They that wash on Monday, have all the week to dry; They that wash on Tuesday are not so much awry; They that wash on Wednesday are not so much to blame They that wash on Thursday, wash for very shame; They that wash on Friday, wash in sorry need They that wash on Saturday, are lazy folk indeed! —Old Nursery Rhyme
Laundry was the household chore housewives dreaded the most, especially without running water. On the night before wash day, clothes were soaked in tubs of warm water. First thing the next morning, the women scrubbed the clothes by hand on a washboard. The homemade soap was a strong irritant, very hard on hands and required much work to make. It was made from animal fat and lye cooked together. Even the lye had to be made by straining water through wood ashes collected in a barrel. The scrubbed clothes then needed to be boiled in big tubs (Continued on page five.)

Annie joined Lodge 25 on September 3, 1954 and was awarded the SPJST Lifetime Achiever Award for more than 50 years of loyal service to the lodge. Both Annie and Joe were active members throughout the years. While her husband, Joe, was hall manager and running the bar, Annie could be found working in the kitchen at the annual polka festivals, socials or catering family and friends' weddings. And Annie made "everybody's" wedding cake — a hobby that Annie fell in love with at the early age of 16 by baking for family members. She recalls that she also made her own wedding cake. In those days, a Czech tradition that was carried out at her wedding was to hollow out the top layer'of the cake. Then wedding guests would fill it up with money for the bride and groom! Annie enjoyed helping people by baking their wedding cake and only charging them for the ingredients. Annie served the Ennis community with her talent for 50 years — from 1924 to 1974, when her daughter, Betty took over the baking business. Annie recalls how she and Joe made their living off the land. They raised chickens, ducks, guineas, pigs, and cattle and a garden was planted every year. Anything that could be canned was and potatoes were stored in the cellar for winter eating. Annie made homemade egg noodles and they had their own milk cow. Joe and the boys planted, chopped, picked and sold cotton. They also planted and harvested hay and grain. The girls did their share of chopping
There were two who came and played their heart out, but the shoes would not get close enough. They were Linda and Ruth Wuenche from Lodge 48, Beyersville. They received the consolation prize of two monkeys. They were happy to go home with something. The most improved team was John and Diana Engelke form Lodge 66, Waco. They said they couldn't win, and they couldn't come in last place. Things will be much better next year. We were happy to see Woody Richards, Administrator for the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home, Number One, Taylor. He was George Pauling's partner. We had several family challenges going. Their line was "I want to beat them so I can take the bragging rights home." They had a great time, and I am sure the ride home was as entertaining. One of our regular teams, Bill Holman and Wilbert Nelson didn't make it, and we all missed them. We hope to see you next year. Mark your calendars for the State Horseshoe Tournament for May 15, 2004. This will be the third Saturday of May. Fraternally, Gladys Yates State Fraternal Activities Coordinator ---SPJSTand picking and also did chores around the house - cooking and cleaning and taking care of the younger children. All of Annie's children live in Ennis and have been members of the SPJST as are most of the grandchildren, great-grandchildren and greatgreat grandchildren. At the 2002 Polka Festival, Annie was proud to dress up in a Czech kroj and ride the lodge's float as a five generation SPJST member. The five generations consisted of herself, daughter Margaret Krajca, granddaughter Rita Holland, great-grandson Brian Holland and great-great-grandson, Austen Holland. Family is very important to Annie and she made sure the family stayed together by cooking large meals for every holiday. Traditionally through the years, each year, the Martinek family gathered together seven times New Year's Day, Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day, Annie's birthday in July and Joe's birthday in October and Christmas. And when the grandchildren were growing up, the tradition was started where each summer the girls would spend three days together and the same for the boys. The family expresses their thanks to Grandma for all the special memories made! Annie is proud that her family is also carrying on the SPJST traditions that she and Joe started many years ago at the lodge. She enjoys watching her family active in the lodge and youth club and she continues to attend as many lodge functions as possible. This year, the family and youth club "joined hands" and painted her house. On the morning of May 3, approximately 65 people showed up with ladders and paint brushes in hand. By the end of the day the house was painted and more memories made. —SPJST-

Wash day blues (Continued from page 1.) where they were stirred constantly with a long pole. Then the clothes were dragged out of the water with a wash stick, rinsed in plain water, and rinsed again. Now, it was time to wring the clothes. If one was lucky, there was a hand-cranked wringer. If not, each piece had to be wrung individually by hand. Finally, the clothes were ready to hang outside to dry. In summer or winter, it made no difference. In my childhood, I can remember seeing frozen clothing on the line. The word wrinkle - free, did not exist, and so all clothes needed to be ironed once dried. Now, the housewife had to heat up the stove to heat the sad irons. It might take as many as three irons to finish a single shirt. The family learned not to expect a hot supper on laundry day. Within the museum's collection,

there is a large iron kettle used for laundry along with a wooden beater and paddle used in the washing process. The museum also has a very good example of an early non-electric wooden washing machine invented by William Blackstone in 1874 for his wife's birthday and which sold originally for $2.50. This hand crank operated machine was used by John and Frances (Adam) Babovec and donated by their children. Additionally, the museum has an early example of electric washer; "The Easy vaccine Electric Washer" patented in 1912. The museum also displays many good examples of flat irons, gas irons, and early electric irons. So the next time you complain about the laundry, visit the SPJST Library, Archives and Museum and see our collection of our foremothers' conveniences and labor-saving devices. Then think about the good old days and smile. Submitted by, Kathy Davis SPJST LAM Volunteer

Lodge 1, Fayetteville remembers Lee Roy Matocha The announcement of Lee Roy Matocha's death on Saturday, July 12, 2003 shocked everyone as he was a well-known accordion musician throughout the polka music world. Lee Roy has been an SPJST member for the past 34 years at Fayetteville Lodge 1 and was quite proud to promote Czech heritage through music. The world famous accordion player had an influence on polka and waltz music starting at an early age, playing the accordion with his uncle, the Zbranek's Lee Roy Matocha Accordion Band of West Point. In 1952, Lee Roy joined the Lee use Band of LaGrange and continued performing with them until 1964. Lee Roy formed his own band, Lee Roy Matocha's Orchestra, and derived his notoriety in providing musical entertainment for church picnics/celebrations, weddings, fund raisers, and numerous historic memorable events. Lee Roy also took on the role of disc jockey in 1959 and as of this date, was the only one left of this era conducting Czech programs, playing purely polkas, marches, and waltzes on seven different radio stations. After retiring his band, he remained very active at age of 70 playing in local bands and providing accompaniment for the Fayette Czech Singers. He stated that providing Czech music satisfied him and made him feel good in bringing happiness and joy to people which included providing entertainment at the convalescent homes and retirement homes in the area. Quite often in a song, you would hear him say, "Is everybody happy?" To quote him, "Every song has an end," and thus, his life has ended on earth. However, we know that Lee Roy, the accordion man, has gone to heaven to join the big angel band. Fraternally submitted, Irene Polansky —SPJST-

Wednesday, July 23, 2003—ViSTNIK/9 Dorothy was not there. She was kind enough to loan us her decorations even though she could not attend. We thank her again for all that she does for our Club. Our guests were Cassie McDonald and her friend, Deeann Wagner with Frances McDonald, Adrianna and Jonathan White with their mom, Rhonda, and newlywed, Bud DuPlessis with his bride, Rosalie Williams. Congratulations to the two of them. They tied the knot on June 14. We received a note from Driscoll Children's Hospital thanking us for our donation to them in memory of Victor Novosad. We also received a thank you from Jerry Sijansky for the ad that the Circle bought for the SLET program booklet. Anna Marie Moss was back after having been ill; it's always good to have her with us. She thanked us for the get well card that we sent and said that she was not yet completely well. So we'll keep her in our prayers. Helen and Clem Kasparek were not able to be with us; they have been spending most of their time in Shiner taking care of Helen's parents while commuting back here occasionally to look after things on the home front. Our thoughts are also with them as they travel back and forth. Jerry Elzner was also absent from the meeting. He had planned to be back from the Czech Republic in time for the meeting, but his plane was delayed, and he had to stay overnight in Paris. We missed him and were unable to sing, "Happy Birthday" to him, nor to his twin sister, Agnes Burge, or to Mattie Netek—all the birthday folks were absent. Betty Jurica relayed that after nearly two years in a nursing home, her sister, Carrie Veselka, is finally coming around and recognizing family and friends and able to communicate again. They think that perhaps Carrie was receiving too much medication, and once some of that was withdrawn she responded very favorably. What a great outcome to a frustratingly long recovery! We are so happy for the family. We finished the meeting with a recitation of our motto, gave out the door prizes to the lucky recipients, and had a hearty traditional Fourth of July lunch of hot dogs with all the trimmings.
