Quality Attracts About That Headline The above headline -"Quality Attracts" - could easily have been a lot longer. There just wasn't room! Here's the full-size version, "Quality attracts people - whether your're talking about restaurants, auto repair shops, clothing stores or even fruit stands. Quality merchandise and services generally attract business. The same applies to selling fraternal life insurance and to planning fraternal programming in your local lodge. Quality attracts!" See, that headline would have been way too long! One of the things that I don't believe we can overdo is the amount of emphasis that local lodges give to their fraternal program.

For instance, last fall when I attended Lodge 88, Houston's Czech Day, it was neat to find out that for the day, they had devoted a section of the hall to genealogical research and study. Or recently, when the Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club held its Christmas party, they opted to "go public" and hold their celebration -- including a gift exchange - at the local mall's food court followed by a trip to the movies. That looked like fun! The point is simple: Fraternal activities are what you make them. They can be as dull and routine - or as exciting and novel - as you want them to be. Lodge officers, especially, are key when it comes to establishing an upbeat lodge atmosphere and engaging environment. So, what's on the agenda for your lodge's next meeting? How about this coming year? What is your lodge planning to do that will demonstrate its commitment to the community and to fraternalism in general? If you don't have a ready answer for that question, just look to the Vestnik and see what your fraternal brothers and sisters are doing. And, please, don't stop there. Look outside our fraternal order at other organizations in your community or city. Who's out there making good things happen and what can we learn from them? Talking about issues related to quality and fraternalism in your lodge meetings is good. It can it help rekindle long dormant spirits and make you feel really good about being part of the SPJST and knowing that you can have a positive impact on the quality of life in your community.

"Fraternal activities are what you make them . . . They can be as exciting and novel as you want them to be."

Three Cheers to the Bucket and Washrag Brigade All this talk about quality. Where to start as it applies to local-lodge meetings and projects? How about starting with the meeting place itself? If I'm preaching to the choir, please forgive me; however, sometimes it helps to restate the obvious. Where your lodge meets sends out signals - not only to prospective members but to the current members as well. There's a lot that you can do to ensure that it's the right signal that you want to be conveying. Thanks to you if you're the one who makes sure that the meeting place is warm and inviting and that everything is in its proper place. How could you ask your members to deliberate seriously in a cramped, cold room? . Spic and span is a good start. Where do you take it from there? How about floral arrangements fresh or silk -- on the tables? Maybe a little background music before, and after the meeting... Will the members Members, Reporters, respond? The Plart of the Future Here are some of the features of SPJST's Universal Life contract, which we call our "SPJST Flexible Protector Plan": Step 1: You elect an amount of insurance and select Death Benefit Option A or B (as described below). You can also select the amount of premium you want to pay and make the initial payment.

Step 2:

As each premium is received by SPJST, a small expense charge is deducted and the balance goes into your cash value account.

Step 3: At the beginning of each month, a charge for the life insurance protection is deducted from the cash value to pay the monthly life insurance protection costs.

Step 4:

Interest at current rates is credited to the fund each month.

Coverage is Flexible. You have a choice of two death benefits,

Option A or Option B:

Option A: Level Death Benefit. The death benefit is made up of life insurance and the cash value. Initially, this benefit is equal to the face amount. However, current tax law states that there must always be a certain minimum proportion of life insurance in the certificate. Therefore, as the cash value

approaches the face amount, the death benefit increases automatically. Option

B:

Increasing Death Benefit. The death benefit is equal to the face amount of life insurance protection plus the money in the cash value account.

For more information on the SPJST Universal Life certificate or other financial products, please contact your local lodge sales representative.

SPJST records 2,620 applications written ti'7,zugh December in Vision 2002 program Through the end of December, 2002, the SPJST had received 2,620 applications for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Vision 2002 membership drive was to write at least 2,100 applications in 2002. In conjunction with the SPJST's Vision 2002 program, local lodges were assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quotas were based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through December 3 1, 2002. —SPIST-

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club enjoys Six Flags Dear Vestnik Readers: I'm so-o-o tired. On January 3 and 4, District Three held a lock-in at Lodge 84 and I stayed up until 3 p.m. in the morning playing with my friends. We played a game called Pass the Lifesaver where everyone held a toothpick in their mouth and had to pass a lifesaver from toothpick to toothpick around the circle and without using your hands. Talk about gross! We also played bingo and had a gift exchange called Cops and Robbers. When my mom and dad woke me up at 8:30 a.m., I did not want to get up, but we still had to tackle Holiday in the Park at Six Flags. And it was my eighth birthday, so I wanted to have a great day. Once at Six Flags, we took group pictures, ate lunch, then had a great time riding the Sombrero, the Conquistador, Yosemite Sam's ride, the Mine Train, the Texas Tornado, and all the rides in Looney Tunes
