School boy grows up fast against South Pacific backdrop When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Richard Jenke was only 14 years old, but he was more than ready to play his part in the conflict. "This was the biggest shock our nation had had in a long time," remembers his wife, Irma. Richard clearly recalls the day after the bombing. "(It was) the first time I skipped school in my entire life . . . to try and join the Marines," he laughs. "Guys were there by the hundreds to enlist, and there I was, 14 years old. The guys said, 'Son, you go on home and grow up and come back to see us."' Determined to serve his country, Richard contrived a story to fool the Navy recruiters into thinking he was old enough to enlist. To his surprise,

the recruiters believed his tall tale, and by 1942, Richard was serving aboard a Navy submarine in the Pacific. Richard had a very important role aboard the diesel-powered submarine. "I served as the electrician," he explains. "It was a tough way to go. My job was to take care of the batteries, take care of the generators, motors, and anything else electrical." He had to clean off the carbon that would build up on the motors and generators so they would run smoothly. Two hundred and fifty-two battery cells weighing more than 1,500 pounds were also under Richard's care. "When I wasn't doing that, I was on propulsion," he adds. This meant that Richard had to monitor the transfer of power from the generators to the motors, an extremely important job. The electricity Richard helped generate kept the submarine cruising through the Pacific at about 10 miles per hour. "Modern day submarines are very fast. Much faster than that," he says. Richard traveled all over the Pacific as his submarine made regular patrols of the ocean. He was carried from

The Priority Life Plan will help to ensure that when you die, your loved ones will be protected by providing for final expenses. And because it is a whole life certificate, the Priority Life Plan builds cash value that is available for you to use for whatever you like — no questions asked. Most applicants are expected to qualify for the plan. The SPJST Priority Life Plan is a graded plan only if you have certain pre-existing health impairIn the ments. event that you are graded, your death benefit during the first three years, would be the return of premiums paid plus 20 percent. If death occurs accidentally during the first three years the death benefit would be the face amount of your certificate. For death from any cause after the first three years, the death benefit will be the ultimate face amount. Premiums vary according to your age and sex. For example, the monthly premium for a $10,000 certificate for a 25-year old male is $14.30. The same amount of coverage for 50-year old female would be $25.80 monthly. Letters from Our Members Former State King Jarod Olds helping impoverished in Nigeria Dear Readers, On June 26, 2003, my 19 year old brother, 2000 - 2001 State King Jarod Olds, ventured solo all the way to serve the impoverished people of Nigeria. Before leaving for Nigeria, Jarod had to get several shots for diseases like yellow fever and malaria. He first stopped in Frankfurt, Germany where he was loaded onto a
different plane. Many hours later, he finally arrived in Nigeria's capital city, Abuja, where he was forced to open his suitcases and take out his belongings one by one. Nigeria, incidentally, is one of the five African countries recently visited by President Bush. In an email recently sent by him, he described the airport as being "scary, stressful, and nothing like DFW." While Jarod is there, he will be working in villages with people who are blind, deaf, and who have leprosy. Because most of the inhabitants in Nigeria are Muslim, Jarod has to be very particular in what he teaches from the Bible as to not interfere with their beliefs.

Members' Letters (Continued from page four.
Lodge 25, Ennis mom expresses thanks to members Dear Members, On Friday June 13, my seven year old daughter, Tori had surgery. The next week she was ready and excited to go to District Three Youth Achievement Day (YAD). I just want to take the time to say thank you for the prayers, cards, gifts, and the phone calls she got while she was down (even if she didn't stay down long).
Without the support of our youth club sending cards, gifts, phone calls, and Bessie's understanding, she would never have been able to participate and do as well as she did. She has even made it to State YAD. She had something to look forward to and her goal was to get better so she could enter her projects. She amazed the doctors and nurses with her recovery. She wanted to do a talent, but I thought that would be pushing it for her. I just wanted to take the time to show how important the youth club and activities can be to a member. She is doing a lot better now. Thank you again to the SPJST family for its support and understanding. Fraternally, Sheila Motley —SPJST-

Lodge 79, Corpus Christi reports on July meeting After 30 days in the Czech Republic, it is good to be back in the good ol' USA. At our July meeting, we discussed the upcoming Texas Czech Heritage Society summer meeting which will be held at Sokol Hall here in Corpus Christi, August 1 - 2, 2003. We will be baking kolaches for this event and for the Texas agriculture agents who will be having their annual meeting in Corpus Christi. Their theme this year is the Czech Republic. Many Czechs were instrumental in helping open our county to farming at the turn of the 18th century. At the CHS meeting, August 1 to 2, members are being asked to help with selling dinner and dance tickets and helping in the kitchen and bar. The Majek Orchestra will play for a public dance on August 2 from 7 to 11 p.m. So put on your dancing shoes, grab a couple of friends, come out and have some good fun The dance is $6 per person and the dinner served at 12 noon and catered by Mikeska's from El Campo is $7. There will be genealogy books and experts present both days to help you trace or find your ancestors in the old country. The public is invited to the seminar which is free. We also voted to buy a cordless sound system for the hall—our monthly donation. It was real good to see Brother Frank Sijansky at the meeting. Brother Frank had a stay in the hospital—no place to be for anyone! So in closing, I hope to see a lot of our members and members from other lodges at this great two-day event. They always love these camps and come back with some good stories. We are proud of the District King Brian Graska and Queen Stephanie Boyce, both of Lodge 88. Lee Roy Matocha, who had a very popular band for about 40 years, passed away recently. He played at the lodge for years and had many friends all over Texas. He loved and promoted Czech music on his radio programs and everywhere he played. Here I go reminiscing again: Over 30 years ago when my mother, Mrs. Frank Krejci of Weimar attended some of our dances, Lee Roy always dedicated her favorite number, "U Studanky Sedela" to "Granny" Krejci. She loved it. Bennie Kocich and Helen Kubicek often came to the table to sing with her. Recently, Willie Mae Ennis was in the hospital. Cleburn Lincke is doing okay recuperating from his accident. Ed Miculka is still having problems. We hope all of them are doing well by now. Lodge 155, Austin President Ted Marek presents SPJST scholarship to grandson, John Hall Ted Marek, President of Lodge 155, Austin, Texas recently presented the SPJST Scholarship of $1,000 to John "Johnny" Allen Hall, II of Cuero, Texas. Oprah Winfrey Show on July 14 which I watched. I was so excited for Libbie as they were three precious little girls, dressed so cute. Oprah's show was helping people redo their yards, rooms, and things like that. These three little girls were lying across their bed with feet sticking up, letters on the bottom saying, H-E-L-P U-S. They needed help in finding beds for them, as they are getting bigger in their small room. Oprah surprised them on the show with a regular-sized bed with trundle bed underneath and twin bunk on top. They also get all the bedding for it, each their own pillows, with their names on them, table, and chair. I don't know what all. They were so excited. Their parents were in the audience. We had a delicious lunch. Dorothy Prachyl brought turkey, ham, cheese trays, chips, and dips. Vlasta Laznovsky brought watermelon. She had every little slice cut perfectly. Lil Kosarek baked six pies—pecan, cream cheese and pecan, apple and pineapple—all were delicious. Several others brought goodies. The club reimbursed everyone except those who brought special goodies. It was all good, and I ate too much. Thank you, officers, for a job well done.

John Hall, II accepts SPJST scholarship from grandfather Ted Marek, President of Lodge 155, Austin. Johnny was an honor graduate of, Cuero High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society, a state alternate for UIL Cross Examination debate, Parliamentarian of the Student Council, member of the informative speaking team, an officer of the Library Student Advisory Council and a football and baseball letterman. Johnny was named "AllTournament" in the Stanley Krist baseball tournament and was named All-District as a shortstop for the Cuero Gobblers. He also led 27AAA baseball in the least batters walked during the season while serving as one of the top batters in the Victoria area. At the end of the 2002 football season, Johnny was named AllDistrict in 27AAA UIL with 114 tackles as linebacker. Johnny was offered two college opportunities to play football and one in baseball. He has decided, however, to not play college football or baseball, but devote himself to his academic studies at the University of Texas at Austin where he will be enrolled in the college liberal arts. Johnny, his parents John and Janette Hall, and his sister, Jennifer, who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, Texas in May 2003 in the Honor's Business Program, are all members of SPJST Lodge 155 in Austin, Texas. —SPJST-
Sadie Kubin brought crocheted items— an afghan and two shawls (these .were really nice); and an aluminum serving tray made by someone as a school project. Geraldine Zhanel had a beautiful crochet bedspread made by her sister in-law, Mary Zhanel. If I understood correctly, the Zlianel family had a drawing for it, and Geraldine was the lucky person. Bessie Laznovsky had a really old gas iron. I think I can remember when my mom ironed with a similar one. Marie Vrla brought a little iron with detachable handle. You had to heat it on the stove to get it hot. Marie, it was good to see you again. Dorothy Prachyl had a really little iron. She said it was a toy iron which she used to iron her doll clothes with. Bet that was fun! Rose Mynarcik brought a beautiful unicorn sculpture made by Jerry Koubek, our dear friend. Martha Ritchey had two old quilt tops, pieced by her grandmother, and a beautiful crocheted scarf. She said that is what she does in the winter. Lillie Kosarek showed a very old quilt our mother received as a wedding gift made by our grandpa Patril's mother, Katerina Sonka Patril. It was a dutch doll quilt. Some of the dolls had already lost their shoes and one her head and bonnet. The quilt must be at least 75 to 80 years old. Vlasta Laznovsky showed some really neat things — a glass cake stand that her mom and dad used for their wedding cake (it wasn't very big either); and a butter chum that she had to use all the time because her brother sang to the cows which made them give more milk, then she had more butter to churn. She even had the cracked bowl her mother put the butter in. Vlasta also told about an old gas lamp they used. It had to be pumped and had two little socks that made the light. I remember them. Sylvia Laznovsky also had some neat things—a poppyseed grinder, a butter chum and mold, garlic press, and several old pictures —one of her father's family taken in 1916, her mother's family, the Trojacek's, and one of her grandmother Laznovsky, the Zika family. TREE PLANTING: Pictured, from left, Alma Schulz, Lynn Johnsen and Marvin Schulz devoted a recent Sunday afternoon planting three small trees at the lodge hall. Thanks to District Five Director Larry W. Pflughaupt who donated the trees. Wisniewski had a beautiful white quilt with embroidery of posted flowers on every other square. The blank squares were quilted flowers same as the embroidered ones—simply beautiful! When her husband passed away 22 years ago, she was very lonesome and couldn't sleep. She started the quilt and would work on it everyday till 2 a.m. She said it didn't take her very long to finish. It was really, really pretty. She also had a lovely butterfly pillow she made, the pattern was from a butterfly quilt. Frances Vinkler showed off her pretty pineapple crocheted centerpiece, letter holder, and birdhouse she made. I can't explain how, but it was really pretty. I brought a—guess I'll call it a picture. It is framed and hangs on the wall. My sister, Lil, made it for me one year for Christmas. It has a crocheted doily made by mom and pieces of my daddy's ties. It is really is a special remembrance of both my mom and dad. I apologize if I missed anyone. If I did, I will tell about it next month. I received a lovely note from Georgia and Jerry Stransky. Thank you so much. You made my day. The other day, Calleigh my granddaughter, asked about Rose Anna Danna from Fort Worth. If you read this, Rose Anna Danna, she sends a big hello. We really enjoyed you and Marie eating with us in Corpus. I visited with Jerry Koubek, Katie Omelina, Mary and Otto Macalik, and Dorothy Ventrca at the Ennis Care Center. They are all looking good and doing well. In August, we will quilt for Dorothy Prachyl, remember we will have to bring a covered dish, little gift, stay cool, and have a great July. See you soon. Fort Worth Friendship Club reports on July meeting Thirty-nine members of the Fort Worth Friendship Club met at Ryans Steak Hodse on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 for our annual eating out social. Mary Ann. nd Joe Kozel met everyone at the door and presented them with a ticket for lunch. Our private room was filled with lots of visiting going on. President Alice called the meeting to order. The singing of "Happy Birthday" went out to July celebrants of Jeanie Mason, Kathy Ormsbee, Billye Starr, Rosie Steinman, Martha Studer, Virgie Valentine, and Dorothy Way. May you have many more. Alice reminded everyone that August is a designated month for bringing food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry and month for our little gift exchange. Also in August, we will be honored with the first appearance of the St. Thomas Youth Choir who will sing for us. Alice further reported we were invited to join the Lodge 92 Ladies Circle on a bus trip to Bossier City on July 15. Rosie Steinman was taking reservations. We had such a good time on our last trip. August hostesses will be Elsie Anders, Sharron Connelly, Barbara Orand, and Lillian Smith. Rose Ann Spann was asked to say grace and everyone enjoyed a most plentiful lunch. We ate, and ate some more. I have a correction to make on my last article with regard to the six-week summer program for abused children. (Continued on page 12.)

These abused children are not from St. Thomas Church, but 22 St. Thomas Church children with work with the group. Sony for my mistake.
News of Members Joe and Mary Ann Kozel are the proud grandparents of Zoie Elizabeth Camp who was born on June 20. Zoie's parents are Charles and Donna Camp. Congratulations! Lydia and Roy Alholm were proudly showing off a "Certificate of Appreciation" to grandma and grandpa Alholm from their grandson, Daniel, who recently graduated from Law School at the Loyola University of Chicago. Daniel will be taking his bar exam soon. Best of luck, Daniel! Elsie Anders, her two children, and their families—nine in all—enjoyed a week's vacation at the Red River Lodge in New Mexico. Elsie said they enjoyed the cool weather and being outdoors. Rose Ann and Jimmy Spann recently attended a friend's wedding in Las Vegas. Rose Ann said the wedding was fun and they also enjoyed the sights of Las Vegas. Anna Johnson has a new greatgranddaughter, Carleigh Alison, born in Austin. Proud parents are Melissa and Irvin Janak. Carleigh was named after her grandpa and uncle. Anna has already taken out an SPJST insurance certificate on her. There were 14 ladies and gentlemen from the Friendship Club joining the Lodge 92 group on the bus trip to Bossier City. While I didn't get to go this time, I hear lots of good reports on the fun time everyone had. Joe Kozel
brought his accordion and entertained, then lots of bingo was played on the bus. When the bus stopped for a break at McDonald's in Tyler, Betty Landsfield ran into a couple of friends she had not seen in a long time. These were some old dancing friends. Then at the casino, she ran into another friend. It seems Betty knows folks everywhere, and she said it was so nice to see them again. I heard that Lucille Kret won enough to buy a new television as her's went out a few days before the trip. I also hear Lydia Alholm was a winner, and that Rosie Steinman was a bingo winner, not a casino winner. Thanks Lodge 92 Ladies Circle for inviting us. Prayers and thoughts go out to Rosie Steinman and family. Rosie's son, Donald, is scheduled to have quadruple by-pass surgery this week, and daughter, Mary Hargiss, is scheduled to begin her chemotherapy. Best wishes go out to both Donald and Mary for a successful and complete recovery. Georgie Morales has started reporting for the Ennis Sewing Circle with her first report being last month. I think she did a great job This is my sister, Georgie Rose, and I hope all of you will start reading her articles. Czech Class Mary Schneider, Agnes Reznicek, Lil Kosarek, and I are still attending Czech Class each Thursday evening. Joe Janecka is doing such a good job trying to teach nouns and gender, verbs and tense, adverbs, adjectives, when soft or hard, in Czech. It is not an easy task. We have even started reading some, and what really hurts, there are two children in class and they can read better than us older folks. We have also covered numbers, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, colors, and body parts. We are learning so many new words. At the end of each class, we also sing Czech songs. Going to school is fun, especially since the teacher doesn't grade us! The next meeting is on August 6, 2003. It's back to the kitchen as you need to bring a covered dish for lunch. Don't forget your gift for the exchange and food items for St. Thomas Food Pantry. See you then! Libbie Vrla, Reporter —SPJST-

Ueme se t esky Let. Us Study Czech Lekce Jedenadvacati— Lesson 21 The Seven Cases— Sedm pada What is a case? A case is the form which shows, the function of a noun, adjective, or pronoun, in the sentence, and its relation to other words in the sentence. There are seven such cases in the Czech language. I. NOMINATIVE, or subject ease: prvni pad— answers the questions:. KDO— who? (is the doer of, or subjected to, some action?); CO— what? (lifeless object or event is something said about?) Ex.: KDO tam chodi? Karel tam jde. riere Karel is in the nom. case. Co se tam deje? Schtize se tam kona. Here schflze is in the nom. case. GENITIVE Case— druhjr pad, has a function similar to the English possessive case, (my friend's house, or the house of my friend). The genitive has acquired a wide range of meaning besides the basic sense of BELONGING. It answers the questions: t eho? of what?, CI? whose? Ex.: Z 6eho je to vjrrabene a z litiny. 6 je to pudk? Je to putik meho otce. (Otce, here is in the gen. case). DATIVE Case— tfeti pad, is primarily a case of direction marking end or result towards which an act proceeds. It is therefore used after the verbs GIVING, SENDING, SAYING, or WRITING something to someone. It answers the questions KOMU?, to whom?, and CEMU?, to what? Ex.: Komu pi geg? Pflu domu tatinkovi. (Tatinkovi here is in the dative case). Cemu poslouchag Posloucham vysilacf stanici. (Stanici is in the dative case). 4. ACCUSATIVE, or Direct object case— 6tvrtSt pad; marks the receiver of the action or the thing acted upon by the subject. It answers the questions: KOHO? whom?, and CO what?
Ex.: Koho's tam videl? Videl jsem tam meho pfitele. (pfftele is in the acc. case). Co tam vidir Vidim moji matku. (matku is in the acc. case) 5. VOCATIVE Case— paty pad— is used for addressing or calling to a person or a thing. Ex.: Bratte Novikul ()tee nub! Matko ma! 6. LOCATIVE, or prepositionalgesq, pad; is always used with prepositions. It cannot stand alone. It expresses position in time or space. It answers the questions KDE? where? 0 kom? About whom? 0 6em? About what? Ex.: Kde je Marie? Sedi na schodech. (na schodech is in the loc. case) O kom mluvig? Mluvfm o teti6ce. (0 teti&e is in the loc. case) 0 6em se jednalo? Jednalo se o rianStch bodech. (o rfiznSrch bodech is in the loc. case) 7. INSTRUMENTAL— sedmSr pad — expresses the means, way, manner, instrument, or casual condition. It answers the questions (s) kS im? with with what? whom?, (s)
