Let's Take a Closer Look

"Do You Feel Charitable?" is the title of a story that appeared in a recent edition of County Magazine, a bi-monthly publication of the Texas Association of Counties, a statewide service association of Texas counties and county officials. The opening paragraph of the story reads as follows: "County officials all over Texas are grappling with a new state law that allows some nonprofit organizations to qualify for a special property tax break. House Bill 1689, which went into effect in January, gives local taxing entities the option of exempting the property taxes on buildings owned by 'primarily' charitable organizations ... " One of the concerns raised by the article is that granting the new exemption could decrease the amount of funding which school districts receive. According to Comal County Judge Danny Scheel, who is quoted in the County Magazine article, "Somebody is going to have to make up the difference and that is going to be the citizens . . . Those taxes don't just go away."

This same concern was recently voiced to me by a fellow SPJST member, concerned that what would amount to an exemption for our lodges would merely be a shifting of the tax burden to the taxpayers in the school district. That's a valid concern and one which I directed to James Archer, area manager of the Administration Unit for the Property and Tax Division of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts in Austin, Texas. "In the event that the district grants the exemption, the exempted property won't be included in the district's property value study. It's taken off the tax roll completely," Mr. Archer explains. "The exemption would actually reduce the overall ' taxable value of the school district and could result in an increase in M&O (Maintenance and Operation) funding from the state, which could make up for the loss in the local tax paid to the district by the exempt organization. On the other hand, the taxpayers would have to make

Feel Charitable? (Continued from page 2.) up the difference that the exempt organization had been paying toward satisfying the district's long-term debt — such as those expenses incurred when a school bond issue is passed." School districts aren't the only taxing units that could be affected. "Most exemptions shift the burden of taxation to other classes of property due to the reduction in taxable value,"- says Mr. Archer. Even at that, the percentage amount of revenue raised through the taxation of "primarily charitable" groups reflects a minute percentage of the tax collected in any given area. It kind of boils down to this: Before any taxing entity authorizes the exemption, they need to know that your lodge is making a meaningful contribution to the community. That's why every individual local taxing entity — the county, city, school district, hosptial district, water district, library district and so on — must decide to accept the request to grant the tax exemption. An Investment in the Future

In the event that your lodge does receive a property tax exemption, what an excellent opportunity it can be to demonstrate your lodge's fraternal commitment to the community — and more

Consider the goodwill you could build for your local lodge and the SPJST by directing an amount equal to, let's say half of your exemption, to various and worthy school-related organizations? Several groups come to mind, including the PTO (Parent and Teacher Organization), band boosters, and various other athletic and academic oriented groups, including the student council. A few words about student councils: Student councils, like our fraternal lodge officers, are democratically elected by their fellow students. Generally stated, student councils on the junior high and high school levels exist to enhance student life on campus. Activities range from hosting orientation programs for new students and socials to raising money for various school improvements. Speaking from experience, the flow of capital for these student leadership organizations is limited to what they are able to earn though snack sales at sporting events, and various other after-school fundraising projects. What a positive difference our local SPJST lodges could make for these groups in their ability to contribute to the betterment of student life! This bridge of assistance and goodwill could go a long way towards defining the contribution that our lodges play in the community. Please think about it.

The youth club won first place in the Lacks Trim-a-Tree Contest. Several of our youth took part in the Temple Christmas Parade and the Open House at the Home office in December. The SPJST float designed by our members David and Melanie won first place in the Temple and Rosebud Christmas parades. Our Youth Club won second for the most new members enrolled this year-64. We stand justifiably proud for their work. New insurance written for our lodge went to Jacqui Wiest, Jay Ray, Anne Ray, Catherine Porubsky, Darlene Pechal, Harold Vanicek, Jr.,

Jacqueline Nauert, Danny Herndon, Kalen Ashcraft, Cortni Ashcraft, Christina Nauert, Mercedes Martinez, Alxus Cardenas, Manuel Cardenas, Jessica Locklin, and Seth Carpernter. We are indebted to our lodge sales people and members who had referrals —especially the youth club. Keepsake Appreciated A keepsake was given to the lodge by our member, Alvin Dreyer, in the form of a quarter minted the same year that our lodge was chartered1897. Lodge 24 is pleased by the keepsake and thankful to our longstanding member of 96 years. A suitable way to display the coin will be found. The coin also gives the current members a sense of the long history (106 years) of our lodge. A mention was made about the interior painting of the hall. Three bids will be sought. If you are a painting contractor, you want to call the hall phone and leave a message (254) 985-2393. The exemption of ad valorem taxes is moving ahead. Our lodge is striving to be the community center for our area. We feel that we are earning our exemption by the service we do for the area as evidenced by our 35 weekends that were host to wedding receptions, proms, and we furnished the hall free to two churches for their use. We feel that our $4,500 exemption will be replaced to our area by our service. Our lodge had 125 applications written with 117 being issued. Our $2 million dollar man was productive along with several other sales reps. Saturday, February 22 will be the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Banquet at Lodge 47, Seaton. We should hire Brinks for our lodge. Coming Events Next lodge meeting is Sunday, February 9 at 2 p.m. Coming, on Friday, February 14, Brave Combo will play from 9 p.m. to midnight at hall. Karel Jonas, No. 28, East Bernard reports on January meeting Lodge

Dear Members, This next Sunday, the 9th of February, Lodge Karel Jonas will hold its monthly meeting at 2 p.m. in the conference room of the East Bernard Branch Library at 746 Clubside Drive. The agenda will be, again, open to business needing immediate attention plus regular reports. After the meeting, the fraternal hour buffet luncheon will commence. Those, who wish, may bring something for the buffet. January Meeting Report

There was a slight delay in starting the meeting on the 12th. There were some pieces of very oversized machinery being moved on the Highway 90A from FM 1952 at the Tavener Community, east of East Bernard which caused anyone coming in from the east on 90A to be delayed. This writer followed this extra wide "chicken picker" from State Highway 36 on FM 1489 past the junction with FM 1952 and turned off onto one of the county roads to get to a point west of the machinery to get back on 90A to get into East Bernard. It was obvious that this machinery would tie up the intersection of 90A and 1952 for some time. The meeting moved quickly with a good quorum present. Sister Karen Kaspar, the District Six State Field Representative, came to visit with us to report on the success of sales in 2002. She told us we had reached the goal. Also, she told us District Six came in third, statewide. We thank her for visiting with us. The minutes from the two previous meetings along with the two treasurer's reports were given. There was then a motion to accept two new members which were passed. After all door prizes were drawn, the meeting adjourned for the luncheon. In the latter part of December 2002, donations to the following organizations were completed: East Bernard Fire Department, East Bernard EMS,

48, Beyersville reports on January meeting Lodge

The January meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was held on Sunday, January 12 and called to order by President Leona Stalmach. Curtis Stewart led the Pledge of Allegiance. We first discussed the Christmas party, and Leona thanked all of those who helped decorate the hall including Bonnie, Rita, Ruth, Linda, Kayla, and Denisse: During the Christmas party, Santa came to visit when he heard the jolly caroling and especially when the kids were singing, "Here Comes Santa Claus!" Santa gave all of the children a bag with goodies, fruit, and even a toy surprise. Even the adults got a fruit bag from St. Nick. We had a great fried chicken meal with Bonnie and Jody frying the chicken. I think that they might have stolen someone's recipe because it was finger licking good!

We decided to book December 14, 2003 for our Christmas party this year. If you missed out last year, start planning to join us now. We accepted three new members— Rebecca Rodriguez and Jonathan Cruz (Bobby and Ruth's grandkids) and Curtis Stewart. Bobby reminded us to give any leads on new members to Curtis or himself as Curtis will soon be selling insurance, too. Wow, That's Amazing! We are pleased to announce that two of our members have reached a milestone with 50 years of membership. Ruth Bibb and Jerry Turek are those members. We will discuss plans regarding this at the next meeting. We received a letter from the Supreme Lodge informing us that the lodge had reached the First Step Award. We also received information about the SPJST Education and Nature Center. We tabled discussing this until the next meeting. We were also honored with the presence of several guests. Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar was present to install the newly-elected officers. Preston A Hegar (Taylor Rodeo Association), Ronnie Michna (Taylor Jaycees), Tamara Suchomel (4-H), Tracy Gardner (Coupland Volunteer Fire Department), and Diane Volek (S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor) were all present to accept donations to their worthy causes. All of these organizations do wonderful volunteer and outreach programs. If you have the chance to support them during their fund raiser, you would be helping them help others. Happy birthday to us. Yes, Beyersville will be turning 100 this year. No, not the building, but the charter. We hope to have the hall as complete as possible in time for this celebration. Finally, the sandwiches this month were provided by yours truly with the other members pitching in with desserts and chips. Bobby and Ruth will prepare some good homemade deer chili for next month. If we are as cold as we were this month, it will warm us right up. Join us—we would love to have you. The next meeting is February 9 at 3 p.m. Fraternally yours, Denisse L. Wuensche Reporter SPJST-

Corpus Christi Circle of Women reports on January meeting We held our January meeting on the second Thursday of the month, January 9, 2003 rather than the first, as the first Thursday fell on January 2, and we felt that it was too close to the new year for everyone to be able to make the meeting. Even at that, we had a pretty low turnout—only 23

people, including guests. Those of us able to attend were again welcomed into a room with lovely table decorations, set up by our own Dorothy McCoy. We had New Year's party hats, beads, feathers, and noisemakers (much to the consternation of some who were startled by the sounds they made!). Dorothy really has a talent and gift for decorating, as well as a big heart! Thanks again, Dorothy! We were sorry to hear that many of our members had been ill with pneumonia over the past months, including Anna Marie Moss, Clem Kasparek, Lera Nemecek, who was unable to be at this meeting, and Kitty Norell. Hopefully, that is all behind us, and the coming months will bring health and good cheer in 2003! Edna Voldan and her group, Lov'n Stitches, make lap robes for people in nursing homes or in hospital, and she said that she has three with her today if anyone needs one. It is really great to have such caring folks in our midst; keep up the good work, ladies. Jitro Girls Choir Performs in March Jerry Elzner reminded us of the arrival in March of the Jitro Girls Choir from the Czech Republic. He would like as many of us as are able to offer to take in one or two girls for their three-day stay in Corpus Christi, making them feel at home in a strange land and showing them some of the sights in our fair town. They will be here to perform in the Cathedral Concert Series. The Cathedral pro-

vides great acoustics for musical performances of all types. Jerry also mentioned that the Southern District of Sokol will hold its SLET here in June, and that on August 2 the Texas State Czech Heritage Society and Texas State Genealogical Society will hold their meeting here in Corpus Christi. This is a great opportunity for any genealogy buffs in the area to do research on their ancestors. as the Genealog, ical Society v, ill have its books available for anyone to peruse. After we gave out door prizes, we recited our motto then enjoyed a deli cious lunch. We certainly have some excellent cooks in our group! Happy New Year! Fraternally, Becky Elzner —SPJST--

Sister Alice Roberts delivered the Christmas gift to Sister Anne Zvolanek who is in a nursing home in Plano, Texas. "Happy Birthday" was sung to December birthday sisters. We thank Libbie Vrla who made the lovely red felt poinsettias for Christmas decorations. Vlasta Laznovsky helped Libbie Vrla decorate the lovely tables. Frances Vinkler donated tea. Lucy Honza was the lucky winner of the quilt that was quilted by several sewing circle members. A Christmas money gift was given to the sewing circle officers, kitchen care and reporter. Thanks a lot. Everyone enjoyed the delicious Christmas dinner catered by Lil and Larry Laznovsky. Mrs. Viola Anderly, of Phoenix, Arizona won a trip. She visited her sister Libbie Elsik of Dallas. Fort Worth Friendship Club reporter spends two weeks in Czech Republic A reminder that the members of the Fort Worth Friendship Club will meet on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at St. Thomas Parish 11 at 10:30 a.m. We didn't meet in January so it will be nice to see all of you again. February is a designated month in which we bring "little gifts" to exchange, and also, don't forget your covered dish for the luncheon. Our hostesses will be Camille Bolcer. Nettie Naugle, Rose Romeo, and Dorothy Way. I have just returned from spending two weeks in the Czech Republic with the Dallas-Brno Sister City group and had a delightful time. We flew into Prague, changed planes and flew into Ostrava which is in the northern part of Moravia. We were disappointed that there wasn't any snow, but there were some ice patches, and it was cold with the temperature being in the 16 degrees F range. Then each day, it dropped a few degrees, but with our layers of warm clothes, we stayed warm. We stayed in the charming Hotel Gong in Stramberk which is up in the mountains, and while there, we toured Dr. Simicek's Texas museum in Lichnov which is dedicated to all those who immigrated from Moravia to Texas. A couple of the men who toured Texas from Frenstat were our guides during our stay in the area. On Sunday, following Mass at the church in Stramberk, we traveled to Rosnov and toured the Wallachian Village which is an outdoor museum, or skanzen. This is a national cultural memorial which consists of a group of romantic wooden folk buildings from the 20th century made by brothers Jaronka who admired the Wallachian folk culture. It was very cold walking around but some hot "grog" and wine with honey warmed us up real fast. Christmas Concert Later, we attended a Christmas concert at St. John Baptist Church in Frenstat and in the evening were entertained in Frenstat with dinner, a rope and whip performance and Wallachian dance group. It was most enjoyable visiting with the various members that toured Texas and their families and I even learned some new Czech words in our conversations. In the area we visited the Tonak Hat Museum in Novy Jicin, Museum at Frenstat, Crystalex Sklo-Crystal factory in Karolinka, Christmas decoration factory in Vsetin, sampled slivovice at a private Slivovice Company, and enjoyed a Czech style pig roast at Verovice's Dolni Dvar restaurant and visited the church of the priest who came to Texas. He was so proud to show off his new Italian marble altar and wooden manger display. Before leaving Stramberk, we had six inches of snow, and the thermometer outside our hotel showed that it was six degrees F. In leaving, the beautiful Beskydy Mountains were covered in snow and believe we had the best bus driver in the . Czech Republic. We had no trou-

Evelyn Mikeska Honored When members of Lodge 196, Houston-West held their annual Member Appreciation Celebration on November 24, the SPJST Insurance Department took it as an opportunity to present Sister Evelyn Mikeska with a plaque, marking her more than 40 years of service to the SPJST a sales representative, district and lodge officer. Pictured above, with Sister Mikeska, seated, are SPJST District Five State Representative Lynn Johnsen, Supreme Lodge President Howard Leshikar and District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt. ble going down, but all the big trucks couldn't make it up the mountains. On the way to Brno, we toured the Bata Shoe Factory in Zlin as they still have a small production line and were able to make some purchases, and we toured the Shoe Museum. Mr Bata's office had been in a large corner elevator so that he could stop and work on each floor of his building. Another "cold" moment was on top of the building outside his elevator to view the city of Zlin from all sides of the building. We also toured the magnificent pilgrimage site in Velehrad. Brno Tour Fair We attended the opening of the Brno's annual Region Tour Fair which is represented by all the regions of the Czech Republic and all their4Sister Cities of which Dallas is one. We met Mayor Duchon where he was presented a Texas style hat by Edwin Hlavaty and later enjoyed lunch with his staff. While in E: ), we had a walking

tour of the town square, visited Spilberk Castle, visited the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul and saw the Mummies. In the area, we toured Alfons Mucha's Slavonic epopee artwork at Mora ysky Krumlov, another Slivovice Company, Valtice Castle and enjoyed goulash and wine at a winery with lively music, and toured the Mora y sky Karst, the "Carlsbad Caverns of Moravia". The Melodian Band came to Brno and played for us at "The Corner" restaurant. On Sunday, Edwin Hlavaty and Carolyn Vavra of Caldwell, Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger of Dallas, and I traveled to Zadverice and attended a church service at the Brethren church up on the hill. (I believe all churches are always up on the hill.) Edwin, Carolyn, and Joe had family from the area, and while walking the cemetery, I found three Vrla markers. My Grandfather Vrla was from Luzkovitze which is the next village over so they may be my relatives. It was a beautiful little church. Edwin

taped the service, and a thermometer inside the church showed five degrees F. Of course, it was even colder walking around in the cemetery which, was higher on the hill with patches of ice and snow and the wind was blowing. Later, we enjoyed a slivovice toast, hot tea, and holiday cookies in the home of the Ehrenbergers' friend. Our group of six—Merlene Bravenec and Evelyn Jez of Temple, Joe and Joyce Ehrenberger of Dallas, Sylvia Laznovsky of Ennis and I stayed in Prague for a few days where we attended the Opera "Certova Stena"—Devil's Wall—at the beautiful National Theater, toured Tyrs of Dum and were told of how high the water level was during the flood. The Patace has since been restored, but the gym is still under repairs and, of course, they do not have the money to complete the project. In Prague, all of us stayed in an apartment on Wenceslas Square which had all the modern conveniences except a telephone. We had a kitchen complete with built-in refrigerator, stove, dish washer, tile bathrooms, living room, bedrooms, and internet downstairs where Merlene and Joyce sent and received mail everyday. Sylvia Laznovsky and I traveled to the Tabor area to visit the Filip family, my Dad's cousins, in Sudomerice u Bechyne, mother's relatives, the Joseph Patril family at Nucize, a Laznovsky family at Pysely, Trojacek family at Radetice and while here, I met another cousin, the Filip's grandson, and got to meet his family. This young couple with two children had a very pretty and new "picture book" home. It was so beautifully decorated. The food everywhere was great, and I really enjoyed all the roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut. I probably didn't gain any weight as I walked it off. The weather in Prague was in the 40s and much warmer than in Texas, I hear. A Great Trip All in all, it was a great trip. Tim Orsak did a super job in planning the events and all our meals, and it was most enjoyable to meet and make new (friends who were in our group. I hear that everyone made it home safely, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the photo party. Friendship Club members, see you February 5, 2003. Libbie Vrla, Reporter -SPJST-

9, Snook Youth Club member offers healthy advice Lodge

Dear Vestnik Readers, This is for all those who made a New Year's resolution to lose weight. My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 now and we don't know where she is ! I joined a health club last year, spent about 400 bucks. Haven't lost a pound. Apparently you have to show up. I have to exercise in the morning before my brain figures out what I'm doing. I don't exercise at all. If God meant us to touch our toes, he would have put them further up our body. I have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them. I like long walks, especially when they are taken by people who annoy me. The advantage of exercising every day is that you die healthier. If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country. I don't jog. It makes the ice jump right out of my glass. Look Who's Here — It's Santa! Lodge 47, Seaton Youth Club members extend a heroes welcome to Santa Claus at the Lodge 47, Seaton Christmas party held December 8 at Star Hall. "We went outside and broke a Christmas piñata, then we ate Mexican food and had ice cream for dessert," reports Youth Leader Heidi Bartek.

Dear Readers, Wow! I had so much at the lock-in at Lodge 84, Dallas on January 3 and 4. We played games and ate a lot of food. When it was time for bed I realized just how cold it was on the floor, but I was so tired that I fell right to sleep. The next morning, they used a plan to wake us up. We ate breakfast, and my mom drove my sisters and Ito Six Flags. We had a long day. We got to ride The Shockwave three times in a row. But then I my stomach began to hurt. When I felt better, my mom bought us a funnel cake. The best thing was seeing all of my friends from camp. Fraternally yours, Ashley Andreason 2/5/03 —SPJST-
