Wow! 100 Pennies Scholarship Drive donations top $22,000 March
31, 2003 marked the end of a very successful year for the SPJST 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive and the SPJST Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donations totaled over $22,000—the largest amount ever collected. This represents the equivalent of 22 $1,000 scholarships and does not include the cash stipend extended by the SPJST Supreme Lodge for the Scholarship Program. This success is a credit to each of you. Thanks to all of the lodges and districts that held fund raisers for the fund. Thanks to each of you who donated. Through the end of March, 1,065 donations totalling $22,014.33 were made. The total eclipses this year's goal of $15,000 and outdistances the amount collected last year by more than 20 percent! Thank you for your generous donations. Because of your continued generosity, many young SPJST members will be able to attend or continue with college. While this posting concludes the 2002-2003 100 Pennies Scholarship Fund Drive, donations, including memorials, are gratefully accepted

Lodge pays tribute to Stanley Broz Supreme
District Four Director and SPJST Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman Stanley Broz knew something was up when he looked across the room and saw two young ladies smiling at him. It was Wednesday night, April 9 and members of the Supreme Lodge — in town for their quarterly meeting — were dining out at the Beef Barn in nearby Morgan's Point. "It took a while for it to register — then all of a sudden I realized the two ladies were my granddaughters," recalls Stanley. The girls, Shawna Broz and Roxie Halfmann, along Stanley Broz with other family members, were on hand to join Supreme Lodge members and 'mark Brother Broz's 30 years of service as SPJST District Four Director. "That really surprised me," says Brother Broz, a semi-retired farmer and rancher, who has served in the director's spot since 1972. Stanley's father, the late R.E. "Bob" Broz held the District Four director's seat from 1960
through 1970. Ten counties comprise the district: Baylor, Foard, Haskell, Jones, Knox, Lubbock, Lynn, Runnels, Tom Green and Wichita Counties. It's a big area, acknowledges Brother Broz and one which he has been happy to serve. "My greatest joy as a director is knowing that I have been able to help a lot of younger folks — some older ones too — to buy a farm or home. That's a good feeling," he says. "The life insurance, too . . . That's always been important," says Brother Broz. "You know you're doing good when you provide someone with adequeate coverage." Without question, life insurance is a subject that Stanley and his wife of 52 years, Martha, know a lot about. Martha, who has been a perennial top-producing SPJST sales representative, and Stanley have been an inseparable team when it comes to promoting membership in the Society. "Things have changed a lot in just these past 30 years," observes Brother Broz. "While we still have active lodges, we don't have the kind of involvement that we did a generation ago. There are just so many activities competing for everyone's time. "Our fraternal challenge is to keep the lodge experience meaningful for (Continued on page 3.)

While the SPJST has always been a top priority for Brother Broz, it hasn't kept him from being a key player in other areas of the community. A veter an of WWII and the Korean War, Brother Broz is past commander and quartermaster of his local Veterans of Foreign Wars post, a longtime director of the Concho . County Junior Livestock Show, former director of the Lowake Co-Op Gin, past member of the Paint Rock Independent School District and past director of the Concho County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. He remains an active supporter of the Lowake Community Center and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Martha; sons: Carl and Gary; daughter Debbie; their spouses; and nine grandchildren. Son, Gary and his wife, Georgia, make their home in Port Lavaca where Gary serves as city manager. Daughter, Debbie and her two children live in College Station where she works for a bank. Son, Carl, his wife, Cassie and their five children are closest, making their home in Veribest, just east of San Angelo where Carl farms and ranches. All are members of SPJST Lodge 160, San Angelo. - Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer of Floresville gives Brother Broz high marks for his dedication to the SPJST. "I've always enjoyed working with Stanley both in the board room and on various loan projects in his district. He brings an incredible wealth of real estate knowledge and leadership to his position as Director and as Supreme Lodge Vice Chairman," says Brother Bayer. "We're very fond of Martha, too," he adds. "We had her come down for Stanley's recognition party and celebrated her birthday at the same time. It was a great evening." —SPJST-

48, Beyersville reports on April meeting Lodge
The April Meeting of Lodge 48, Beyersville was held on April 13, 2003 at 3:30 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Rita Kelm. We were blessed with many members and friends attending the meeting. Our lodge is growing by leaps and bounds as we accepted ten new members this month. Whoohoo! We met our goal already, and we have so many prospects yet to come. Congratulations to the sales reps and to the hall. Our new members are Johnny and Juanette Susan as well as their four grandchildren, Lisa Wuensche, Amy Wuensche, Scott Patrenella, and Bradley Roeglin. Leona also recognized several of the persons who have purchased the old tables and made donations to the hall—Karl and Sherry Wuensche, Charles and Alice Wuensche, Jerry Turek family, Sid Srnensky, Craig Alberts family, and David Roznovak family. We would like to thank these folks for helping us not only to clean out the hall, but also to clean up the hall by using this money towards the purchase of new tables. Bobby brought us up to date on the • 100-year celebration to be held on October 19. Fritz Hodde will be playing, so put on your polka shoes and come on out and join us for a great time. We still would like to get as many pictures from anyone who has them. These pictures would be of the hall in its past life. Please contact Leona Stalmach; or Bobby or Ruth Wuensche ASAP if you can share some of your pictures.
Lodge 48 Beyersville consignment auction May 24 SPJST Lodge 48, Beyersville will have a consignment auction on Saturday, May 24, 2003 as a fund raiser to help continue the renovation of the lodge hall. If you have an item around your farm or home that you would like to sell, plan on bringing it to our consignment auction. We will accept tractors, cars, trucks, trailers, farm implements, primitives, as well as, usable household appliances. Please call Bobby Wuensche (512) 365-3013 as soon as possible so we can have an idea of what we will have at the sale and can then get some advertisements into the papers. We are asking folks to donate the normal commission charge to the hall or more if you wish to do so. You will be allowed to set a minimum selling price if so desired. Some items already committed are a single row horse drawn planter; cultivator; one-way plows; walk-behind plows; a piece of history called hilldrops, manufactured by Carl A. Johnson and Sons of Thrall; and an old kerosene kitchen stove that was used in most homes before propane and natural gas came into use. Please help us with our continued efforts on the restoration project of Beyersville hall by supporting our consignment sale. Fraternally, Bobby Wuensche .—SPJST-
It's Auction Time! The consignment auction has been set for Memorial Day weekend. It will begin the early morning around 10 or 11 a.m. We will need a lot of volunteers for this to be a success. If you can help run a refreshment stand, watch for bids, carry items to and from the auction area, or perform clerical duties, please contact Bobby right now. Today is not too soon. We presented Doris Weisner with her Lifetime Achiever award. Doris has been an integral part of the lodge as far back as this reporter can remember. Doris can boast of three lovely daughters who have all been a part of the youth club. Doris will be witnessing as her great-grandson becomes a member of the new and improved Beyersville Youth Club.
Here's Patsy! District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky attended the meeting to encourage our lodge to get a youth club started. After much discussion, we had several members who were willing to assist the youth leader, but no one to take the reins. After bounding and gagging this reporter, the membership voted to upgrade my duties to . . . to-da — Youth Leader Extraordinaire. I refused to give up the reporter role to anyone who will not promise to entertain you with the many happenings at the lodge. This will npt be too hard though as the material just writes
6/VESTN1K—Wednesday, April 23, 2003 itself. So, here is a call out to all members who have children or grand children or maybe great-grandchildren between the ages of six and 17. The Easter bunny made his way to our lodge during our meeting. We had more than 30 children greeting him. While some children were a little timid, the others were happy to greet him. The Easter bunny had a really cool bubble-blowing device. He left a tremendous amount of eggs behind and even some special eggs•. The Easter bunny also brought some books and stuffed animals for all of the children. The Easter bunny asked that we thank the Thrall 4-H Club, Bonnie Wolf, Denisse Wuensche, and Ellen Hannigton for their special help. The next meeting will be held on Mother's Day at 3 p.m. We will be discussing moving the meeting time down to 5-ish. We will also be putting finishing touches on the auction, 50year member celebration and hopefully, accepting you as a new member. Come join us! Denisse Wuensche Reporter —SPJST-

Competition both fierce and friendly at Lodge 142, Houston's Fourth Annual Barbecue Cookoff Under gray and rainy skies, the fourth annual SPJST Lodge 142, Houston Barbecue Cook-off got underway Friday, March 28, 2003. Although set-up was officially sched-
uled to begin after 9 a.m., the first teams started to arrive at 7:45 a.m. in order to pick the perfect spot for cooking, dancing, laughing, and, of course, scoping the competition. With 15 cooking teams entered this year, space was sure to be limited and competition fierce. This year, teams included those from as far west as San Antonio, Texas and a potato salad entry from as far north as Fort Worth, Texas. Many veterans of the SPJST Lodge 142, Houston Barbecue Cook-off returned this year, including last year's Master Cook winners High Caliber Cooks, formerly known as The Hog Leg Cookers. Other returning teams included CCOP, Rockin' K Cookers, Asleep At The Pit, Christian's Tailgate Cookers, Po Boy's Barbecue, formerly known as Ma and Paw Cookers, and Czech Player Cookers, who made it back this year after the recovery of Dennis Hermis from a heart attack that kept the team out of last year's competition. Without cookers such as these returning, there would be no reason to continue the yearly tradition of fun, food, and friends.
The Night Before Friday night, the crowd was warmed with a community fire, thanks to a generous donation of wood from Lee Pflughaupt, a member of SPJST Lodge 88, Houston, and the Hard Heads cooking team who made its first appearance in the cook off this year. At the cookers' meeting, each participant was surprised with an apron donated from the SPJST Home Office. Each team captain was presented with an SPJST hat also donated from the Home Office. Later in the evening, the music of the G-man and the Enforcers entertained those who could, pull themselves away from the pit long enough.
The Day of the Event The sun finally broke through the clouds shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday while the judges were busy picking the best four of 17 potato salads. As containers were passed from one judge to the next, it was tough to see if any clear favorite would be chosen. Meanwhile in the cooking area, teams were busy preparing their pinto bean entries while guests could be seen dancing, drinking, and having a grand time. Although the wind was quite strong, it did little to weaken the spirits of the young and the young at heart. Everywhere you looked, someone was seen smiling and having a great time. This year's barbecue cook-off brought the Red River Shooters cooking team to Houston from San Antonio. It was the first year the team took part in the festivities. When asked why the team made such a long trip, team captain Kenny Corley simply replied "to have a good time with family and friends, and to meet new people." Charlie Raschke, team captain from the Three Blind Vato's cooking team, stated his team participated this year as a favor to longtime friends Ruth Kieschnick and Nancy Whitchurch. First-time participants The Hard Heads cooking team member Lee Pflughaupt said his team joined the fun in order to support the lodge, share camaraderie among friends and family, and to have a gen-

Lodge 142, Houston-West Presents Scenes from Barbecue Cook-Off March 28, 2003 • Part I
"This our favorite cook-off," says Troy Neuman, captain of the High Caliber Cookers of the Lodge 142 event. "It's well put together thanks to the hard work of Nancy Whitchurch and friends." Speaking of Nancy, here she is enjoying a waltz with the High Caliber Cookers team member.

eral good time. CCOP, a pioneering team for the SPJST Lodge 142 Barbecue cook-off shared these thoughts on the event. "We, along with others, started this cook-off in 2000 in order to give friends and family the chance to bond and share memories in a clean fun-filled family ori ented environment. Everyone has a good time with the friendly competition. We started the cook-off for that purpose, and that is why we continue to participate in it." Troy Neuman, the High Caliber Cookers team captain, shared similar sentiments. "This is our favorite cook-off. We come out and enjoy the people, food, beer, and fun. There once was a time when we did one cook-off per year. Last year, we got nvolved with SPJST Lodge 142's cook-off and had a great time. It's well put together thanks to the hard work of Nancy Whitchurch and friends, and we just simply enjoy the weekend. If not for Nancy, we would not continue to be apart of the cookoff. Last year, we won Master Cook, so we had to come back and defend the title this year. Win or lose though, we're going to have a good time." American patriotism was highly displayed with American flags flying and "Support Our Troops" signs. "We fly our flag because we are proud to be Americans and to show support and respect for our troops in Iraq and all over the world," said Dyn-o-mite cookers' team member, Jeff Spears. Meanwhile, cookers prepared their meat entries, chicken, ribs, and brisket. The aroma filled the air and caused a craving from down deep in the stomach that reached miles away. Everywhere one looked, cookers could be seen marinating, moping, and slicing to perfection. Total prize money this year reflected the increase in the number of teams. With $1,545 on the line, every team was determined to take home a piece of that pie. First through fourth places would take home a share of the money in all categories, but the money would also be accompanied by a trophy in all the meat categories. Awards Presentation By 4:30 p.m., it was time for the awards. The judging team, once again headed up by David Willguss, had finished all the hard work and was ready to announce the winners. The awards started with the potato salad category: fourth place—Czech Players; third place—Coyote Cookers; second place—Asleep At The Pit; and first place, Po' Boy's Cooking Team. The Pinto Bean category produced some new winners along with some old favorites: fourth place, Dyn-o-mite cookers; third place—CCOP; second place—Hard Head Cookers; and first place—Asleep At The Pit. The meat categories were up next. Chicken would be the first to be awarded: fourth place—Taste Of Texas Cookers; third place-3-D Cookers; second place—High Caliber Cookers; and first place—Po' Boy Cookers. Ribs were up next as the tension built: fourth place—Chasin' Tail Cookers; third place—High Caliber Cookers; second place-3-D Cookers; and first place—Three Blind Vato's Cookers. Finally, it was time for the Brisket: fourth place—Rockin' K Cookers;
third place—Three Blind Vato's Cookers; second place—High Caliber Cookers; and first place—Asleep At The Pit. This year a new award was given. This award was given to the team who placed fifth in the Brisket category. The thinking behind it was simple— the team wasn't first, the team wasn't last, the team was just "somewhere in the middle." This year that distinction went to Chasin' Tale Cookers who celebrated like they'd just won a million dollars. Finally, the Master Cook award was given. This year, one point separated the first and second place teams. This year's Master Cook award went to Asleep At The Pit. Even though the weather tried its best to damper the mood of the weekend, the good times prevailed. This year was the biggest cook-off so far, and next year promises to be even better. Thank you to the teams and cookers who took part in this year's event. If you were unable to attend this year, please make plans to join us next year. Respectfully, Nancy Whitchurch Barbecue Coordinator —SPJST-

Circle of Women report on April meeting As has become her custom, Dorothy McCoy and her Easter bunny helpers had the Sokol Hall decorated with bunnies and eggs galore for our meeting. Dorothy has a special talent for decorating, and must have an incredible knack for organizing, too, as she seems to have an inexhaustible supply of decorations for any and every occasion. Another huge thanks to her and her helpers. She also had a beautiful Easter egg wreath that she had made, and we put that up as a special prize drawing item. Margaret Kolodziej also contributed a darling Easter bunny birdhouse which we also put up as a special prize drawing. We began the meeting with a moment of silence in memory of member Lera Nemecek who passed away on March 31, 2003 after a battle with cancer. Our sympathies to Joe, her husband, who is also a member of our Circle. It was decided that we would send our memorial donation to the Sokol general fund. A donation to the Circle was taken up from members in Lera's memory, and those donations were given by Norma Baker, Ella Simcik, Dorothy McCoy, Becky Elzner, Marion Peterek, Margaret Kolodziej, Frances McDonald, Frances Kosarek, Helen and Clem Kasparek, Rosalie Williams and Bud DuPlessis, Donna Havranek, and Jerry Elzner. Thanks to all of you, and to all the others who choose to make donations to other favored charities in Lera's honor. We were so happy to see Georgia Kubala at the meeting. She has been ill for some months and unable to attend, so it was doubly great to see her and be able to sing "Happy Birthday" to her as our only April birthday girl. Welcome back, Georgie! Jerry Elzner spoke of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas' spring meeting, which was well attended with 242 people present. He also mentioned the first annual Miss Texas Czech-Slovak contest, whose winner, Lauren Valek of Dallas, will go on to compete in the Miss USA Czech-Slovak contest. Jerry also reminded us that the deadline for putting ads into the Slet booklet is May 1. In hor--. glf. ay ln May, we dacidt tf a of our rt_tritiers and :3 and aur__.. day off

Betty Judea, Ella Simcik, Jill Sijansky, Dorothy McCoy, MaryAnn Benes, Caroline Farek, and Helen Kasparek all volunteered to bring a dessert which will round out the meal. Dorothy McCoy apologized for not getting in touch with the Taft Pickle Factory concerning a tour of their facility for a field trip. She will do so this month and let us know the particulars at next month's meeting. We recited our motto, gave out door prizes and then enjoyed a great luncheon of ham and sausage and all of the trimmings as well as some delicious desserts. Fraternally, Becky Elzner —SPJST-

Dear Vestnik Readers, I thought everyone would enjoy this:
What I Learned From Trees It is important to have roots. In today's complex world, it pays to branch out. Don't pine away over old flames If you really believe in something, don't be afraid to go out on a limb. Be flexible so you don't break when a harsh wind blows. Sometimes you have to shed your old bark in order to grow. It is okay to be a late bloomer Avoid people who would like to cut you down. It is more important to be honest than poplar Grow where you are planted. You cant hide your true colors as you approach the autumn of your life. Fraternally, Kimberly Gaas, 16 4/23/03

Lodge 48, Beyersville youth leaders invites youngsters to get involved Hello! My name is Denisse Wuensche, and I need you to help make the Lodge 48 Youth Club a roaring success. We will be electing officers at our May meeting, and you may just fit into our group. We will try to have activities while the adults are meeting then get together around 5 p.m. to have our meeting. This is an opportunity for you to meet with old friends and make some new ones. If you attended the last meeting, and you make this one, you should qualify for camp this year and that is always a lot of fun. There are also a lot of chances to earn points towards being the "top performer" of the youth club and this usually is rewarded with money. I am looking forward to working with you and with my great helpers. We have several moms, aunts, and grandmothers who have agreed to get me through this first year. We will talk about how you can win chances at a trip to New York City. You don't want to miss out. Bring a friend. We always enjoy having more folks come out. See ya' soon, Denisse Wuensche Youth Leader —SPJST-
There are approximately five miles of hiking trails in this area. Thank you, Pam Sedita Capps Youth Leader —SPJST-
88, Houston Youth Club member enjoys state camp Lodge
Dear Readers, State Camp was fun! This was the first time I went to camp. On Friday night, we ate hot dogs that we roasted
by the fire and played games and met new friends. Saturday was filled with fun. We went to the lake to fish and canoe and some climbed the tower. Crafts were the best! We made bunnies, picture frames, teddy bears, and wrote on eggs. We had a scavenger hunt and an Easter egg hunt. We raised and lowered the flag every day and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Camp was great! I can't wait until summer camp! Fraternally, Allison Wockenfuss, 6 Reporter 4/23/03

Lekce etrnacti Lesson No. 14 Rules of spelling and punctuation. The Czech alphabet possesses the ability of rendering the quantity of vowels by the use of the Barka, and the palatal sound of the three consonants, t', g. To further increase the number of sounds and letters, the hadek or caret is used for some hushing sounds. s—, c—, z—, r—f As indicated previously, the following are hard consonants: d, t, n, h, eh, k and r. If these hard consonants are followed by the pit Bit sound, the sound must be spelled with a y or y, thusly: chytrY kdyby (byl) *ten kytice iadnY rytif hybny The soft consonants are d, f, f, and also c and j. If these are followed by the ee (bee, see) sound, the sound must be spelled with an i or 1, thusly: divat 5iti ticho 6islo niditel fizek 2i v9 cizinec Jiskra Words with i or i in their root are in the vast, majority. The "neutral" consonants b, p, v, f, m, 1, s, and z, are followed by either i, i, or y, Y, according to their origin or derivation. When you add a prefix before words like titel the long ti is retained: bezaelnSi. USE OF CAPITAL LETTERS: There is a difference in the usage of capital letters in Czech and English. Ex.: Yesterday was Wednesday, July 14, 1963, Vera byla stfeda, 14. et'vence 1963. Consequently, days of the week and month are NOT capitalized. NOTE ALSO THAT A SIMPLE PERIOD IS USED AFTER THE DATE. Proper nouns, that is, names of persons, places, things, nations, etc. (but not religious bodies or organizations) titles of books, films, etc. take capitals. Ex.: Karel Dvofak, Wilsonovo nadra I, Dunaj, Anglican, eechy, Smetanova opera, "Prodana nev6sta", etc., and Na e fimsko-katolicka cirkev; Velika slovanska podporujici jednota.
g
Capitals are not used for emphasis or for news headlines in Czech. On the whole the use of capital letters is rather restricted in Czech. Here are other important points in spelling: Pronouns and possessive adjectives of the POLITE-FORMAL usage are _capitalized, as are those of the FAMILIAR-INFORMAL usage: Vy, Vim, Va g : Ty, Tvbj, Tobe. The latter are ALWAYS in caps; the polite form is capitalized only when referring to a group (plural), then the pronouns are
not capitalized. A common error made by many Czechs in this area is that when they use the formal Vy, Vas, Vam, they use a PLURAL verb, although they are addressing only one person. WRONG: Vy, (1 person) jste vtera jell do mtsta. RIGHT. Vy jste jel do mesta. DO NOT USE A PLURAL VERB UNLESS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO MORE THAN ONE PERSON. The pronoun ja is not capitalized; neither do we capitalize adjectives and adverbs indicating nationality. (This is done in English). Ex., Marn tesku lenu. (I have a Czech wife). Mluvime tesky. (We speak Czech). Punctuation marks are the same in Czech as in English: (See also Lesson 5). vykritnik(!) tetk a(.) uvozovaci arka(,) znarnenka(" ") stfednik(;) zavorky( ) dvojtetka(:) rozdelovaci pomitka(—) znamenko(-) Otiznik(?) One big difference in English and Czech punctuation has to do with the use of commas. Commas are used before and after a relative clause: Ztratil jsem knihu, kterou nti dal. —before and after a noun clause: Je dobfe, Ie tomu rozumig. —before and after an adjective clause: V echen cukr, v echna kdva. —before and after an adverbial clause: Jakmile me uvidei, el pry Finally, quotation marks are always preceded by a colon. Ex.: Otec fekl synovi: "Pokraduj a ut se!" (In Czech, the first quotation marks are on the line, not inverted, and ARE inverted at the end of the quotation. Our machines here do not print the double inverted quotation marks. The trend here in the US is to use the standard English quotation marks—" ".
