SPJST LAM dedicates reading room in memory of Svatava Jakobson The Svatava P. Jakobson Reading Room, the newest addition to the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum was dedicated at a special ceremony in Temple, Texas on Sunday afternoon, March 9. The SPJST LAM is located at the SPJST Home Office at 520 North Main Street. The reading room honors Svatava P. Jakobson, distinguished educator and musicologist, who died in September 2000. The room is fitted with furnishings, art, artifacts, and memorabilia from Professor Jakobson's home in Austin and will serve as a research area for scholars working with the LAM's collection. Among the special guests in attendance at the dedication ceremony were Ms. Jakobson's nephew, Michal Basch and his wife, Marcela, of the Svatava Jakobson Czech Republic. A Home With Character From 1968 to 1992, Ms. Jakobson made her home in a limestone cottage on River Hills Road outside Austin in

the Texas Hill Country. The house, completely renovated by Jakobson, had a personality that was distinctly hers. It was filled with furnishings, folk art, and artifacts from around the world, but particularly from her beloved Czechoslovakia. The house, with its garden, became the scene of intellectual and social gatherings for Dr. Jakobson's colleagues, students, new Texas acquaintances, and Czech friends from abroad. An Active Life Ms. Jakobson was professor of Czech studies at the University of Texas at Austin for 11 years from 1968 to 1979. After her retirement as professor emeritus, she continued to mentor students of Czech language, literature, and culture. During her 25 years in Texas, Professor Jakobson was an inspiration to academics interested in Czech subjects as well as to Texas-Czechs with an interest in cultural preservation. Born in Vienna, Austria, March 19, 1908, Svatava was an avid lifelong collector of books, art, and music of particular interest were folk art and folk music. Early on, these interests led to her graduate work at Charles University in Prague that culminated in a dissertation on Moravian folk (Continued on page 3.)

Make

Yourself at Home!

Fitted with furnishings, art, artifacts, and memorabilia from Professor Jakobson's Austin home, the Svatava Jakobson Reading Room will serve as an inviting research venue for scholars utilizing the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum collection. Austin architect Roger Kolar, a longtime friend of the late Dr. Jakobson, oversaw the installation of the room and served as master of ceremonies for the dedication.

Two Key ingredients As much as I like to eat barbecue, I've never been much of a cooker. To be really good at anything — whether it's barbecuing or building a successful fraternal program — takes desire and commitment. Now, just because I don't fancy myself as a cooker, that doesn't mean I don't enjoy helping out at cookouts or cook-offs. It can be fun. You don't have to run the show to be an important part of the process. Building a strong fraternal program works the same way! While active participation in your local lodge is not a requirement, it is active participation that brings life and vitality to your lodge and to the SPJST. Once again, you don't have to run the show to be an important part of the process. As important as the sale of life insurance is to our Society, it isn't balance sheets alone that make the SPJST story worth telling. It's the stories of men, women and children whose lives have been enriched as a result of active participation. At its best, the lodge experience can become a form of self-expression as well as an extension of a member's social and community life.

That's an awesome obligation for a lodge to fulfill and to maintain! But it happens! In many parts of the state, the SPJST is known as much for its contributions to celebrating Czech heritage and culture and contributing to the quality of life as it is for life insurance. Not surprising is the fact that many of our top-producing lodges — in terms of insurance sales — are those which promote strong fraternal programs and partnerships within the community. Fraternalism is all about working together to achieve common goals and to make life better for our fellow man. In the words of author and volunteer leader Shar McBee, "It is in giving that we receive . . . If we want people to follow us, we have to meet them where they are. Leading them means helping them fulfill their needs." Even if you've never been involved in your local lodge, please give it a chance. Honestly, I don't know of a single lodge officer out there who wouldn't welcome having a few new hands on deck. Most, I believe, are ready to welcome new volunteers with open arms. —SPJST-

Reading Room (Continued from page 1.) music. At the University, she met and married Roman Jakobson, founder of the Prague Linguistic Circle, who would receive international recognition as a linguist and scholar. Svatava's fieldwork in folk music and ethnography took her to Poland, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Rumania. In 1939, the impending Nazi takeover forced her and her husband to leave the University of Brno and escape to Denmark. They stayed there briefly, fleeing ahead of the Nazi armies into Norway where they endured train bombings, hiding in the mountains, and sleeping in a hay barn. Crossing a bridge into Sweden in a horse-drawn sleigh, the Jakobson's were briefly jailed and finally reached Stockholm in May 1940. Still in peril, they sought the help of the American Ambassador and eventually acquired the papers that would permit them to leave for the United States. As Roman taught linguistics at Columbia, Harvard, and MIT, Svatava was a lecturer in Czech language and Slavic folklore at Harvard. She continued her interest in folk music, working with John Lomax, and his son, Alan, who was curator of the Archive of American Folksong of the Library of Congress While in New York, she wrote a regular column for Czech immigrants for the newspaper, Nove-Yorkse Listy, and in the late 1940s, served as editorin-chief of the magazine, America, a state department publication. In 1967, after she and Roman had divorced, Svatava came to teach for a year in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of Texas at Austin. Captivated by the Czech communities in East Central Texas, she chose to make Austin her home, teaching Czech language and literature at UT for a decade, researching the culture of the Moravian immigrants to texas, and gaining a reputation throughout the state for her scholarship and involvement. Despite her status as a naturalized citizen of the United States since 1952, Svatava was denied a visa for. visit to her beloved Czechoslovakia until 1968 when a liberalization of the communist regime occurred there. During her visit 'that year, she was temporarily trapped in Prague when

Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces invaded the country. In the chaos, she escaped to the West and returned to AuStin to continue her teaching career. Fdr the 1976 bicentennial celebration, Svatava was asked by the Smithsonian Institution to arrange and coordinate participation of all Eastern European countries in the folk festival on the National Mall. After her retirement from the University of Texas in 1978, Svatava continued to work with students, monitoring their projects and extending her own ethnographic studies of the Texas Czechs. She donated more than 3,000 books, hundreds of tapes and recordings and a vast collection of Czech newspapers to University of Texas libraries. . In 1993, she received the Texas Czech Heritage Award for her contributions to the preservation and promotion of Czech heritage in the state. About the SPJST LAM The SPJST Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) in Temple, Texas is a "must-see" for visitors to the city and state. Minnie Pokorny Achieves the Grand Age of 96 he SPJST congratulates Sister Minnie (Novosad) Pokorny of Lodge 29, Taylor, who celebrated her 96th birthday on December 4, '2002. As such, Sister Pokorny is entitled to all SPJST member benefits with no further dues or assessments required. Minnie (Novosad) Pokorny was born December 4, 1906 in Bartlett, Texas to parents Josef Novosad and Rosie Zavodny Novosad. She had four brothers and nine sisters. She married Frank Pokorny February 24, 1925 in Granger Brethren Church. They have one child, Velma Jean Pokorny Kubala; grandchild, Dawn Urbanek Gordon of Georgetown; and great-grandchildren, Weston Alan and Wade Austin Urbanek, all of Georgetown. Minnie and Frank farmed all of their lives. When first married, they lived in the Polanka community, south of Taylor. They moved to the Circleville community, five miles south of Granger, in 1945 until retirement at which time they moved to Taylor. They enjoy dominoes and visiting with friends. Minnie loved to quilt. She gave nieces and nephews quilts for weddings. She even left quilts to be given to her great-grandsons when they marry. Now, she loves to play straight dominoes. "She's hard to beat," says her daughter, Velma Pokorny Kubala. "She plays slowly, but almost always comes up with a count!" Again, the SPJST extends its congratulations and appreciation to Sister Pokorny for her dedication to the SPJST. —SPJST-

Join Hands Day—June 21 I encourage all youth clubs and lodges to start thinking about a project for Join Hands Day on Saturday, June 21. This is a great day of giving, caring and sharing. Join Hands Day is a fun experience that helps individuals change the way they think about peo ple of other generations. The event is sponsored by America's Fraternal Benefit Societies. Register your project at www.joinhandsday.org and your project will be eligible for the National Excellence Awards, including 20 prizes of $1,000. Thirty-one Words by D. K. Webb You learned them as a child—when you were too young and too naive to understand their promise . . . their demands. You recited them morning after morning, year after year, never realizing the price that the proud revolutionists paid to make them real and the price our brave contemporaries would pay to keep them real. But now that we're grown, we realize that we are the ones responsible— the ones upon whose shoulders rest the honor, the charge, the privilege of sustaining their legacy for generations to come. I pledge allegiance to the flag . . . For tiny babies just born, who sleep in innocence through the long night of freedom's fight. For old men who sit on porches remembering their battles as they watch younger patriots now bear arms.

District Two Youth Counselor reports on recent activities Dear Members, What fantastic turnouts we had for our two big activities in February. On February 2, 2003, we had our annual District Two skating party at Skate Haven in Temple. 120 members enjoyed skating while 35 non-skaters seemed to enjoy visiting. We had excellent skaters — no accidents! Ten of our 11 youth clubs were represented. Many door prizes were given and, of course, the traditional $1 was given to each youth member for the traditional stop at McDonald's. Thank you to all who attended. The District Two Lock-in, normally held in November, was postponed due to various reasons. It was held on Saturday, February 15, 2003. We thank Lodge 47, Seaton for the use of their hall. We had a great turnout of 60-plus youth and 12 chaperones. It was so good to see so many youth. It doubled our expectations. There were many new faces. I do how you have asked your friends to join SPJST. As usual, we had a great time eating, playing games, and watching movies. Thank you, Janet, for the great scavenger hunt. Everyone looks forward to Janet's clues. Thanks to Joe and Pam Morris, and Heidi Bartek for cooking those delicious hamburgers. It was good to have our State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny and husband, David come visit us. Thank you for joining us and also for the door prizes. Youth, you were all so good. Aren't these sleepless nights fun? Does it get you ready for camp? I hope everyone enjoyed these activities, and I am looking forward to a great SPJST summer. Sheila and George Krenek are proud parents and Ginger and John Roberts are proud grandparents. Evelyn Slovak and Dorothy Kudrna, daughters of Albie Nesuda, donated two quilt tops to Ennis Sewing Circle. These were made by Albie Nesuda, prior to her death in 1998. Albie was a lifelong member of the Ennis Sewing Circle. Somehow, I have misplaced some of my notes or lost them. Maybe I will be able to locate them. Our next meeting will be held April 10, 2003.
