Who's that knocking at my door? If you're in South Texas, it could be Juan or Terry! Cold calling. As the words imply, it means calling — unannounced — on an individual and selling him or her on the virtues of your product or service. Remember the old door-todoor salesman? That's cold calling and for many years, it was the preferred method of generating new business for practically all companies and salespeople. Practically all businesses — but not the SPJST. Why is that? "We just didn't operate that lway," says Supreme Lodge Chairman and District Seven Director Bob Bayer. "There may have been a few who took this route; however, most of the business was generated as a result of referred leads and sales reps who simply worked their immediate circle of family and friends." "And that's great. That's what built this Society," says Brother Bayer. "At the same time," he observes, "We're selling the SPJST short when we don't look beyond referred leads and our familiar contacts. Door-to-door selling is just a good way to stimulate new growth."
Here's How It's Done Easier said than done, right? Well, according to two of SPJST's newest sales representatives, there's no better route to building a lodge than calling on prospective members door-to-door. Sales Representatives Juan Lopez and Terry Hernandez were in Temple with their families on July 24 to organize SPJST Lodge 239, Hondo and a companion youth club. (Continued on page four)

Give It a Try So much of what we do — in life and in our lodges — is simply an extension of what we have done in the past. For instance, our monthly lodge meetings pretty much follow the same format as the meeting that came before and so on . . . You could say they're "routine." Routine can be good. It provides an orderly approach to getting things done. But you know what? Routine gets even better with a regular injection of innovation and creativity. Let's talk a little about those lodge meetings for a while: You need to go. Seriously. It's important that you attend. That may sound stern; however it needs to be said Going to your local lodge meetings is a good routine to get into Just like getting a regular haircut. If you can't go every month, try to go at least every other month. And to those whose lodges meet quarterly, try to go all the time. Lodge meetings are "square one," so to speak, when it comes to implementing fraternalism at the lodge level. In lodge meetings, new and lasting friendships are forged. Too, it's in our lodge meetings that the seeds of innovation and creativity are planted and cultivated. In that regard, the Vestnik offers its readers regular reports of the noteworthy happenings taking place in our lodges and around the state. This week's cover story on Juan and Terry provides a good example. These two gentlemen — both very new to the organization — are excited about the membership in the SPJST and all that the Society has to offer them and their community. Visiting with them caused me to reflect on why we're here and on the potential that our lodges and the SPJST possess. During our interview, Terry commented, "With every member that I sign up, I hope and pray that he or she is good and helps the SPJST. When you become a member, you're a part of the family. And when you're part of a family, you help each other. That's the way fraternalism works. SPJST is a fraternal benefit society — and it's a business. Kind of like a family business where every member has an interest in seeing to it that his or her lodge achieves its potential. There are few limiting factors placed on SPJST lodges and how they choose to
meet their fraternal obligations. Simply stated, the SPJST remains an idea in the making. Your good ideas and active participation can make a positive difference in your lodge and its impact on your community. Give it a try! —SPJST-

Cold calling (Continued from page one. Terry is a native of Hondo and Juan hails from San Juan in the Rio Grande Valley. Located 40 miles west of San Antonio in Medina, County, Hondo got its name from the Spanish word for "deep," in reference to the highbanked creek that runs through the farming and ranching area. Original settlers in the area came from AlsaceLorraine, Germany, Belgium and Mexico. These days, it's a friendly town of 7,900. And it's here in Hondo that Juan and Terry want to stay and where they they would like to see SPJST become a positive force. In fact, Terry, who is president of the fledgling lodge and Juan, who is vice president, have already been eyeing sites around town, talking about where they'd like to build their lodge hall! With any luck, they'll get their way. In just two short months, Juan and Terry have written well over 200 applications for membership in the SPJST. That's not a misprint. As of this writing, the actual number was actually 220. How Did It All Happen? According to Juan, it started when he saw an advertisement for SPJST in the local newspaper, the Honda Anvil Herald. "I called the number and the next thing I knew, I was talking to State Field Representative Hector Garcia. I liked what he had to say about SPJST so I called my friend, Terry to see if he'd be interested, too." He was. Longtime friends, Juan and Terry both have sales backgrounds. Juan, in fact, has been selling life insurance in the South Texas area since 1990. In short order, Juan and Terry received their SPJST sales training from Hector. After that, it was off to the races. "SPJST is number one in my book," says Brother Lopez. "It's the best company I've ever worked for. That goes for the products, the personnel, the underwriting support, and the mission of the company. I have a passion for what I'm doing." Terry echoes these sentiments, "I believe in what I'm doing. I know that I am providing a real and valuable service to the people that I tell about SPJST."
Both Juan and Terry give the SPJST exceptionally high marks for the society's emphasis on youth- and family-oriented activities. Juan and his wife, Anarae, have three children; Terry and his wife, Tammy, have four children. How Did It All Happen? In spite of the Society's 106-year track record, many of the people that Juan and Terry encounter in their door-to-door approach to selling have no prior knowledge of the SPJST. It's at times like these that the two sales representatives must rely on their personal selling strengths. "Before I can sell SPJST, I have to sell myself," says Terry. "Find some way to get their attention — get them to smile — and then get invited inside. I've got to put that person at ease before I can hope to sell them on the organization." How does he do it? "A lot of it's attitude," says Terry. "I love to help people. I love what I do and I believe in the product I sell. All that and I-try to be creative and have some fun with it." He continues, "The hours that I invest in informing someone about SPJST is time well spent. The more a person knows about our life insurance and all of the extra benefits, the more likely he is to buy. It becomes a winwin situation for everyone." Juan and Terry's cold calling approach does indeed lead to sales. "It may not result in a sale at first but it can lead to a follow-up opportunity that results in a sale." But it doesn't end there. Juan explains,"Once I've sold to someone, I make it a point to get at least four or five new sales leads from that person. If I don't, I've missed an opportunity —.and not just to make a sale — but to help someone plan for their future." Something to Think About "Juan and Terry are doing very well here in Hondo and the surrounding communities," says Brother Bayer, who was born in Hondo and raised in nearby Castroville. "They're really helping the SPJST break open the South Texas market. What they're doing — the 'cold-calling' approach — I really believe could be effective in other parts of the state as well --especially in those areas where SPJST enjoys strong name recognition."

The June meeting was productive as usual. The repair of the hall is HA; on schedule and we are fortunate that our President Douglas Williams found a carpenter whose charges are most reasonable. Suffice to say, he knows, his way around and our lodge profits by it. Virginia is a hard worker and buys kitchen and bar supplies wherever and whenever they are on sale. She does so on her own time traveling at her own expense. Such dedication is found only once in a blue moon. Once again, Frank and Dorothy Tomascik furnished the door prizes along with Doug's salary of $5. Derrick Ruzicka said he could have brought tomatoes but assumed we all had them. Not so, as several of us don't have gardens. I was the surprised recipient of a potted bouquet of flowers from Johnnie and Clara Balusek to show their appreciation for my literary efforts in his behalf. I felt I was undeserving of their gratitude as I only did what was his due. Accompanied by Douglas Williams, I appeared last week before the Supreme Lodge in session to get an explanation why my recent letter to the Vestnik was rejected by the Publication Committee for publication. I must hasten to add that the meeting was non-confrontational and the issue was resolved on an amicable note. Please note that our next meeting will be Monday, August 11 at 7 p.m. Fraternally yours, Hilda Kuzel Burtis —SPJST-

Tourney Brings Fish to S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor Story by Aaron Reed • Taylor Daily Press On a grassy lawn shaded by towering trees recently, about two dozen elderly residents of the S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home No. 1 in Taylor ringed an 800-square foot pool. Another 30 or so sat at tables on the patio, enjoying the sounds of a trio playing tunes from the likes of Bob Wills and Pappy Daniels. Around the pool, attention was focused on brightly colored floats bobbing in the water and on the sleek, dark shapes moving below them. Suddenly, one of the rods bends double and a seemingly frail woman struggles to keep it in her grip. After she lands the fish, with a little help from her friends, Emily Patschke talked about what the backyard fishing tournament means to her. "I fished a lot in my younger days," she said. "We'd go out to Lexington. We spent many an hour there." Catfish, like the five-pound bruiser she had just landed — her third one for the day — are her favorite kind of fish. "The others I caught at the ranch, they were pretty big, too," she said "But not as big as these." It was Patschke's first fishing "trip" since she arrived at the nursing home. She said it brought back memories of Sunday afternoon outings with her family, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home paid about $2,500 to bring the tank and between 300 and 400 pounds of hungry catfish to its residents. A nonprofit organization called Kidfish provided the set-up.
Brian Kitchen, a Kidfish event coordinator, said that one of the residents who has had several heart attacks told him that day-in and dayout, she didn't care what happened to her, but she just wanted to catch one fish. Leonard Goodwin, the rest home's resident gardener, stood at the quiet end of the pool swinging his bait to the spot where a jet of water hit the pool. "That's where all the oxygen is," he said. "They need oxygen." Goodwin, who used to fish for bass and bream in his stock tank in Mississippi, clearly enjoyed the challenge. His pond back home wasn't very big, he said, but it had plenty of "good, eatin' size fish." Catfish caught at the rest home Thursday and early Friday were released back into the pool to ensure every angler a chance at landing one.
Fish Fry Caps Event Friday afternoon, though, residents began keeping the fish they caught. "Between 5 and 6, I'll start filleting and I'll have the fish fry," Woody Richards, S.P.J.S.T. Rest Home director, said. Richards said family members were invited to the dinner. The two-day event was the second annual fishing tournament for rest home residents, and Richards said the event next year would include tee-shirts with photo prints of the biggest fish and the most fish. —SPJST-

Dear Reader, At our last meeting we talked about Youth Achievement Day (YAD). We had a lot of first place winners who will be going to State YAD. Our talent winners had a rehearsal. I have been to State YAD many times to watch, but this will be my first time I get to enter anything. Tori and Dustin Motley brought their old puzzles to the meeting. My brother, Blake, and I brought a lot of Campbell Soup labels, can tabs, and used ink cartridges. The youth leaders reminded us all to keep collecting for charity. She said we will collect these all year round. Besides these things we also collect used greeting cards, eye glasses, box tops for education, and cell phones. I hope everyone is having a fun summer so far. Jerrod Ryan, 14 8/6/03 —SPJST-

Let Us Study Czech! Lekce dvandvaciti— Lesson 22 Parts of speech— The Pronoun (Zajmeno): You remember that in your study of 2nglish, a pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. In Czech, there are 7 types of pronouns. 1. Personal: ji, ty, on, ona, oni, ony, my and vy. 2. Possessive: milj, tvuj, jeho, jejf, va§, etc. 3. Demonstrative: ten, ta, to, tento, tato, toto, onen, ona, ono. 4. Interrogative: kdo? co? kterjr? jakjr? ti? 5. Relative: ktett jent (who, which, that...), kdo, co. 6. Indefinite: Nekdo, nekterjr, nejakj, kdo-si, co-si; quantitative pronouns: kaldjr, v§echen; sam, sama, samo, tji, ta!, tei latter all expressing identity. 7. Negative: Nikdo, nic, 1. Personal pronouns: the longer forms— mne, mne, tebe, tobe— are used in emphasis and after prepositions. The shorter forms— mi, me, a, ti— are used when no stress is needed, and are used AFTER the stressed word. Psal mi. Zna§ me? On mi psal.
'Ty me znal? There is a special REFLEXIVE pronoun, SE for all 3 persons, singular and plural. EX: Ji se mjrji. On se mjrje. My se mjrjeme. (Let us note here an important spelling rule: When the masculine sex ONLY is involved, the pronoun is oni. When both sexes are involved, the pronoun is still oni. When only the female sex is involved, the pronoun is ONY. Modifying adjectives and verbs must agree with these endings. Ex.: Zen donesly; Chlapi donesli; vgichni (both sexes) donesli.) After prepositions, of course, the becomes ii— do ntho, k nem% s ni, s nimi, etc. 2. Possessive pronouns: correspond to the personal pronouns. For the 1st person singular, the possessive pronoun is milj (ma, me) and plural: nil. For the 2nd person singular, it is tvfij (tva, tve)— plural vá?; (vale). For the 3rd person singular, masculine and neuter, the possessive pronoun is jeho, which remains invariable; for the 3rd person singular feminine,.it is jejf; for the 2nd person plural, it is jejich, for all 3 genders. It also remains invariable. 3. Demonstrative pronouns: ten, ta, to, tento, tenhle. Colloquially, tamten or tamhle is used for "onen" (yonder, that one). The gender of course, determines which you use. 4. Interrogative pronouns: Kdo, koho, komu, o kom, kjrm; co, eeho, eemu, o tem, am? pro co, proe, nat, zat. Kterjr, jakjr— the distinction between these 2 is not always strictly observed. 5. Relative pronouns: Kdo— he who. Kdo nepracuje, at' neji. Co— that which...Dojdeme k tomu, o tem jsem chtel mluvit. Co is also used colloquially, as is: Od to doby, co...; Lidi, co tam byli... Jen2 is used mostly in literary style; in speech it is replaced by "kterjr"— instead of mul, jehol znam, we say mug, ktereho znam. 6. Indefinite pronouns: nekdo, nejakk, nekde, nekdy; the suffix si: kdo-si, co-si, kde-si, kdy-si, ti-si; also the suffix -koli: kdokoli, cokoli, jakk-koli, kterjrkoli; also the prefix lec: lec-kdo. Kaldjr may be used only with countable objects; v§echen for uncountable objects. In the plural, v§ichni does duty for both countables and uncountables. Ex.: kaidjr Nova, kaida Sena, kede devee. v§ichni lido, v§echny ieny, v§echny chleby, v§echna deveata. Sam means "alone": byl jsem tam sam. Samjr , sama, same, are used to express an idea of fullness or richness: stromy byly sam kvet; byli tam sami cizinci; na samem konci; u sameho okna. 7. Negative pronouns: if the prefix ni — is added to the personal pronouns, they are turned into negative pronouns ni-kdo, nic. From kterjr, jakjr, the negative pronoun MO is used before nouns: WO elovek, Lidni Pena, etc.
