Lodges, districts

encouraged to post important dates on 2004 calendar Please let the Vestnik office know if your lodge would like to list its important dates for 2004 on the official SPJST calendar. It costs you nothing and can be a great reminder for lodge members.

What qualifies as an "important date?" Think in terms of your big annual events such as picnics, member appreciation dinners, heritage day observances and regional events in which your lodge participates: On the district level, think in terms of district meetings and districtwide activities. Please get together with your lodge members at your next lodge meeting and determine which dates you want to include on next year's SPJST calendar. The deadline for submitting your lodge — and district — calendar information to the Vestnik office is September 30. You can fax your information to (254) 774-7447; or send via email to vanicek@spjst.com —SPJST-

Communicate Your Wishes Advance Directives The current round of continuing education classes for SPJST sales representatives focus on estate planning fundamentals. It's a good class and it covers a lot of ground. There is even a short section that addresses Living Wills and the complementary Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. Both are what are known as advance directives in that they enable a person to express how they want to be treated if they are seriously ill and unable to communicate. Before attending a recent class presented by State Field Manager Jim King. I didn't know the difference. Now I do. Before you continue, please know that what I am about to say is provided for informational purposes only and is not to be relied upon as legal advice. For advice that is specific to your particular circumstances, please talk to your physician, attorney or someone else who is knowledgeable on these topics.

bers may have conflicting ideas about prescribing medical treatment. That can make for a very difficult situation during an already trying time. Communicating your wishes in advance will help avoid potential confusion and ensure that your wishes are carried out. Give careful thought to who you designate as your Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care agent. Generally stated, the person you appoint should be at least 18 years old and someone you trust. Most important, it should be someone who feels comfortable with making medical decisions on your behalf in the event that you are unable to do so. Talk everything over with that person and let them know exactly what they will be expected to do. You don't have to designate an alternate agent; however, it is a good idea in the event that your primary agent is unable to make health are decisions for you. Because of the importance of the documents, two witnesses are required to verify that the Living Will and The Living Will By definition a Living Will is a Durable Power of Attorney for Health document outlining very specific Care are the true intentions of the wishes that apply while you are still maker. Lodge Letters Section Lodge 15, Buckholts reports on lodge, member activities The August meeting was our best one yet! All officers were present and we had a surprise visit from District Two Director Frank Klinkovsky who not only brought us up-to-date on Supreme Lodge affairs, he brought door prizes. The door mat is out for him at all times. I can't help but be partial to Frank and his wife, for he and Irma evoke a multitude of precious memories as far back as my childhood. I know and remember Frank's father who was a tireless and dedicated SPJST worker. All Frank has to do now is follow in his father's footsteps. Good Memories Irma's Rychlik grandparents were neighbors of my Mikulas grandparents. I was two years old when my grandmother Mikulas died, and it was Mrs. Rychlik who took care of me during the funeral. She was holding me in her arms at the Ocker Cemetery when I spied my mother standing by the graveside, but Mrs. Rychlik said I couldn't go to her then. Another time, I remember walking across the field to Rychliks where Mary and Olga entertained me. They had a brother, Lojzin, and their father made picture frames that he carved out of wood with a pocket knife. My grandson, Thomas Weatherford, has one with Uncle Thomas Mikulas's picture in it. All through the years, when on the occasions that I met two women who always greeted me, I knew it was the Rychlik girls, as we called them. All have gone to their eternal rest, and I feel blessed to have such poignant memories. I heard a preacher say once at a funeral in the Corinth Cemetery that no one is truly dead until they are forgotten. This is a case in point. In my last report, I forgot to mention that John Sefcik had another bout of bad luck healthwise. While on his way home after a doctor appointment, he felt something crawling under his shirt. He was not about to step on the highway to shake something out of his shirt so he just toughed it out. It was then he discovered that something was a blister bug that spread its calling card over his chest and halfway around his back. He called his doctor only to be told that he left town and all poor Seraphine, his wife, had to fight it with was a bottle of calamine lotion. By the time the blisters dried up, she was worn to a frazzle. Remember what Sir Francis Bacon said about wives being old men's nurses? I just wish we had access to those

No matter what the ailment, no matter how great the pain, all you have to do is pop a pill and next minute, you're dancing. Not just dancing, but jitterbugging, no less, or even doing the low dip. When we take the same remedies, we are lucky to put one foot in front of the other. School's Here: Summer's Over Except for the heat, summer is over when school starts. Like other grandparents, I had my grandkids to visit during the summer and now before starting school, all three grandsons came back to visit. John Paul Vogel who graduated from Texas A&M in May, stopped to spend the night on his way to San Antonio where he starts law school at St. Mary's, his father's alma mater. Stephen Vogel and two friends spent two days with me before leaving for Prague this coming weekend to study at Charles University. While in high school, he spent two summers at Cambridge University in England. While there, he visited Stonehenge twice. After the end of the fall semester, he will return to American University in Washington, D.C. Thomas Weatherford also came to spend several days before returning to Highland Park High School as a senior. All three boys are SPJST members of Lodge 130, Dallas while their mothers are members of Lodge 15,

month. Brian and Joan Vanicek have been married 16 years and Mark and Valerie Sebek have been married 25 years. Vice President/Fraternal Activities Coordinator David Nauert reported on the SPJST Golf Tournament to be held on Saturday, October 11. The hall and bar reports were given by Wilbert Mikeska. Barbara Macek gave the treasurer's report. From the hall report, we learned that the beer box is kaput and played out. A new one will be hunted. The bar was built around the box so there will probably be a few trying moments. Wilbert Mikeska and any helpers

that he can get will strip some of the floor. In her report, Youth Leader Joan Vanicek reported on the recent State Youth Achievement Day and complemented our young people for their fine showing at state. Several youngsters, including Michael Bazilius, J.R. Cooksey, Erin Hattemer, Amber Penn, Samuel Vanicek and Stephanie Vanicek all placed at the top or near the top in their respective events. The youth club also earned the distinction of winning first place in both the scrapbook and poster categories. Congratulations to all of these fine young people. Your diligence reflects positively on your lodge.

SPJST Library, Archives and Museum reports on recent activities, planning renovation Dear SPJST Members and Friends, The directors of our organization would like everyone to be aware of what is happening in our organization. The Library, Archives and Museum (LAM) is currently located in the basement of the SPJST Home Office. We are in need of more space and accommodations. Due to a monetary gift from Louis and Olita Hanus, we recently purchased a building to facilitate those needs. This building is directly across the street from the SPJST Home Office in Temple. At the present time, the building is rented and is used as an antique shop and beauty salon. The LAM is planning to renovate this building to accommodate the needs of the museum. We are working with an architect to provide us information to complete this project. We have basic drawings and the preliminary costs that will be necessary. Our goal is to occupy this location in five years. Your Support Appreciated All nonprofit organizations need financial sources to achieve their goals. The SPJST LAM hag four basic sources of financial support: grants, SPJST, lodges and individuals. We are asking members/individ-

uals to help with our five-year goal. A donation of any amount is being asked of members. This money will be used to establish exhibit spaces within the museum. A plaque with your name engraved, will indicate that due to your generosity, a particular exhibit space has been made possible. The LAM will be at a financial crossroad when we begin to renovate the interior of the building. We will critically need your generous giving to sustain the work that has begun. Any and all contributions are tax deductible. The LAM directors are committed to preserving our Czech and Texas heritage for future generations. Your contributions will help with this preservation. Please send your gift to: Treasurer Margaret Haisler Route Two, Box 58 Caldwell, Texas 77836 Sincerely, LAM Directors Jerry Milan, Margaret Haisler, Roxanne Bertrand, Howard Leshikar, Katherine Adamek, Jerry Prochazka, Nancy Weise and Glenn Kaminsky —SPJST-

County-Wide Sale and Car Show Our County-Wide Sale and Car Show will be on the first Saturday in November. The car show is being organized by Melanie Zavodny and David Nauert and it will be a hoot. Something strange to old coots like the writer. If you would like to reserve a spot for the County-Wide Sale, please contact Barbara Macek at 985-2376. We are justifiably proud of our member who is the State Youth Director Melanie Zavodny. She has tripled the number of youth clubs in the state with no additional staff. Sewing Circle reports on August meeting Ennis

The Ennis Sewing Circle met on August 14 with 26 members present and two guests, Irene Prachyl and Julius Podhrasky. The meeting was called to order by President Sadie Kubin with everyone reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. A moment of silence was held for Emil Slovacek, related to several members. The minutes were read by Vlasta Laznovsky and the treasurer's report given by Lillie Kosarek. Both were

approved as read. Dorothy Prachyl read a thank you note from Jerry Kopecek for all the kindness and sympathy shown to him on the loss of his mother, Mary Kopecek. There was a lovely memorial service for her which a group of us sewing circle sisters attended. Her son, Jerry, had a very nice tribute to his mother. He even spoke in Czech and told of the love his mother and father had and had showed to him. He told about when he went off to college his mother would write him every day and once she wrote she was baking him a peach pie and to look for it in the mail. Sure enough, the next day, he received a box with the peach pie and that it was still warm. He also spoke of his father's love. When he was drafted, I think, into the Korean War, his father tried to figure out a way he could go in his place, even though he had been wounded three times, captured and held prisoner for five years in World War II. It was a very nice and moving service. He invited everyone to Cafe Moravia to visit and reminisce. Back to Our Meeting Get well cards were signed to be mailed to Ann Mullins and Anne Zvolanek who haven't been feeling well and one for Doris Foit who had surgery. Hope all are feeling better by now. Eleanora Pelzel, our sunshine person, announced our August birthday sisters, Anna Zvolanek and Doris Foit who were not present and to Dorothy Kudrna and Frances Vinkler to whom we all sang, "Happy Birthday." Fort Worth Czech Class Pictured above are members of the Forth Worth Czech class that had been meeting every Thursday evening since May at the ThomasPlace Community Center in Fort Worth. The class ended on August 7. "I think everyone had a good time and we really benefit ed from the considerable efforts of Joe Janecka who taught and led class," says class organizer Tom Regmund. Anyone who is interested in continuing or joining the class is asked to contact Brother Regmund evenings at (817) 441-7230. Pictured, from left, are Del Smajstrla, Libbie Vrla, Ed Kocurek, Brian Cepak, Tom Regmund, Anika Milberger, Riley Milberger, Agnes Reznicek, Lillie Kosarek, Joe Janecka, Alice Janecka, Allen Milberger and Mary Schneider. Not pictured is Angie Ingram. sauerkraut and dumplings, klobases, kolaches, and strudel. Everyone is encouraged to bring any items they may have from the Czech Republic to exhibit. The door prize was brought by Rose Ann Spann with Betty Landsfeld being the lucky winner. Everyone enjoyed the little gift exchange. We just love getting presents! This was also the month for bringing food items for the St. Thomas Food Bank, and Alice reported 155 items were brought plus $40 for which she has purchased 40 jars of jelly. President Alice reminded Lydia Alholm, Roy Alholm, Frances Matthews, and Mary Schneider that they are scheduled to be hostesses in September. Our August hostesses-Elsie Anders, Sharron Connelly, Barbara Orand, and Betty Landsfeld-did a superb job. Following' grace led by Lydia Alholm, a great luncheon was enjoyed then games were played. A good time was had by all.

News of Members Lucille Kret is flying to Las Vegas with her son, Dr. Tim Kret and his wife, where Tim will attend a medical conference. While there, they will be joined by Lucille's daughter, Sharon, and her husband from California. I am sure there will be lots of visiting and lots of "playing," ·and Lucille is always a winner. Rosie Steinman and Carrie Milan along with Mary and Appa Hargiss recently attended the SPJST State Youth Achievement Day in Temple. Rosie's granddaughter, Appa, won second place in her age group for her food entry, "Forgotten Cookies." Congratulations, Appa, I still want to sample! Mary Ann and Joe Kozel enjoyed a bus trip to Biloxi, Mississippi which is the third oldest city in the United States. Mary Ann said they toured the historic part of the city, and she didn't know that Biloxi is a peninsular. One day, they went out on a shrimp boat and enjoyed watching, not shrimping. They stayed at the Beaurivage Hotel and enjoyed the casino. When asked if she was a winner. she replied, "No, I was a loser,"

Mary Ann and Joe celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at a dinner party hosted by their children on August 10. All of Mary Ann and Joe's children and grandchildren were there plus other family and friends. Irene Green and her children hosted a German style 80th birthday party for Harold Green on August 9 at the Sokol. It was complete with German decorations, a beer garden, and the family wearing German costumes. Of course, there was lots of German beer, German food.: and music. Everyone had a great time. Congratulations, Harold, on being 80 years young. Lydia and Roy Alholm will celebrate their 57th wedding anniversary on August 31. Congratulations to both of you! Alice Barnes enjoyed the few days visit of her niece, Gail Rice of Lufkin, Texas along with Gail's daughter, Teri Kubosh, and her three children from Aledo, Texas. Then she had her sister and husband, Eva Mae and Dave Cagley from Kingsland, Texas and friend, Roy Cagley from Biloxi, Mississippi, over for a few days. I bet Alice got caught up on all the family news.

Czech Class Complete We have completed our 12-week Czech class sessions and must admit, I have missed going to class. It was most enjoyable, and I believe I can read somewhat better. I always try reading the section in the vestnik. Of course, learning more new words does help. Thanks, Tom Regmund for organizing the class and great big thanks to Joe Janecka for dong such a splendid job in teaching. At our last session, we enjoyed svacina hosted by Agnes Reznicek which consisted of poppyseed, apple, and peach kolaches.

Next Meeting September 3 The next meeting is on September 3. Don't forget your Czech items for display and luncheon dish. If you don't know how to make a Czech dish, that's just fine-bring whatever! See you then. Libbie Vrla. Reporter

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club reports on State YAD, camp and fun summer trip Dear Readers, Summer has been very busy for me and the members of Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club. July was especially busy with Youth Achievement Day (YAD) practices, our District One YAD, Camp and our Schlitterbahn trip all in the month of July. At District One YAD, I participated in the Senior Group Talent Skit, "In the Jailhouse Now Rock." I lip synced the song in the "In the Jailhouse Now" and danced with the rest of the group in "Jailhouse Rock." It was a lot of fun. We won first place at District. I also entered five crafts. I won first in Hobby Kits with a K'Nex crane and first with a Science and Education project called "Tanning Hides." I got second place in Photography with a picture of the Grimes County Courthouse and second in Handicraft with a Tin Can Farmer Fountain. I also entered Foods. I ran for king for the first time. I was a little nervous but I'll do better next year. Camp was a blast. I was a first year LIT and got to help with the activities after supper. At the 50s party, I helped make Coke floats with the campers. On the last night, I let the six to seven year olds cover me with shaving creme then throw water balloons at me. It was fun. I can't wait to be an LIT again next year. The food at camp was awesome. Aunt Carol, Aunt Donna, Randy and Ms. Shelly did a great job cooking. Everything was so good especially the barbecue. We went to Schlitterbahn on Thursday, July 31. We took two charter buses, and they were both full. The lines were long but we all had a good time. My crazy cousin, Lacy, rode the new body swing. She said it was fun, but it looked scary to me. Our bus driver, "Woody," told my mom he wanted a shirt like she had on (this year's red tee-shirt), so she gave gayer hers to him. He was a little surprised, but she still had her swimsuit on under her shirt. The ride home was

a lot of fun, too. School is about to start, and I have started band practice twice a day. I will be a freshman at Caldwell High School. SPJST keeps me really busy during the summer, but it's all fun stuff to do. Fraternally, Kyle Skrabanek President

Lodge 17, New Tabor Youth Club members participate in church pre-Fourth festivites Dear Readers: Our church, Elizabeth Lutheran, hosted a pre-Fourth of July celebration and Fireworks Display on July 3. There was polka and country and western music, a train ride, bounce and slice, moonwalk, and all sorts of games for kids of all ages. The men from our church grilled burgers, hot dogs, and sausage and the ladies made homemade ice cream. We served tea and soda water. The best part was at the end of the evening when the firework show started. I heard there were over 1,000 people who came to this event. We are hoping for even more people and fun next year. Lodge 25, Ennis Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club member Youth Club members exel at district YAD reports on State YAD competition Dear Readers, Dear Readers, I enjoyed the State Youth Achievement Day competition. I entered in Handicraft, Science and Education, Talent, and Special Category. I brought home a first place trophy for my educational project. My entry was "Driving Distractions." For the project, I used a computer program with a steering wheel, gas and brake pedals. I tested several adults on how they drive. Then I tested them while eating, drinking, and talking on cell phones. I charted, and averaged their scores and found that everyone of them drove much worse while being distracted. I learned a lot from the project and hope others did, too. I also brought home a second place trophy for talent. My entry title was "See Me,It was a dramatic poem about a gentleman in a nursing home who was pleading with his nurses to take a closer look at him as he went on to reminisce about his life. Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club reports on August meeting Dear Readers, Lodge 39, Bryan held its secondSunday-of-the-month meeting on August 10, 2003. We had a small turn-out due to everyone was somewhere else. That was okay. We still had a great lunch, held our youth club meeting, cleaned up, and went home. We want to invite all of Lodge 39, Bryan members to our meeting. We have changed the meeting to the seco-nd Sunday due to them always falling on the same day as district functions. Come see us! Sincerely, Dylan Roesler 9/3/03 -SPJST—

Lodge 39, Bryan Youth Club held its meeting during the District One Youth Achievement Day on July 20, 2003. We watched the talented youth compete and listened as the king and queen contestants gave their speeches. Once royalty was completed, it was time to announce the winners of the day. Out of our lodge, Peggy Gutierrez won second in needlework; Dylan Roesler won second in pictorial arts; and Lynde Roesler won in several events. I received first in Handicraft with a Texas flag. Finally, after a long competitive day, it was time to go home, and we were so excited! Brande Roesler, 16 9/3/03 —SPJST-

Lodge 87, Temple Youth Club member hails District Two Schlitterbahn trip Dear District Two Members, If you didn't go on the District Two trip to Schlitterbahn, boy., did you miss out! I think I can speak for everyone who went and say it was a blast! The weather was perfect except for about 30 minutes when there was thunder, but that was no biggie. Many people left, and because of that, it made the lines shorter. Yippee! I know I wasn't complaining after people left. I got to ride more rides! Also, we got really close — especially on the way home. The Greger's car had broken down earlier that morning, and they had to hitch a ride to Schlitterbahn. We were so glad when they got there, but the challenge was getting them back home. This is where we got really close. We stuffed eight people in District Youth Counselor Patsy Koslovsky's vehicle. Let's just say we all got a little closer that day, but hey, it wasn't so bad. Dawn Capps 9/3/03 —SPJST—
