S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor breaks ground for new assisted living facility S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony for its new assisted living facility on Saturday, May 24. Construction is underway on the facility — the only one of its kind in Taylor — which will consist of 24 single and double-occupancy rooms. The construction is expected to be completed in late October 2003. A Dream Come True "This is absolutely a dream come true," beamed S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home Chairman Dan Balusek of Buckholts, who participated in the groundbreaking ceremony. "It's a blessing that we are able to take on and build this project." The new facility will include numerous amenities including: • Private rooms with refrigerator and microwave. • Three nutritious meals per day. • Regularly scheduled transportation for appointments and group outings. • Scheduled housekeeping and laundry service. • All utilities except cable television and telephone.
• Individually climate controlled heating and air conditioning units in each room. • Library, game room and lobby with fireplace.

Mr. Richards, who has been with the rest home since 1990, defines the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home in Taylor as a "village within itself," a close community where its 74 guests can find continuity, comfort and meaningful expression. In addition to receiving first-rate care and accommodations, residents participate in a variety of social and exercise activities, including horseshoes and other games, movies and regularly scheduled performances by area musicians and choirs. "One of the things that allows us to maintain a very good program is that we have consistency in staffing," Mr. Richards says. Take a Close Look A fatal injury occurs every six minutes and a disabling injury occurs every two seconds according to the National Safety Council. Every year, unintentional injuries kill more Americans between the ages of one and 44 than any other cause including cancer, heart disease and stroke. In an effort to promote public awareness and ultimately decrease the number of injuries and deaths, the National Safety Council has designated June as National Safety Month. In fact, they've devoted an entire website devoted to the topic: http://www. nsc.org/nsm/index.cfm. Preparedness is not just for disasters, terrorism or weather emergencies. It also applies to life insurance. When was the last time you took a look at your SPJST insurance certificate? Even the most well-planned insurance program becomes outdated. For that reason, it's a good idea to occasionally review your certificate and see if it still fits your needs. Sometimes, a marriage, death, birth or divorce may affect the original beneficiary and settlement arrangements as outlined by the certificate. It makes sense to check and see if the arrangements you made when your certificate was issued are still okay, or will the insurance proceeds be going to the wrong people - or paid out in a way that makes little sense. Young people, especially, are encouraged to examine their certificate coverage. They may find that they can purchase more protection for their money today than if they wait to buy it in later years. Older members, too, will want to talk with their local sales representatives about the life insurance and annuity products available to them. For more information or to review your current coverage, please contact your local lodge sales representative or contact the Insurance Department
at (800) 727-7578 and they will put you in touch with a sales representative in your area. Helping Others Win "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle." - Author Unknown
In my E-mail last week, I received a thoughtful letter from Sister Marian Kadlecek of Lodge 88, Houston along with a story that helps to illustrate the importance of winning in life - not "winning at all costs," but rather, doing what it takes to help others win. I want to share that story with you: A few years ago, at the Seattle Special Olympics, nine contestants, all physically or mentally challenged, assembled at the starting line for the 100-yard dash. At the gun, they all started out - not exactly in a dash - but with a relish to run the race to the finish and win. All, thatis, except one little boy who stumbled on the asphalt, tumbled over a couple of times, and began to cry. The other eight heard the boy cry. They slowed down and looked back. Then they all turned around and went back . every one of them. One girl with Down's Syndrome bent down and kissed him and said, "This will make it better." Then all nine linked arms and walked together to the finish line. Everyone in the stadium stood, and the cheering went on for several minutes. People who were there are still telling the story. Why? Because deep down we know this one thing: What matters in this life is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life is helping others win - even if it sometimes means slowing down and changing our course. If you pass this on, we may be able to change our hearts as well as someone else's.

more years experience with the center. Among those are Gene Zachary with 22 years, Victoria Finn with 28 years, Janice Robinson with 31 years and Mary Gola with 32 years. Assistant Administrator Diane Volek has 24 years experience to her credit. "In the years I've been here, I've had the chance to know some very interesting and colorful people," says Ms. Volek. "Being able to help the residents cope with their challenges makes it a very rewarding job."
How It All Started "The whole idea is to run the home for the comfort of the individual guest," says Mr. Balusek "We want each guest to feel that this is his or her home." The idea to build the S.P.J.S.T. rest homes — first in Taylor and later in Needville — was initiated at the SPJST's 1956 convention in Temple. "SPJST members saw a real need to build a home — in purpose and in spirit — for some of its aging members," Mr. Balusek says. "So, they authorized the creation and organization of a selfgoverning and independent corporation

To this day, the management of the rest homes rest in the hands of seven directors — one from each district. The new assisted living facility will be constructed on the east side of the existing nursing home and is designed to accommodate for future expansion. According to Mr. Balusek, there's already a waiting list of people to check in. At last count there were 25 names on the list. In accordance with the rest home's by-laws, residents for the new assisting living facility will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. As stated in the home's by-laws, "Every application made by members of the Order for admittance to the Home shall be taken into consideration, but it shall in no case he made the basis of any preference on count of membership in SPJST."

In closing, I wish you carefree days of coolness and relaxation this sum mer. Hopefully, we will all (soon) be able to say thank you for a downpour of rain that most areas desperately need. Here it is, about half of the year gone, summer solstice is on the 21st (about 14 hours of daylight here and 21 hours of daylight at the North Pole), and it is only five more months before local lodge elections are to be held. This year, delegates to the 2004 convention will be elected also, for it is only a year away. Yet, it seems as though New Year's Day was yesterday. Where does the time go? Lodge 88, Houston reports on lodge, member activities Charles and Lea Hodek spent a week in Charlotte, North Carolina, attending the 73rd reunion of the Bomber Wing Association. Houston's own Peter Roussel, whose brother was killed landing a B-29 off Saipan in World War II, was the guest speaker. Mr. Roussel served in the White House under Presidents Reagan and Ford. His many accomplishments include being an author and television commentator. The Hodeks stayed in Biloxi and Lake Charles on their
return trip. The youth of Lodge 88 had a successful garage sale on the May 3. They were helped by the district youth and all are planning another sale on Saturday, June 7 at Lodge 172, Pasadena. The district youth walked in the Strawberry Festival Parade in Pasadena with the District King and Queen riding in a red Corvette convertible. They were followed by a large United States flag carried by eight adults and a pickup truck filled with youth waving to the crowd. It was very impressive. Youth Leader and District Five Youth Counselor Barbara LinneyGonzales encourages sales reps signing up new members to remind them of our youth club which meets the third Wednesday at 7 p.m. and they would love to have them join us. Get well wishes to our members on the sick list. Della Miksch fell and Dorothy Novak had knee surgery. Johnny Broz has had back surgery. He is doing well and is at home. Ed and Ellen Miculka are doing okay now, but have been ill at times. Both of them have worked at the lodge for years. Ellen was one of our efficient financial secretaries for many years. I have to reminisce a bit: She and Harley worked real well together. There were many Monday mornings, bright and early, when they would be handling pre-sale reservations for some big band dance. The line of people waiting would often be all the way out of the front door. Everyone wanted their special table. There are many dancers who still love the "big bands" as well as the polka bands. Alvin "A.J." Lenart, a lifetime member of the SPJST, passed away on May 19. He loved to dance, sing and listen to Czech music. Our deepest sympathy to his family.

Czech National Anthem: Stirring Tribute to a Beautiful Land by Kathy Davis The national anthem of the Czech Republic is "Kde Domov Muj?"— "Where is My Home?", a stirring song whose lyrics suggest a deep love and yearning for one's own native land. It was composed in 1834 by Frantisek Skroup for a play about a village fiddler written by Josef Tyl and entitled, "Fidovacka." Frantisek Stroup, Czech composer and author of the first. Czech opera, was born the son of a country teacher and musician. He was one of the main Czech Revivalist composers. Imagine, if you will, a quiet Prague street in the first half of the 19th Century. A man is furiously composing, writing a tune on music sheets. The writing is messy and the sheets show signs of energetic crossing-out of notes and lyrics. The title of the tune is simply, "Song Number 19". Now imagine, some weeks later, the song is first sung in a Prague theater. The theater falls into a dead silence, everyone holding their breath. At the end of the song, the silence continues to be suddenly broken by the eruption of what seems to be an endless show of joy and excitement. This is the magical power of this song, a magic that best conveys the
soul of the Czech people. The song remained popular with the Czech people throughout the remainder of the 19th Century and into the 20th Century. The Czechs took it with them as they spread to the new world. With the establishment of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1919, it was the clear choice to be the anthem for this new nation. "Kde Domov Muj Kde domov muj? Kde domov muj? Voda huci po lucinach Bory sumi po skalinach, Ve sade skvi se fora kvet, zemsky raj to na poheld, A to je to krasna zeme, Zeme ceska domov muj, Zeme ceska domov muj. "Where Is My Home?" Where is my home? Where is my home? The water hums over the meadows, The pines whisper over the mountains, The flower blooms in the orchard in the spring. It's a heaven on earth to look at it. All this is the beautiful country, The Czech country. (Kathy Davis is an SPJST Library, Archives and Museum volunteer.) —SPJST-

There were eight adults and three junior members present for this meeting which was great. Everyone had a great time. We want to wish B. J. Russell a speedy recovery. It was reported that he had broken his foot. The members' thoughts and good wishes are with you, B. J.! This is being writen on Memorial Day weekend. I hope that everyone had a happy and safe weekend and remembered all of our service men and women who are in the service and those who are overseas in harm's way. Pray for their safe return home. Without these brave service members, we would not be enjoying the freedom and happiness that we have in this country. Now that, so many of the schools are out, we will have a lot of school children wondering what to do now. That is where some of the adults need to step in and keep them busy and show them that there are lots of ways to entertain themselves and maybe make other people happy at the same time. There was a motion to cancel the June meeting because the third Sunday in June is Father's Day and everyone wanted to be at home on Father's Day. So, all of you Lodge 204 members, mark your calender and have a happy Father's Day. The next regular meeting will be July 20, which is the third Sunday of the month. Remember to keep smiling and the whole world will smile back at you. Fraternally, Norman Kneschk —SPJST-

News of Members Alice Roberts said that this year she was able to enjoy a double celebration on Mother's Day. Her oldest child was born on Mother's Day, and now 56 years later, the birthday again fell on Mother's Day. She said she had a great day. Libbie Elsik reported her sister inlaw, Lillian Villeck, lost her father inlaw in Temple recently. He was 103. This gentleman must have been quite a person as he drove until the age of 100 and lived by himself until about three months prior to his death. Our sympathy goes out to you, Lillian. Lil Kosarek's granddaughter, Jessica Kosarek, will graduate Magna Cum Laude from Mansfield High School in June. Jessica is my and Georgie Morales' grandniece. Congratulations, Jessica. We love you and are so proud of you! Jessica was the first girl born in our family following the birth of sister, Georgie Rose, which was 50 years later. During these 50 years, our family had 14 boys to be born then we got Jessica. Since then, we've had four more boys and three girls. I've attended all these high school graduations, and still have seven more to go. Jessica, if you miss reading this in the Vestnik, perhaps your Uncle Robert Tomanek will bring you his copy. Liddie Pavelka drove herself from Dallas this month to attend the meeting. Usually, she comes with Sidney Bridewell, but Sidney couldn't come this month. She even had to stop and ask for directions. Glad you made it, but sorry you missed lunch. Next time, you will have to eat twice as much to make up. We enjoyed seeing your 1924 photo taken at Sokol in Guy, Texas with you up on the high bar doing a salute. A frequent visitor to the Sewing Circle, Jerry Koubek, celebrated his 95th birthday on April 27. He was honored by a party in the dining room at Sterling House where he resides by Rose Mynarcik, Joe Vrana, and Mary Ann Kubin, his niece. It was a complete surprise to him, but he did enjoy
visiting with all his many friends and relatives in attendance. He was especially pleased to have his nephew, Jerry Stransky from Dallas attending. Jerry Milan and Jeanie Mason of Fort Worth even paid him a surprise visit following the SPJST Meeting. Congratulations, Jerry on attaining 95 and may you have many more birthdays to come. Thanks, Alice, for a Job Well Done It was with great sadness that the Krouzek accepted the resignation of Alice Roberts as reporter after 15 years of faithful reporting. Her reports and dog stories will be missed by all her Alice Roberts readers. I agreed to write the report this month and hopefully, a new reporter will be elected at the next meeting. Whoever accepts this position will have a hard act to follow as Alice did such a wonderful job. Thanks! The next meeting will be on June 12. See you then. Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-
Bronze Star available to WWII Army CIB and CMB holders It has been the U.S. Army's policy since 1947 to award the Bronze Star Medal (BSM) to only World War II soldiers who were awarded either the Combat Infantryman Badge or the Combat Medical Badge, but who had not received the award of the BSM. The rationale for this "dual" award program evolved from the fact that the BSM was first authorized in 1944. Therefore, many World War II soldiers who served prior to this date were denied the opportunity to have been recommended for such an award. Hence the 1947 "special policy" was
an attempt to retroactively recognize the efforts of at least these two categories of combatants; the front line infantryman and the front line medic. The National Archives and Records Administration is responsible for verifying and replacing awards and decorations. Standard Form 180, Request Pertaining to Military Records, should be used when requesting awards and can be downloaded at <http://usmilitary.about.com/library/b1sf180.htm >. Please fill out this form in its entirety and mail it to the appropriate address listed on the attached fact sheet, Requesting Military Awards and Medals. Normally, the SF 180 can be found at many VFW Posts or through the Post Service Officer. Be sure to indicate that you are requesting the BSM in accordance with the 1947 policy. If you have any questions concerning this issue, please contact Roy Grona at Department Headquarters, (512) 834-8535. Submitted by, Jerry Elzner Lodge 79, Corpus Christi —SPJST-

Youth Letters Section Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club members enjoy big egg hunt Dear Readers, Just recently, the Lodge 17 Youth Club attended the big Easter egg hunt in Temple. The young members had a great time at the hunt. Although I was too old to hunt, I made a quick sweep of the area after the hunt and found 12 eggs that the kids had missed. I gave them to a younger member who didn't find too many.
Let's hear what your members and youth clubs are doing to make a positive difference in your community. Send your news and photos to: Vest*, d o SPJST P.O. Box 100, Temple, Texas 76503 FAX: (254) 774-7447 E-mail: vanicek@spjst.com Got a question? Call (800) 727-7578
After the hunt, we decided to go to the mall to eat, but weren't able to because of a bomb threat at the mall. Instead we ate at El Chico. We then visited the Ronald McDonald House and took donations of food and other items. We also turned in the 30 pounds of Coke pull tabs we had collected. The day was fun. I'm looking forward to Leaders-in-Training retreat, camp and Youth Achievement Days. Summer starts tomorrow — May 29. Fraternally, Kyle Skrabanek, 14 —SPJST-

Happy Birthday, SPJST Youth Program!
Flag Day Each year on June 14, we celebrate the birthday of the Stars and Stripes, which came into being on June 14, 1777. At that time, the Second Continental Congress authorized a new flag to symbolize the new Nation, the United States of America. The Stars and Stripes first flew in a Flag Day celebration in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1861, during the first summer of the Civil War. The first national observance of Flag Day occurred June 14, 1877, the centennial of the original flag resolution. By the mid 1890s, the observance of Flag Day on June 14 was a popular event. Mayors and governors began to issue proclamations in their jurisdictions to celebrate this event. In the years to follow, public sentiment for a national Flag Day observance greatly intensified. Numerous patriotic societies and veterans groups became identified with the Flag Day movement. Since their main objective was to stimulate patriotism among the young, schools were the first to become involved in flag activities. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued- a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day on June 14. It was not until 1949 that Congress made this day a permanent observance by resolving "That the 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as Flag Day . . ." The measure was signed into law by President Harry Truman.

The nominative plural of masculine animate nouns has, for both hard and soft stems, the ending i, which softens the hard consonants before it. vojak—vojaci had—hadi Cech—Cegi eert—eerti doktor—doktofi pan—pani There are 2 other endings for animate masculine nouns in the nom. pl . — ove — personal names, such as Vaclavove, which means several people with the name Vacla y . Other examples: Cech—either Ital—Italove Cegi or Srb—Srbove (one syllable names) Cechove pan-panove Polak—Polaci syn—synove elen—elenove and Mad'ar— Mad'ati biskup—biskupove filosof—filosofove There is much fluctuation in the usage of the plural i and ove. Perhaps one rule of thumb to follow is to use the ove form when speaking and writing formally. All nouns ending in —tel, denoting office, position, or occupation, are made plural by the simple addition of é. Examples: ueitel—ueitele pohan—pohani stavitel—stavitele andel—andele obean = obeand host—hoste kraj an—krajane 2id-2ide Ameriean— soused—sousede Americana elovek—lide Slovan—Slovane man2e1— (exception: manZ'elove German, Germani (Nouns ending in—ista): houslista—housliste gachista—gathiste pianista—pianiste, pfitel—pritele There are a number of nouns that usually go in pairs, such as nOky, brfle, etc., somewhat like our words, sheep, deer, etc. There is no singular form for these words.
