Your Referrals Are Appreciated You Can Do It! On page four of this week's Vestnik, you'll find the most recent listing of members who have made referrals for new members in the SPJST. To all of these adults and young people, "Thank you!" Your referred leads are a wonderful asset for our volunteer sales force. When I use the term "referred leads," I'm talking about the people that you tell about the SPJST and then refer for membership. By providing referred leads to your local sales representative or to the Home Office, you are helping to ensure the continued growth of your lodge and of the SPJST. Growth, whether it is reflected by an increase in membership or by an increase in assets, are two important measures of health in any organization or business. What's more, when you make referrals that result in written applications, you also become eligible to win cash prizes and trips! The more people you refer, the more chances you have to win! For details on the member referral incentive, please see page four. If you've never made a new member referral, now is as good a time as any to get started. Consider all of your friends and family members who could benefit from SPJST membership ! To help get you started, here are a few tips for recruiting new members:

Let them know that the SPJST is a fraternal organization that seeks to improve the quality of life for its members and in the communities in where SPJST members, live, work and play. Introduce them to the wide range of products and services SPJST offers including the youth program and scholarship program by referring them to the SPJST website at www.spjst.com. Take them to a lodge meeting or lodge event. All the better if your lodge offers an active fraternal program or youth club. Give them a copy of the Vestnik!

"If you've never made a new member re erral, now is as good a time as any to get started."

Where to find new members • In your own home! Unless you're already a 100 Percent SPJST Family, home is the first place you'll want to start. And, yes, referrals "count" even if they are for family members. • In your circle of friends at work, church or in other clubs to which you belong. Referral opportunities abound: Young fathers. Proud new grandfathers and grandmothers. Friends whose children have just graduated from college. Neighbors who have recently been promoted. A friend who has just purchased a new home. What to tell potential members • Talk about how membership in the SPJST has helped you or a family member. As that relates to our insurance, annuity and mortgage lending programs, you'll be helping someone you know establish a higher degree of economic security — the kind of security that can keep lifestyles intact, children in school and lead to independence and comfort in retirement.

Let the SPJST Home Office help you to recruit: Adults may call the SPJST Home Office at (800) 727-7578 for materials to distribute to potential members and for referral cards. Young people are invited to call the State Youth Director for referral cards and information on youth referral incentives. There are no limits to the number of family or friends you can refer. Having said that, I encourage all current members to strengthen the SPJST by recruiting at least one new member between now and the end of the year. Just look around you and find someone who could be a member but isn't and help get that person signed up. If everyone did that, we would experience a dramatic membership growth in just a short period of time. "4'

District One Youth Counselor readies for camp; recalls last year Dear Readers, Wow! I can't believe that almost a year has gone by since District One Youth attended camp and that another camping season is just around the corner. While getting scrapbook material together, I realized that I had not reported to the Vestnik about our awesome camp in 2002. What a great time to reminisce about our last year camp as we get geared up for another great

District One SPJST camp. Youth campers from all five SPJST active youth clubs attended our 2002 camp held from July 6 to July 9 at Camp Val Verde. This was a first time experience for members of Lodge 186 and were they in for a few surprises. Initiation was one of the biggest surprises for all the new campers. The initiation ceremony involved eating a doughnut while being dangled in front of them from a string without using their hands. The trick was that the doughnut had been drenched in chocolate syrup. Boy, did they make a mess! First time chaperones were also initiated. Bruce Jones got a really messy face as his daughter, LIT Lacy Jones,

enjoyed tempting her dad with this drippy chocolate doughnut. We were entertained by a pair of clowns who also helped with our penny carnival one night. The LITs did an awesome job putting together all the games and making snow cones for those in attendance. We also had karaoke one night and all that decided to sing did a great job. We had a surprise on Sunday afternoon as District One Director Donnie Victorick and his son, Ashley, showed up at camp with cookies and sodas for all. Thanks to Mr. Victorick for supporting the youth of District One. Some interesting things also happened in the new director's cabin.

Karen Gaas drank Pine-Sol and somehow a broom or mop started fire in front of the cabin. Raiding cabins still seemed to be the talk of the day and for some reason, the junior boy's cabins were cleaner than the girls. Camp was one of the biggest ever, and thanks goes to all that helped make camp so successful. I'm hoping that this year's camp will be even bigger and better than last year and hope that it provides me with lasting memories. See you at District One SPJST cam from July 23 to 26, 2003. Better late than never.

Ueme se eesky Let Us Study Czech! Lekee osmnieti—Lesson 18 Correcting some often made errors. In this lesson, we will deal with some errors that are frequently made by Czechs in Texas. KDE—KAM These 2 words are probably misused more than any other. We frequently hear, "Kde jedeg?" This is wrong. To indicate the physical action of going somewhere, the word KAM is used: Kam jdeg ; Kam jeclig? The word kde indicates a stationary situation, and cannot be used to indicate physical action. Ex.: Kde to je? Kde bydlite? Kde je nadraii? etc. And using KAM, we say the following: Kam pojedete veer? Kam pkidete po divadle? Kam jste gli po zabave, etc. All you need to remember is whether you are indicating action or not. S —1SEM We call words like these homonyms; they sound the same but have entirely different meanings. In English, some homonyms are: there, their, they're, bear, bare; and close, clothes. SEM means "here", or "to here", with ACTION, Ex.: Were pfijeli sem. Pojd' sem! Dojeli sem gfastne. All of these involved action in coming or getting here. JSEM means simply I am, or used with certain verbs, denotes tense, or time something happened. Ex., Jsem uI stargi elovek. Jsem byl (byla) na vflete v horach. Jsem se reel dobfe. In speaking the above two words of sem and jsem, there is practically no recognizable difference: however, in writing it makes all the difference in the world. One means one thing, and the other means something else. SPRAVA—ZPRAVA Here are 2 tricky words, both written and pronounced exactly the same, but again have 2 entirely different mean-
