Holidays an opportunity to link past, present and future By virtue of our membership in the SPJST, each of us represents a link to the past and to the future of our local lodges. And, just as loving families foster constructive relationships between the generations, so do good lodges. The older members recognize that the younger members are their hope for the future. Likewise, the younger members recognize that older members have years of wisdom and experience on their side and are ready to listen when their elders offer suggestions

As a fraternal benefit society, one of the SPJST's greatest strengths is its capacity to bring families and friends together. In essence, it is service to each other and to our communities that validates our very existence as a fraternal benefit society. As we enter into this Holiday Season, may we be ever mindful that we are all members of the same family --- the Family of Man. If your lodge is getting together to celebrate the holidays, join in the fun and make yourself at home! -SPJSTUniversal Life 7.25% for Annualized"

Good Ideas Are Worth Courting Just in Time for Christmas One of the most powerful tools in our fraternal tool kits is the combination of commitment and action. When we commit ourselves to something, we know it's going to happen and we act as though it's going to happen. Take this year's Mission 2100 program for example: At the current pace, we will achieve our organizational goal of writing 2,100 new member applications sometime in December. Please contact your local lodge sales representative for good information on the many insurance programs available through the SPJST. In some cases, the insurance application process can be accomplished at your home in one meeting. At other times, it may take an additional visit since the sales representative may need to spend some time assessing the information you provide in the initial meeting before he or she can recommend the appropriate_ life insurance solution. For more information on the life insurance options available to you, call the SPJST Insurance Department at (800) 727-7578 and they can put you in touch with a sales representative in your area. —SPJST-

State Youth Director invites members to holiday open house Dear SPJST Members and Friends, I invite you and your family to an exciting holiday evening in Temple on Tuesday, December 4. The evening begins with the Temple Christmas Parade at 6:30 p.m. on Central Avenue. The parade is always a beautiful one, and it is one of only a few nighttime parades in Texas. SPJST will have several entries in the parade. Following the parade, everyone is invited to the SPJST Home Office Holiday Open House. The Home Office is located at 520 North Main Street in Temple. The Open House will include live holiday music and Christmas caroling by the Chisholm Trail Chorus of Sweet Adelines. SPJST State King Nathan Block and State Duke Dylan Schwartz, both of Lodge 160, San Angelo, and State Queen Jamie Lyn Novak and State Duchess Cayla Cloutman, both of Lodge 84, Dallas, will greet guests. Santa, Mrs. Claus and their elves will be taking Christmas wishes. The Open House will also feature children's activities and Temple Police Department's DARE Ident-a-Child program. Horse-drawn carriage rides by Goodtime Carriage Rides will take guests around the block for an old-
fashioned ride. Homemade cookies, kolaches, hot chocolate, coffee and apple cider will be served. Throughout the holiday season, the Home Office will feature the Youth Christmas Tree, decorated with ornaments created by SPJST. Youth Club members from across Texas. The museum will also display a Czech Christmas tree with traditional Czech decorations. And, during the Open House, the museum will come to life with several areas featuring men and women who will be available to tell about different areas. A doctor, a farmer, a World War II veteran, a blacksmith, a musician, a cook, and a needle-crafter will be featured. This will be a true learning experience for all ages. The Home Office will also be sponsoring a toy drive through the holiday season. Toys will be donated to the Temple Coordinated Child CareCouncil to provide a memorable Christmas for economically disadvantaged families, All toy donations will be greatly appreciated. The SPJST Holiday Open House is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit. I wish you a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you and your family at the Open House. Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director — SPJST-

Merel said she had lots of stories to tell, but chose one to tell where the prisoners would put on shows for entertainment. They called it the Show Boat and performers dressed up as women. On this particular occasion, the Germans caught them and wanted to know - how these beautiful women got into camp. To make a long story short, these prisoners had to prove to the Germans they were really men. Pauline Walker stated her husband was at Pearl Harbor an it was two months before anyone heard from him. Lydia Alholm was the only woman in our club who served in the military. Sunshine Person Lydia reported on sending get well cards to Jeannie Mason, Carrie Milan and Georgia Davidson. The singing of, "Happy Birthday" went out to Merel Kovar and Tracy Horn, our new member. May you all have many more. Everyone was asked to bring the same assigned dish for our Christmas luncheon and Linda Lewis will prepare the ham which the Club will purchase. Also, be sure to bring a $5 gift to exchange. Alice had appointed Lydia Alholm, Billye Starr and Pat McWilliams to serve on the nominating committee. In their report, they nominated the same officers to serve for the ensuing year. No other nominations were made, therefore, the same officers were re-elected.

Roy and Lydia Alholm enjoyed a super great weekend with a visit from daughter in-law, Kathy Alholm and grandsons, Matthew and wife, Julia, Daniel and Timothy Alholm, all from the Glen Ellyn, Illinois area. On Saturday, they treated everyone including son, R.L., Lydia's brother, Joe and sister, Frances, to a Texas barbecue with all the trimmings catered by Risky plus a little Czech flavor of sauerkraut. On Sunday, they enjoyed lunch at El Fenix Restaurant which was Tony's favorite eating place. Everyone, especially Roy, enjoyed the visit. Anna Marie Moncrief reported on a wonderful cruise on the Mediterranean Sea with her husband in celebration of their 25th wedding anniversary. They even repeated their vows at sea. Sights included Rome, Greece, Turkey, Venice, Monte Carlo and while Anna Marie said they didn't have time to enjoy Monte Carlo, she was lucky at the slot machines on board the ship.
Rose Romeo enjoyed her recent trip to New Jersey visiting with her five sisters. Don't you know they had lots of catching up to do. Agnes Reznicek stated she watched all seven games of the World . Series and was so excited that her team, The Diamond Backs, won. I didn't even know Agnes was such a sports fan. Thanks go out to Libbie Elsik of the Ennis Sewing Circle for sending the old jeans to Billy King. Billy can now make another of her denim quilts. Following the meeting, grace was said and we had a beautiful Thanksgiving luncheon. Master chefs Linda Lewis and Nettie Naugle prepared the turkeys, Louise Oujesky and Kathy Ornsbee prepared the dressing and Nettie made the huge pot of gravy. All was wonderful plus all the other side dishes brought by everyone made for a truly beautiful Thanksgiving dinner. Special thanks go out to Linda Lewis as she requested a donation be made to the cancer society in memory of her husband in lieu of reimbursement. Also, special thanks go out to Anna Marie Moncrief and Rose Ann Spann for the decorations. They were truly beautiful. Several of us, including myself, enjoyed being winners of the table centerpieces. Youth Director invites members to "make an angel" State
Dear Members and Friends, While people all over the world are deeply sorry for the loss of so many lives in the United States on September 11, 2001, we're also sad for the families and friends of those who died. As soon as Americans heard about the tragedies, they rushed to give blood and make donations to help the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and others working to aid the victims' families. At times like this, everyone wants to help and show his support, so we're joining a nationwide effort to remember those who died on September 11. I hope you'll take part, too. Created by Clapper Publishing of suburban Chicago, The Angel Project is an activity in which people are invited to make ornament-sized angels in memory of the victims of this national tragedy. During Christmas week, the angels will be hand-delivered to New York City for a special The Angel Project memorial service. Through The Angel Project, people can pay tribute to those who have died and, by creating something with their own hands, help themselves heal from this heartache, too. Although not everyone can deliver condolences in person, all Americans can send a message from their hearts through these angels. Seeing the angels will let the survivors know that people everywhere are thinking of them, and making the figures is another way you can help to remember their loved ones and show your support of America. Please mail completed angels by December 4, 2001, to: State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny PO Box 100 Temple, Texas 76503 Please feel free to sign your angel if you wish. I hope you will join me in this outpouring of sympathy, love, and support. God Bless America! Fraternally yours, Melanie Zavodny State Youth Director —SPJST-
