Plan on Having Fun Looking for something to do this coining Labor Day Weekend? How about Westfest? August 31 September 2, tli• community of West - just north of Waco on IH-35 hosts their 26th annual celebration. Westfest offers a family-oriented blend of food, culture, dance, arts, crafts and just plain fun! The colorful Westfest Parade winds its way through the streets of downtown West on Saturday morning, beginning at 10 a.m. One of the largest parades in Central Texas, it will mark the first public appearance by the SPJST's 2001-2002 Royalty Court. Royalty Court members will also be introduced during the afternoon program at the Multicultural Amphitheater. As in past years, several SPJST. lodges and youth clubs will be involved in Westfest, either as performers, ven• dors or parade participants. For details, including bands, cultural entertainment and contests, please refer to the Westfest advertisement which appeared in last week's Vestnik. Or, for those of you with Internet access, visit the Westfest web site at www.westfest.com . The following Saturday, on September 8, the action moves south to Caldwell, northwest of Bryan on Highway 36. Citizens there will be hosting their 17th Annual Kolache Festival and issue a cordial invitation for you to attend. The Kolache Festival - like Westfest also involves several regional SPJST lodges
and members. For more details, please see their ad on page 26 of this week's Vestnik or visit them, via the Internet at www.rtis.com/regicaldwell/ent/. Seems like every weekend between now and the middle of November, there's something fun going on - a festive, member- or lodge-oriented event somewhere in Texas. Check out the Family Fun calendar on page three, Lodge Letters Section and Calendar section on pages 26 and 27 and make plans to have fun!

What a Blast! Judging from what we heard on the day of the contests and from the mail we've been
receiving, this year's State Youth Achievement Day and Royalty Competition was one of the best! Thanks to all of the youngsters and adults who worked together to make it a success! See pages 6-8 and 14-17 for coverage and list of winners. Watch for YAD and Royalty candid photos in the Vestnik in two weeks.
YAD was a blast this State year. We got to catch up with people from all over that we don't get to see very often, enjoy good entertainment, and have a lot fun. The talent acts were very creative in both the junior and senior levels and the royalty speeches were awesome this year. sorry for the judges in I felt both categories this year. Everyone did a great job and it was obvious everyone worked realall! ly hard. Congratulations to Fraternally, Crystal Bartek Lodge 47, Seaton

Do you have a total of $5,000 or less SPJST insurance? If so, look in your mailbox. You'll soon be receiving information from SPJST about additional "Guaranteed" insurance that you can purchase in amounts of $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 or $5,000 of coverage. Each . letter is personalized with premiums .based on the member's current age. According to Supreme Lodge Vice ... President Gene McBride, quite a few · SPJST members have $5,000 or less insurance and which is not enough in today's world for funeral and final expenses. Because of this, SPJST is making a special offer available to those members and offer additional "guaranteed" insurance. This coverage is available regardless of their past or current health. Members have 120 days from the date of the letter to respond.
No Waiting Period Another unique feature is that there is no waiting period for full coverage unlike some companies that require the certificate be in force for two or three years before the full death benefit is available. "We've had members call us that have received the letter asking if there is a waiting period. There is none. The full death benefit is in effect after we receive the first full premium in the Home Office. The premiums are based on smoker/non-smoker and male/female categories," according
to McBride. "We've had several members call in and ask how we can make such an opportunity available since it requires no medical or health questions. My response is that the offer is only available to SPJST members only." McBride says that if you're an SPJST member, have $5,000 or less insurance and haven't received your letter yet, don't worry. All members will be receiving one soon . However, if you've already received your letter and have misplaced it or have questions, call the Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and they'll assist you. According to McBride, this a valuable opportunity that our members deserve to take advantage of and here's a summary of the offer available: SPJST Guaranteed Life Insurance • Available to SPJST Members only and those with a total of $5,000 or less insurance •Insurance Amounts $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 and $5,000 -Member has 120 days to purchase additional insurance from receipt of letter • Premium based on male/female and smoker/non-smoker rates • No medical required • Available regardless of your past or present health -Only available to Texas residents Certificate contains two-year suicide clause. Not available SPJST members to residing in nursing facilities -SPJST-

Mission 2100 Updates SPJST records 948 applications through July in Mission 2100 program Through the end of July 2001, the SPJST had received applications for 948 insurance certificates. Over the same period, a total of 866 insurance certificates were issued. The goal of the 2001 Mission 2100 membership drive is to write at least 2,100 applications in 2001. In conjunction with the SPJST's Mission 2100 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year 2001. In most cases, the lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.
The fourth column,"Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with active youth clubs and reflects the number of applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals will be applied toward the lodge's total quota. An asterisk (*) denotes that the lodge does not have a youth club. The sixth column "Lodge Incentive Count" reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through July 31, 2001. —SPJST-

SPJST records 962 referrals through July in Mission 2100 program The SPJST's Mission 2100 program is a year-long campaign, calculated to generate at least 2,100 applications for membership in the Society by year-end. "For Mission 2100 to succeed, we must involve all levels of the SPJST towards achieving this energetic goal," said SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride in an article which appeared in the January 10 Vestnik. "It's an ambitious goal, but one which I am sure we can achieve." To help achieve the objectives of the Mission 2100 program, several incentives are being offered. Members who make referrals that result in written applications will be recognized as follows: • Recruit One Member - Name in Vestnik.
• Recruit Three Members - Name and photograph in Vestnik. • Recruit Six Members - Name and photo in Vestnik, photo plaque for lodge. • Recruit Ten Members - Name and photo in Vestnik; photo plaque for lodge; photo in local newspaper. • Recruit Twenty-one Members Name and photo in Vestnik, photo plaque for lodge; photo in local newspaper; photo on SPJST wall "Roll of Honor." • Overall Top Recruiter - Special recognition at the 2002 SPJST Awards Banquet (receives mileage to and from banquet.) Lodge 177, Academy hosts District Two fall meeting September 16 District Two Members, Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 16, 2001 at 2 p.m. It's Fall Meeting —fun day — time! This year's fall meeting will be held at Lodge 177, Academy. We're really excited about having our fall meeting there this year. Thanks to the officers of Lodge 177, Academy for agreeing to host our meeting and assist the district with meeting plans. Here's a list of activities planned along with a meeting agenda: Country Stores Tickets for the games will be sold this year at 10 tickets for $1 (no free tickets will be given). Please bring two food items per person for the country stores. The country stores seem to be a real favorite activity for both young and old alike and we're happy to provide them again this year. Cakewalk Please bring one cake (or more if you like) for our cake walk. Those of you who attended the fall meeting last year in Taylor at Lodge 29 should remember how much fun everyone had with the cake walk. Youth club members will assist again this year, and we may have two cakewalks if we have plenty of cakes. Christmas Ornaments Both adults and youth can enter this contest. (See rules below.) Last fall, we had several adults enter and boy, were there some beautiful and "creative" ornaments. Remember, that all first place youth ornaments will be hung on the youth Christmas tree at the SPJST Home Office. We will
award prizes to first, second and third place winners in the adult category, and the same to each age category in the youth entries. Silent Auction Our youth will again provide us with a very entertaining silent auction. It seems the adults have a lot of fun "trying" to outbid each other! Best of all, all monies goe to a good cause— the district youth fund. Thanks to Patsy for organizing this again this year. What SPJST Fraternalism Means to Me by Nathan Block
We won! Yes! It was right here at the Fraternal SPJST Youth Achievement Day. We won! Fraternal SPJST, what is fraternalism to me? Fraternalism is winning and it is also losing. The SPJST has taught us how to win humbly and how to loose gracefully and that success or winning is trying one more time than we have failed. But, fraternalism is more to me. Loving: if it weren't for the love our parents have for us as children, none of us would have this opportunity to be here today. Caring:
how could Fraternalism and the SPJST survive without the caring of our youth leaders, who give so freely of their time Fraternalism is family. As I look around the audience, I see parents and grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles and cousins. I see family!! Fraternalism is sharing! The greatest example of fraternalism I have ever seen happened in this very center. This is a true story! We were entered in group talent and were using a couple of black lights for effect. As we prepared for competition on this huge stage, our two black lights were almost totally ineffective. An approaching gentleman noticed the distress of our leader and asked if he could help. After frantically explaining the problems to him, he tilted his head slightly and with a twinkle in his eye offered to share their six black lights with us. Our leader was astonished as she said but, but, we are competing against your group, do you think the others in your group will care. Again, with sincerity in his eyes and a firmness in his voice he said, "Ma'am, I am bursting with fraternalism and would be more than happy to share our lights with you." We won that day as I told you earlier. No, we didn't win the group talent. The gentleman's group who shared with us won. I guess that was his reward. But, we won because we learned the true meaning of fraternalism, the true meaning of winning and losing and caring and family and sharing. Thank you, SPJST, for teaching us such a valuable lesson at such an early age. Thank you and God bless SPJST.
The Value of Teamwork Within the SPJST by Jamie Lyn Novak
What does the value of teamwork within the SPJST mean to me? We all have heard the saying there is no "I" in team. This statement is literally true. Team is spelled t-e-a-m. There is literally no "I" in the word team. But when I look at the SPJST and how teamwork effects this organization is begin to see where the letter "I" can be used. (Continued on page 8.)

Lodge 9, Snook member awarded State Merit Scho arsh Congratulations to Candice Macik, a member of Lodge 9, Snook. Candice is the recipient of the 2001 SPJST State Merit Scholarship. She is is the daughter of Kenneth and Karen Macik of Snook. Candice received the $1,500 scholarship during the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day program on Saturday, August 4 at the Frank W. Mayborn Convention Center in Temple. Candice's future plans are to attend Blinn Junior College and Texas A&M University where she will pursue a business career as a commercial banker. Teens from each district with the most youth merit points over the last three years competed for the scholarship. As part of the competition, each teen submitted a 1,000-word essay. The winner was selected by a panel of judges using the following criteria: Neatness: 15 percent; Content: 50 percent; and Mechanics (grammar, spelling and sentence structure): 35 percent. District Merit Scholarship winners are pictured below. Candice's essay follows:
SPJST: Reaching For The Stars "Reaching for the Stars" is what SPJST is all about. By being a member of the SPJST for the past 17 years and the youth club for the past 12 years, I have learned through various programs and projects that looking beyond the past and into the future, you will find never ending opportunities while striving for excellence. The one thing I can share in following your dreams, is that if you choose not to you'll always have those thoughts in the back of your mind. I have learned that happiness is very important in these goals that I strive for. Whether or not it is furthering my education, and finding a hobby based on my own interest, but not what another person wishes for me. That's why reaching for the stars to me suggests: S—Setting a goal; T—Taking on responsibility; A—Acting in an appropriate and safe way; R— Respecting others and myself; and S—Shine by doing my best.
State Merit Scholarship Winner Congratulations to Candice Macik of Lodge 9, Snook in District One, SPJST's 2001 Merit Scholarship Winner, pictured here with District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. Set Goals Setting a goal is one way of reaching for the stars. To realize your goals you need to shape, define and visualize it. The second step is to make a commitment to your goal. And the most important step, the one many of us forget, is to take action. This means do something everyday that will help us achieve our goal. "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Any goal that is worthy of us, is worth a few minutes of our time and some of our energy every single day. Through the SPJST Youth Club, I have find out how to set goals, like becoming president of the youth club, finishing YAD projects, participating in two or more charity and/or community events a month and of course accomplishing the goals that I have set for myself. Upon graduating from high school, I plan to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree then eventually acquiring my master's. While accomplishing my dream/goal, if I feel I've fallen behind, I will visu(Continued on page 8.)

8/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 15, 2001
Candice Macik (Continued from page 7.) alize myself as to how I will feel when I've reached my goal. I try not to think about what I am sacrificing to accomplish it or ways that I might fall, but see my goal as the positive inevitable future. Accept Responsibility Taking on responsibility helps you to reach your goals. SPJST has made me a more responsible person by being in charge of various committees, holding various offices and being in various activities on a timely basis. Through the SPJST and my parents, I have discovered that by good studying habits and hard work, whether it be lines for a program, speech, homework, tests, or my job, that I can accomplish anything that I set my mind to. I have learned to do neat work and being prompt. At my job, I have the responsibility of being punctual and accomplishing my designated job duties assigned in an efficient manner. By being committed and responsible, we can do whatever it takes to make it happen. We can turn obstacles into opportunities. When I decided what my goals and dreams were, I decided that I would do whatever it took to make them happen. Share Your Dreams
Talking and discussing with people about your goals and dreams helps. People who meet regularly in an atmosphere of trust and harmony for the purpose of providing mutual support and encouragement will allow us to reach our goals along the way. By surrounding myself with people committed to improving themselves and planting myself firmly among them reinforces my paths and goals. Acting in an appropriate and safe manner is also an important asset in striving for excellence. Through the SPJST youth clubs, youth officers' workshops, Leaders-In-Training retreats and camp, I have found out what is appropriate, especially through the ropes course and other
Royalty Speeches (Continued from page 7.) The SPJST reminds me of the Olympic torch ceremony. The torch is ignited and passed on to every single country. The Home Office represents the first ignition of the torch. They have been a strong foundation that has led this organization to over 100 years of service. Without their support throughout the last century, the SPJST would not be where it is today. But now that they have held that torch for a century, it is now time to pass it off to the next generation. As far as the SPJST stands right now, our whole organization is being operated by a team of older people. This is not a bad thing, but we need to start thinking about the future. See
experiences at camp. Throughout my life, my parents have taught me what is right and what is wrong. As David Russell, director of the Forgiveness Project—London School of Economics, writes, "The hardest thing to learn in life is which bridge to cross and which to burn." I try to stay away from barriers that would sidetrack me from my goals so I could stay focused and headed in the right direction. That is why I have been involved in SPJST, 4-H, National Honor Society, Future Farmers of America, Student Council, and Brethren Youth Fellowship. In order to obtain my goals, I have to respect others and myself. SPJST and other organizations that I am involved in have helped me to achieve this. The fraternalism found in the SPJST has led me to love, to forgive and to extend a helping hand to others by the many charitable projects and community services I participate in each year. I have discovered that being able to forgive and work cooperatively with others has given me the respect I need for myself and others. In conclusion, I will shine by doing my best so that my goal to reach for the stars is accomplished. In order to shine, I will be the best that I can be. SPJST has given me the feeling of being on top by receiving Junior of the year, Teen of the Year and several first places that I have won at state. This made me feel good about myself and made me want to shine even more. My parents have always told me to keep trying until I succeed and never give up. They also told me not to say I can't do it. Always say "I can," because if you can dream it, you can do it. All your dreams can come true if you have the courage to pursue them. In conclusion, reaching for the stars implies that you can accomplish anything by setting goals, taking responsibility, acting in an appropriate safe way, respecting self and others and4 shine by doing your best. By doing these five things, you will be able to reach all your goals and dreams and succeed in life. SPJSTThe SPJST needs more dedicated young individuals to be able to receive that torch and lead the SPJST to a stand strong organization. When I think of teamwork and how the SPJST is involved I think of a turtle. It is secure if it stays inside the shell, but if it wants to move ahead it has to stick out its neck! The SPJST is in a secure place and it is now time to move ahead. So what is more important in a team? The equality of the individual or how well the group works together? As the famous football coach Vince Lombardi once said, "Individual commitment to a group effort—that is what makes a team work." It's now time to hand off the torch to the next decade of young team members so our torch can shine bright for the next century. Thank you and God bless. —SPJST-

Everyday Hero Congratulations to Sister Edna Voldan, a member of Lodge 79, Corpus Christi, who was recently presented with an SPJST "Everyday Hero" pin by Lodge President Jerry Sijansky. while learning yet another language. We wish her the best. Our guest, Jerry Sijansky, not only took our group picture after setting up two rows of chairs for us in the main hall, but also brought his delicious banana cream cake for our enjoyment after lunch. He also showed all interested members the progress he had made in the Sokol library. The display cases he built are very professional with glass shelves and doors and mirrored backs to reflect displayed items. I brought a round box made by a member of the Dallas Circle of Czech Women and purchased by my
grandmother at a Dallas Sokol bazaar. It is made of colorful pictures of Czech ladies dressed in beautiful Czech costumes (krojs) cut to shape a round box with lid attached and woven together with red yarn. Each piece is covered with clear plastic cut to fit inside and out. It is, over 40 years old and I can't remember who made it, but Marie Toberny's name comes to mind. Most Dallas Krouzek ladies did beautiful handiwork. The box is beautifully reflected on its shelf in the cabinet. A get will card was signed for Georgia Ann Kubala who was hospitalized July 22. Jerry Elzner delivered flowers from the Krouzek when he visited her. After two weeks, she was finally released. I am glad to report she is doing well. Jerry Elzner brought pictures he had taken at our July meeting. They were quite good. He also brought a picture of the newly restored farm house at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center and a postcard from Agnes Burge in the Czech Republic. We appreciated his sharing with us. I had also received picture postcards — one of a beautiful spa in Luhacovice. Jerry's pictured a man lying on a park bench captioned, "Smej se a svet se bude smat stebou. Chrapej a budes spat sam." The first sentence of the old saying is the same in English— "Smile and the world smiles with you." But I like the Czech version of the second sentence—"Snore and you sleep alone."
S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 2, Needville Observes National Nursing Home Week
Helen Kasparek and her daughter, Rhonda White, handed out invitations to our 10th anniversary celebration. Rhonda did a beautiful job on the cards. Members who were not present will receive theirs in the mail. September 15 is the cut-off date for paying for your lunch so our September meeting will be a good time to take care of this. Also, they are requesting you RSVP to Rhonda or Kathy Marek. Since our July meeting, several members did some traveling. Mary Foyt flew to Virginia to attend a wedding. Betty Jurica told us of the enjoyable time she, Frances and Cassie McDonald had in Cincinnati. Millie and Della Elzner are preparing to visit Millie's nieces in Cleveland later this month. "Happy Biithday" was sung to Donna Havranek and Pauline Novosad. Their pictures were taken and then our door prizes were handed out. To my surprise, I won a delicate, small ceramic box brought by Mary Elzner on one of her last trips to our meetings. I will treasure it as I treasure her friendship. Fraternally yours, Anna Marie Moss —SPJST-

District Five posts YAD results District Five Youth Achievement Day was held on Sunday, July 1 at Lodge 196, Houston-West. The results of the competition are as follows:
SPECIAL CATEGORY STATE WINNERS, L to R: Braxton Rico (185), Lindsey Jones (17), Trey Stolte (185) and Chase Jaroszewski (185).
Dear Youth of District One, I would like to send a special thank you to each of you for the wonderful gifts presented to me at District One Youth Achievement Day (YAD). I was so surprised. The charm bracelet is beautiful. For those of you who didn't get to see it it is silver with four charms, one from each youth club in the district. The 2001 charm wills remind me of the fantastic year District One has had We had a great camp, huge YAD and a wonderful trip to Schlitterbahn. The Number One charm reminds me that District One is Number One — not only in my mind, but in the State of Texas. We are Number One in number of active members, Number One in camp atten dance and Number One in YAD entries. The charm of the boy and girl will remind me of each and every one of the youth club members in District One — both past and present. All of you are very special to me. The heart charm will represent love — the love I have for each of you. I want you to know that I love each of you as if you were my own. I also appreciate the $50 gift certificate from Post Oak Mall. Although I , haven't spent it yet, I know that I will get something, that will always remind me of how special you made me feel at YAD. I wish each youth club the best of luck for the rest of the year. District One has such great leaders. Thanks to Holly Narro, Randy Gaas, Ann Schoenemann, Carla West, Sharon Russell, LaDonna Jatzlau, Marie Shelfer, Sharon Kovar, Binnie Roesler and Brenda Glowski. You are the best. You are, the ones that make District One Number One. Fraternally yours, Susan Skrabanek SPJST

Dear Vestnik,Readers, On the weekend of June 29 to July 1, 2001, 50 SPJST youth and adults from Lodge 4, Hallettsville; Lodge 30, Taiton; Lodge 32, Victoria; Lodge 40, El-Campo Hillje and Lodge 97, Placedo attended District Six summer camp at Camp Lone Star in La Grange. Joshua Siptak, Nicholas Vahalik, Chad Dorotik, Kirby Bubela, Kyle Kaspar, Jon Marcaurele served as Leaders-InTraining (LITs) for the camping weekend. These youth attended LIT retreat and were in charge of helping out with various responsibilities at camp, such as flag ceremonies, devotionals, party planning, games, dancing, and singing. The camp opened Friday afternoon with District Youth Counselor (DYC) Marcy Dorotik giving introductions, rules and cabin assignments. After everyone was settled in supper was served. Afterwards, the "Survivor Challenge" began. The first challenge of the weekend pitted four teams against each other in an attempt to battle their opponents off during war games. As the sun was setting, campers took to the lake for some canoeing and fishing Before closing, the canoeing session, the four Survivor teams challenged each other in a canoe race around the lake. Before going to
bed, we ended our day enjoying ice cream floats for refreshments and a night devotional. Saturday morning activities began with a hike down to one of the camp sites where campers sang some of their traditional and favorite camp songs. Campers then went swimming while others went fishing. After lunch, campers enjoyed making their own creative pictures with pre-cut pieces of felt, which they then glued to fabric which was attached to a rod for hanging. Afterwards, the youth enjoyed more swimming, canoeing and fishing. That afternoon, since it was hot, out we then enjoyed some watermelons donated by the Scholeman's watermelon farm. Thanks, Tommy for always providing those delicious watermelons for us. The remainder of the afternoon was spent with the teams competing in more Survivor Challenges such as dodge ball, tug-o-war, frisbee throw and relays. Saturday night, the LITs hosted a "Survivor" party around the swimming pool for the SPJST campers. To kick the party off, a limbo contest was held. Jessica Fucik won the contest earning her team more points towards the Survivor Challenge. The four teams then competed in an inner tube relay race in the pool. After the challenges were over, campers were allowed to swim, for the remainder of the party. Following the "Survivor" party around the pool, final Tribal Council was held out by the camp fire. Campers roasted marshmallows and made s'mores. The announcements were made has to who won the the "Survivor Challenge." Prizes were awarded to fourth, third, second and first place teams. Tommy Hilfiger beach towels were presented to the LITs for all their hard work they put forth during the camping weekend. We then had a very special devotional before going to bed, singing, "Kum-BaYa" and concluding with some special words and thank yous. Sunday morning breakfast was served, cabins were cleaned and everyone then departed for home. All and all District Six Camp was a huge success. District Six wants to thank our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny and her husband, David for visiting with us at camp. I would also like to thank District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom and his wife, Kathy for spending the day with us on Saturday. We really appreciated you coming and we hope you had a great time. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my chaperones who attended from District Six. Chaperones
were from Lodge 30, Taiton, Tommy Drapela, Yvonne Marcaurele, Nancy Fucik, Karen Kaspar; Lodge 4, Hallettsville, Susan Siptak, Mary Ann and Raymond Sustaita, Annie Vahalik, and Monica Vanek; Lodge 97, Placedo Donna and Dennis Vanek; and Lodge 32, Victoria Yvonne Horelka and Rodney Horelka. Without chaperones, we would not be able to attend camp and I want to thank all of you for giving up your weekend to be with us to help out with the campers. I would also like to give a very special thank you to State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates who attended this year's camp as our camp nurse. We really appreciate the fact that you were able to join us for the weekend as our nurse especially on such short notice. I know it's not an easy job attending to all the campers over the weekend, but you did a great job and we really appreciate your time to come and help us out in District Six. To my LITs — I have never worked with a finer group of people. All of you did an outstanding and marvelous job this year. I am so very proud of all of you for the time and dedication you put into camp. Without you, camp wouldn't have been the success that it was and I couldn't have done any of it without you. I look forward to seeing all of you next year. One very special thank you goes out to my new assistant, Lisa Bubela. You did a wonderful job helping me prepare for the camping weekend. Your wonderful spirit and loving attitude is always appreciated. To the youth of District Six—you all were a fabulous group of campers and I look forward to camp next year. I am glad you could all attend the camping weekend and I hope you all had a fun time. Thanks for all your smiles and enthusiasm. To the SPJST Society—thank you for giving the youth the opportunity to attend summer camp. It was a wonderfully fun learning experience for me when I was in the youth department and with your help, I will see that it is a great experience for our future generation SPJST youth. Our youth are the future and it is our responsibility to see to it they are given the best opportunities in life so that we can insure that our future generations even have a future. to folk, has a magic attraction, perhaps since the music binds families, children, their longings and dreams and for the older people who are profused with memories of their own youth. Music has always played a major role in the environment of Czech families whether it was a small family get-together, a wedding or a festival. Of course, a little dancing would go with the music which was a way for the Czechs to vent a little steam after a day's or week's hard work. Music to the Czech was a cure which would help overcome some of the difficulties encountered in their day-to-day living, and in particular, to those who were the early settlers in America and were starting a new life.
Even though Czechoslovakia (now Czech and Slovak Republics) is a small country in Central Europe, it has produced several world famous composers and those who are familiar with classical music, the names of Bedrich Smetana and Antonin Dvorak come to mind. Smetana's most famous opera is "The Bartered Bride" which is played in opera houses throughout the world. Dvorak was a violinist and performed at the Czech National Opera in Prague under Smetana. He composed "Symphony No. 9 From The New World" which is world famous. Those who prefer a more lively beat of marches, polkas, and waltzes a Czech songwriter which could be world famous is Jaromir Vejvoda. Vejvoda wrote "Skoda Lasky" and to us is more familiar as "The Beer Barrel Polka". (To Be Continued.) —SPJST-

17, New Tabor Youth Club enjoys productive summer Lodge
Dear Readers, The Lodge 17 Youth Club has been very busy this summer. We started out the summer with a hot dog supper and swimming party. We had three new members — Coy Cass, Logan Jones and Tyler Sandner. They are all going to turn six this year. It's good to have boys joining our club. We then started working on our Youth Achievement Day (YAD) projects. We had two group talents for YAD — a junior and senior group. I was in the Junior Group Talent. I played the part of Mr. R.V. Frisbee in a skit called "I Saw Elvis in a UFO." We practiced every week and sometimes twice a week. We won first place at district. I entered five crafts and, won first place in Needlework, Foods, Science and Education and Handicraft. I also got third place in Individual Talent. Also winning first place from Lodge 17 was Lindsey Jones in Sewing and Lacy Jones in Constructed Items. Grace Dusek won first in Individual Talent. We also had a lot of second and third place winners. Our scrapbook and poster both won first place. I got first place Junior from Lodge 17. Lacy and Lindsey Jones and Chandler Malazzo also got first place juniors. Kathryn and Kimberly Skrabanek, Mark and Robby Havens and Shelby Norman got third place juniors. Mabrey Petty and Crystal Wotipka were first place Seniors. Twenty-three youth from New Tabor went to District One camp this year. It was July 9-12, 2001 at Camp Val Verde. Boy, were we surprised at
the dining hall. It was all fixed up — even had air conditioning. We made kites for crafts and then got to fly them. David, aka "Goat Man" told some good stories the last night of camp down at the river. We also had a scary night hike. On August 1, 2001, District One took their summer trip to Schlitterbahn. We took three Coach USA buses. We all had fun playing in the three different parks. I liked the old park best. By the time this letter is in the Vestnik, we will have had State YAD. I am in the Beseda circle, group talent, craft and special category competition. Fraternally, Kyle Skrabanek (12) 8/15/01 --SP.IST--

is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique of the stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka and sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage.
