Congratulations to Eva A. Heiman of Lodge 88, Houston for submitting the winning cover design concept for the new SPJST cookbook now in the works. The next 70s volleyball tournament will be played at the South Austin Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. on August 16, 2003. Come on down Lodge 155 members and support Doris and her fabulous, winning team! Some of our members had house guests during the summer. Alice and Ginny Prasatik hosted Ginny's 12 year old grandson, Levi Rogers, for the two weeks of July 3 through July 17. His mother, Cindy, brought him so the four of us could participate in the Fourth of July celebrations in our neighborhood that morning (despite the rain) and Zilker Park that night for the concert and fireworks display. It was quite a busy two weeks for Ginny taking her grandson to so many places that he had never been to before. The visit culminated in an all-day trip for them to Schlitterbahn Water Park in New Braunfels. With planned daily activities outside the house making certain that Levi did not get bored or turn into a couch potato, Ginny managed to keep up with him. Perhaps she even wore him out resulting in his sleeping "like a log" once his head hit the pillow at night while she stayed up to write in her journal! House guests of the Boriskis were Clarence's brother from College Station and nephew from California over the first weekend of August. The Ted Mareks are currently attending a family reunion in Caldwell. Ted recently presented the SPJST scholarship to his grandson, John Hall, II of Cuero, Texas (see Vestnik, July 30, 2003 issue; page nine for article). Congratulations to the proud grandparents. On July 18, Alice and Ginny Prasatik and Jay Dornoff who attended the reception for the Honorable Vladimir Spidla, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic on the University of Houston campus in Houston. met several of their Czech friends in Houston as well as those from Austin. They listened to speeches, watched the Czech dancers from West perform, partook of the buffet catered from Hillje, sang Czech songs, and had a great time! The next day, these three members went with friends to view the Vatican artifacts on exhibit at the Museum of Natural Science in Houston. The tour lasted four hours, but it was well worth it! On July 30, these three met each other in Shiner to attend a dinner/comedy play at the Gaslight Theater. The next night, these three attended the musical performance "Crazy for You" at the Zilker Hillside Theater in Austin. Do you get the feeling that these SPJST members just love going to plays? You bet your play act, they do. Do they ever stay at home? Perhaps once in a while, but then they're on the move again so they don't miss out of anything going on. The heat wave and "dog days" are upon us this August. Hope all our members and readers are "taking it easy", keeping cool indoors, and keeping out of hospitals. Take care of

yourselves and remember: "The friends we meet on the path of life make the trip worthwhile." Fraternally, Ginny Prasatik, Reporter —SPJST-

Lodge 180, Burleson reports on recent lodge happenings Howdy from Lodge 180, It's been a while. I want to start off by saying, "No, we didn't sell." We have, however, rented out the building every Saturday for the rest of the year and are currently booking for 2004! This past meeting was a very hard and emotional meeting. First, a special thanks to -Gladys Yates and Jerry Kucera for driving up from Waco and West. I would also like to welcome a new face to Lodge 180 — Mr. Robert Farmer. Mr. Farmer is a sales representative from Waco. He will be working in our area to try to increase members.

I would also like to thank those of you who showed up for our meeting. Sadly, Joe and Estelle Hurtik turned in their resignations. For the past 25 years Grandma and Grandpa have worked every Saturday night down at the lodge. They have seen me grow up and several others throughout the years. You both will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Hope to see both of you at occasional rentals — and no, you won't have to work! We ended the meeting with pizza, a cake, and some ice cream honoring Joe and Estelle. They were also presented with a card and gift certificate to Wal-Mart. There just isn't enough money or gifts in the world to show how much Grandpa and Grandma are appreciated. We'd Love to See You We have our monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the each month. Everyone is welcome to come. The more the merrier! We are also in need of more workers for our rent outs. If you don't want to work, at least stop by for a visit. We always enjoy seeing faces from the past. Fraternally yours, Johnna Lawyer —SPJST-

Lodge 183, Arlington reports on July meeting The monthly meeting was held July 11, 2003 at 7 p.m. This meeting was called to order by President Ann Pustejovsky. Dorothy Adamek reported that Raymond Mikeska had major surgery. Also, Pat Sill's daughter, Kelly, had major surgery. Please remember them in your prayers as well as other members who are ill. Daniel Roznovsky read the minutes of the previous meeting, and the financial report was given by Robert Sill. Ann congratulated Tommy Weeks a member of the youth club on winning first place in District Three cookie contest with his peanut butter cookies. He also won the title of Duke for District Three. He will compete at the State level on August 9. Tommy is the son of Tom and Kay Weeks. Kay is our youth leader, and she is doing an excellent job. During the meeting, we were pleased to welcome Richard Baker and Ray Moyer of the Shriners who gave a brief description of the hospitals the Shriners operate and support. At this time, Ann presented a check to them in the amount of $3,000 to be used to help the Shriners with their good work. Cecil Phillips made a motion that we donate $1500 to Immaculate Conception School in memory of Reverend Joseph Mazaika who passed away recently. Janie Rejcek seconded this motion and the motion passed. We recently donated $3,000 to the Arlington Police Association for them to help one of their officers with the medical expenses which accumulated after his medical coverage had been exhausted. These medical expenses were as a result of his wife having

Wednesday, August 20, 2003—VESTNIK/9 cancer. This officer is a good friend to us as well as being our most dependable security guard. Remember that our meetings are the second Monday of each month and family nights are the last Friday of every month. Cecil Phillips won the door prize of $25. Come to our meetings and maybe you might go home with $25. Fraternally, Martha Phillips —SPJST-

Lodge 9, Snook Youth Club member "knows the rules" Dear Vestnik Readers, I hope these words to live by help you: Rules of Chocolate

• If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly. • Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices and strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want. • If calories are an issue, store your chocolate on top of the fridge. Calories are afraid of heights, and they will jump out of the chocolate to protect themselves. • If you eat equal amounts of dark chocolate and white chocolate, that is a balanced diet. They actually counteract each other. • Chocolate has many preservatives. Preservatives make you look younger. Therefore, you need to eat more chocolate. • Put "eat chocolate" at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you will get one thing done. • A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Now, isn't that handy? • If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer. But if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you? • If not for chocolate, there would be no need for control top pantyhose. An entire garment industry would be devastated. You can't let that happen, can you? Fraternally, Kimberly Gaas 8/20/03 —SPJST-

Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club member survives year two of camp Dear Readers: Oh man! I survived my second year at District Three Camp at Val Verde in Mcgregor, Texas. And this year was

12/VESTNIK—Wednesday, August 20, 2003 extra special because I survived without my mom. Our theme this year at camp was the 50s and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of SPJST youth clubs. So our cabin's group name was "Grease Lightning. I played washers, canoed, rode horses (this year, my horse's name was Sundance), and of course, I went swimming. That was refreshing because it was hot this year. In crafts, I made a concrete stepping stone in the shape of a star and decorated it with mini tiles and shells before it dried. I also tie-dyed a white tee-shirt and learning the process was interesting. As always, I enjoyed throwing water balloons at the teens during our hayride. We had a helicopter land at camp this year. I took pictures of it landing and of its interior. It was really awesome. Until next year . David R. Lodge 84, Dallas Junior Youth Club member enjoys state competition Dear Readers, If you weren't at State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) competition last Saturday August 9, you missed a really fun day. Not only did I see alot of my friends, I got to meet some new ones, too! I stayed busy with the Special Category competition, dancing the Beseda and performing in our Junior Youth Club Group production. Oh yes, I also had a Pictorial Arts entry. Then there was the royalty competition that I watched from the audience. They all presented very good speeches. Did I mention the pizza for lunch? It was really good. Anyway, neither of my entries won; however, but my youth group got first place for their theatrical performance of "It's a Hard Knock Life." I had so much fun doing it, but I'm not going to miss the practices! We each won a trophy for our hard work. Our monthly meeting was scheduled for Monday evening, August 13. I will report on what we did in my next letter. Until then, everyone enjoy their last week off before school starts. Fraternally, Scott Cowan, 9 8/20/03 —SPJST-

84, Dallas Junior Youth Club member enjoys state competition Lodge

Dear Readers, Last Saturday, August 9, I went to Temple, Texas for State Youth Achievement Day (YAD) competition. I really like going because we get to spend the night before in a motel. There was a lot of activity going on

during the day. Youth Leader Jennifer Andreason made sure we registered to dance the Beseda and performance our group talent. She also made sure that we entered the Special Category competition. That was a lot of fun. We got to play with packing peanuts and make a display with them. We won first place in the Junior Group Talent category and are going to have a swimming party Friday, August 15 to celebrate. It's going to be a blast since I learned how to swim this summer. Now that State YAD is over, my youth group is going to start concentrating on our Beseda performance at the State Fair of Texas in October. We also have a lot of other things going on. We went to the Buckner Home on Tuesday, August 5 and delivered magazines for the residents to read and enjoy. I'm not sure what else we're doing, but I'm sure it will be fun. Until the next time, Submitted by, Elisabeth Cowan, 7 8/20/03 —SPJST-

186, Caldwell Youth Club member enjoys camping Lodge

On July 23 to 26, 2003, District One Youth Club went to camp called Camp Val Verde in McGregor, and I had a lot of fun. I was so happy my mom was my chaperone. My favorite was the scavenger hunt and the water balloon war.

Ebe Rotarbe ffestibat is a celebration of the revitalization of Czech heritage . . . a county that was basically a Czech settlement realized their precious identity was slipping away. New generations knew not the language, the music or the art of their ancestors. Not only do we grasp at the past, but we hurry to share the history . . . to bring into today's focus the beauty, talent, and delight of the Czech people. Come to the Kolache Festival and learn the wonderful Czech philosophy. See the technique of the stenciling, basket weaving, egg decorating, quilting, woodcraft, carving, sculpturing. Dance to the polka and sing the songs of the musician. Taste the true ethnic food and lend your soul to the fulfillment of the Czech cultural heritage.

Moravia School site near Granger to be designated historic landmark this Saturday, August 23 The Texas Historical Commission has recognized the Moravia School Site as a significant landmark in Texas history by naming it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL). The designation is the highest honor the state bestows to a historic structure or landmark for architectural integrity and historical associations. A dedication ceremony will be held to commemorate the event on Saturday, August 23, 2003 at 10 a.m. at the location of the former school on County Road 389, southeast of Granger. All Moravia School ExStudents, Families and Friends are cordially invited to attend this special event. Besides serving the families of Granger as a school, the building served as a meeting place for various organizations, including the Granger SPJST Lodge and the Granger Czech Moravian Brethren Church. Speakers for the event will include members of the Texas Historical Commission, Williamson County officials, Reverend James Hejl, Pastor of the Taylor Brethren Church, and former students, who will share in and witness this exciting historical event. A proposed marker topic must meet several criteria to qualify. A historic structure or landmark must be at least 50 years of age and should retain its architectural integrity from a period of a least 50 years ago. A structure should be in a good state of repair and an exemplary model of preservation. Naturally, historical significance must be demonstrated. The RTHL is awarded far less frequently than its counter marker type, the subject marker. Unlike subject

Westfest organizers extend invitation to annual Labor Day weekend celebration Looking for something to do this Labor Day Weekend, August 30 and 31? You won't find a better entertainment value for the entire family than Westfest 2003. Thousands attend annually! You, too, can enjoy a family blend of food, culture, dance, and just plain Czechoslovakian fun! In the Cultural Amphitheater, you will find a big selection of ethnic entertainment. In addition to Czechoslovakian dancing and costumes, you will find Norwegian, Mexican, German, Polish, Ukrainian, and others. Sokol Gymnastics is also presented in this area. There is plenty of seating so that you may rest your feet as you view the colorful and entertaining culture of the world. Our polka band lineup includes a Grammy Award winner, and a group from Wisconsin. Add to that our Texas Polka Bands, and you

have a variety of polkas and waltzes second to none. Old-fashioned feasting is the norm at Westfest! Start off with Czech sausage, or pork sausage served in several different ways. At Westfest, you'll find sausage-on-a-stick, sausage sandwiches, sausage dogs, even sausage boats. Garnish with mustard or a very popular sauerkraut and your taste buds will bloom. How about dessert? You have to have a few kolaches, a fruit-filled Czech pastry upon which Westfest has built quite a reputation. You'll find apricot, pineapple, cherry, prune, and other filings including cheese, poppy seed and even sausage. There is plenty of fun in store for the kids at Westfest. The children can enjoy clowns performing at different times as well as a puppet show. There are also several games for your youngsters to play. Dunking Sam, ring toss, and many others. There will also be a large section of carnival rides. Westfest fairgrounds are located one mile south of the town of West on Main Street. West is located just north of Waco off IH-35. For more information, see last week's Vestnik or call Westfest, (254) 826-5058
