."

Taking Inventory SPJST Library, Archives and Museum directors and friends conduct inventory of recent acquisitions belonging to the estate of Dr. Svatava P. Jakobson. Dr. Jakobson, who died last year, was highly regarded as a University of Texas at Austin professor, author, folklorist and musicologist. The SPJST LAM acquired the collection in March. Pictured above, from left, are SPJST Communications Assistant Katherine Smith, Austin architect Roger Kolar, who represented the estate, LAM Treasurer Margaret Haisler, Dan Mares and LAM Secretary Roxanne Bertrand. Tentative plans are to dedicate the interim Svatava P. Jakobson Reading Room at the SPJST Home Office on October 21.

(Continued from page 1.) The Mission The SPJST LAM's Mission Statement is as follows: The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum is dedicated to fostering educational, cultural and genealogical opportunities. It accomplishes this by providing genealogical research opportunities, sponsoring educational programs, collecting, exhibiting and preserving artifacts to implement the programs. The LAM extensively researches the authenticity of the collections and all presentations. Keeping in line with this mission, the SPJST LAM is actively seeking new acquisitions to add to its collections and exploring other options for growth. "Our hope is that these efforts result in a dynamic museum and library program that stays true to the spirit in which the SPJST LAM was conceived nearly a half century ago,' concludes Brother Kaminsky. —SPJST-

State Youth Director invites one and all to attend State YAD, Royalty on August 4 Dear Members and Friends, I cordially invite you to attend SPJST State Royalty and Youth Achievement Day (YAD) on Saturday, August 4 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center, located at 3303 North Third Street in Temple. The day will be filled with talent, crafts, and lots of excitement. The 2001-2002 SPJST State King and State Queen will be crowned on Saturday evening. Food will be available throughout the day, including a pizza lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $3. There is no admission charge and the event is open to the public. For the first time since the 1980s, State YAD will be held on one day. This change came about from suggestions across the state. We are looking forward to what promises to be a very enjoyable and entertaining day. Our young members have spent countless hours preparing for this weekend. Come show them your support, encouragement and appreciation. You won't want to miss this year's
individual and group talent contests. Four beseda groups will also perform. Likewise, the districts' top crafts, special category, poster and scrapbook entries will also be on display and competing for top honors. I've seen most of these entries across the state at District YADs this summer, and they are awesome. SPJST has some of the most talented youth in the state of Texas. I certainly am proud of them and love to brag about them! To the young people participating in the 2001 State YAD contests, please note the registration time for all entries — craft, talent, special category royalty, scrapbook, poster and beseda — is from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 4. No late entries will be accepted. I wish you much success with your entries. I am so proud of your efforts. You are all winners. Best wishes! Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood expresses thanks to members for assisting with picnic Hi! There were 25 people at the Lodge 6, Cottonwood picnic workday, Saturday, July 14. We all were busy peeling lots of potatoes, chopping lots of pickles and pimentos for the making of the potato salad, and dressing out lots of chicken. Auction items were being taken care of also on this day. Thanks to all of you who showed up to work and thanks to all who brought picnic items on Saturday. Some of the kitchen folks showed up the next morning starting at about 5 a.m. for to fry chicken, get last minute things ready for the picnic and prepare the meal. Everyone did their jobs for the day and it all came about beautifully. Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way. Thanks to Ella Macik for stepping in and helping out with the serving of the tea. Christine Matus and Annie Chudej were missed. They were on the sick list and could not make it this year. Wow, we all missed the children this year. They were at Camp Val Verde for District Three Camp. I bet they were all were having a tremendous time. It was very hot, but the children probably don't mind the weather as much as us adults. Thanks to Karen Sonnenberg for helping out with the auction this year. Also thanks to our auctioneers, K. K. Heitmiller, Edwin Nors, Milton Peterson and George Sulak. We could not have done it without you guys doing such a great job. Thanks again! Next Meeting August 5 Looking forward to seeing lots of you folks at our .next lodge meeting, which has been scheduled for a later time due to another function at the hall. Also you may have noticed in last week's Vestnik that I "goofed" on the date for our meeting. Our meeting will be on Sunday, August 5 at 5 p.m. Thanks to Ernest and Evelyn Bezdek and George and Lucille Sulale for our meal at this meeting. Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter -SPJST-

Lodge 15, Buckholts member anticipates Czech classes in '02 This is in reply to the many inquiries regarding the conversational Czech class that was not held this year when the use of the hall was denied us by Lodge 15 because it was not a moneymaker. That fact was greeted by disappointment and, in some instances, by anger. True, it isn't a moneymaker for Lodge 15 or for any other SPJST lodge, but that is not the intended purpose in the first place. It's intended to perpetuate the Czech language and our Czech heritage. After all, the SPJST was founded by Czechs - an act of trust and courage that deserves to be honored. Also, if for no other reason, it is good PR and all lodges struggling to exist can use good PR. Numbers speak to the fact that the course was a success since we had 21 pupils the first year and 17 the next. No denying the fact that interest is there. I say unto you, don't despair, we will have a course in conversational Czech early next year. Since we have been offered alternative sites, we will settle for one most suitable to all. Corpus Christi Circle of Women report on July meeting Twenty-five members, two honorary members and guests, Raymond and Judy Veselka, Myles Marek, Dorothy Berner and Savannah, Adriana and Johnny White attended our fifth of July meeting at Sokol Corpus Christi. The meeting room was beautifully decorated in red, white and blue with American flags displayed behind our serving table at one end and a three foot Uncle Sam hanging at the other end. Fourth of July decorations hung along the side. Each table had a silver center piece and our serving table held a red, white and blue floral arrangement. Honorary members Jerry Elzner and Clement Kasparek have our gratitude for all their work creating this beautifully decorated meeting room for our enjoyment. It was such a lovely surprise. Thanks go to Dorothy McCoy for furnishing the floral arrangement. Jerry Elzner topped it all off by wearing his red, white and blue sequined vest and cap. A moment of silence was observed in memory of Frances Bailey, sister of Mary Foyt, who was not present. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to her and the family. A sympathy card was signed for Mary. Thinking of you cards were also signed for Marcellina Mokry, Velma Malchar, Anita Regmund, Lillian Covill and Mattie Netek. A lot of snapshots were brought to the meeting. Helen Pavelka brought three which were taken of our Easter egg collection. They were so colorful.
I brought pictures taken of our birthday members over the past five months and Jerry Elzner gave us pictures taken at our June meeting and also a very nice picture of Sokol Corpus Christi officials. Helen Kasparek is financial secretary. Picture postcards were received from England and Paris where Agnes Burge and grandson, Charlie McRae were vacationing along with Dania Tresohlava. Charlie will be staying on in Prague for two months learning the Czech language. A thank you card was received from the Reverend Monsignor George Harris for all the jars brought by our members last month. Jerry Elzner delivered them to his mother's (Helen Sacky's) home. The Reverend Monsignor gave us a half gallon of his homemade pickles and Jerry got a quart which I heard was consumed by the family at one sitting. Lil Hruska flew to Houston last month to spend a couple of days visiting her granddaughter and family and admiring newly arrived great-granddaughter, Julia. Baby Julia is Lil's 17th great-grandchild, not seventh as reported in my June letter. Agnes Burge sent us a Watkins Heritage Collection soup bowl and mug for a door prize and her daughter, Diane McRae, sent a beautiful round, wooden box with a decorative lid made in Poland. Thanks to both for these lovely prizes. Lillie Hayek brought a beautiful ivy plant, a pint of home grown and canned peaches and a pint of ice box pickles. Helen Pavelka brought a jar of her tomato preserves and also fresh picked cantaloupes. Pauline Novosad brought a potted freestone peach tree. I can't recall who won it„but they should be picking their own fresh peaches in a couple of years. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Helen Sacky and Jerry Elzner. Happy birthday is also sent across the miles to Agnes Burge and Mattie Netek. Kathy Marek reported on the 10th anniversary committee meeting. The luncheon will be catered and the cost of each plate must be paid in advance (price to announced.) A group picture will be taken at our August 2 meeting so it will be available for our October celebration. Friendship Club reports on July social The members of Friendship Club met on Wednesday, July 11 at Ryans Steak House for our Annual Eating Out Social. Thirty-five members attended and following a short visit, President Alice Barnes said we needed to take care of some business. Alice reminded Elsie Anders, Pauline Cox and Dorothy Crombie they are scheduled to be hostesses in
August. Also, August is a designated month in which we bring food for St. Thomas Food Pantry and also month for our little gift exchange. "Happy Birthday" was sung to July celebrants of Martha Clifton, Jeanie Mason, Cathy Ornsbee, Billye Starr and Rosie Steinman. May you all have many more. The waiters at the restaurant then came in and sang their own birthday song and presented each with a balloon and a special luscious dessert. Treasurer Maryann Kozel presented the treasurer's report which was accepted. Sunshine Person Lydia Alholm reported on sending get well cards to Leonor Aguilar, Georgia Davidson Linda Lewis' husband, Anna Johnson and Billy King. A sympathy card was send to Georgia Davidson who lost her brother. The food at Ryans is always so good and no one left hungry. I don't believe any of us had to eat the rest of the day. News of Members We are all saddened by the death of Linda Lewis' husband. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you, Linda, and your family. Joe and Mary Ann Kozel, Martha Boenisch, Elsie Anders and Bob and Pat McWilliams went to Memphis, Tennessee and Tunica, Mississippi with Omni America Travel Club. They visited several casinos in Tunica. Highlights were a trip to Graceland and guided tour of Memphis which included a visit to St. Jude's Children Home which was started by Danny Thomas. All thought it was a very interesting and fun trip. On June 26 and 27, Joe and Mary Ann celebrated their 38th wedding Anniversary with a trip to Bossier City. Mary Ann considered the trip successful. Guess she either was a big winner, or broke even. Wonder which it was? Alice Barnes enjoyed her family reunion at Nacogdoches with about 150 folks attending from eight states. Alice went to Mass first and then enjoyed a most plentiful dinner at the Church Hall. Alice said she visited with relatives she hadn't seen in 25 years and some she had never seen. Alice said it was a most enjoyable day. Billy King is now in a wheel chair recovering from a broken hip. We, missed you, Billy—get well soon. Anna Johnson had a marvelous time attending her granddaughter's wedding in Austin. Melissa Johnson was married to Irvin Janak on June 13 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church with a beautiful reception following. Linda Horner reported a good time on her Alaskan Cruise in spite of all the problems. First, they sat
on the runway for a long time and then ended up being put into a hotel for the night. After finally getting out of DFW and getting on board the ship, their luggage hadn't arrived so they had to wear the same clothes for four days until their luggage caught up with them at the first port. Then on their return flight, because of earlier airport problems, their return flight ticket had been pulled in error and they had to buy other tickets. Linda, hope you've received your refund by now. Carrie Milan, Rosie Steinman and I attended the Sokol Slet in Detroit along with others from Fort Worth, Ennis, Dallas and West. Rosie and I even participated in the program while Carrie was only a spectator. While there, Rosie and daughter, Mary, son, Jodie and granddaughter, Appa and Carrie and daughter, Carolyn, all decided to drive to Niagara Falls. On the way back, Mary missed a turn and they ended up in Toronto, Canada, but this didn't upset them at all. They just toured Toronto, went up on the C&W Tower which is the world's tallest single structure and returned to Detroit at 3 a.m. the next day. My sister, Georgie Morales, her daughter in-law, Cathie, and granddaughter, Calleigh from Ennis also went. We all had a good time. All the Sokol activities were great. We went to the Henry Ford Museum; we went across the Detroit River into Winsor, Canada, and Rosie and her group even went to MoTown, the recording studio. I have to brag some—my grandniece, Calleigh Morales, placed first in her group in competition. It was nice to see Georgia Davidson as she had surgery recently, and our sympathy goes out to you on the loss of your brother. On July 4, Lydia and Roy Alholm were treated to a swim party and cookout at the home of their son, R.L. Frances Matthews and I were also invited and we had a great time. R.L. sure can make some good sauerkraut in addition to being handy at the grill. It was a fun day. Also, Lydia and Roy made another successful trip to Bossier City. Jeanie Mason was treated on her birthday to a supper at Steak and Ale with about 45 family members present to help her celebrate. Also hear she and Katherine Garrison made another trip to Bossier City. Seems our members are keeping the highway busy by traveling to Bossier City all the time. Don't forget the next meeting is on August 1. Bring a covered dish for lunch, a little gift for the exchange, and food for the Food Bank. See you then. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST--

For more than loce years, the SPJST has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live, work and play. We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 411111P ► -'11:111PIIM. ..7.• 11111111■1 vavalr war
