Here's to Your Health! May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, a celebration of the joy and health benefits of living an active life. President Reagan proclaimed the first National Physical Fitness and Sports Month in 1983. What does that mean to us? Well, for those of us who are able-bodied, may it serve as a gentle reminder for us to get moving and stay in shape. Talk it up and spread the word at your. May lodge and youth club meetings! Join Hands Day Scheduled for Saturday, June 21, the fourth Join Hands Day is just a few weeks away. America's Fraternal Benefit Societies have supported this day since its inception in 2000. Members and lodges have initiated and participated in projects every year; and with each succeeding year, participation increases. Join' Hands Day was conceived in 2000 as a volunteer day that would build relationships across generations to help break down age barriers. Adult groups invite youth organizations and youth groups invite adult organizations to become project partners for the day. As the different generations work together, they develop friendships and begin to build trust, confidence and respect for each other. Sometimes long-term relationships develop. Join Hands Day is sponsored'by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), the association of America's Fraternal Benefit Societies, the Points of Light Foundation and the Volunteer Center National Network.

15, Buckholts reports on lodge, member activities Lodge
Our April meeting was well attended with all officers present and also special guests. First, Our Vice President Mary Frances Chudej introduced District Two Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky from Lodge 47, Seaton who spoke on how to be an effective salees representative. She also extended a cordial invitation to help their lodge celebrate its 100th anniversary on June 1. Other special guests were Lanny and Sherry Dusek of Oregon who were visiting her parents, Douglas and Virginia Williams, and her grandmother, Jewel Burtis. Regretfully, I have to report members having health problems like Sidonia Svoboda who has a pacemaker put in. She is slowly recuperating at home but is hoping to be strong enough to attend our lodge meeting in May that being the month she celebrates her 87th birthday. Also, Clara Balusek was hospitalized overnight after emergency surgery. We hope to see her and Johnnie both in out May meeting. On March, Grace Labaj of Temple and dean of nurses at Mary-Hardin Baylor underwent major surgery and has started chemotherapy last week. We are proud of all our members, but most especially of her because we think of her as our very own, the former Gracie Stoebner, born and reared in Buckholts. Hilda Burtis shared news of her trip to Dallas on April 4 to attend the pre-convention banquet of the Texas Speech and Hearing Association where her two daughters, Mary Irene and Marguerite, were honored with special awards to standing ovation. They are both speech and hearing pathologists in private practice in Dallas. As I was congratulated from all sides on the success of my daughters, I could only say, that they are my daughters, and I expected no less. Since I received the SPJST Lifetime Achiever award and my daughters their Texas Speech and Hearing awards, the honors came full circle when Marguerite's husband,
Peter Vogel, was named one of 176 best lawyers in Dallas. It was in a poll conducted by D Magazine and circulated amongst the 17,000 attorneys in Dallas to vote for the 176 lawyers in Dallas and Peter Vogel made the list. This list will be featured in the May issue of D Magazine. It was no surprise to me that Peter is a great lawyer as I already knew what a great all-around person he is. Happy Anniversary On Saturday, April 12, Douglas and Virginia Williams celebrated their golden anniversary at the hall. Before the event, Bennie Vybiral, told me they would be having finger foods which didn't exactly grab me as I'm not that fond of such, but I thought what the heck, I'm not going there to eat, I'm going there to help Doug and Virginia celebrate and to visit with a multitude of friends. To our great delight, the food turned out to be sumptuous and most bountiful feast, the likes of which we'll never see again unless it's at their 60th anniversary. I may not hang around that long, but I'll spend whatever time I have in delightful anticipation. The food was catered solely by their children, Douglas Keith and Monte Williams and Sherry Dusek and, by their spouses, Beatrice and Diedra Williams and Sherry Dusek. I sort of got carried away and forgot to mention that our President Doug Williams announced that the most-needed repairs to the hall are awaiting the closure of our loan from the Supreme Lodge which is maybe dragging its feet a little bit. So after door prizes were awarded, the meeting was adjourned to partake of a delightful meal provided by Virginia Williams. I think we owe special thanks to her because what she does goes well above and beyond the call of duty of a treasurer. Fraternally yours, Hilda Kuzel Burtis Reporter —SPJST-

24, Cyclone reports on April meeting Lodge
Dear Members: Lodge 24, Cyclone met at Flag Hall on Monday, April 14 at 7 p.m. A meal preceded the meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek. The minutes were read and approved. Birthdays in April are Barbara Macek, Jacqueline Nauert, Terri Vanicek, Jordan Sebek, Mark Macek, David Macek, and Janet Ashcraft. Anniversaries are for Gene and Ann Hejl, 43rd, and David and Melanie Nauert, three years. We just know that each of the ladies got a really nice gift. J.R. Schiller, one of our two social members, is back at home from the rest home. We are pleased for him. David Nauert, our vice president and Fraternal Activities Coordinator, advised of the Easter egg hunt at Lions Park this Easter weekend. On May 17, the State Horseshoe Tournament will be at Lions Park in Temple. Entrance fee is $7. We had some gravel delivered for repairing the parking lot. The add-on for the cook shed has been completed—looks good. Now rain will not put out the fire when someone is cooking. Taking Care of Business The trash pick-up has zoomed up to $65 per month. All of the insurance is now with one company from Kansas. It includes the BYOB. Sad that we could not continue with RVOS and the other local insurance people as we tear into our own local economy and send our treasure elsewhere. Soon, we may be looking at only ourselves to support our lodge. Sebek Painting gave the lodge a discount of $300 on the painting job. The job is done really well, and the lodge receives many compliments. Carl Macek is doing a good job for the hall on the air conditioning units for a low price. Our expenses run about $50,000 per year. Our officers are doing really well. We all are thankful.
$6.50 per plate at the hall or to go. Barbara Macek needs severs and Joan Vanicek needs cakes. Wilbert Mikeska heads the cooks. We need all the nearby people to come as well as any from town who may want eat our delicious barbecue and enjoy the beauty of the springtime in the country. The ribbons of green made by the newly planted corn is a wonder to behold. Lodge 47, Seaton is having its 100th year celebration on the first Sunday in June—June 1, 2003. We should all be there. Next Meeting May 12 Our next meeting is Monday, May 12 at 7 p.m., and supper is at 6:30. This reporter is pleased to also report that he does not go to sleep any more in the meeting as he was found to have sleep apnea. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the writer thundered down Highway 53 at 80 miles per hour and woke up on Big Elm bridge on the shoulder. The testing was difficult for the techs as my skull was too thick for many of the sensors to work well. Bobby Hoelscher, Reporter —SPJST-

Lodge 88, Houston member, lodge activities Lodge 88, Houston member, Paul Beck, who is very active with the Salvation Army Women and Children's Center was awarded a medal as "Volunteer of the Year." This honor was given to him at a Volunteer Appreciation Dinner held at Lodge 88 on February 26, 2003. The lodge donated the use of the hall for this event. Paul's volunteer activities include going to the center one afternoon each week and reading to the children; also, helping to serve food on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Paul is a great volunteer at the lodge, too. At our special celebrations, he is always in the kitchen doing all he can to help. Alan Beck, a nephew of Paul Beck, is a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. He has taken a six-
month leave of absence from his employer to hike the full length of the Appalachian Trail which stretches from Georgia to Maine -- a distance of 2100 miles. He started his trek on April 1 which was his birthday as well as April Fool's Day. Recently, I had the opportunity to have a nice long visit with Naomi (Kostom) Spencer, a lady who I admire so much. She has worked for our lodge for many years and is so young at heart. She sets a good example for everyone in our fraternal organization. Our travelers, Jeanette and E.J. Bender, took a 12-day cruise in February. They made stops in Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman, Panama, Costa Rica, and Jamaica, When traveling through the Panama Canal, the ship had only a two-foot clearance on each side for passage. After passing through the Gatun Locks, they took a train ride to the Pacific Ocean, visited Panama City and saw the Bridge Over the Americas. They went to the Dole Banana Plantation in Costa Rica and were amazed that from planting, harvesting and packaging the bananas, the fruit are never touched by machinery. Everything is done by hand. In Jamaica, they saw a 400-year old sugar factory. For souvenirs, the

Letters Section (Continued from page 11.) After the death of her first husband, George Harris (brother of Annie Harris Stransky Sacky) Helen, her mother, and son moved to Corpus Christi where she had met Louis Sacky. Louis and his son had moved to Corpus Christi from San Antonio after the death of Tillie, beloved wife and mother. Both Helen and Louis had been Sokol and SPJST members. Helen attended SPJST Corpus Christi Circle of Women meetings faithfully until moving to a rest home a little over a year ago. Her son, Father George, as we called him, came to our meetings as her guest, and we thought of him as our priest. He became a monsignor not long before his death in February 2002. He was a fine man and wonderful son. Through her marriage to Louis, Helen gained a loving son and later a large extended family she loved, and all of whom loved her. At our SPJST Krouzek meetings, she was known as Aunt Helen since that is what her niece, Anna Marie Moss, called her. They were very close, having known each other over 70 years when Anna Marie lived in Dallas next door to Sokol on Carl Street. Our Czech community has lost another fine, thoughtful member. Alice read the names of Alice Barnes, Martha Boenisch, Joe Kozel, Mary Ann Kozel as being hostesses for April. Our March hostesses Irene Green, Angie Strittmatter, Pat McWilliams, and Pauline Walker did a super job, and all the tables were decorated with Easter items which were used as door prizes. Thank you, ladies! Rosie Steinman read a prayer for peace then led us in grace before our Easter luncheon which was enjoyed by all. Following, games were played with Lydia Alholm and Agnes Reznicek furnishing prizes for the last two games. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club members attend SPJST Easter Eggstravaganza Dear Readers, The New Tabor Youth club has been busy as usual. On Saturday, April 19, 2003, eleven members and their parents attended the Easter Eggstravaganza held in Temple. I wasn't allowed to hunt eggs but I did do a sweep of the playground after the kids got finished and found a few. We then planned to eat at the mall, but couldn't because of a bomb threat at the mall. So we ate at El Chico's instead. After lunch, we visited the Ronald McDonald house in Temple and took them the pull tabs we had collected. We had over 25 pounds of tabs. We also made donations to their food pantry. We toured the house and then took pictures with the Ronald McDonald statue in the back yard. We are continuing to collect the pull tabs. We are going to collect for a whole year and see how many we can get. Our next meeting is May 4, 2003
