Guaranteed life insurance coverage available to current members for a limited time D o you have a total of $5,000 or less SPJST insurance? If so, look in your mailbox. You'll soon be receiving information from SPJST about additional "Guaranteed" insurance that you can purchase in amounts of $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 or $5,000 of coverage. Each letter is personalized with premiums based on the member's current age. According to Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, quite a few SPJST members have $5,000 or less insurance and which is not enough in today's world for funeral and final expenses. Because of this, SPJST is making a special offer available to those members and offer additional "guaranteed" insurance. This coverage is available regardless of their past or current health. Members have 120 days from the date of the letter to respond. No Waiting Period Another unique feature is that there is no waiting period for full coverage unlike some companies that require the certificate be in force for two or three years before the full death bene fit is available. "We've had members call us that have received the letter asking if there is a waiting period. There is none. The full death benefit is in effect after we receive the first full premium in the Home Office. The premiums are based on smoker/non-smoker and male/female categories," according to McBride. "We've had several members call in and ask how we can make such an

opportunity available since it requires no medical or health questions. My response is that the offer is only available to SPJST members only." McBride says that if you're an SPJST member, have $5,000 or less insurance and haven't received your letter yet, don't worry. All members will be receiving one soon. However, if you've already received your letter and have misplaced it or have questions, call the Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and they'll assist you. According to McBride, this a valuable opportunity that our members deserve to take advantage of and here's a summary of the offer available: SPJST Guaranteed Life Insurance • Available to SPJST Members only and those with a total of $5,000 or less insurance • Insurance Amounts $2,000, $3,000, $4,000 and $5,000 'Member has 120 days to purchase additional insurance from receipt of letter 'Premium based on male/female and smoker/non-smoker rates • No medical required • Available regardless of your past or present health • Only available to Texas residents Certificate contains two-year suicide clause. On the Road With SPJST The SPJST kicked off its fledgling travel program on July 25 with a mid-week get-away to the Isle of Capri Casino in Bossier City Louisiana. Forty members and guests representing eight SPJST lodges enjoyed the outing which included an overnight stay. SPJST travelers looking for a more exotic destination are encouraged to see page seven for details on a cruise departing from Galveston for five nights going to Cozumel and Calic/Cancun. What a Christmas gift that would make for someone special on your list!

You're a Key Player As fate would have it, I was at the Ballpark in Arlington last Saturday to see the Texas Rangers take on the Boston Red Sox. In spite of the fact that Texas is in the cellar of their division - 36 games out of first place it was a good game and one for the record books. Thanks to a spectacular defense on the part of the Rangers and persistent offense from both sides, the game went on for 18 innings six hours and 35 minutes - making it the longest game in Ranger history and the longest game in the Major Leagues this season. The game finally ended in the bottom of the 18th with a base hit by the Rangers' Bill Hasselmann, bringing in Chad Curtis from third for the winning score Rangers 8 - Red Sox 7. If nothing else, the match-up offers a wonderful testament to the power of perseverance: There's an awful lot to be said for perseverance. One of the keys to being successful at anything is staying power. Once you have determined exactly what it is that you or your lodge want to accomplish, it takes

action on a consistent, persistent basis in order to succeed. It's like that in baseball. It's like that in life. Every issue of the Vestnik seeks to promote the virtues of SPJST fraternal activities, life insurance, annuities and mortgage loans. It's good information; however, words alone are seldom enough. It takes the human touch like Hasselmann's hit in the 18th to get the job done. In the SPJST, the human touch can be applied in a variety of ways: One of the best ways is when active members and sales representatives talk to current and prospective members about the benefits of membership. With four months left to go in 2001, we're fast approaching the "seventh inning stretch" of the SPJST's Mission 2100 Membership Drive. Now, let's stick with it, play hard and make something good happen. Your continued effort to spread the good word about membership in the SPJST can and will make a positive difference in your lodge, in your community and in the growth of our Society. -SPJST-

Milady Malcik (Continued from page 1.) Sister Malcik has been a member of Lodge 47, Seaton since 1923. Many members of her family are also longtime SPJST members. Many of Sister Malcik's favorite memories relate back to her love of Czech music and dancing. Her father and brother were both musicians and played in local bands. "Sometimes we would walk a long way to a `house dance,' " she says. " On our way, we would be joined by our friends and neighbors. Before you knew it, it became a fairly large

group. We visited and talked and had a wonderful time. Sure brings back memories of good old days." In addition to the house dances, Sister Malcik has many fond recollections of "getting together with friends and playing '42' and canasta." Sister Malcik now lives in Cameron, Texas. Favorite pasttimes include doing crossword puzzles and watching television game shows and her other programs. She also enjoys reading all of the surrounding newspapers and keeping up with the news and people around her. Once again, the SPJST salutes and Sister Malcik on achieving the "Grand Age of 96." —SPJST-

Family Protection for Less than $2 Per Day? Here's How. If it's been a while since you bought life insurance, you may be in for a pleasant surprise! The cost per thousand dollars worth of coverage has decreased considerably from where it was just a few years ago. In evaluating your family's needs, SPJST's Modterm Program may be what you're looking for. Both 10-year and 20-year plans can be purchased in varying amounts to fit your special needs. Since it was introduced in 1994, SPJST's Modterm — short for "Modified Term" insurance has been one of our most popular insurance programs. And for good reason, the 10-year Modterm certificate carries with it an "age enhancement option" that allows the certificate holder to double coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date at the original premium rate. To find out more about the 10- or 20-year Modterm certificates and how they may fit in with your needs, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

District Four Youth Counselor posts resuls of record-setting YAD Dear Readers, A record-setting District Four Youth Achievement Day (YAD) was held at the St. Ambrose Hall in Wall on July 8. The 22 youth club members from Lodge 160 and Lodge 215 were just awesome with all of the talent they portrayed on this day. These youth had entries in the king/duke royalty contest, twelve talent entries and 82 craft entries. I am so proud of each one of you. You are definitely all winners! This was also the very first YAD for the youth from Lodge 215 as participants. I appreciate you making the three-hour trip to enter your crafts and various talent entries. It was so nice to have you with us. We had the honor of having President Howard Leshikar, State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates and District Four Director Stanley Broz in attendance with us. It means a great deal to all of the youth to have your support. I also appreciate your assisting me with YAD. My thanks to all district and lodge officers, grandparents, parents and friends who came to watch the performances. The children gain so much from this contest and love to perform for you and show you their crafts. My special thanks goes to Betty Schwartz for assisting me with YAD. You are always there to help set up, clean up, and assist where needed. Thanks also to all of the parents of the youth club members who helped make the day a success. Your time in getting everyone to talent practice and making sure the craft items are completed is appreciated. I also appreciate Janeece Williams for all of her hard work in getting the new youth club at Tahoka rolling. You are doing a great job! My greatest thanks go to the youth of District Four for participating in YAD. I know that it takes a lot of your time to prepare your entries and I commend you for doing it. You are all very talented. I wish the best of luck to all of the first place winners at State YAD. Fraternally, Sandra Jansa District Four Youth Counselor ---SPJST-

Lodge 6, Cottonwood youth club maintains busy schedule Dear SPJST Vestnik Readers, This month has started out to be a busy month right from the beginning. The first thing we did was to take cakes to the nursing home for the birthday party. We had dinner together at West Station cafe. It was great. Second, we went to State Youth Achievement Day (YAD). We had a great time at state YAD. Everyone did a good job. I won first place with my science project. Congratulations to all the winners! Third, I went to Peaceable Kingdom for a lock in. Both of these activities were fun and I would like to thank everyone who made them possible! The last thing we will be doing this month is baking kolaches for Westfest on August 25. Hope to see you all there! Fraternally yours, Brooke Craig, 13 8/29/01 (Editor's Note: Brooke's letters — dated August 17 and August 23 — were combined in the previous letter) —SPJST-

Dear Readers, Lodge 13, Dime Box held its monthly meeting August 12, 2001. Vestnik projects and contests were completed. We started the meeting with with Taylor Jatzlau leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Last month's minutes were approved. Anybody missing that meeting were asked to fill out the Code of Conduct forms. School supplies were collected for our charity of the month. If you forgot to bring them, you still have time to give them to Ms. Carla. Community Service Project Next month, we will be collecting items to take to the nursing home. Toiletry items are good or how about a deck of cards or stationary pad and a pen. Three of our members, Justin, Marc and Matthew Klecak grandmother had gall bladder surgery. Everybody present signed a get well card for Mrs. Walker. We wish you a healthy recovery. The names of the winners at State Youth Achievement Day were called. Congratulations! Mrs. Carla asked that all group talent practice dates be turned in to her so she can give you your points. A special note: We at Lodge 13 were honored to have our backdrop from our District One YAD be displayed at State YAD. On September 2, 2001, the Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department will host its annual Labor Day Picnic. Mrs. Carla or Mrs LaDonna will be calling you for your appointed time to work. Let's go out there and support our SPJST Youth Club and the Fire Department. See you there. Next Meeting September 9 Our next meeting will be September 9, 2001. Besides the meeting, we will decorate the hall for our District Lock-in which will be held here on October 26, 2001. Then on October 27, 2001, we will participate in the "Make A Difference Day". For this, we will go to the SPJST Cemetery on Highway 21 to clean up. Also mentioned at the meeting, anyone who participated in single talent or who did group talent at YAD and who would like to perform it at the Dime Box Homecoming in October, needs to let Mrs. Carla know so she can get the Dime Box Homecoming Committee to schedule it into the day's events. Tracing the History of Czech Music By Kimberly Gaas PART II Here in Texas — where there are many Czech communities and Czech is the third most spoken language in the state — music has played a key role. Going as far back as the 1850s, many of the early Czech settlers were good musicians and some families formed bands which provided entertainment to festivities such as weddings, church picnics and town festivals. One of the early bands was Ray Baca out of Fayetteville, Texas and their style of music was marches, polka and waltzes. Another band that originated almost 150 years ago was the Krenek Orchestra and founded in Pisek, Texas near Fayetteville. In later years, this band was known as the Ray Krenek Band and played polkas and waltzes. Currently, one of the most popular bands in the state of Texas is the Leo Majek Orchestra from Corpus Christi. They have been in existence for over 95 years and are in high demand to perform at various festivities throughout the state. Other popular bands that perform throughout the state are the Leroy Matocha Orchestra, Jodie Mikula Orchestra, Sil Krenek Orchestra, Bobby Jones Czech Band, The City Polka Boys, The Vrazel Polka Band and The Krenek's and The Texas Sounds. In Texas, Czech music continues to thrive and Czech traditions are still carried out. So, if you are ever in our area, pull up a chair and listen to a good polka or waltz. Make a Difference

What a Character!

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking up something and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the boy, he asked, "What are you doing?" The youth replied, "Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them back, they'll die." "Son," the man said, "don't you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can't possibly make a difference!" After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said . . . "I made a difference for that one."

Find all the characters from the Word Box in the word search puzzle. The lucky winner of the Mission 2100 Disney World trip will probably see all of these characters at Disney World!

List five ways how you can make a difference in the SPJST.

is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique of the stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka and sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage.

We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability, to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 4111111P•t-1.!AIWA. 1111011111f
