Reflecting on the meaning of Memorial Day in his 1987 essay, "Okinawa: The Bloodiest Battle of All," historian William Manchester spoke for more than his own generation of veterans, those who served in World War II, when he wrote:

"It is possible for me to loathe war - and with reason - yet still honor the brave men, many of them boys, really, who fought with me and died beside me. "I have been haunted by their loss these forty-two years, and I shall mourn them until my own death releases me. "It does not seem too much to ask that they be remembered on one day each year. After all, they sacrificed their futures so that you might have yours." Manchester's experience of war changed him and altered his life forever, leaving him with the haunting memory of men and women who died while defending the cause of freedom. We observe Memorial Day next Monday, May 26. The brave men and women we honor on that day have made the ultimate sacrifice

for liberty. Their names are carved in headstones and memorials across our nation and on distant shores. They live forever in our memory, forever in our hearts, and we are forever thankful to them. It isn't too much to ask that our veterans be remembered on one day each year. Some veterans fear that their service to our nation will be forgotten. I doubt that. No freedom-loving American could forget them. It has been said that the best way to honor the dead is to serve the living. Next Monday, on Memorial Day, may we recommit ourselves to this great principle of service. As the late President John F. Kennedy said of our nation's veterans: "Without belittling the courage with which men have died, we should remember the courage with which men have lived." So, for at least one day each year, may we honor and revere all of those who served - and especially those who gave their lives so that we all may live in freedom. -SPJST-

Lodge Letters Section Lodge 8, Weimar reports on April meeting Monday, April 28, 2003 was the regular meeting night for Lodge 8, Weimar SPJST. There were 23 members and guests in attendance. After opening with the Pledge of Allegiance and prayer, and a moment of silence for our departed members, we proceeded taking care of business. All officers were present, the minutes were read, and the treasurer's report was given which were all approved. On Friday April 4, eight members from our lodge put in a hard day of work. We attacked the brush at the SPJST Velehrad Cemetery with chain saws, clippers, and sturdy backs. We

SPJST records 714 applications written through April in Outreach 2003 program Through the end of April, the SPJST had received 714 applicatons for insurance and annuity certificates. The goal of the Outreach 2003 membership drive is to write at least 2,205 applications in 2003. In conjunction with the SPJST's Outreach 2003 program, local lodges have been assigned application quotas for the year. The lodge quota has been based largely on past performance and perceived potential.

The fourth column, "Youth Club Quota," applies to those lodges with youth clubs and reflects applications written for members between the ages of 0 and 17. "Youth Club" totals are applied toward the lodge's total quota. The sixth column, "Lodge Incentive Count," reflects the number of new certificates issued for the Lodge Recognition and Incentive Program through April 30, 2003. —SPJST-

Lodge Letters (Continued from page 3.) pick up the SPJST float and enter it in the Gedenke Parade. George Janik and Raymond Kocian each have reached the 50-year milestone in SPJST and were presented their 50-year pins by Leo. Congratulations to both of these fine active SPJST members. Our birthday lady for April was our newest transfer member, Annie Polnick. Before the meeting, we all enjoyed a delicious meal of barbecue brisket, potato salad, slaw, beans, and a lot of very good- desserts prepared by our members. George Janik did an outstanding job preparing the brisket, Henrietta made the potato salad, Rosie made the slaw, and Jo Ann prepared the beans. Following adjournment, we played several games of bingo. Our next regular meeting is Monday, May 26 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall, Weimar. Fraternally, Jo Ann Jares, Secretary —SPJST-

24, Cyclone reports on May meeting Lodge

Dear Members, Lodge 24, Cyclone met on Monday night. May 12 at Flag Hall. The meeting was called to order by President Brian Vanicek at 7:15 p.m. There were 22 members present — an astounding number in light of the fact that our Mother's Day dinner was on Sunday, May 11—the day before. The sick list included only Willie Mae Vanicek. We hope she is doing better. Birthdays were celebrated by Ann Hejl (81), Ginger Greger, Wilbert Mikeska, Louise Zavodny, and Bernice Sebek. New members include James Elkins, Waymond Richter, Buddie Ballard, Gwen Rebecca Ralston, Jamie Reid, Melissa Dunlavey, Melanie Dunlavey, Scott Mainard, Mary Lou Mainard, Glenda Faye Lewis, Luke Krumnow, Seth Ray Krumnow. and Christopher Cabla. A warm welcome to you. Vice President and Fraternal Activities Coordinator David Nauert presented information on the Texas Barbecue Lunch being sponsored by the SPJST Home Office. The lodge voted to donate $75 to the Children's Advocacy Center which will be the benefactor of proceeds raised from the lunch. In his report, Hall Manager Wilbert Mikeska reported that the hall is rented for the next 12 weeks. Included in the rentals is T.C. Taylor's CD release party on May 25 at 6 p.m. The Mother's Day dinner was a huge success as we had a large turnout. A count of 415 plates to go were sold, and 503 plates in the hall. So much energy was put out by the cooks as they started at 3 a.m. The cooks in the kitchen were working for

two days and started at 4:30 a.m. on Sunday. Billy Smetanka and Johnnie Chervenka, Jr. are the SPJST State "42" champs. We are justifiably proud of their accomplishment. The youth club had a meeting Sunday also. They had 14 members present along with a number parents. Youth Leader Joan Vanicek gave high marks to all of the young people and the parents who helped out with the Mother's Day dinner. She also reported that the youngsters had purchased a picket in the Whistle Stop playground. In his report, President Vanicek reported that he had received a letter from Lisa Dalzell, Miss Texas and that she considered her appearance at our. Texas Spring Gala as one of the favorite stops of her reign. Brian also reported that the completed ad valorem tax exemption forms had been submitted to the Bell County Tax Assessor/Collector's office. It is now his decision to grant the exemption. The next public event at Flag Hall is Czech Heritage Day on October 4. Ocker Brethren will have its Father's Day dinner on June 15 at the hall. Door prizes were won by Melanie Zavodny, Robert Macek, Gene Hejl, Bernice Sebek, and Wilbert Mikeska. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Lodge

One of our members, William Lamar Walden, passed away on April 29. He was a World War II Army Veteran and a lifetime member of Lodge 88. We extend our sympathy to his family. On the 28th of May, it will be one year since our dear sister, Tillie Helmcamp, passed away. We all miss her so much. Tillie was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. She will always be remembered for her honesty and her courage to speak up for what was right. As for the SPJST, she was a true fraternalist whose many years of service indicate how very proud she was of being a member of this great organization. Our sales representatives are working hard. In February, Helen Hegwood was the top producer in District Five for applications and insurance written. March top producer for applications was Marian Kadlecek and Robert Dvorak of Lodge 232, Mid-Houston, was the top producer for insurance written. We had a special treat with our refreshments after our April meeting— the week of Easter. Margie Anders brought deviled eggs for everyone— about 80 members. That is a lot of deviled eggs to make. Thank you, Margie. Josephine Bun was on the sick list the first part of April. We hope all is well with her now. Homecoming Celebration Our annual homecoming will be on Sunday, June 1. invites members to get involved and share their opinions We have well over 100 members in our lodge. Many are young men and women with small children. It is difficult for them to attend our meetings or become active on committees for this reason, and it is understandable. They will become more active when time permits. We have several members who carry most of the work load and do an exceptionally good job. These members are recognize and rewarded for their efforts. thanks to these dependable members we can boast of a successful club. Of course, you will always have some members who are not pleased with the way things are being run, but believe me, the officers, chairman, directors and working members in our lodge make every effort to do a good job which should please everyone. If you are unhappy about the way something is being done, talk to the chairman of that committee and let this chairman have the value of your opinion. We get a complete and very professionally-prepared monthly operating statement from Robert Sill, our comptroller, which brings everything up to date. Any governmental agency can audit his records at any time and find them to be exceptionally accurate. It is your obligation to call anything that is happening in our lodge that does not please you or that you are unhappy about to the president or the chairman of that committee. You should also praise the lodge members when in your observation or opinion, they have done a good job. Fraternally, Martha Phillips, Reporter —SPJST-

celebrates lodge mortgage burning with party, dance On April 25, 2003, the lodge had a party and dance with music provided by the Melodion Band featuring Miroslav Chodl from the Czech Republic. Over 100 were present at this celebration. For those of you who missed this celebration, you missed a

very good time. During the evening, one of the highlights—and you might say the purpose of having this social event— was the burning of the mortgage on our building. The officers and their helpers did a great job decorating and also preparing the food which was served all during the evening. The lodge was decorated with red, white and blue tablecloths. On the tables were placed red, white and blue balloons, and candles. Also, we cannot forget the beautiful and delicious cake which was decorated also in red, white and blue. We even had lighted trees with red, white and blue lights. During the evening, all officers and all past officers were recognized. Some of these officers had come in from out of town to be part of this important ceremony. However, there was one very important person who was not mentioned. He was never an officer, but he was most important in our securing this building. His name Ed Kral who helped secure the loan at the bank by signing the note guaranteeing payment of this loan. Lodge Gives to Mission Arlington During the evening, Ann Pustejovsky presented a check for $1,000 to Mission Arlington. This check was accepted by Tillie Burgin on behalf of Mission Arlington. Also, we had a prize drawing, and there were some nice prizes for the winners. We were proud to see that District Three Director Johnnie Krizan was able to make it, and we were very happy to see Jeanne Roznos come who came all the way from West to be at this celebration. Jeanne was president for several years. We miss her and her family. Fraternally, Martha Phillips, Reporter —SPJST-

Circle of Women May meeting report We began our meeting on May 1, 2003 with a moment of silence in honor and in memory of Helen

Sacky, a charter member of our Circle as well as of the Dallas Krouzek, who passed away last month. She was a devoted lifetime member of SPJST. We gave a charitable donation in her name to the Sokol gym fund. We will miss her. We had our luncheon catered in honor of Mother's Day, and all enjoyed the day off from cooking, with the exception of the Kitchen Angels who made desserts for us. They were Betty Jurica, Ella Simcik, Jill Sijansky, Dorothy McCoy, Mary Ann Benes, Caroline Farek, and Helen Kasparek. Thanks to all of them for making the goodies. Thanks again also to Dorothy McCoy, who decorated our tables with small vases of South Texas wildflowers and potpourri, making this a special Mother's Day celebration. And a final thanks to Jerry Sijansky, who was kind enough to pick up our barbecue and all the trimmings from Miller's. Rosalie Williams had a special announcement—she and Bud DuPlessis will be married next month, June 14. Congratulations and best of luck to the two of them. Dorothy McCoy told us about a possible tour of the Piciclin' Smith Factory in Taft. She spoke with David Smith, the owner, and he suggested that we wait until a little later in the month to go on our field trip when they are in production. After a brief discussion, it was decided that we would go there on Wednesday, May 28, meeting first at Sokol at 9 a.m. then carpooling to Taft, followed by lunch. That should be a fun outing for all of us who like pickles and all things pickled. Jerry Elzner asked that we try to come to the multi-cultural mass held at the Corpus Christi Cathedral on May 2. Sixteen different ethnic groups are represented including the Czechs. The costumes of the homeland are worn by those participating, songs are sung in different languages, and after the service, there is a gathering held in the basement of the Cathedral, at which the typical foods of the different countries are offered to all. Our meeting was very abbreviated due to this being our Mother's Day observance. So after we finished with the meeting, we passed out door prizes, recited our motto and enjoyed a hearty lunch and good fellowship. Fraternally, Becky Elzner —SPJST-
