May has been designated as Fraternal Insurance Counsellors Month by the National Fraternal Congress of America (NFCA), the national trade association for fraternal benefit societies. The SPJST joins in this observance and salutes its 111 sales representatives who have achieved the FTC (Fraternal Insurance Counsellor) designation. "The fraternal benefit industry is proud of our community service and fraternal programs, but one of the-most important benefits to our members are the financial services represented by our professional and ethical member recruiters and sales agents," says Michael F. McGovern, NFCA Board Chairman. "While every one of our sales personnel is valuable, May is set aside each year to recognize the industry's FICs. These talented and energetic Fraternal Insurance Counsellors have worked hard, studied and completed required coursework to achieve their well-deserved designation." FIC History
In 1949, the Fraternal Field Managers Association (FFMA), a special section within the NFCA, decided to develop its own educational program. The first course consisted of
three books — a fourth was added later — to provide a self-study training program focusing on the history of fraternalism, basic life insurance concepts, recruitment techniques, individual and family needs, estate planning and ethics. The first 134 FICs were conferred in 1950 and the National Association of Fraternal Insurance Counsellors (NAFIC) was established. Nationwide, there are approximately 7,000 accredited FICs, with 4,400 belonging to the NAFIC. The association consists of 36 state FIC chapters and one in canada. The FFMA later saw the need for education in advanced underwriting and developed a "Fellow" program consisting of additional training. Successful completion of this portion earns the designation FICF. Within SPJST, Supreme Lodge Vice President Gene McBride and Assistant to the Vice President Kathy Fritz possess the 1-1CF designation. If you are an • SPJST sales represenative and have not yet achieved FIC designation but would like to learn more, please contact SPJST State Training Coordinator Jim Wiest at the Home Office at (800) 727-7578 or via cell phone at (254) 541-5555. —SPJST-

Some Things Don't Change Out of the Archives One of my favorite sections of the SPJST Library is the aisle that includes the Vestnik archives. Occasionally, I like to pick a volume at random and just start reading. So often, it seems, the themes remain the same and only the names have changed. Fifty years ago, in the May 6, 1953 Vestnik, the late Albert Bristik, Secretary of Lodge 88, Houston wrote to the Vestnik to express his concerns that many of our members would do well to carry additional life insurance protection. "There are many members who carry only $1,000 life insurance protection. Just think what $1,000 means today in the event the breadwinner, or head of the household, should suddenly be taken away from this earth," he writes. "Some people think that life insurance is intended to take care of burial expenses upon death . .. The grocery bills, rent or home installments, clothing bills, utility bills, etc., come due regularly even after the head of the family has passed away; and, what about the children's education? "I have heard people say, that they can't afford to pay for any more insurance; that they are insurance poor. In my opinion everyone should carry at least enough life insurance to cover one year's normal earnings on his job, and, of course, more if at all possible." Well said! Brother Bristik, who was also a top-producing sales representative, continued, "Another thing to remember is that life insurance cannot be
"The times have changed; however, the need for fraternalism and fraternal life insurance remains as strong as ever."

bought like television sets, automobiles, various luxuries; etc. It can be obtained only by making application for it while a person is in good health, and the younger the person is, the less it costs. I know several persons who would be only too glad to take out $5,000 or more insurance, regardless of cost, but I cannot accept their applications because they cannot pass the physical examination. I wonder why it is that people who know they are sick are always willing to buy insurance? If they think they are worth more in dollars and cents while in ill condition, why doesn't a healthy person place a higher value upon himself; after all, we will all die sooner or later." There's more to his article, but this serves to make the point: Fraternal life insurance helps people set money aside regularly and persistently year after year. It guarantees the safe and successful accumulation of funds for future income and emergency needs. The times have changed; however, the need for fraternalism and fraternal life insurance remains as strong as ever. For more information on SPJST life insurance and annuity programs available to you, please contact your local lodge sales representative. You can also call the Insurance Department at (800) 727-7578 and they will direct a sales representative in your area to call on you.
The Vestnik - as it appeared on May 6, 1953 -- not a lot of pictures and mostly in Czech. Even as the newspaper and the world have changed, the need for fraternalism and fraternal life insurance remains constant.
She's walked a shining pathway Where e'er her feet have trod. She leaves a precious heritage Of love and faith in God. She's seta pure example In word and deed and thought, And priceless are the thankless tasks, Here tireless hands have wrought. She's smiled away our troubles And soothed our every care, So once again on Mother's Day Our hearts repeat this prayer: God bless our angel mother, And give Thy best to her Again, some of the best things in life don't change. Mom has always been and will always be a very special person. Remember yours on Mother's Day Sunday, May 11. -SPJST-

Afterwards, we had a great lunch of fried chicken, chips, juice and cupcakes. Thank you, Mama Bessie, for those delicious drumsticks. We then held our April meeting and did a craft.

There was an Easter egg hunt and a pillowcase race and this game where you hold a spoon in your mouth and an egg in the spoon. That was a hard game, but I didn't drop my egg. On Sunday, April 27, we went to Ennis Lodge 25 for the District Three Spring Meeting. We also had a youth meeting where new officers were elected and plans were discussed for YAD and camp. , Thank you President Eugene Dolezal for letting us use the lodge and especially for letting my daddy watch the NASCAR race at the bar counter.
