SPJST remains strong in light of world events Meeting at the SPJST Home Office in Temple last week, the Supreme Lodge voted to retain its highly competitive rates on its annuities and Universal Life certificates. "We're optimistic about the future of the SPJST and the future of America," says District Seven Director and Supreme Lodge Chairman Bob Bayer. "We are actively working to maintain our members support and confidence." "Recent world
events stemming
uncertain times," says Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride. In terms of building new membership in the SPJST, Brother McBride is already projecting that 2001 will be a "banner year" for the SPJST. "When A.M. Best rates the SPJST, they make reference to our 'loyal membership base'," says McBride. `The kind of loyalty that we enjoy as a fraternal society doesn't just happen. SPJST earned it one day at a time and by sticking with its members when times are tough."
"The Supreme Lodge stands in solidarity with its members during these uncertain times."
from the tragic events of September 11 put a lot people on edge," says Supreme Lodge Secretary-Treasurer Lanita Anglin, echoing Chairman Bayer's sentiments. In that kind of environment, she explains, it's tempting for financial institutions to hedge their investment portfolios by trimming the rate of return they offer their customers. "We didn't do that," she says. "It isn't necessary. Because of our members and our conservative investment strategy, the SPJST remains a strong financial institution. We will continue to offer our members a highly competitive rate of return on their money." The interest rate on SPJST Annuity II certificates will remain at 6.5 percent, at least through January 31, 2002, at which time they will again come under the scrutiny of the Supreme Lodge. The rate of return on SPJST Universal Life certificates also remains steady at 7.25 percent. "The Supreme Lodge stands in solidarity with its members during these

Issue Program In recent weeks, the SPJST Insurance Department, under Brother McBride's direction, has been inviting current members to take advantage of "guaranteed life insurance." The program enables members between the ages of 16 and 80 with $5,000 or less in coverage to purchase additional coverage regardless of past or current health. "Response has been very good," says Brother McBride of the guaranteed issue program. For information on the guaranteed issue program and how it could increase your coverage, please call the Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and ask for a customer service representative in the Insurance Department.
More Good News On a related note, it was reported in the October 3 Vestnik that SPJST mortgage lending rates had dropped to
Universal Life 7.25% for Annualized*

Home or Farm Mortgages:
6.50% for Annualized*

their lowest levels in more than 40 years. Well, if you are looking to buy land, build a home or refinance, there's more good news: The rates just got lower. The SPJST is currently offering home and farm mortgages with interest ranges ranging from 6.125 percent on a one- to 15-year note to 6.625 percent on a 21 - 30 year note. All interest rates, including business loan rates, are posted at the bottom of page one. For complete information on terms and conditions of SPJST's underwriting guidelines and details on how to apply for an SPJST mortgage loan, please call the Home Office at (800) 727-7578 and ask for Ann Paruzinski.
Consider Refinancing If you currently have an SPJST loan and would like to take advantage of the new, lower rates, here's another good thing that came out of the October Supreme Lodge meeting. It's called the "Mortgage Modification Agreement" and for a $400 flat fee, it will allow you to convert your existing SPJST loan to the new rates, plus one-quarter percentage point. Your payments will stay the same; however, with the lower interest rates, thee term will be shortened.
Entering the Home Stretch With less that three months to go in the SPJST's Mission 2100 Membership Drive, Supreme Lodge members are optimistic that the Society will achieve its goal of 2100 new member applications in the year 2001.
"The numbers look good," says Chairman Bayer. "At the current pace, we will reach 2100 members in December. That's a feather in the cap of every active sales rep and every member who has been assisting in the process by making referrals. "We encourage everyone to keep up the good work." —SPJST-

Let's Hear From You Don't Be Left Out Look below and you'll see we're in the process of compiling the 2002 SPJST Member Services Directory. If you received a letter requesting an update, please send it in. If you didn't receive a letter and would like to be listed, please take a few minutes to write us with the requested information and I'll see that you get listed. The directory is based on the idea of "members helping members." There is no charge for listings and the only prerequisite is that you are an SPJST member. As in the past, the directory will include the broadest range of service providers. Everything from accountants and auto mechanics and caterers to beauticians, musicians and home builders are invited to list their business. Part-time business owners and those who offer seasonal commodities — ranging from fresh produce and hay to firewood and Christmas trees — are encouraged to become a part of the directory. Over the years, some of the listings which have appeared in previous editions of the SPJST Member Service Directory have become outdated. For
that reason — even if you have been listed in past directories — it will be necessary to send in an update in order to be included in the 2002 listing. Also, we will once again be including local lodge listings in the 2002 directory. These listings will include directions to the lodge, where applicable, and a contact name and telephone number for additional information. Lodge secretaries are encouraged to check and see that their lodge is listed correctly in the 2001 directory. Thanks for Giving The SPJST kicked off its annual 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive on October 1. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount that is contributed is applied towards scholarships. Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik. To contribute to the 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, please send your check to: 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive SPJST Home Office P.O. Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 —SPJST-

Lodge 1, Fayetteville reports on October meeting The Fayetteville SPJST Lodge 1 met Thursday, October 4, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. at Keiler's Restaurant for their quarterly luncheon meeting. Guest Lynn Johnsen, SPJST Districts One and Five State Field Representative from College Station, talked to members about the 2001 incentive program, selling SPJST insurance certificates and recruiting another sales representative for Lodge 1. She also mentioned that letters had been mailed to members of each lodge with $5,000 or less of insurance coverage with the SPJST. These members, provided that they are between the ages of 16 and 80, have the opportunity to purchase additional insurance — regardless of past or present health and without a medical examination — through November, 2001. Lynn also talked about ad valorem taxes and the need for each lodge to talk to county tax offices and school boards regarding taxable properties. The matter was also addressed by President Polansky and the action he has taken on behalf of Lodge 1. With regard to statewide fraternal activities, Lynn mentioned the fivenight "Fun Ship" cruise vacation out of Galveston on Saturday, February 16, 2002 to Cozumel and Calic/Cancun that State Fraternal Activities Coordinator Gladys Yates put together. Statewide participation is invited. Fifty-Year Pin Presented President Louis Polansky presented 50-Year Membership Pins to Carol Chovanec of Fayetteville for her husband, Anton Chovanec and Ruth Froebel of Houston. Congratulations were extended to them for achieving this significant milestone! Lodge 1 members voted to share the costs with the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce to pay onehalf the costs of the installation of vinyl flooring in the kitchen at the SPJST Hall and putting in new floors and repairing fixtures in the outdoor restrooms. Members also voted to donate to the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce Lickskillet Auction and to the 2001-2002 SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive. Graduating high school seniors and college undergraduates who have been members of the SPJST for one year or more may request a scholarship application now through January, 2002. Correspondence read included a thank you note from city of Fayetteville for the SPJST donation

cards to Brother Eric Chmelar and Sisters Lillie Jarma and Rose Scott; sympathy card to Evelyn and John Trojacek, mother and step-father of Allan Henzen and to Carla Henzen and son—loss of husband and father, Allan. Secretary Georgia Hughes read correspondence from the Supreme Lodge concerning ad valorem taxes, scholarships being offered by SPJST and news concerning the museum and new home for the great collection of Czech artifacts in Temple. Brother Adolph Salac, House Committee Chairman, reported the work behind the bar and the mens' room has been completed except for the tile which he hopes to find to match the ones installed in the early 1970s. Brother Adolph always seems to locate items which are not easy to find for our building, but these tiles are a challenge — a big one. Hall Rentals Brother Emil Petr reported on rentals for the rest of the 2001 year and Sister Cheri Petr reported on bands that will provide music for your dancing pleasure during 2002. She does a great job! Youth Leader Bessie Petr reported on the many dance practices that took place in the last month but were well worth the effort. Lodge 84 had 20 younsters performing the "Red Handkerchief- and "Nanika" in the cabbage patch dances. One circle of teen beseda dancers and three circles of young adult dancers performed at the Heritage Day at the Texas State Fair on Sunday, October 14. On Saturday, October 13, the teen beseda circle of Lodge 84 danced at the Hall of State at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. entertaining fair-goers who enjoyed the performances very much in spite of the rain that fell on Friday night and continued into Saturday. Fraternalist of the Year I should mention that Assistant Youth Leader Sister Lynda Novak works very hard with the young people during the year and especially when asked to entertain our older citizens or plan visits for special occasion with them or just going to say hello and bring a flower which al l look forward to. Sister Lynda was nominated and elected as the fraternalist of the year. Congratulations, Sister Lynda. The members join the youth club in saying you are the best. Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council The Dallas-Ennis Fraternal Council has made a donation to the World War II Memorial being erected in Washington, D.C. In turn, a picture was sent to the council and displayed during the meeting at our lodge. The next meeting is on November 12 at our lodge with Lodge 84 hosting. On December 3, the meeting is also at Lodge 84. It is the annual Christmas party and the council is host. The party is at 7 p.m. SPJST members are asked to bring pastries for the occasion if you come. Lodge Gives to Red Cross During the lodge meeting, a vote was taken to make a donation to the Red Cross from our lodge to be used where most needed.
Wednesday, October 24, 2001---VESTNIK/9 Fraternal Activities Coordinator Faye Rejcek made her usual good report on charitable deeds as well as how many new members have joined our lodge during the year. The music you enjoyed during the Heritage Day for the many performances at the State Fair was the Dallas Czech Orchestra. The members in this group have played at the Myerson Theater, Golden Acres and many places in the Dallas-Fort Worth areas. The orchestra practices at our lodge and it should be known that many of our lodge members and members of other SPJST lodges are members of the orchestra which the late Brother Sid Pokiadnik organized and conducted for so many years. He would be proud of its continued success.
Upcoming Dances On November 17, come and enjoy dancing to Czech and Then Some from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.; December 15 Frank Dirba and the Little River Polka Boys (formerly the Granger Polka Boys) are here from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. This is just a name change, but the same great music; December 16 - SPJST Christmas party; December 31 - our New Year's Eve dance with the — and you love their music — Fritz Hodde and the Fabulous Six. Make your plans now to attend. President Yeager hopes you also plan to attend the November 19 lodge meeting. Vote for the officers who have been nominated by the committee if you choose to or not. Lodge 130, Dallas invites you to go camping Have you ever gone camping? If so, then you know how good it is to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Add family and friends to the mix and the experience becomes all the more memorable. With that in mind, please note that from October 27-30, Lodge 130, Dallas will host its annual camping trip at Old Fort Parker State Park, located between Grosebeck and Mexia in Central Texas. What's more, they invite you to join them. Old Fort Parker State Historical Park is a tribute to the Parker family and other pioneer families from Crawford County, Illinois who came to settle in Texas in 1833. On May 19, 1836, Comanche Indians attacked their encampment. Five were killed and
five were captured. The 21 survivors made their way to where Palestine is today. The most famous of the captives was Cynthia Ann Parker. She adapted to Indian ways and later married Chief Peta Nocona. Quanah Parker, the last great Comanche chief, who was involved in the Battle of Palo Duro Canyon, was the most famous of their three children. The Fort Parker Cemetery, located nearby, includes the graves of the people killed at the fort in 1836. The only charge for campers, will be the park fee of $2 per adult per night. Campers who are 13 and under are free. Other than that, Lodge 130 will pick up the tab for cabin rentals and the Saturday evening meal. And, just in case you're wondering, all of the cabins are air-conditioned and heated. The annual camping trip is a Lodge 130, Dallas tradition. "This has to be at least our 25th outing," says Brother Vrla. "I remember going when I was a boy and the fun we would have." Lodges and or individual members interested in getting in on the fun and history at Old Fort Parker State Park are encouraged to contact Lodge 130, Dallas Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator John Vrla, who is coordinating the trip. He can be reached at: (214) 324-0927 (home); (214) 906-3385 (work) or via the Internet at jvrla@att.net . —SPJST-

Christi Circle of Women report on October meeting Corpus
Forty-six members and friends joined together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Corpus Christi Circle of Women at Sokol Corpus Christi on October 4, 2001. There were 30 regular members, two honorary members and 14 guests present. Our guests were Frank, Jerry and Jill Sijansky, Bill Marek, Dorothy Benner, Myles Marek, Dan Jackson, Joe Nemecek, Duane McAlister, Debbie Kucera, Doris Fariss, Tommie Koeitn, Opal Murgatrouyp and Tiffany Lawrence. Three members noticeably missing were Norma Baker, Donna Havranek and Lillie Hayek. They very seldom miss a meeting, but each had a trip planned. Norma, her daughter and granddaughter were in Nashville enjoying country-western music. Donna was visiting family in Georgia and Lillie had flown to San Francisco to visit her granddaughter and family. They missed out on a truly memorable occasion. The 10th anniversary planning committee did an outstanding job decorating our meeting room using a patriotic theme. Three long tables were covered with alternating red and blue table cloths with the head table vertical at one end of the seating of our officers and those taking part in the ceremonies. Red, white and blue floral arrangements were spaced evenly along the tables with individual place cards for each person attending.
The charter members were seated at the center table and each received a lovely red and white corsage. Everyone received a name card commemorating our 10th anniversary and decorated with a red, white and blue ribbon. Each of us also received a colorful program booklet with a recent group picture of the Krouzek, a listing of charter members, present members, short history, past officers, etc. Our master of ceremonies was Frances McDonald with Becky Elzner Jackson giving the invocation. Rhonda White led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silence was observed in memory of our deceased members. Jerry Elzner presented us with a certificate of congratulations from the Governor of Texas on our tenth anniversary. He gave a short talk about the Czech Republic and reminded us October is Czech Heritage Month. He had a small table set up with a display of beautiful Czech cut glass times and also Czech kroj. Our guest speaker, Jerry Sijansky, spoke briefly of our early beginnings and growth and how over 65 years ago my grandmother, Dolfi Stransky, joined together with her Sokol friends in Dallas to form the Circle of Czech Women and became their first president. Following in her footsteps, I did the same in Corpus Christi. I told Jerry that 10 years ago when I got the idea of starting a Krouzek in Corpus Christi, I asked his mother, Adela, what she thought of the idea. she said, "You should have started one 10 years ago." I'm just glad I finally got it done. After obtaining permission from the Sokol Board of Directors and then the vote of the membership allowing us the use of the hall, invitations were sent to all female Sokol members by Norma Baker, then President of Sokol Corpus christi, Jerry Elzner called a few friends and I issued an open invitation to SPJST readers of the Vestnik to attend our first meeting Twenty ladies came and 19 joined. As of today, our membership stands at 51. "Happy Birthday" was sung to Kathy Marek and Helen Pavelka. Then a special drawing was held for a throw pillow made especially for our anniversary by Lillie Hayek. Jerry Sijansky donated three gift bags filled with practical SPJST gifts and Jill brought a beautiful wreath made by her daughter, Gerilyn and made out of red, white and blue cloth cut and folded into small points. Dorothy McCoy made a special autumn wreath. Thanks to these generous people for making such special gifts for our special occasion. The planning committee also purchased five blooming pot plants and two of our floral tables arrangements were drawn for. There were a lot of happy winners. A table was set up in the hall to hold four scrapbooks filled with pictures and memories of the past 10 years It was heartwarming to see pictures of happy times with friends no longer with us. Rhonda White and Helen Kasparek even had a small photo book of pictures taken of the happy group decorating for our big day. Thanks go to Dorothy McCoy, Becky Elzner, Marion Peterek, Ella Simcik, Dolores Pollok, Betty Jurica,

For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you do not walk alone. People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed: never throw out anyone. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself and the other for helping others. Fraternally, Kimberly Gaas 10/24/01 —SPJST-

9, Snook Youth Club member offers "beauty tips" Lodge
Dear Vestnik Readers, I wanted to share these beauty tips with you: For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
The competition then moved inside for a hot dog lunch. After cleaning up after the lunch, the two groups split up into teams where they had to match wits with one another requiring a lot of team work. Each team had been instructed to bring household items with them. They then had to draw from those items if an item was called from a list of possible items that was made up at random ahead of time. After a very heated and close race, the travelling trophy went to Lodge 88. Next year, the third annual Challenge Day will be hosted by Lodge 88. All had a good time and it was a good chance for them to be together in a fun atmosphere other than camp. Jeanine Coleman Assistant Youth Leader Lodge 196, Houston-West —SPJST-

of PJST. For more than loo years, the SPJST has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live, work and play. We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 4111111PN.-.■11TOM
