How Time Flies In preparing this week's Vestnik, it occurred to me that it's been 25 years since I graduated from high school. I remember the night very well and still recall asking myself, "Where will I be in 25 years?" I didn't have a clue. I knew that I wanted to major in journalism when I went to college but beyond that, everything was pretty much a blank slate. No girlfriend. No bills. No income. It was an exciting time! A quarter century later — gee whiz, that sounds like a long time — life is good and remains an exciting adventure. In fact, I still find myself wondering, "Where will I be in 25 years?" Wherever you happen to be on life's road, make the most of it. If you're reading this, you're probably a lodge member. Make the most of that membership. If you're able-bodied,

THE EDITOR'S DESK

get involved. It can be a lot more fun than sitting on the sidelines. If you're a lodge leader, get together with your fellow officers and trustees and determine how your lodge can best meet the needs of your members and the community in which you live. If you're already doing that, keep up the good work. Lodges that work hard at nurturing an environment of courteous service, goodwill and purpose will prosper because they are making a positive difference. The SPJST is at its best when we work to achieve the high ideals of benevolence, humanity and brotherhood. We grow — as individuals and as groups — to be like that which we idealize. What you are now and all you will become is the result of seed ideas sown in your mind. Expect the best and you very well may get it! —SPJST-

Youth Letters Section District Four Youth Counselor says farewell Dear Past and Present District Four Youth Club Members, In August 1985, my two oldest children, and I traveled to Rowena to join a brand new SPJST youth club in District Four. Never could I have dreamed that would be the beginning of some of the most enjoyable times of my life. After much pleading by Hubert Drgac to start a youth club in Lodge 160, five families met in January 1987 and organized a youth club. I was elected youth leader with Melanie Block as my assistant. I served in this capacity until 1989 when I was elected District Sandra Jansa Youth Counselor. I would like to say thank you to all

of the youth who have traveled through the SPJST Youth Program with me. I was able to watch you grow from a mischievous little six year old to a responsible teenager! These past 17 summers of attending camp have held such unforgettable experiences. We have attended six different camps together with each one holding special memories. I can remember those awful midnight hikes through tall grass at Camp Val Verde, the wild hay rides, and all the chocolate candy we "snitched" from Matthew and Paul Rollwitz at Camp Paluxy, the square dancing with Joel and the "war games" on the hill that Jason Havlak looked forward to at Camp Butman, sleeping no more than two hours at night (had to keep night patrol for anyone who just might want to "sneak out" of their cabin) at Camp Lone Star, the challenge course and fun movie theater at Peaceable Kingdom Retreat, and the wagon rides and snipe hunting at Wagon Wheel Ranch. Of course, there was always someone who loved to scare me with a snake! I can remember making numerous threats to "send you home" if you scared me one more time! There were so many other fun times such as the district trips to Six Flags, Schlitterbahn, and Aquarena Springs. What better way is there to spend a summer vacation than with 20 to 30 wonderful SPJST youth! Each District Youth Achievement Day (YAD), I was just amazed at your display of talents! The crafts were always so remarkable. I was so proud of each oflyou for your performances on the stage - whether it was in the royalty contest, group talent, or individual talent. It was so thrilling to see you grow in confidence each year! Having raised four of my own children in the organization, I knew it took many hours to prepare for these contests. In fact, the first summer that I didn't have one of my own children involved in YAD (the last had graduated from high school), my son said it just didn't seem "normal" that I wasn't screaming "Get your projects finished!" the night before YAD. How proud you made all of us from District Four with your performances at State YAD each year. Whether it was with your royalty speech, craft entry, talent entry, or scrapbook and poster entry, I always loved to brag that you were from my district. You always had a way of shining at this event each year. Thank you SPJST youth for allowing me to be a part of your life these past 18 years. I love you all. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club travels to Temple for the big Easter egg hunt Dear Readers On Saturday, April 19, our youth club went to Temple to the Easter egg hunt. This was my first year to go and I got lots of eggs. We all had a good time. My mom says it takes a lot of people to make these things possible, so I want to say thank you to everyone who worked hard so that I could have a good time. Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club learns about Ronald McDonald House Dear Readers On April . 19, a group of kids and parents went to Temple to the Easter egg hunt. After that, we went to the Ronald McDonald House in Temple. We took the Coke tabs we have been collecting and also donated some things for the people who stay there. I

didn't know that families stay here because their kids are real sick and in the hospital. We walked around a little, but not much. We didn't want to bother anybody who might be sleeping. I really learned a lot from this trip. Sincerely, Nathan Blum, 12 5/14/03 —SPJST-

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club participates in spring meeting

Dear Readers Our monthly youth club meeting was Sunday, May 4. Our youth director shared the many important dates coming up. We have district camp, LIT Camp, and District One Youth Achievement Day — Sunday, July 20 in Caldwell, Lodge 186.

We had our District One Spring meeting on Sunday, April 13, 2003 at Lodge 9, Snook. Our Youth Club presented a patriotic program at the meeting and we all wore red, white and blue for the program. Many of our youth club members attended. We also entered the Christmas Card Contest. I believe that in my age division — I'm 11 years old — there were around 14 entries. There were other age divisions also. I received third place in my age group and several of our members also placed in their age groups. We also got to make a craft. We then went to the park in Snook and got to jump in a big jumping gym. It was
