Drive started October 1 and continues through March 31, 2002. The goal for this year's drive is to raise $15,000. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of the amount that is contributed is applied toward scholarships.

The SPJST General Scholarship program was established in 1982 for all SPJST members. General Scholarships are funded by the Supreme Lodge and voluntary contributions by SPJST members. Accordingly, the more funds available, the more scholarships awarded. Leadership Grants were established in 1996 for active youth club members and are funded solely through allocations by the Supreme Lodge. Through the end of October, 163 donations totaling $1,590.26 had been made to the 2001 - 2002 drive. Thanks to those who have contributed. Your generosity will help many young SPJST attend or continue their college education. Acknowledgement of individual donations will be published in the Vestnik. The first listing for the 2001 - 2002 drive follows. Gifts of $50 or more are indicated in bold. Lodge District Name

A time to honor all those who have unselfishly served in our armed forces, risking so much to preserve our nation's high ideals and hopes for the future. To those dedicated men and women, we say, "Thank you."

Freedom is Not Free I watched the flag pass by one day It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, And then he stood at ease.

I wonder just how many times, That Taps had meant "Amen" When a flag had covered a coffin of a brother or a friend.

1 looked at him in uniform; So young, so tall, so proud; With hair cut square and eyes alert, He'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives; Of fathers, sons and husbands, With interrupted lives.

I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers tears?

1 thought about a graveyard, At the bottom of the sea; Of unmarked graves in Arlington, No, freedom is not free!

How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many fox holes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom is not free. I heard the sound of Taps one night, When everything was still. I listened to the bugler play, And felt a sudden chill.

It Helps When You Can Laugh Breathe Easy "Laughter is not only fun. It is also good for us. At last! Something good for us that is also enjoyable. There is no need for "yukky tasting" concoctions, profuse sweating in concentrated exercise, or a change in our diet for this particular pursuit of health. All that's required is pure, unrestrained, old-fashioned laughter. It heals the body and eases painful emotions like anger and fear. It helps us cope with daily survival in a pleasant and effective way." — Enda Junkins That's so true! According to studies — and believe it or not, there are such studies — adults laugh approximately 15 times per day, while children laugh about 400 times a day! By the time we grow up, we somehow we manage to lose a few hundred laughs a day. Learning to smile and laugh again — more easily and often — can have a profound and positive effect on our health and well being. Indeed, the notion that humor might actually produce healing-enhancing changes in the body is gaining respect among some medical researchers.

According to John Morreall, a philosopher at the University of South Florida in Tampa, the first human laughter may have begun as a gesture of shared relief at the passing of some danger. "It's a signal that now we can relax," he speculates. When someone laughs, muscles do in fact relax throughout the body. Laughter won't change your problems or minimize their importance; however, it can change you so that you can deal with your challenges and relate to them from a less overwhelming perspective. It also makes you feel good again. Last Wednesday — on Halloween SPJST Home Office personnel put that theory to the test when many of us came to work dressed in costume. It was a lot of fun. Even though we see each other all the time, the humorous masquerade brought us closer as a group. Having a sense Of humor is a wonderful gift. With the holiday season fast approaching there's no better time to spread, good cheer with your family, friends and neighbors. Give it a try — at home, at work and in your lodge — and get ready to smile —SPJST-

All in a Day's Work For the SPJST Home Office staff, October 31 provided the opportunity to mix business with pleasure. Readers Write Lodge 97, Placedo member thankful for patriotism, and fraternalism Dear Editor, Today, my family and I had the pleasure of attending the District Six Fall Meeting at Lodge 40, El CampoHillje. We all have been affected by the terrorists attack on September 11, 2001 in some way or the other. My heart and prayers go out to those who lost someone or were injured. Still, in the midst of all this tragedy, it has been so wonderful to see the value of patriotism resurfacing and being taught once again in great detail It's such a pleasure to see Old Glory flying from so many flag poles at homes and businesses throughout the world. A Beautiful Sight to See It was truly a beautiful sight to see and hear the youth from so many lodges hold their American flags, recite poems and sing the patriotic songs I learned in my youth and still sing with pride today. I would like to thank all the youth leaders, parents and family members who are instilling these values of patriotism and support of our county in our youth today. I salute all who participated! You brought tears of joy and pride into my eyes and others. You all did such a wonderful job! You are all a blessing

to all SPJST lodges statewide! As great Americans, you showed us that together we will rebuild, we will go on and we will see to it that justice is done to those who caused these heinous acts. Youth and youth leaders, continue to be a blessing to our SPJST lodges and keep up the great work! Remember that our America is protected by God and together and with His help, we can do anything we set our hearts to. May He bless us all and the United States of America! Since Frances Walker and Vicki Dressler are already members, they did not have to be voted in. Treasurer Tennie Walla stated that

all the treasurer's books have been completed and sent to the bookkeeper; however, as of date, we have not received them back. Youth Club Meeting Youth Leader Adenna Reyes told everyone that she had her first youth club meeting and six children attended the meeting. The weather was bad and Melanie did not send the invitations out in time so some people did not receive the notice until it was too late to make the meeting. Entertainment Committee Chairperson Josephine Mayfield stated that Diversions drew a crowd of 161 which was a good crowd considering the competition we had that night. Jo stated that she had sent a letter to Julius Tupa and to Channel 62 as well as to all the local newspapers asking them to please advertise the November 17 dance for us. She also stated that she would send them another letter next week asking them to advertise that our New Year's Eve tickets are on sale. Jo mentioned that she had gone out and priced the nine ounce plastic juice cup that we plan to serve the blackeye peas in New Year's Eve and found that Target had the cheapest price at 97 cents for 25 cups in a pack. Jo informed everyone that the New Year's Eve tickets will go on sale Thursday, November 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day Monday to Friday until New Year's Eve as well as at the three Saturday night dances. By selling them during the week day, it will give the people who are unable to come to the dance on Saturday nights a better chance to buy their tickets. Since we only have three dances left before New Year's Eve, it would be harder for a lot of people to get their tickets. Dances Scheduled

Jo informed everyone that she has hired the bands for the first three months of next year. They are: January 5—Texas Roadrunner Band at a cost of $450; February 2—Texas Highway Band (this is a new band) at a cost of $450; March 2—Texas Star at a cost of $400. The Texas Highway Band will be booked as our Valentine Band. Moses, of the Texas Highway Band, stated that he would put an ad on radio, television, put out flyers and ads in the newspapers. Jo told him we told him she would do the same. This is the band that we have been able to make a deal with. Robert wished everyone with a birthday in the month of November a happy birthday. Robert told everyone that Don Miller of April Air came out to check air conditioning unit number seven and told him the back fan motor in the unit is grounded out and that the primary unit has something wrong with it. Robert stated that he had called Don Miller out to check out the walkin cooler—the coils are-freezing up. President Mayfield informed everyone that we needed to elect the Nominating Committee tonight. Those nominated to be on the nominating committee were Tennie Walla, Weldon Wilkerson and Lillie Mae Peter. Brother Stokley moved that the nominations cease and they be elected

by acclamation. Brother Tofte seconded motion. Motion approved. The Auditing Committee was also nominated. They are Norman Tofte, Vicki Dressler and Clay Stokley. Sister Walla made a motion that the nominations cease and they be elected by acclamation. Brother Wilkerson seconded the motion. Motion approved. Next was the nomination for the Fraternalist of the Year. Those nominated were Art Wiederhold, Lillia Mae Peter and Robert Mayfield. Sister Walla made a motion that the nominations cease and the election be held. Lillia Mae Peter was elected the Fratemalist of the Year. President Mayfield asked if we would like to donate to Officer Santa this year. A motion was made by Brother Wiederhold that we donate $25 again this year like we have in the past. Brother Tofte seconded the motion. Motion approved. A suggestion was make that the, meeting dates for November be changed due to a conflict with Thanksgiving. It was suggested, that we rescind the by-laws for the November meeting this year only and change the dates for the executive meeting to November 14 and the regular meeting to November 28. A. motion was made by Brother Stokley to rescind the by-law for November of this year only. Brother Wilkerson seconded the motion. Motion approved. Sister Walla made motion that we have the executive meeting on November 14 and the regular meeting on November 28. Brother Stokley seconded motion. Motion approved. Robert asked Lynn Johnsen State FTC Field Representative for Districts One and Five to say a few words. Lynn talked about Mission 2100. Lynn stated that Mission 2100 is on track to make the goal for 2100. She also stated that the Universal Life interest rates would remain the same until January 31. Robert then asked Larry Pflughaupt District Five Director to say a few words. Larry explained the three-year planning document and the plaques that will be given to the people who are no longer in office after the election of officers. Robert informed everyone that he got a call from a Mr. Tom Vance. Mr. Vince stated to Robert that he was interested in leasing three acres of land in La. Marque to drill for gas. They will pay $15,000 up front to drill for gas. If they hit gas, they will drop two acres and retain one acre for a well and install a tank. Mr. Vance is going to fax us more information. Regular Meeting November 28 Robert reminded everyone that work day is November 5; executive meeting November 14; and regular meeting November 28. Door Prizes $10 was won by Vicki Dressler, other door prizes were won by Tennie Walla, Julius Zella, Mary Ann Zotyka, Jo Mayfield, Norman Tofte, Lillia Mae Peter, Henrietta Krenek, Weldon Wilkerson, Clay Stokley, Art Wiederhold, Karen Warren and Leona Zella. Lodge 177, Academy reports on October meeting Our meeting was called to order on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. with all lodge officers present. Members recited Pledge of Allegiance. Libbie Bartek, chairperson for the Sunshine Committee, gave her report stating that Jackie Beck is ill. We also received an update on the status of Clifford Tomastik and Bill told Libbie to keep us informed him of this condition. Our minutes were approved as presented. We received no correspondence. All committee reports were given and filed for audit. Our youth club has not has its regular meeting for October as of this date. Youth Leader Janet Lyon gave members a report of the Christmas ornament contest held at the District Two Fall Meeting. Our trustees met and decided to continue to have security at bingo. They also voted to increase the rental fee for the lodge. JoAnne Hutka, Lodge Fraternal Activities Coordinator, recognized October birthdays. Tana Komar will . be celebrating her birthday on October 15. Happy birthday, Tana! We discussed our Christmas party and it was decided that JoAnne will locate a place to have the party. Our members want to have the party at a place other than the lodge. In the November meeting, JoAnne will tell us what she's planned for the party. We were excited to learn that we have several members who have purchased additional insurance and that counts towards the Lodge Incentive Program: Francis William Heise and James Elliott Tomastik. As of this meeting date, we have 29 new members and that means we have the Gold Award for the lodge. We're really proud of that! Under new business, Bill Hutka reminded everyone that all offices and committee positions are open next month during our regular lodge election. He told all of us that a nominating committee would be appointed but that would not preclude someone else from being nominated for an officer or committee position. He stressed the importance of qualifying for these positions by having attended at least a majority of lodge meetings. Our nominating committee is Harvey LaFlamme, Bill Komar and Louis Driska. This committee will present a slate of officers at the next meeting in November. With no other business, our meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m. Fraternally, Kathy Fritz, FICF Secretary/Reporter —SPJST-

The Story of the Star-Spangled Banner Part 1 of 2 The Star-Spangled Banner is a very old American flag. It flew over a fort -Fort McHenry -- in Baltimore, Maryland during the War of 1812. During th War of 1812, the British fought against the Americans. The commander of Fort McHenry, Major Armistead, wanted a very big flag that everyone could see. He wanted everyone to know that Fort McHenry belonged to the Americans. So Major Armistead asked Mary Pickersgill to sew a huge flag that was 30 feet high and 42 feet wide. Mrs. Pickersgill's 13-yearold daughter, Caroline helped, too. The flag had 15 white stars on a blue background, and 15 red and white stripes. A year later, in September 1814, the British navy bombed Fort McHenry. Warships fired 200-pound cannon balls at the fort all day and during the night Americans were scared that the British would win and take over the fort and the city of Baltimore. One American, named Francis Scott Key, witnessed the bombing while he was on a ship. Because he was far away, he could not see Fort McHenry very well All he could see were the bombs and the smoke from the battle. He was very worried that the Americans had lost the battle. But at dawn the next day, he saw the Star-Spangled Banner flying over Fort McHenry in triumph. Major Armistead's huge flag proved that the Americans had won. Mr. Key was so inspired that he wrote down some words for a poem about seeing the StarSpangled Banner. Later his poem became the words to the song, "The StarSpangled Banner." That song is our national anthem.

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on recent activities Dear Vestnik Readers: On September 16, my family and I participated in Lodge 84's annual Czech Fest. We ate pork roast, sauerkraut, dumplings, green beans and salad for dinner. After dinner, I had $5 to spend at our craft store, games, grocery wheel or walk in the cake walk (my Great Grandma Nemec usually plays this game with me, but she couldn't come.) Instead. I bought cupcakes to share with my family and toy spiders to scare my family and friends with I played the fishing game that my Aunt Mandy and her boyfriend manned for the children's area. They were fun to watch. Also, since iii behind in writing, I also participated in Heritage Day at the State Fair of Texas on October 14. I have attended every year to celebrate my Czech heritage (with the exception of the year my sister was born.) Now, I have collected six Heritage Day ribbons. I'm hoping to eventually have

as many as my mom (she wore 12 this year, although she has received one for just about every year of life). My mom, dad, grandma and grandpa Faraizal and Aunt Mandy Faraizal danced the beseda. Then we had to wait an extra long time until after the Norwegian Folk Dancers from Houston finished their dances. My sister, Nicole, who is almost three, and I danced the Little Red Handkerchief and Annie in the Cabbage Patch a Andulaka Do Zely dances together along with the 16 other children from our lodge. By the time we finished our dances, we were hot and sweaty (and hungry), but we cooled off quickly in the autumn air. We then spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around the fair grounds, playing games on the Midway and eating nachos and cotton candy. I am hosting the Lodge 84 Halloween party on October 27 at my house. I will let all of you know after the party what we did. Until my next letter .. . Fraternally, David R. of SPJST. For more than loco years, the SPJST has worked to ensure the financial security of its members and its fraternal commitment to the communities where SPJST members live, work and play. We're a fraternal benefit society that members can join for any number of reasons. It's a package deal built upon the idea of addressing human needs — financial, social and cultural. The ability to meet those needs and uphold strong human values is the mortar that holds the Society together. The loyalty and breadth of experience of our management, directors, staff and local lodge leaders contributes greatly to the our ability to identify and respond to the changing needs of our members and the communities that we seek to serve. With a faith born of deeds and a renewed commitment to spreading the good word about the SPJST, we look forward to working with you and being your first choice fraternal. 411111,',11.-"X‘rfinikka 1111111111111111 INIONSW
