15, Buckholts brothers to receive music award
SPJST Lodge 15, Buckholts brothers Alfred and Anton Vrazel of the Yarreliton-Marak communities near Cameron, Texas have been named as the recipients of the 2001 World Of Music Hall of Fame Award. The Vrazels have been making music for nearly half a century as Vrazels' Polka Band, playing their unique style of polka and entertaining audiences all over the United States. Joseph Cerveny, a director of the World of Music Hall of Fame, made the announcement of the award last month. "We feel that Alfred and Anton Vrazel are one of the finest in polka music entertainment. They are lifelong musicians with a love of polka and a deep appreciation for their fans. The Vrazels are the epitome of what this award is all about—an honest love of polka and of polka fans. And they reward their loyal fans with the best of old-world polka music." Alfred Vrazel was just ten years old when he talked his parents into buying
him his first accordion. Shortly thereafter, Anton started playing the piano accordion and Alfred switched to playing the tenor and alto saxophones and guitar. Soon, a polka band was born. It's A Long Story The band was originally known as "Vrazels' Playboys" and consisted of Alfred, Anton and their three cousins, Leo, Louis and Ladis Vrazel They began playing at small stores and halls such as: The Oscar Store near Temple; Three Oaks near Cameron; Country Bar & Grocery Store in Marak; Otto's Place in Taylor; The Wagon Wheel Inn in Beyersville; Tom Sefcik Hall in Seaton and SPJST Hall in Buckholts. Some of their first engagements generated no regular salary, just small donations from appreciative listeners and dancers. Only two years after the band was formed, Radio Station KMIL 1330 AM in Cameron, Texas was established and the Vrazels were hired for
Sunday afternoon programs, which were done live and unrehearsed. Initially, only 30 minutes long, the program was increased to one hour, 45 minutes. Now in its 46th year of continuous brOadcasting, the show can still be heard every Sunday afternoon on KMIL 1330 AM radio. Throughout the years, the band has recorded twenty 45 rpm records, 13 albums, two videos, six cassettes and two compact disks. Their Czech music repertoire is very extensive. "Alfred and Anton share their gift with their fans in any and all media they can. They realize that some fans may not have access to one form o their music,so they have made it available in several ways," says Cerveny. The Vrazel Polka Band motto, "Playing for our Friends," is fitting for this group of musicians. The men feel very close to their audience when they play, playing for the people who are listening and not for themselves. (Continued on page 2.)
Alfred and Anton Vrazel will be awarded the 2001 World of Music Hall of Fame Award at the 2001 Grand Polka Festival which takes place in Las Vegas Septemer 9 and 10.

State Youth Director expresses thanks to State YAD, Royalty volunteers, judges Dear Members and Friends, This year's State Youth Achievement Day was held Saturday, August 4. It was a wonderful day. Approximately 350 youth competed for almost 200 trophies and awards in 15 categories. Entries in this year's State YAD numbered more than 700—the largest count ever. For the first time since the 1980s, State YAD was held on one day. And for the first time ever, the event was held on a Saturday. The day began with registration at 10 a.m. to allow travelers from around the state extra time to drive in. Following opening ceremonies, youth participated in talent competition. Then, the day broke for the youth to participate in the special category contest. For this year's contest, each participant was given a brown paper bag that contained an assortment of 12 pipecleaners and a display plate. The only instructions the participants received were to create something from the pipecleaners and display it on the plate. All designs were certainly unique. They ranged from rainbows to cowboys to people to SPJST designs. Several of the creations will be displayed in the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum until next year's State YAD. In the main hall, SPJST's own Melissa Hubenak entertained guests with her beautiful voice. Melissa recently released a CD. She is a country/western music performer who participated in the youth program. She is a member of Lodge 92, Fort Worth. The royalty competition followed the special category. Six kings and six queens vied for the prestigious state crowns. After the speech competitions, the royalty judges were introduced: 2001 Miss Austin USA Mandy Jeffreys, Kel Gleason from the CBS Survivor television series and two-time Emmy award winner Steven Chudej. Many attendees took photographs and got autographs of our celebrity judges. The awards ceremony concluded the day. Congratulations to all participants. You made it to the state competition. That is awesome! I am so proud of you. State YAD is always an exciting day for our young people. These youth spend countless hours preparing for their contests. And all of the hard work really shows at state. All of this year's contests— crafts, talent, scrapbook, poster and
royalty—featured absolutely outstanding entries. Our SPJST youth are dynamic! Thanks to the many volunteers who helped at State YAD this year. It was a big success because of a dedicated team of individuals. Thanks so very much to the following:

Lodge 87, Temple reports on July, August meetings July Meeting The monthly meeting began at 7 p.m. on July 10, 2001. Only nine members were in attendance for our July meeting, however, the melons which were consumed at our watermelon supper, disappeared as though we had 30 members on hand! That made up for our slim attendance. August Meeting The monthly meeting began at 7 p.m. on August 14, 2001. Nineteen members and two visitors were on hand to enjoy a great ice cream supper along with some tasty sandwiches and brownies. Our business meeting reflected the financial status of our lodge and it was great to welcome back Sid Kacir after his period in the hospital! Lodge rentals were discussed, along with the improved condition of our building structure. Our next meeting will be September 11. Fraternally, John W. Troy, Reporter —SPJST-
88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge
I had the most happy report from our very efficient Blue Room Chairlady Patricia (Pat) Bruce about the Blue Room Party! There was very good attendance, good music (Bobby Jones), good food and everyone was having a good time. So great a time they had, some were asking when the next Blue Room Party would be! After a beautiful wedding in France, Jeffrey Barcak, son of Georgia and Gene Barcak, and his lovely bride, Celine Bru of France, had a wonderful reception at Lodge 196, Houston-West. There were many happy guests, much good food and drinks, and everybody having a great time! We wish the couple many years of happiness! We had the pleasure of being at Leroy and Birdie Brogdon's table and surely enjoyed that. We can start thinking about a great day coming up in October—the Lodge Czech Day. There will be a Battle Dance with Harry Czarnek and the Melodion Band from the Czech Republic; isn't that great! At our meetings, we are missing Brother William Souchek, who had taught Czech for many years at our lodge. He was a great teacher and all enjoyed his classes. I was surprised and delighted to see the picture of Lodge 8, Weimar in the Weimar Mercury! It showed President Leo Jares giving a 50-year pin to Evelyn Shumbera and Rosie Shumbera looking on. Congratulations, Lodge 8, you are growing! Get well wishes go to Georgia Mae Lincke, Bob Allbritton, Nate Gonzales, Leland Hensley who is in rehabilitation and Agnes Haney who

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Presents Scenes from District Three Camp July 13-16, 2001 Camp Val Verde Mc Gregor, Texas Pictured here, enjoying a cool dip in the camp pool, are, from left, McKenzie Turner, Bryson Turner, Alexa Hubenak, Kassandra Perez and Lodge 92 Assistant Youth Leader Teri Turner-Perez. The theme for this year's camp centered around "survival" games, popularized by the television series of the same name. Even with planned activities, there was plenty of time to play around and just have fun as this group in front of the flag pole is finding.
Leaders-inTraining (LITs) play an important part in making the camping experience both pleasurable and memorable. Pictured here, District Three LITs Jamie Lyn Novak and Amber May share in the good times.
Following a round of survival challenges, it sure was nice to take a refreshing break. Pictured here, Jerry and Max prepare snow cones.

84, Dallas Youth Club member enjoys YAD, trip to Peaceable Kingdom Lodge
Dear Vestnik Reader: I can't believe it! We won first place for our group talent dance at State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) in Temple on August 4. How exciting that was to be standing in front of the judge one moment and a few hours later holding a first place trophy. Boy, was I happy! Now, I really cannot wait until next year's YAD contests. I also would like to thank all of the state SPJST staff for the wonderful time my Mom and I had at Peaceable Kingdom on August 11 and 12. We went on a hiking trail and I found a bunch of little frogs down by the river. We also had a scavenger hunt and we boys found everything on the list except for one. My mom and I colored a cloth of an ocean scene with crayons and used glitter to decorate it. It now hangs in my bathroom. The movie theater was great (my Mom wants one of these in her backyard). I was able to play video game without having to deposit money. Awesome! We also went swimming in the evening then went back to the theater to play more video games. I was dead tired by the time I went to bed at midnight. I hope next year's state camp will be held at Peaceable Kingdom again. I really had a good time. Now I'm looking forward to dancing the Beseda at the State Fair of Texas in October with the other junior youth members. Fraternally, David R. Oberle, Jr., age 6 9/5/01 (Editor's Note: Watch for related photos in next week's photos. Thanks for your kind attention.) —SPJST-

books available Dr. Joseph Simicek who is a historian about the peoples' immigration from Moravia to Texas has completed a new book on the Towns of Frenstat and Trojanovice and the people who left from there to go to Texas. He has also revised his book on the Villages of Lichnov and Bordovice in which he has added new information on the history of the immigration and other interesting data. Both of these books are a must have for people who are interested in the migration of Moravian people to Texas. The name of the new book which has the towns of Frenstat and Trojanovice is "Pilgrims for Hope Volume II” and this book is rather heavy, weighing about two and one half pounds. The cost of this book is $33 and an additional $7 for shipping and handling for a total of $40. The name of the revised book is "Hope Has Name - Texas" and the cost of this book is $20 and an additional $5.08 for shipping and handling or a total of $25. The book "Pilgrims for Hope Volume I" is still also available for $20 and an additional $5 for shipping and handling for a total of $25. This book is about the immigration from the villages of Mnisi, Ticha and Vlcovice. To order any of these books send a Certified Cheek to: MuDR Joseph Simicek, 742 75 Lichnov, Czech Republic and the Doctor will send you the books ordered. If you order as many as ten books of any one book, there will be no shipping or handling charge. If your family came from any of these town and villages, your family history may be in these books as each contains the names of many settlers who came to Texas. If you want to know, call Louis J. Polansky (979) 378-2231 and he will look it up for you. Just leave your name and phone number and he will call you back. Submitted by, Louis Polansky Lodge 1, Fayetteville —SPJST-

is a celebration of the revitalization ► ofarbe of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique of the stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka and sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage.
