Where Were You? SPJST State King Jake Holland of Lodge 25, Ennis performs Alan Jackson's "Where Were You?" during the SPJST Home Office Flag Day observance on June 13. The song recollects the pain, compassion and faith displayed by Americans on September 11, 2001 — the day the twin towers of the World Trade Center were toppled by terrorist actions. Activities included the presentation of colors by the National Guard, a Flag Day proclamation by Temple Mayor Bill Jones, III, patriotic songs and the winning youth Flag Day essay written by Kim Gaas of Lodge 9, Snook and read by SPJST State Queen Marcheie Olds of Lodge 84, Dallas. Bell County Precinct Three Commissioner Leroy Schiller led the assembly in the singing of the National Anthem. Kolaches and coffee followed in the SPJST Home Office lobby.

sew the first American flag. With her experience and skill she finished the flag in late May or early June 1776. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress, seeking to promote national pride and unity, adopted the national flag. "Resolved: that the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be 13 stars, white in a field of blue, representing a new constellation." These stars represented Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. The date of June 14, 1777, even to this day, is observed as Flag Day throughout America. (Continued on page 3.)

Independence Day This Friday, July 4, SPJST members join with men, women and children all over the United States to celebrate Independence Day. The day, which marked the signing of the Declaration of Independence, set the course for a new kind of America - a nation based on the notion that real freedom, if properly protected, would enable its people to achieve their highest good. Growing up, I'll admit, I was always much more interested in Texas history than in the history of our founding fathers. It seemed a more relative starting point. After all, my grandparents . and great-grandparents immigrated to Texas. They didn't come over on the Mayflower and they didn't have anything to do with the American Revolution ... Thank goodness, however, for the ability to live and to learn! The older I get, the better I understand how what happened 227 years ago in Philadelphia has had a profound effect on my life and upon the lives of all Americans. Many of us are here today because our ancestors believed in the promise of America as a better way of life. A promise that was made and defended by people like Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. If you get the chance, read up on these people - our revolutionary forefathers - and you'll find they were an incredibly colorful and dedicated group of individuals! Their generation believed in the idea that this place the United States of America - was different and as such, so were they. They - and their fathers - had crossed the Atlantic to escape a world of kings, queens and hypocrisies. Their America was a country where things would be different - where government would be a moral act - not a birthright and not a license to oppress. Their ideals permeated the entire society. Their ideal - that all men are created equal - has withstood the test of time. For more than 200 years, it has evolved and attracted legions of world citizens seeking a better way of life. Like a giant patchwork quilt, our American heritage is a treasure for all of us to cherish, to share and to maintain for generations to come.
Slays, their purpose was to bring them the knowledge and acceptance of Christianity. Cyril was born in 827 and Methodius was born in about 825. All of the Slavic countries the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Poland, Ukraine and Russia -- received the Christian faith, and their written language directly or indirectly from Cyril and Methodius. John (Jan) Hus, as many know, provided the spiritual inspiration for the founding of the Brethren Church. Born to poor parents in a small Bohemian town, Jan Hus was one of the most important religious thinkers of his day. His reformist preaching earned him a large following who were known as Hussites. This was noticed by the Roman Papacy and Hus was excommunicated in 1411. In 1412, Wenceslas IV, brother of Emperor Sigismund of Germany, asked Hus to leave Prague which he did; however, he continued preaching in open fields and his following continued to grow. In 1414, Sigismund called for Hus to defend his teaching at the Council of Constance in southern Germany. In short order, Hus was put in prison where he was later declared a heretic and burned at the stake on July 6, 1415. To this day, on July 6, Hus is remembered in the Czech Republic for his willingness to live, fight and even die for the principles which he proclaimed. -SPJST-

The colors of the flag may be explained: The red is for valor, zeal and fervency; the white for hope, purity, cleanliness of life, and rectitude of conduct; the blue, the color of heaven, for reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice, and truth. The star, an ancient symbol of India, Persia and Egypt, symbolized dominion. The symbolism of the Flag was interpreted by Washington: "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes go down to posterity representing Liberty." From the year 1795 to the years of 1959 and 1960 when Alaska and Hawaii were given a star on our Flag, has our Flag flown proudly for all to see. The United States Flag is unique in the deep and noble significance of its message to the entire world, a message of national independence, of individual liberty, of idealism, and patriotism. It symbolizes national independence and popular sovereignty. It is not the Flag of a royal family or house, but of 205 million free people joined together as one Nation, united not only by a community of interest,
The symbolism of the Flag was interpreted by Washington: "We take the stars from Heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes qo down to posterity representing Liberty." but by vital unity of sentiment and purpose. It shows for all mankind the spirit of Liberty and the glorious ideal of human Freedom. It is a beacon of enduring hope. We must always remember the flag first rose over 13 states in 1777 with a population of some three million people. Today, year 2003, it flies over 50 states, extending across the continent, and 205 million people owe it allegiance. It has been brought to this position by love and sacrifice. It is the sign made visible of the strong spirit and has brought liberty and prosperity to the people of America. Let us always give honor and loyalty to the American Flag. —SPJST-

For our Homecoming celebration on June 1, a bunch of industrious ladies got together and baked 40 dozen kolaches. They were very good and every single one was sold. I am sending a picture of these good members. Mary Laznovsky attended the 34th Goska family reunion on June 1 at Needville Lodge 81. The large crowd enjoyed the Hawaiian theme which was very special this year. Everyone got leis to put them in the right mood. Tropical fruit and decorations fit the occasion. A delicious catered dinner with lots of good desserts was served. Everyone enjoyed visiting and reminiscing about old times. Mary has two sisters and three brothers living. At our July monthly meeting, we will have an old fashioned Fourth of July with hot dogs and watermelon for refreshments. My thanks to Marie Stayton for information on our June meeting which I missed. We all miss our members who can't come to our meetings. To name a few—Leland Hensley, Ed Miculka, Ann Urbanovsky, Lillie Spies, Estelle Kelly, and Laura Warnasch. Wedding anniversaries in this group were Bron and Teri Praslicka - 18 years; and Keith and Kim Bland - 19 years. Birthdays celebrated were Teri, Brianne and Bryton Praslicka, and Keith Bland. Also enjoying the festivities was Theretta's mother, Leona Stapp, who will be celebrating a very special 95th birthday on July 3, 2003. We were especially pleased to see Frank and Theretta getting their children and grandchildren involved in dancing polkas and waltzes. The Polka Stars played with a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and all enjoyed their music until the end. We wish Clem Kubacak a speedy recovery. We hope he will be up and playing with the band the next time we book them. Lodge 187, Round Rock remembers moms at May meeting, fathers in June For the May meeting of Lodge 187, Round Rock, members brought mementos or told fond remembrances of their mothers. Carnations corsages were given to each mother. Jennave Fuchs presented a history of Mother's Day and provided a "Mothering Cake". In the 1600's, servants were given one Sunday to visit their mothers and to take a cake or small trinket to their mothers. In June, the meeting was devoted to honoring our fathers. Members brought or told memories of their fathers. The history was also read. A most interesting fact is that more collect calls are made that day than any other day of the year. Secretary Bette Hurta read the minutes from the May meeting and passed. Vice President Evelyn Zajicek called for kitchen workers. They are Ora Nell Hassebrock and Edna Wehring. She also asked for cake.bakers, and they are Mary Kosut, Margie Anders, Allyne Adams, Dixie Riskin, Ora Nell Hassebrock, and Edna Wehring. We are still having finger food in July. Get well cards were sent to Mary Quider, Josephine Buri, Estelle Kelly, Margaret Spahr, and Betty Holst. Ticket Chairman Bessie Dewer thanked everyone for the nice gifts on the table and the people who brought money and pinned it on the table cloth.
We began June's meeting with a moment of silence in memory of Victor Novosad, husband of member Pauline Novosad, who pass,ed away last month. We decided to send a charitable donation in his name to Driscoll Children's Hospital, as the family had requested. Dolores Pollok also read a thank you from the Sokol Corpus Christi Athletic Center, thanking us for our donation to them in memory of Lera Nemecek. Anna Marie Moss was not able to make the meeting this month due to an infection in her elbow. We missed her, and wish her a hasty recovery. Lilly Hayek fell and broke her collar bone, and though our phone and greeting committee had difficulty locating which hospital she was in, we were happy to see her in attendance at the meeting. She does not advise going to the emergency room. It is a long and tedious wait at best. They sent her home and told her to see her family doctor the next day anyway! Jerry Elzner made a presentation to Edna Voldan, awarding her a plaque for Lifetime Achiever from SPJST. She is a long-standing member and does great work. Jerry Sijansky presented the award. We took a photograph for our scrapbook. Jerry also reminded us that the District Slet is being held here at Sokol on the weekend of June 6 to 8, and invited all to attend. He also mentioned that SPJST is coming out with a new cookbook so that is something to look forward to. Also, on August 1 and 2 the Czech Heritage State Meeting will be held here. They will have books on genealogy here for all those interested in researching their Czech background. We were happy to see Rosalie Williams and Bud DuPlessis at the meeting. We took up a collection from the attending members to give to them as a wedding gift for their big day on June 14. We wish them much happiness and good luck in their new life together.
Old Business The Homecoming Day was a success. Thank you to the hard work. The Sisters made 40 dozen kolaches. Some of the ladies were from Lodge 88. Sick list—Josephine Bishop is down in her back. Faye Wright led us in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and we remained standing for a moment of silence in memory of Frank Cechan, husband of Jo Cechan, brother of Henry Cechan, and brother in-law of Evelyn Cechan. Faye Wright read the minutes and they were approved as read. Treasurer Rosie Julius could not be here because she was taking a friend for therapy. She told Bertha that the books were in order. Carlyn Ondrusek, Membership Chairwoman said there were a few who had not paid their dues. Bertha told her to call them. Bertha also wanted Carlyn to find out how many 80 year old members we have. Bessie Petr, Martha Franka, Carlyn Ondrusek, and Lillian Jones were absent because they were working at SPJST 84. Georgia Brozek, Sunshine Chairwoman was absent. I called, and she gave me the report of the cards she sent. She sent sympathy cards to Jo Cechan; Henry and Evelyn Cechan for the loss of Jo's Husband and Henry's brother. A get well card was to Julius Podhrasky who had knee surgery. Thinking of you cards were sent to Lillian Hamusek, and Theresa Carper. The members signed a thinking of you card for Georgia Brozek who was not feeling good. We hope all the sick and injured ones can return to our meeting soon. Evelyn Cechan and Jo Cechan thanked everyone who sent sympathy cards. It is so comforting to know you have so many friends at a time like this. Jo Cechan is living in an assisted living home. Her address was passed out for everyone. Faye Wright read the correspondence. There was a card to Esther Cunningham from Ida Fehmer which read, "Hi everyone. I hope I can walk by the next meeting." Theresa Carper is improving from her accident, but she still cannot drive yet. She said she hopes to be at the next meeting. Faye Wright read the birthdays for June and "Happy Birthday" was sung to the celebrants.

The by-laws committee has not met. Esther said if you think the ByLaws should be changed, to send her a letter telling which ones you think need to be changed. Bertha suggested that we should change the FinancialMembership Chairman to create a Financial Chairman separate from the Membership Chairman. This will be discussed under old business. Esther Cunningham will be gone July, August, and September. There will not be a program these months. In October, we are going to have an antique road show. Bring something that has been handed down in your family, anything you have had since your wedding day that you have treasured, or anything old or antique. Husbands do not count. Hostesses for June were Evelyn Cechan, Helen Oates, and thanks to Libbie Elsik for her help. Hostesses for August are Martha Franka, Lillian Jones, and Mary Kubin. Bertha 'announced that the Melodion Band will play Sunday, July 6, 2003 at Sokol for a dinner and dance. Program Chairwoman Esther Cunningham had everyone tell about their fathers. Everyone brought pictures of their fathers and grandfathers. Carolyn Nemec brought her greatgranddaughter, Nicole Oberle, four years old, who told about her father, David. A motion was made to adjourn. We adjourned with our quotation, "Myte se Vydcky radi"—Always Love Another. The do vyhry gifts were drawn and passed out. We had two door prizes. Ennis Sewing
Circle reports on June meeting The Sewing Circle met on June 12, 2003 with 24 members present and two guests, Jerry Kohn and Julius Podhrasky. The meeting was called to order by Sadie Kubin. The minutes were read by Vlasta laznovsky and the treasurer's report was given by Lillie Kosarek. Both were approved as read. Sylvia Laznov sky reported how much money was made on the Polka
Festival quilt prize drawing, and that a lady from the Colony won it. The lady even came and picked it up that very day. Sylvia didn't have to mail it. Pat Fowler reported on the work completed for the scrapbook. She is doing really well on it. She thanked Sylvia for all the copying Sokol did for it. Sadie Kubin thanked everyone for the green plant from the Club and the food, cards, and expressions of sympathy she received from everyone when her friend and companion, Truman Whitfill, passed away. A moment of silence was held for him. Our sunshine person, Eleanora, gave her report on all the cards mailed out. Cards were signed for Adelle Cikanek who fell and was in the Dallas hospital and Mildred Trlica who is not feeling well. Hope you both get better soon. Our birthday sisters were Eleanora Pelzel, Mildred Krajca, Sylvia Laznovsky, Marie Vrla and Lillian Laznovsky to whom we sang, "Happy Birthday." Rosie Bednar's quilt was being quilted by Sisters Geraldine Zhanel, Bessie Laznovsky, Frances Vinkler, Mildred Krajca, Eleanora Pelzel, Martha Ritchey, Dorothy Prachyl, Evelyn Slovak, and Rosie, herself. Rosie thanked all the girls who worked on the quilt and reported she is donating it to the Telico Fire Department for a prize drawing. That is so nice, Rosie.
We will not quilt in July. In August, we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl. In September, we will quilt for our Christmas party prize drawing. October will be Lillie Kosarek's quilt. We have no one booked for November. It was discussed and decided that in July, guess because it is so hot, we will not bring covered dishes for our lunch. The officers will buy meat and cheese trays, chip and dips, and watermelon. The Club will pay. Won't that be nice! Also, since we are not quilting, we are to doing something for show and tell. That sounds like fun. I already know what I am bringing. We are also having a white elephant sale. So bring something to sell and some money to buy. Our gathering will start around 10 a.m. The door prize was brought by Georgie Tupy and won by Liddie Pavelka. Sister Liddie told us of all her good luck, while walking and looking down, finding money different times and different places. She was still lucky because her prize was money. We really enjoyed your story. We were happy for you and hope you will keep being lucky. Everyone enjoyed the little gift exchange. I know I did. There will be no gift exchange in July—just show and tell and white elephant sale. Thank you goes out to Frances Vinkler for donating cups. Thank you also to Sylvia Laznovsky, Libbie Wisniewski, and Rose Mynarcik for

12NESTNIK—Wednesday, July 2, 2003 getting the lunch ready and to Betty Steagall for washing dishes. Libbie Elsik is looking forward to her family reunion on the Elsik side at Lake Belton in June. Have a great time. You can tell us about it in July. Sister Dorothy Prachyl and her husband enjoyed a visit from their daughter and son in-law, Cathy and Bill Cole and grandsons, Andrew, age five and one half, and Adam, age four. The Coles live in Naperville, Illinois. I know Dorothy enjoyed every minute they were here. I almost forgot to tell you. Sylvia announced the Melodion Band will be at the Sokol Hall July 1 for a gathering. You are to bring a covered dish. We will eat, then enjoy listening to the beautiful music or dance if you like. Bertha Podhrasky also announced the Melodion Band will be at the Dallas Sokol Hall on July 6. They will have a dinner and dance. This will be the band's last performance before it leaves. We are all wishing Jerry Koubek our dear friend, a speedy recovery. He is at the Ennis Care for therapy.
Sokol Slet Corpus Christi I must tell you about our trip to Corpus Christi for the Sokol Slet. We had a great time. I had been there for a slet in 1948—many, many years ago when I was very, very young. It was fun looking at old pictures from back then and reminiscing with old friends. My granddaughter, Calleigh, competed and did very well. Can you believe, I took part in a calisthenics number? It took me forever to learn it, but it was fun, and I enjoyed it very much. My sister, Lil, said I did good. There was a large group from Ennis—lots of young kids and some older kids, like myself. Vlasta and Sylvia Laznovsky were also in the calisthenics number. I was glad I talked my other half, Pete, into going. Our son, Trent, drove, Libbie and Lil were with us. Truly had a great time. We told jokes, played games, sang songs (we don't sing very well) and talked all the way there and back. This is my first time to write, please excuse all my errors. Hopefully, I will do better next time. Don't forget in July—no food, no little gifts, only show and tell, white elephant sale items and money. See you there. Georgie Morales, Reporter —SPJST-

Dear Members, July 13 is only a few weeks away and we will once again be having the most fun of the year – camp! I am so excited! Let's go back in time 50 years. The year was 1953. "I Love Lucy" was the number one show on television (and is still my favorite). Saran Wrap was created. Gas was 22 cents per gallon and SPJST Youth Clubs were started. In honor of this 50th anniversary, this year's camp theme will revolve around the fifties. We have so many events planned for camp. Fifties games, a sock hop, soda shop, and possibly a special guest are all in the works along with our normal camp activities of swim-t. ming, canoeing, horseback riding, crafts, and hikes. I hope each of you is planning to attend. Here's the list of things to pack:
