Elmininate A the Clutter It's a Matter of Choice Have you got a junk drawer at home? Based on personal experience, it's usually in the kitchen — and it contains everything from used twist ties and rubber bands to loose screws, expired coupons, and old pens that are about as useful as sharp sticks for writing. We had a drawer like that when I was growing up. It's a tradition that endures in our home today. Why? Sometimes it's hard to get rid of some of that stuff! Who knows when you might need one of those little springs out of an old ball point pen. Or, those old batteries. They could come in handy some day ... No? So what do you do when the drawer gets so full that you can barely open and close it? One of two things. You can compound the mess and simply start another drawer. Or, you can do a little housecleaning and discard the clutter that's just taking up space. I've already decided: I'm going to do that by year's end. The same can be said for the negative ideas that sometimes fill our heads. You know what I mean, Left unchecked, old grudges, prejudices and pre-conceived notions about people, places and things can be damaging. It doesn't have to be that way. Whether or not we choose to hold on to to our mental clutter is a matter of choice. May the arrival of the New Year represent a time of fraternal re-birth and commitment to high ideals throughout the SPJST! Life is a precious gift that can be gone in an instant. Let's put our fraternal status to good use. Best wishes to you and yours for a happy new year.
er Roy Haag of Lodge 185, New Braunfels. Brother Haag's a pretty happy fellow, so I'd put stock in what he has to say! Thanks, Roy. 1. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. 2. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening — whatever. Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop," 3. Enjoy the simple things. When the children are young, that is all that you can afford. When they are in college, that is all that you can afford. When you are on retirement, that is all that you can afford! 4. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath. Laugh so much that you can be tracked in the store by your distinctive laughter. 5. Tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be alive while you are alive don't put out a mailbox on the highway of death and just wait in residence for your mail. 6. Surround yourself with what you love, whether it is family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 7. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctor worry about them. That is why you pay him — or her. 8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9. Don't take guilt trips. Go to the mall, the next county, a foreign country, but not to "guilt country." 10. Tell the people you love, that you love them, at every opportunity. Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. —SPJST-

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 6, Cottonwood preparing to ring in the new year Hi! Come on out to SPJST Lodge 6, Cottonwood, for a New Year's Eve Fellowship on December 31. We plan on starting around 7 p.m. or whenever you wish to come out. There will be some great fun in getting together and bringing in another year. Bring whatever games you like to play. There will be domino games, taroky perhaps, and other card games. Nothing fancy; just bring a little something to nibble on and let's ring in another year together. Everyone is welcome, so feel free to bring your dish of snacking food and join us folks out at Cottonwood for games, food and fellowship. The more the merrier, and all of us love to "play and eat." Looking forward to seeing lots of you on Monday evening, December 31, starting at 7 p.m. at Cottonwood Hall. Fraternally, Stella Perez, Reporter —SPJST---

Lodge 18, Elg reports on December meeting It was at the last meeting for Lodge 18, Elgin for the year and also the last for several devoted officers and committees for many years. It was 7:30 p.m. when the lodge President Andrew Greinert weak after spending six days in a Temple hospital brought the meeting to order and welcorned all members. All joined in the Pledge of Allegiance and a long silent tribute to all departed and ill members. Roll call of all officers and committees was called. Due to the absence of the lodge reporter, Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator Dollie Hajda took notes. The minutes of the November meeting were read by Secretary Agnes Eschberger which were approved. Thomas Ries gave the lodge report on finances. Other reports were made by committees of the tickets, rentals, youth, rules and regulation, house, and yard. Jack Eschberger, Secretary of the trustees had no report. Taking Care of Business Trustee member Walter Bartosh asked for the floor. He thanked all the members who worked long hours in the past years. Many devoted hours of their work days, sick days and vacation time. A blind eye can see the great things that have happened under the supervision of President Andrew Greinert and the trustees Jack Eschberger, Thomas Ries, Johnny Vrabel, Walter Bartosh, Floyde Felfe—in the past six years. Thousands in dollars were payed off in notes—building was built to house machinery, lots of machinery (mowers, trimmer, tools) to keep grounds in shape, parking lot paved, drive around the building, slab for trash bin, air conditioners, fans installed, fans repaired, lighted parking lot, cooler boxes for the bar, ice maker, microwave oven (for popcorn), coffee maker, copy machine, paper dispensers (for bathrooms), security alarm installed (after several breakins), lighted sign at the entrance, handi-cap places marked with signs and striped, the whole building roof repaired, donation in money in large sums to needy organizations and lots of hard expensive jobs done by members. All of this was because of few dedicated members who are proud to be members of Lodge 18, Elgin and Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas—Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas, SPJST. When the by-laws were approved, it was that you must pay your lodge dues $5 — for the year and attend so many meetings. There was a deadline for paying dues. With so many who wanted to hold an office, the rules had to be amended. Not all members voted for the change and most sat in silence.

my broken hip, but I have a lot to look forward to. My grandson, Brooks Eubank, from Harvard Law School, is coming for Christmas to see his mother, Jeannette Eubank, and me. Christmas is a lovely time of the year, but it also is sad for there are lovely people missing. (I am thinking of my sister, Alice Braikovich, who passed away last January.) At the annual meeting memorial, Willie Mae Ermis lit a candle for her husband, Jerome Ermis, who had been lodge president for 14 years and treasurer for 24 years. I was sorry to miss the big birthday celebration for Adolph Shumbera's 80th birthday at Holman. I wish you another celebration on your 81st and I plan to be there! Get well wishes go to Ernest Anders (a triple by-pass), Henry Kite, and John Vasula. Many good wishes also go to Ellen Miculka, who is doing well after open heart surgery, Ann Urbanovsky (therapy) and Charles Kadlecek who is doing fine after a kidney transplant. I wish you a very happy holiday season and may the New Year be a great one for all of you. Tillie Helmcamp Second Vice President —SPJST-

Lewis called the meeting to order and all the ladies stood up and recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Secretary Julia Dueser has had an accident and requested to resign. Betty Lindsay recorded the minutes. Evelyn Spacek gave her sunshine report and acknowledged the correspondence received during the month of November. Mary Ann Kozel thanked today's hostesses, Ima Lou LaPlant, Billie Starr and Linda Lewis who cooked the ham and Mary Ann Gibson who made the gravy and Joe Kozel cooked the turkey and also played his accordion for our Christmas dinner. Hostesses for January will be Helen Kubala, Jean Sparkman, Martha Clifton and Janie Cepica.
New Business Vice President Martha Durham recommended purchasing the party serving dishes as a gift from the Ladies Circle for the National Hall kitchen. The ladies sang, "Happy Birthday" to the December members James Greer, Ann Sustala, Anna Lesikar and Joe Kozel. We all enjoyed our Christmas party as James Greer told the Wright Story and gifts were passed left to right. The ladies got so mixed up they didn't know whether they were coming or going with the gifts; however, we all received a present. Thanks, James Greer for being a great story teller. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, January 8, 2002. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Respectfully submitted, Betty Lindsay Secretary/Reporter —SPJST-

Take a Closer Look at SPJST Annuities "The basic purpose of an annuity is to distribute a regular, guaranteed lifetime income through a scientific liquidation of invested capital. Annuities start with a sum of money that has either been paid in a lump sum (single pay annuities) or has been accumulated through payments over a number of years (deferred annuities). In planning for retirement, a person may want to "send money ahead" by making regular payments to an annuity years before retirement. At retirement, the annuity will be ready to make payments back to supplement retirement income . . . -- Introduction to Life Underwriting, Dearborn • R&R Newkirk, Dearborn Financial Publishing, Inc. Merry Christmas from Lodge 154, Fort Worth Attention Everyone! Rosie Steinman has been photographed kissing Santa Claus! After the kiss, she cornered him and gave him a bit of a history lesson. This was
overheard: "Santa, you know, the idea of Santa Claus can be traced back to the 4th century when there was a universal belief that St. Nicholas was a bishop from Asia Minor. However, religious historians claim there is no evidence that he ever existed! Some think that he was a recycled pagan god. The Greeks believed that he is attributed to the legend of the sea god, Hold Nikar, who was a sailor, and that the Church created the persona of St. Nicholas! St. Nicholas adopted some of the qualities of "The Grandmare" of Befama from Italy who filled children's socks with gifts. St. Nicholas is considered to be the patron saint of children and sailors. Many legends are attributed to him, as an infant, his mother only nursed him on Wednesdays and Fridays. He halted storms and saved drowning sailors. During his lifetime he is said to have adored children and threw gifts into the windows of their homes, and is said to have even brought back to life several children who.were killed. Beginning in the 1 Oth century, Christian authors accelerated the legends of St. Nicholas. And by the 19th century, he was superseded by Christ Kindlein. He was said to have been a dwarf with a dwarf-like helper called Pelznickel and the image we know as Santa Claus, became one with Kris Kringle!

Even the rain that was around all day Sunday did not keep some of the members from coming. The members were served a great meal followed by a short meeting and several things were discussed about the lodge that needed to be done before the end of the year. As the last of the first year of the 21st century is coming to an end, we look back at the bombing of the World Trade Center and try to keep things in our own lives going and wonder how could these things happen. We find there is no easy answer and know that we need to keep going although a lot of people lost their jobs and Christmas will not be as happy as they would like.

Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) registering early Czech families Texans of Czech Ancestry (TOCA) is reactivating the "Gold, Silver and Bronze Certificates" project begun in 1986 during Texas Sesquicentennial Year. "Gold Certificates" are awarded to Czech families which have lived in Texas by or before the end of 1861. "Silver Certificates" are awarded to Czech families which have lived in Texas since 1862, but before the end of the 1886. "Bronze Certificates" are for the year 1887 through the end of 1920. Texas Czech
Heritage and Cultural Center hosts Christmas open house The Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center in La Grange opened the doors of its office, the Kalich House, on Saturday, December 15 for its first annual Holiday Open House. A soggy previous week and a very overcast day did not dampen the enthusiasm of the more than 150 people from throughout the state who were jampacked into the TCHCC Visitors' Center. A Warm Welcome Visitors were greeted at the front porch, which had been decorated by Kathy Hanzelka, Dan Hrna and Paul and Dorothy Watthuber, all from Houston. The entry door was decorated with a wreath provided by the Czech Heritage Society of Fayette County under the direction of Helen Mikus and Carolyn Meiners and the entry hall was adorned with a "Christmas Tree of Yesterday," decorated by Vickie Matocha of Richmond and
Georgia Funderburk of Del Valle. An antique post card kroj tree (postcards from the Humpola/Stavinoha Post Card Collection of Rosenberg), was the focal point of the Gift Shop and Library and dolls in Czech kroje, provided by Carolyn Meiners of La Grange and Pat Parma of Richmond, added to the holiday atmosphere. "Grandmother's Kitchen" was filled with holiday cakes and candies and a beautiful Czech ornament tree donated by Willa Mae Cervenka of West. The conference room was graced by a Novy Bor Crystal and Poinsettia Tree thanks to Pat Parma of Richmond. The festivities for the day began at 2 p.m. with a house blessing by Monsignor Ben Mazurkiewicz of Fayetteville. As the Fayette Czech singers, accompanied by accordionist Lee Roy Matocha, began to provide musical entertainment, the children were suddenly surprised by the arrival of Svaty Mikulas, the Angel and the Devil (Dan Hrna, Kathy Hanzelka and Lillie Mae Peter, respectively, of Houston). The afternoon continued with a late hayride around the TCHCC site. The rain had let up just enough and the chance was taken that we would not get stuck and we didn't. A Perfect Day! The TCHCC extends its appreciation to all who braved the elements and crowded quarters to attend our first Christmas Open House; but as one person said when he was leaving, the food was good and plentiful, the music was wonderful, the decorations were beautiful, the friendship among all those present was magnificent .. . all in all, a perfect day. Accept the Challenge. Become an SPJST Sales Representative. "Fraternalism has survived because it is good and it deserves to live," according to the authors of The Fraternal Sales Training Program. "Its leaders had a keen realization of the world's need for Fraternalism and the power to see into the future . . . A glorious future looms ahead for the fraternal system with even greater opportunities for serving people, if we accept the challenge and live up to our opportunities."
