We are all deeply moved and concerned about the tragic events of September 11, 2001 in New York, Washington, D.C., and Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Our hearts go out to the loved ones who have lost family and friends. Our thanks go to those who help us recover and who protect us and our ideals.

Fraternals proceed with 115th annual meeting In the wake of the terrible events that unfolded last Tuesday, the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA) management team gathered last week to discuss plans for the 115th NFCA Annual Meeting, September 19-22, in Orlando/Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Founded in 1886, the NFCA is the national trade association for 83 member societies and 36 state fraternal congresses. The SPJST is a member of the NFCA. "Our number one concern is the safety of our guests as they travel from all over the country," says NFCA Fraternal and Communications Manager Anthony Snyder "Many individuals, no doubt, are considering whether now is the right time for airline travel following the tragic loss of four commercial aircraft." "NFCA has consulted with the Hilton in the Walt Disney World Village to determine the status of the hotel property. A small number of groups that planned to hold meetings there last week were canceled, primarily due to the airline stoppage which prohibited attendees from traveling. However, hotel representatives have assured us that the hotel and Disney properties are in operation today and
will continue to operate, barring any unforeseen circumstances," says Mr. Snyder. "Unless there are future developments which would halt airline travel this week or if authorities indicate the safety of travelers is in jeopardy, the 115th NFCA Annual Meeting, and all scheduled outings, programs and presentations will take place," he says. SPJST Leaders Involved SPJST representatives scheduled to participate in the four-day annual meeting include Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride, Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, District One Director Donnie Victorick, District Five Director Larry Pflughaupt and District Six Director Mike Ahlstrom. Vice President McBride is presently serving as President of the Fraternal Field Managers Association (FFMA), which oversees and provides direction for the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counselors (NAFIC). "The FFMA includes sales and marketing personnel from large and small fraternals," explains Brother McBride. "Working together, we
mon-
itor and exchange information of issues important to all of our members. Topping the FFMA meeting agenda this week in Florida will be the development of a new training program for fraternal field managers. Rising to the Occasion "Our hearts and prayers are with those touched by the events of September 11. Although we must move on, we do so with heavy hearts. It seems fitting that the NFCA membership, an association of organizations that exist to improve life in this world, will come together after this national nightmare . . . we will join hands to begin the healing," says Mr. Snyder. Already, according to Mr. Snyder, many of the nation's fraternals have risen to the occasion and are deeply engaged in activities to aid the disaster scenes in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania or are offering opportunities to begin the healing. For example: • Catholic Life Insurance raised its five-story U.S. flag and held a public mass at its San Antonio Home Office on September 14 in honor of the National Day of Prayer.
Polish National Union of America encouraged its staff members to give blood yesterday in a show of support. • Aid Association for Lutherans has offered $1 million to assist people on the East Coast. The released funds will be used to mobilize AAL members and branches to help disaster victims through fundraising. • Lutheran Brotherhood has made available more than $360,000 to its branches to assist in disaster relief. • Woodmen of the World Omaha/Woodmen Woodmen Life Insurance Society donated 7,000 hand-held flags to be distributed at Omaha malls and local grocery stores to people who donate to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. "We applaud the good works of our sister fraternal societies," says Brother McBride, who helped organize the SPJST's recent Houston flood relief effort. "It's inspiring and it's what fraternalism is all about." —SPJST-

Freedom Is A Wide Road Americans Rally The tragic events of last week — namely the deaths of thousands of Americans in terrorist attacks — have provided a rallying point for the American people freedom-loving nations of the world. Here — in Texas — as in other parts of the country, the blinding explosions in the Northeast brought home the realiza tion that domestic tranquility and personal freedom are more precious than diamonds or gold. Looking back — just in my lifetime — there have been so many times when our nation has been at odds with itself — challenging elements of our cultural, religious and racial diversity, rather than seeking to celebrate the freedom that made it possible. Even casual differences — over preferences in hairstyle, music and dress — have at times been cause for division within our ranks. These differences pale in the light of defending our domestic peace and freedom. Indeed, freedom in America is a wide road. The U.S. Constitution guarantees us a constellation of civil liberties and rights. Think about it. We're a nation big enough to accommodate a broad spectrum of political ideologies and personal lifestyles. Broad enough to include a lot of things — but not terrorism. Freedom, like fraternalism — is a glorious idea and a way of life. The challenge has been put to our generation to see that it endures and remains strong. May we rise to the challenge.
that just last week in a conversation with Wal-Mart's corporate offices. According to Wal-Mart, the program didn't generate the amount of community involvement that they were hoping to see. Please note that doesn't mean that Wal-Mart isn't ready to help with a good cause. In fact, I was informed that groups seeking to assist 501 (c) (3) charitable groups — or government-sponsored groups — may contact local store managers and inquire about their Bonus Grant program. This is a national program that enables local Wal-Mart managers to evaluate local projects and offer assistance, based on the individual merit of the project. So, if your lodge is considering a Make a Difference Day project on October 27, please keep Wal-Mart in mind. They may be able to help — especially if you're seeking to assist a qualified charitable group. To that extent, please keep the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in mind. It is a qualified 501 (c)(3) charity and its directors encourage lodges and youth clubs to get involved in projects that will promote and support its development. "We want to see the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum fully utilized as an educational tool," says LAM Treasurer Margaret Haisler. "What better time than during Czech Heritage Month to raise an awareness of our Texas forefathers and mothers." Details on how to get your lodge or youth group involved in Make a Difference Day are available from the Make a Difference Day website (www.usawekend.com/diffday/index . html). If you don't have Internet access, please contact the Vestnik Office or State Youth Director's Office at (800) 727-7578 and we will provide you with additional information.
The challenge has been put to our generation to see that freedom endures and remains strong.
Wal-Mart Offering Bonus Grants Wal-Mart is no longer a corporate player in the National Make a Difference Day program. In past years, managers of Wal-Mart's more than 2,300 stores each had $1,000 in grants to help fund local Make a Difference Day projects. I learned

On a much grander scale, Americans unite to confront the force that attacked this great land known as America. However, we do not stand alone. Koudelka is a friend to many of us and I believe he expressed the love of our family and friends in the Czech Republic when in part of his message he wrote, "Bells in our country will be ringing at noon and I will be standing with the right hand on my heart and thinking of you and your sorrow. In evaluating your family's needs, SPJST's Modterm Program may be what you're looking for. Both 10-year and 20-year plans can be purchased in Varying amounts to fit your special needs. Since it was introduced in 1994, SPJST's Modterm short for "Modified Term" insurance has been one of our most popular insurance programs. And for good reason, the 10-year Modterm certificate carries with it an "age enhancement option" that allows the certificate holder to double coverage at any time between the second and ninth year of the Modterm issue date at the original premium rate. To find out more about the 10- or 20-year Modterm certificates and how they may fit in with your needs, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

Lodge 6, Cottonwood grandparents enjoy luau, courtesy of the Youth Club Hi! Those of you that were unable to attend, you sure missed a "grand" Grandparent's Day Luncheon at Lodge 6, Cottonwood on Sunday, September 9. This luncheon was done by the Lodge 6, Cottonwood, Youth Club. These kids and their youth leader, Sister Peggy Dobecka, did a great job, along with the help of some parents. They really put on a beautiful luncheon. Their theme was Hawaiian with the luau being Italian style. We were served spaghetti, lasagna, salad, corn and garlic bread. Afterwards, we could all enjoy the delicious desserts that they prepared for us. They had some very good yummy banana pudding (my favorite). They presented leis to all the grandparents, which we were all wearing. They served iced tea at the luncheon and had them placed at all seating areas for everyone. The tea was served in beautiful colorful glasses to go along with their Hawaiian theme, and we all got to take our glass home as a keepsake. Thanks a whole bunch to all the Lodge 6, Cottonwood Youth Club for a very good delicious meal and for the leis and drinking glasses. All of us grandparents, as well as others, enjoyed the day. He reported that they would be working on the roof of the hall. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served. August 27 Meeting Vice President Zimmerhazel reported that we have someone who will be doing the floors and repairs on some of the windows in the hall. Work is continuing on the roof of the hall. Leshikar, Gene McBride, Gladys Yates, Mike Ahlstrom, and Melanie Zavodny. Cindy Anderson, our new Sales Rep. was also present. The minutes were read from the July meeting and accepted. The financial report was brought up to date. It was also accepted. It was also voted to get rid of the miscellaneous paper work that was over ten years old. It was noted that Michael Anderson has been reinstated as a certificate holder and lodge member. There was a mix up with his policy and thanks to Mike Ahlstrom and the Home Office it has been corrected. We are glad to have you back, Michael. Howard Leshikar announced that Lodge 148 would be receiving its $500 incentive check for having monthly meetings. He also congratulated Lodge 148 for going to monthly meetings and starting a youth club. He also suggested that each person attending the meeting call five people and remind them to attend the next meeting. This type of trend would greatly increase attendance at all lodge meetings. Gene McBride reminded everyone that the lodge needs to meet its quota of ten certificates. Melanie Zavodny congratulated Lodge 148 for the new Youth Club. The first member of the Youth Club, Andrew Zielonka, was present and introduced. Mike Ahlstrom wanted to point out that SPJST is dedicated to helping each lodge grow.

Yearly dues were increased from $5 to $7 and the price of guest meals increased from $3 to $4. After "Happy Birthday" was sung to Clarice Marek and Lil Hruska, a special tribute was paid to Lil Hruska who turned 90 on September 8. It is hard to believe Lil is 90 as she looks many years younger. Her daughter, Evelyn, saw to it that Lil attended our meeting so we could surprise her. Lil was presented with the Kentucky Colonel Award, a certificate, a lovely personal letter from Governor Rick Perry, birthday cards from her grandchildren and numerous friends and a special card signed by our members along with a monetary gift. She was also presented with a huge personalized birthday cake and two longstemmed red rose buds. Don't know who was happier—Lil or Evelyn. The rest of us were happy for her, too. Lil is our fifth member to turn 90 and we have tried to make each feel special on the momentous occasion because they were. Looking forward to our 10th anniversary. I remain ... Vlasta Chaloupka Machann, 86, of Pasadena, Texas, left her earthly home on Sunday, September 2, 2001 after a brief battle with cancer. Born December 22, 1914 near Caldwell, Texas, in Burleson, County to Czech immigrant Joe Chaloupka and his wife, Anna God, she grew up in the home of her Godfather Emil Lesikar after her mother died in 1915. Diligent to learn English and determined to make something of her life, Vlasta worked her way through San Marcos State Teachers College and began a lifelong teaching career. Like many of her generation, she lost her beloved husband, Henry Machann in the war in 1944, but married his cousin, Joe Machann, at the war's end in 1946. Settling in the industrial two on Pasadena, Mrs. Machann taught art to thousands of young people and shared her vision with the entire school. She and her students transformed uninspiring, institutional walls and ceilings, creating a pumpkin farm in fall or perhaps a snowstorm in winter, making magic with paper and paint. A founding member of Pasadena Brethren Church, SPJST Lodge 172, and Zeta Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, she volunteered her talent and incredible energy in service to God, family and community. She practiced generous hospitality to friends and strangers, offering them all a home filled with art, good Czech cooking and love. Never complaining, never a gossip, never expecting thanks, Vlasta was especially sensitive to people in need of a family, opening her home for a night, a month or year. Her daughter, Betty Jo (B.J.) Yonley and her husband, Bill enjoyed traveling with her on every family vacation, while Bill patiently helped her with her garden after her husband, Joe Machann's death. Daughter, Donna Fowler, and her husband, Joe, pampered her with food and fun in her visits to their home in Austin. Beloved niece, Mary Jane Foley of Lafayette, Colorado will miss her unconditional love, as will grandchildren, Tommy, William Lori Anna and Jonathan Yonley and Brittany and Amber Fowler. Her surviving sisters are Adele Stephenson, Albina Dornhoefer, Rosie Wilde, Mary Kaulfus, Agnes Love and Clara Kramer. Memorial services were held on Wednesday, September 5 at 7 p.m. at Pasadena Brethren Church with reception following the service. Funeral services were on Thursday, September 6 at 3 p.m. at New Tabor Brethren Church, Caldwell, Texas. Interment was in Old New Tabor Cemetery, Caldwell, Texas.

National Grandparent's Day
Family
o:

The first Sunday after Labor Day has been declared National Grandparents Day in the United States. The proclamation for the holiday was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1978. The September date was chosen to signify the "autumn years" of life. The holiday has three purposes:
Grandparents are our heritage and are essential members of our families and communities. That is why a special day, National Grandparent's Day, is set aside every year to honor grandparents. Please complete the family tree below.
• To honor grandparents everywhere. • To give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children. • To help children become aware of the strength, information and guidance older people can offer.

My Mother
How did Grandparent's Day come into being? In 1970, Marian McQuade of West Virginia decided that there should be a special day for grandparents. Marian had very personal experiences with the trials, tribulations and joys of grandparenting. The parents of 15 children, she and her husband Joe were grandparents to 40 grandchildren (now ranging in age from 38 to infants). In 1973, with assistance from Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV), the very first day celebrating grandparents was proclaimed by then Governor of West Virginia, Arch Moore. Senator Randolph then introduced a resolution for a National Grandparents Day and the rest is history!

Lodge 40, El Campo-Hillje Youth Club reports on September meeting El Campo-Hillje Lodge 40 Youth Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, September 9, 2001 at 1:15 p.m. at the lodge hall. The youth leader, Mrs. Bacak asked all of the youth to come out and help at the ring toss booth at the Barbecue Cookoff and Children's Fall Festival on Saturday, September 15, 2001 at the Hillje Hall. Youth Club President Cory Cerny called the meeting to order. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. All of the officers were present. Mrs. Bacak, our Youth Leader, welcomed all of the members, guest and moms who were present. Everyone had a fantastic time using colored markers to color great big butter-
flies and then cutting them out and backing them with bright colored construction paper. They turned out beautiful. The youth also did Grandparent's Day cards to take to the nursing home. Some of the youth made their very special one for their own grandpa and grandma. Sunday, September 9 was National Grandparent's Day. After our meeting, the children entertained the adults at their meeting with two songs. They were "She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain and "September". They did a super job. I am so proud of you kids. After the meeting, the youth enjoyed refreshments brought by Cory Cerny, Donna Martinez and Ashley Sczech. Our Youth Club Meetings are held on the second Sunday of each month at 1:15 p.m. Fraternally, Ardis Bacak, FIC Youth Leader —SPJST-

Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club shares hugs, kisses with grandparents Dear Readers, Lodge 47 Youth Club celebrated grandparents day by giving out hugs and kisses to our grandparents and °then enjoying the sandwiches provided by our mother lodge. Boy, were they yummy! Our swim social was canceled due to the past rainy days. But that didn't let us down. Instead we decided to watch the movie "See Spot Run" and play monopoly. It was a great social. Sincerely, Dawn Capps (15) 9/19/01 —SPJST-

Lone Pay Life. It Isn't Just for Kids. As its name suggests, the purchaser of an SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate makes only one premium payment, resulting in a paid-up certificate. For years, it has been a favorite plan for parents and grandparents seeking to enroll their children and grandchildren in the SPJST. However, did you know that a Lone Pay Life certificate can be issued to individuals up to age 80? As you would expect, at the older issue ages, it can be-expensive; however, it could be just the thing for older members who want to buy additional permanent insurance. For example, a female at age 70 can purchase additional paid-up insurance at the rate of $570 per $1,000 of coverage with a minimum purchase of $5,000 coverage. The Lone Pay Life certificate may also be of interest to anyone wishing to make a gift of life insurance to a college, church, charitable organization or individual. For more information on the SPJST Lone Pay Life certificate or other financial products, please contact your local lodge sales representative.
