Lodge 84, Dallas member reports: "First impres!- ions can be appealing. by Carole Faraizl All my life I've been reading the accounts of others and trips to what is now the Czech Republic — never imagining that I, too, would one day be able to give my version. After 59 years, now I can! In July, my cousin, Elaine Gallagher, escorted 28 relatives, including my mother, Carolyn Nemec, 85, my son, Adam Faraizl. 23, and me on a 14-day tour of the land of our ancestors. In preparation for the trip, we gathered up our old and new family photos and more than 200 family postcards — some more than 100 yearsold — to see if our relatives could identify some of the names and faces that we didn't recognize. Before we took the trip, 14 days seemed a long time; however, as we were to discover, the time just flew by.
Having a Good Time! Texas observes Czech Heritage Month in October. That doesn't mean you can't start celebrating in September. Pictured above, Norma (Novotny) Morley of McPherson, Kansas and Leroy Hovorka of Caldwell, Kansas dance at Lodge 92, Fort Worth's Czech Heritage Day celebration on September 15 at National Hall. Leroy and Norma are King and Queen of the Midwestern Polka Club of Kansas. As such, they do a lot of travelling, promoting goodwill and polka music along the way. "We met so many nice people in Texas — warm and friendly people with open arms,' says Mr. Hovorka. See related photos on page 8. A

Buy Now; Save Later It's a Buyer's Market If I was in the market to buy real estate — without question -- I'd be calling SPJST Mortgage Loan Representative Ann Paruzinski for term quote on a real estate loan. Last week, the rates for new SPJST home and business real estate loans were reduced to their lowest levels in 40 years! Home loans and loans to purchase land are two of the popular member benefits offered by the SPJST to its members. In addition to offering very competitive interest rates, an SPJST mortgage provides the peace of mind knowing who you are cleating with. Unlike most commercial financial institutions, SPJST has never sold its mortgage notes to other financial institutions. The basic philosophy underlying the SPJST's mortgage lending program is that through mutual self-interest, individuals and families can achieve objectives unattainable by acting alone. "For nearly 75 years, the SPJST has been using its Mortgage Loan Program as one of its investment vehicles to invest the assets of the Society," says Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, who manages the Mortgage Lending Department. The interest generated from SPJST mortgage loans helps to maintain the rate of return offered on SPJST Universal Life certificates.
In order to be considered for a mortgage loan with the SPJST, you or your spouse must be a member of the Society. Underwriting guidelines stipulate that the SPJST may lend up to 75 percent of the purchase or appraised value, whichever is less, on "first-class residential real estate." For example, if the land and dwelling are appraised at $200,000, the maximum amount that could be Or. financed is $150,000. Likewise, each immediate family is subject to a maximum financing limitation of $250,000. The SPJST also makes loans to owner-owned businesses, says Sister Anglin. "If you need money to refinance, build or make improvement on your existing business structure, please give us a call." Certain restrictions apply. Call for eligibility requirements. The SPJST is currently offering home and farm mortgages with interest ranges ranging from 6.25 percent on a one to seven year note to 6.75 percent on a 21 - 30 year note. All interest rates, including business loan rates, are posted on page one. For complete information on terms and conditions of SPJST's underwriting guidelines and details on how to apply for an SPJST mortgage loan, please call the Home Office at (800) 7277578 and ask for Ann. —SPJST-

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
SPJST Library, Archives and Museum collection continues to grow A warm hello to each and everyone of you from the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM)! I hope everyone is enjoying the cooler weather now that fall is here. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. Even though the leaves are falling and we don't see as much growing around the countryside or in our gardens, fall always gives me a lift. There is a feeling of "crispness" and "coolness" in the air — a real treat after all the hot weather we experience in most of Texas. Of course, it was really "cool" to have so many visitors come visit the museum this summer. We appreciate all of our visitors and hope to see many more of you through the rest of this year. The following donations to the museum were received in the months of February, March and April: seltzer bottle or "spritzer" used in 1936 for making cocktails - donated by Alice J. Lee of Temple, Texas; wooden holder
with a set of brushes for cleaning shoes and clothes, four wooden coasters, tiny bottle in a wooden holder, two wooden decorative plates, wooden decorative bowl, wooden ashtray, wooden sewing display with pin cushion and measuring tape in holder, wooden novelty hammer, "man in wooden napkin holder," wooden pitcher with lid for hot drinks, wooden hot plate trivet, poppy seed grinder, and a Czech book. All of these items came from the Czech Republic and were donated by the family of the late Bessie Valcik of Dallas, Texas. Two panoramas of Prague from the year 1606, two pictures of Prague from the year 1835 - donated by Martha Daniel of Temple, Texas. Four Czech books, three Czech hymnals, one Czech Bible, one English hymnal, one history book, two cookbooks, two accordion-fold booklets of scenes from Prague and Bojnice, Czech Republic, booklet of 15 card scenes from Praha, (Continued on page five.)
Readers Write Lodge 88, Houston member expresses gratitude to SPJST Dear President Hegwood and Members:
"You have to walk a city block from the back of the church to the front," reports Carole Faraizl, with reference to the Basilica of Mary and the Saints Cyril and Methodius in Velehrad.
The recent flood relief check I received from the lodge and Supreme Lodge displays an act of fraternalisn that is difficult to put into words. This money will definitely help defray expenses in rebuilding my home.
Random acts of kindness that the Society has displayed throughout the years for its members and outside charitable organizations is extremely commendable and heartwarming. I no longer feel like a "victim," but a "survivor" of this natural act of God. Thank you ever so much; and it makes me even more proud to be affiliated with SPJST. Hats off also to the Supreme Lodge in instigating this fraternal activity. Fraternally and God bless, Marian Kadlecek —SPJST-

Lunch was at the Rimini Pizzerie in Luhacovice where we had a 12-inch thin crust pizza with four generous toppings including corn for 96k or $2.53. The teens on our trip said it was the best they've ever had! That evening, we went to see my great-grandmother's place in Velikova. The town has records of the Holik place already standing in 1800! Also touring were visitors from Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas,
Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington and the Czech Republic. In case you have forgotten, October is Czech Heritage Month in Texas. It seems just like yesterday that I was encouraging you to be sure to do something to celebrate the heritage. Read your newspaper, and of course, the Vestnik for upcoming events celebrating Czech Heritage Month. If you cannot make an outof-town trip to one of the festivities, visit your local library for books to read about the Czech culture. Many of you I am sure have access to the internet; log on a Czech website there are many, I know! And if at all possible, if you can make an out-oftown trip, come to Temple to visit and tour the museum. If you have already been here, we would be delighted to see you again. We hope to see many of you soon! Fraternally, Dorothy Pechal Museum Curator

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood reports on September meeting Hi! I have been slow in getting my report of our last meeting ready for print. With our nation's tragedy that we all experienced on September 11, I will try and get into the writing of our report. Let us all keep our prayers going for our nation. God bless America! Our President, Brother Johnnie Krizan, called the meeting to order on Sunday, September 9 (Grandparent's Day). We had all just finished a great meal prepared and served to us by our wonderful Youth Club. Christi Sparkman and Tracie Dobecka led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the reciting of our motto. Sister Georgie Soukup, Flagbearer, reported that 40 members and two guests were present at our meeting. Welcome to our guests, Kenneth and Melanie Peterson. Our Secretary, Sister Barbara Jean Hykel, was called upon for the reading of the minutes from our last meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Sister Hykel also read all correspondence. The treasurer's report was given by our Treasurer, Sister Peggy Dobecka. The report was approved as given. At this time, our sales representatives were recognized and given an opportunity to speak on outstanding applications. They were Sister Ruth Krizan and Brothers Robert Dobecka and Jerry Kucera. She thanked all the adults who helped the youngsters. Various youth participated in the Westfest parade. Sister Dobecka also reported that the youth did the

We all hope these ladies are feeling much better. Sister Hattie also reported sending a sympathy card to Brother Ernest and Sister Evelyn Bezdek, upon the death of Evelyn's brother, Jim Girard. Our condolences to the family.
Building Anniversary Brother Johnnie Krizan mentioned that the 100th Anniversary of our building is coming up September 8, 2002 (Wow—the same day I was born, but not the same year). He is also getting a list of anyone who may want a Christmas ornament depicting our building's 100th year birthday. The City of West has been doing various scenes in their community over the years by having a new Christmas Ornament each year. If anyone is interested in one of these ornaments of the Cottonwood Lodge 6 building 19082002, let Brother Johnnie know. They are $7 each, I believe. October 27 is "Making a Difference Day" in our area. The youth want to know if the lodge will participate with them. They are needing any suggestions on a project by our next meeting, October 7. Someone quickly mentioned, "pick up all the grasshoppers." The grasshoppers are really, really bad this year. Let's help our youth out and see what we can come up with by our next meeting. Okay? Those with September birthdays at our meeting were Sisters Stella Perez and Dorothy Dvorsky and Brothers Joe Dvorsky and Robert Seith. A happy birthday to all with a birthday this month. The $5 door prize was won by Sister Dorothy Kucera, and the progressive $7 door prize was won by Brother Al Soukup. Congratulations! Various other door prizes were exchanged. Next Meeting October 7 Our meeting then adjourned with our next meeting on Sunday, October 7 at 5 p.m., followed by a meal prepared by the Mareks and the Matuses. Be sure and note the time on your calendars as our meeting time has changed for this meeting. See lots of you on October 7 at 5 p.m. Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter —SPJST-

Lodge 92, Fort Worth Starlight Ballroom Hosts Big Band Sound on Fridays by Martha Durham
Fraternal Activities Coordinator The Starlight Ballroom presents ballroom dancing with big band sound each Friday night from 9 p.m. to midnight at SPJST Lodge. 92's National Hail, 3316 Roberts Cut-Off Road. SPJST is a fraternal insurance organization that began in Texas in 1897 after Czech immigrants made their way to Texas. Since that time, there have been some 210 SPJST lodges organized across Texas; SPJST Lodge 92 was chartered in Fort Worth in 1910. Community and family oriented activities are a benefit of membership in SPJST lodges. To further these activities, Lodge 92 has always kept its doors open to the public with ITI polka, waltz, country/western and big band dances. Great orchestras have played there through the years — Bob Wills, Ocie Stockard, Ray Swartz, Charlie Patterson, Winston Barney, Gary Lee, Ron Martin, Jack Melick, Dave Alexander, Jim Petty, Brave Combo, as well as many, many Czech polka and variety bands. Since 1982, the lodge membership has committed each Friday night to big band ballroom dancing. Four lodge members host and coordinate the Starlight Ballroom dances. They are Dick Durham, his daughter, Pam Durham, Albert Kubala and Frank Prochaska. Bands currently scheduled on a rotating basis are Dave Alexander, Charles Patteson, Ron Martin and Jim Petty who took over retiring Winston Barney's band. To complement regular ballroom dancing, there are special monthly

dances such as Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Fourth Of July, Hawaiian Luau, Fiesta Night, Roaring 20's, Grandparent's Day and Western Night when dancers may come in costume to vie for prizes. Of course, special holiday dances are featured. Dress code is enforced with ladies in dresses and gentlemen in ties and jackets in all months except June, July and August when casual dress is allowed (no jeans, shorts or athletic shoes, however). In addition to Friday night ballroom dances, SPJST Lodge 92 has country/western dances the first Sunday of each month from 3 to 7 p.m. with Randy and the Road house Band playing lively music for all ages. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to let them experience dancing as a life-time activity in a family oriented environment. The third Sunday of each month is polka/waltz/variety dance time for all ages from 3 to 7 p.m. The Youth Club of Lodge 92 sponsors a Valentine's Dance and Halloween party dance and thus learns basics of organizing and hosting activities for the lodge. SPJST Lodge 92 has been operating since 1938 in the same beautifully maintained building. Many have commented that National Hall has the best dance floor in this part of Texas. Joyce and Frank Tesar, Hall Managers for over 20 years, arrange hall rentals for weddings, anniversaries, quincienera, birthdays and business meetings. Call (817) 6241361 for information regarding your next party and remember that Friday night ballroom dancing is a healthy, fun activity at Starlight Ballroom. —SPJST-

204, Stephenville reflects on world events, encourages unity, strength Lodge
Dear Members, It has been a long time since I have written a letter and it is time that I take time to say a few things. Since I last wrote, the world has changed as we know it. A cowardly act on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon has killed more than 6,000 Americans and our lives will never be the same again. Not since December 7, 1941 has there been anything like this happen in the United States of America and never on the • mainland. For all of you who are old enough to remember that day know it will be one day that you will never forget the rest of your lives. For these terrorists to target civilians was unthinkable in the past, but now we are living in a completely different world. We need to support our president, the government and members of the armed forces because they are the ones who will be carrying the load and finding the ones who did this terrible thing. I had a brother, an uncle and several cousins in World War II and lost several relatives in that war. I served in the Korean Conflict and lost several good friends in that Conflict. How hurt and sad it can be to lose a loved one. My sympathy and prayers go to the families who lost loved ones in this war. Now is the time to work together as a nation as the people did during World War II, forget our petty differences, stand together as one nation, overcome this enemy and again be the strongest and best nation in the world. Now is the time to help our children to understand and to teach them the importance of our government and how it operates. It seems that lately much of the time we are interested in the new computers and surfing the
The next meeting will held on be the third Tuesday in October which will be on October 16. Hope to see you there. Well, there has been some rain again in the county and we are now busy mowing grass again. I hope this winter will be cold enough to kill the grasshoppers because they almost killed some of our trees this year and all of our flowers, but on the otherhand, the geese had a field day eating the grasshoppers. The other thing about living in the country is having wild animals come around the house as I have killed 10 coons and five skunks in my front yard this year. The animals seem to like the cat food that I have been feeding the cats, but that's life and the world keeps turning. We keep getting older every day. Norman M. Kneschk —SPJST-

offers bonus grants
Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart is no longer a corporate player in the National Make a Difference Day program. In past years, managers of Wal-Mart's more than 2,300 stores each had $1,000 in grants to help fund local Make a Difference Day projects. According to Wal-Mart, the program didn't generate the as much community involvement that they were hoping to see. Please note that doesn't mean that Wal-Mart isn't ready to help with a good cause. Groups seeking to assist 501 (c) (3) charitable groups — or government-sponsored groups — can still contact local store managers and inquire about their Bonus Grant program. This is a national program that enables local Wal-Mart managers to evaluate local projects and offer assistance, based on the individual merit of the project. So, if your lodge is considering a Make a Difference Day project on October 27, please keep WalMart in mind. They may be able to help — especially if you're seeking to assist a qualified charitable group. To that extent, please keep the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum in mind. It is a qualified 501 (c)(3) charity and its directors encourage lodges and youth clubs to get involved in projects that will promote and support its development. "We want to see the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum fully utilized as an educational tool," says LAM Treasurer Margaret Haisler. of SPJST. For more than 100 years, the SPJST has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live, work and play. We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 1111111111111W 01C-lr
